Try the hot chocolate. It's made with melted chocolate ganache so it's very rich and creamy. Then it's topped with chocolate whipped cream. It's the type of treat that makes you really love life.

You also have to try their desserts. My two favorites are the mango which is white sponge cake filled with mango mousse and fresh mango, and the marjolaine which has layers of hazelnut meringue, vanilla buttercream and bittersweet chocolate.

In addition their sandwiches and salads are decent but a little overpriced. If you can get there early for lunch they offer a small sandwich of the day for only $3.50. It's a great deal and then you'll have enough money to splurge on a hot chocolate or fancy dessert.

It is really hard to go wrong here, and I keep coming back when I feel like something just a little different for lunch.  The sandwiches are delightful - I am eating the St. Andres: brie, pear, turkey (added at my request) with a walnut spread.  They're generous with their meat, the veggies are fresh, and the spreads they use are flavorful.

I've gotten their sweats a few times: above average but not amazing.  Quiche is good, and served with small salad.  The staff has been friendly and helpful suggesting things to try.

Have always been impressed with the pastries and cakes I get out of Madeleine. It can be a bit pricier than it should be--does $50+ for a 10" cake seem expensive to you? It does a little bit to me.

But the people are very nice and they turn stuff around from scratch relatively quickly.

Cute, small cafe with fancy, delectable desserts.
(They serve lunch, though I have yet to try it.)

    ORDER:
"MARJOLAINE - layers of hazelnut meringue, vanilla buttercream and bittersweet chocolate" (Menu)
    $5.50, if I recall correctly

This rectangular, individual-serving-sized cake was tasty and true to the French tradition of delicious dessert that are not overly sugary (but probably fattening). The puff pastry or wafer layers paired nicely with the meringue and chocolate top layer. There was a good amount of cream to bind it all together. It's served chilled, so have fun tasting the hard chocolate melting in your mouth. (That's what she said! =P)

AMBIENCE: Cute, simple yet chic space. There isn't much indoor seating, but they do have some outdoor seating as well.

    SERVICE: Fine.

VISIT DETAILS: Late afternoon "tea time" with a friend. Too bad they close relatively early at 5:30 pm.

I came at 1pm and thought I avoided the lunch rush, guess I was wrong.

I was placing an order for myself and a colleague - so after I ordered our chicken sandwiches she thought I was done and kept trying to ring up my order.  When I told the cashier I had more to add to it she seemed a little impatient.

    - Sandwiches are about 6 inches on a french roll, it was OK.
    - They have super cute pastry items!
    - If you order a drink they serve it in another part of the cafe, then you have to walk back to the front counter to pick up the rest of your order.  I think this process could use some improvement because it didn't slow smoothly esp when it was crowded.
    - The chocolate s'more brownie was heaven in my mouth! It looks good, but tasted even BETTER!  No calories wasted there ;) haha.

Overall? This is a really cute girly place filled with lots of cute dessert items - if I lived closer I'd be in trouble because I'd want to try everything!

Walked in looking for lunch on a cold, rainy day.

Grilled cheese sandwich and tomato bisque hit the spot!  Yum!  The grilled cheese was done on a panini press, so the edges were nice and crispy in contrast to the melting cheese.  I dunked the grilled cheese sandwich into the sweet creamy tomato bisque . . . magic!!

It looks like they have all sorts of yummy sandwiches, quiches, and pastries that I look forward to trying in the future!

We ordered our wedding cake from Cafe Madeleine and I am so glad that we did.

First...amazing tasting.  When I made the appointment I let them know all of the types of flavors I liked and when we arrived we had six little mini cakes to try.  They were all fantastic.  I am a big fan of butter cream and they don't disappoint.  I was able to email them a picture of the cake that I liked and they were able to take a 3 tier cake design and make it into a beautiful 2 tier cake for our small wedding.

Second...beautiful, perfect cake.  My guests loved the look (and the taste) of the cake.  I was glad that I let them talk me into fondant covering the butter cream because it made the cake look perfect (and I could just pull of the fondant from my piece)

The staff was so nice and I would order from them again without hesitation.  My only complaint was that there was a $75 delivery fee and my reception location was less than 2 blocks away...so I just delivered it myself.  I thought their per piece price however was very reasonable.

Is this too-cute-for-school patisserie cafe run by American Girl? I think I am so out of the demographic for this place that I felt like Carrie White at the prom just after the bucket of pig's blood was doused on her. The staff and clientele are decidedly distaff - that's an old word meaning female, my children. Did I also mention how young everyone is in here? You would have thought I would have left, or I would have been taken out in a walker. But no, I stood there proud to be a curmudgeon looking for something sweet after a fiery chicken curry at nearby Tan's Cafe (in their last day of operation).

I found it, a $3.50 Lemon Tart with a dollop of whipped cream and three strategically placed blueberries on top. Isn't it pretty? (see photo) Yes, I took it and a cup of coffee to the tall red naugahyde seating area and ate it amid a giggling gaggle of girls who were all texting between nibbles of their own petite pastries. But there was one girl who was all alone at a cafe table. She had stringy hair and lumpy clothes, wore a pair of cat's-eyes glasses held together by tape, and no one would text her. She was eating the $7.95 Pulled Pork Sandwich and letting the barbecue sauce dribble from the corners of her mouth. Finally, someone I could relate to.

    PASTRY - 3 stars...awfully sweet stuff...stay away, Paula Deen.
AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...oddly spacious and quite girly
SERVICE - 2.5 stars...did you say something, hun?
TOTAL - 3 stars...if you need something sweet and don't mind eatin' with the girls

NOTE: This review is strictly in regards to their hot chocolate.

I stopped in to this location with a coworker today to sample their hot chocolate. I ordered a small with nonfat milk (no whip) and my coworker got the same with regular milk and light whip. Small hot chocolate = $3. Yikes! That's a wee bit pricey for my taste, but I figured it was probably a cost-for-quality item.

Well... no, it wasn't. The chocolate they used tasted alright, albeit a little grainy. That couldn't save it from being watered down and buttery. SO BUTTERY. Both my coworker and I took the lids off and looked at our drinks halfway through, troubled by the sight of thick, oily pools floating atop the cocoa. Even after fishing most of the pools out with a spoon, the buttery, fatty flavor was overwhelming. We couldn't finish them.

Save yourself some money if you're craving a hot chocolate and go elsewhere. Even Starbucks cocoa is much more preferable IMO.

Only had one thing here so far but it was good...Cobb Salad.  Nice size, tasty ingredients, made to order, can get a nice dessert if you want to indulge your sweet tooth.  A little competition for La Baulange de Market if you're in the mood for frenchy style food.  Came here cuz I was tired of Lee's, Specialties, SF Soup, and Subway.

Ha!~ I echo Steve's assessment of Madeleine's being full of hot chicks. Does he really need to question why? Adorable, delicious, fruity & chocolately desserts, big ol salads and tasty, gigantic sandwiches? Plus cute gay boys with perfect hair working the counter? And a female manager? It's like home! You're damn right it's full of hot chicks.

Lucky for us, there are a few gorgeous men in here too. Standing in line to buy a tart, a silver fox I natch assumed was gay sidled into place behind me. We chatted, he advised, perhaps he thought I was flirting -  because he mentioned his wife. I was troubled my excellent gaydar rating was blown and then rallied because let's face it, he was pretty and nice and straight. Yes, Virginia, they do exist :)

The tart was delish. The staff is friendly. And the customers are beautiful, inside and out.

YUM!  Literally just finished eating their Portabella mushrooms sandwich.  It is topped off with a thin slice of smoked fontina cheese, some cruunchy marinated onions, and chipotle-tomato spread on a whole wheat roll.  Cost me a little less than $9 for this filling sandwich!  In fact, I was only able to finish half of it before feeling super stuffed.  Saving the second half for a snack.

This place is a cute, brightly lit cafe with a few small tables  for dine-in customers.  The majority of the people get their food to go.  I liked that they were quick to give me my sandwich.  It wasn't piping hot as I would have liked it, but since it's summertime, I guess I don't need a super hot sandwich.

I was eyeing the desserts on display and had my heart set on some Matcha Tirsamisu, but decided against it.  No need for extra calories today...will come back for you next time!  MUAHAHAHH!

Desserts looked incredible, but I was trying to be healthy and ordered the mixed greens salad, which was okay. The portabella mushroom was good, except paired with the balsamic vinaigrette, it was almost too much balsamic. The chicken was fine, nothing special / a bit dry.

I think this could have been better, but all in all just not the best combination. Probably would only go back for the dessert!

I was meeting up with an acquaintance visiting from San Diego and we decided to meet up in SOMA to catch up.  She was in town for a big concert and it was a good opportunity to try a new, highly rated place downtown.

I ordered the ham sandwich, which was nearly $10.  It was served on a small ciabatta roll and no sides.  It was pretty expensive for what it was, but it tasted pretty good.  Still, for a sandwich with only a stack of ham and 2 slices of apple, I felt a little bit cheated.

Overall the experience was good, but it definitely isn't a place to get a meal.  They have some delicious-looking pastries in the window which I'll have to try next time, but I don't think I'll be back for the expensive sandwiches.  There's some pet-friendly people-watching tables out front but it's usually too cold and windy on New Montgomery St to enjoy them.

I'm going to upgrade this place by one star because I like their cookies. They are huge and cheaper than other nearby places. They are also really good! I've tried all flavors: oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter, white choco with coconut, chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips, smores.... My favs are the regular choco chip and the white choco. I get cookies from here DAILY.

I also want to add that their chopped salad is DELICIOUS. SO MUCH BLUE CHEESE, and delicious yummy candied walnuts. ALSO, i love the dill in the salad.

A bit pricey but really worth it for they use top quality ingredients!

The mixed organic green salad is delicious, healthy, and full of great flavors/textures. (As is all their salads) Add chicken for $2! It's about a little over $8 for their salads. Prices have went up a bit over the years but reasonable considering economy changes.

Quiches & Pastas are really yummy as well. I had the prosciutto & mushroom quiche and it comes with some regular mixed greens.

I really enjoy their coffee, pastries, salads, and quiches. I have yet to try their sandwiches.

I'm in love with their butterscotch pudding. I really am. I just...I love it. I do.

I also like the $3.50 sandwich of the day since they're a pricey cafe. For me, going here really is treating myself to something special. Everything I've had is tasty. I'll say that some of the staff could be a bit more friendly, but I go here for the food, not friends. I'm thankful it's so close to my work, but it'll burn a hole in my wallet if I go everyday. Self control is so hard when butterscotch pudding is on the line.

I absolutely love this place.  I am aware that stalking isn't legal in this state, but there are just so many reasons to celebrate and I need cake - often.

So far, I've had the pleasure of trying three of their full-sized cakes:  the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle (chocolate sponge cake with raspberry-infused chocolate truffle filling; $38/8" cake), the traditional Red Velvet cake (cream cheese frosting; $35/8"), and some delightful confection with strawberry (gelee, I think) and basil, whose name slipped my mind.

Ohmygoodness.  All of these cakes are very different, but have some very essential things in common - they are moist, decadent, rich, flavorful cakes without being overbearingly sweet.  I have a subtle sweet-tooth, and I dislike intense sugary icing on my cake.  Even the Red Velvet, which can be so terribly sweet it makes my teeth ache, was delicate and delicious.

While I am truly in love with their baked goods (heart you lemon tart), I have also sampled some of their lunch fare (mixed greens salad & the express sammie), and I have ultimately enjoyed every item I have purchased here.

With Starbucks and Peet's duking it out on every major intersection it seems, it's a miracle little places like this one exists.

I'm glad Cafe Madeleine does. The other morning I was running a few minutes too late to get breakfast at home. I'm still learning this area, but recalled seeing three different coffeeshops I hadn't tried before on the same block of New Montgomery street. I walked that way, and Cafe Madeleine won me over with its cute little logo and neat appearance as viewed from outside the open doors.

I walked in, and was greeted with a smile. I ordered my usual decaf along with an enticing raspberry almond croissant. My coffee was fresh, and had a crisp, strong flavor. The croissant was as amazing to taste as it looked -- a just right combination of moist but crisp; a balance of salt and sweet; and a naughty treat that was just sensible enough to be classified as breakfast rather than dessert.

And speaking of dessert, I would love to come back and sample one of their devilish tempting cupcakes.

The Verdict: Cute, cozy, and tasteful for the win!

The quiches are pretty good, and the cookies fairly nice, but...

The CUPCAKES... well, let's just say that I like cupcakes but don't love them, because even the best are not THAT incredible (even Magnolia in NYC or Kara's here). I mean, they're nice and all, but nothing to swoon over.

Madeleine's salted caramel cupcake was the BEST cupcake I've ever had. The cake was flavorful, but the treats were the smooth and delicious frosting (with a sprinkle of pink salt) and the salted caramel filling (not frosting; actually salted caramel). Left a great taste in my mouth, unlike most which either leave a taste of chemicals or sugar.

Am an absolute fan of this place.

** The seating arrangement space is generous, there are 4-5 tables inside and 2-3 tables outside, with tons of privacy
** The almond biscotti had a touch of anise seed I believe. which is something starbucks doesn't have
** The portions for coffee and lattes are generous

This place is now my new favorite coffee spot.

You can't ever go wrong with tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich.  Something so simple, but yet so mouth watering.

The tomato soup is pretty amazing.  It's slightly chunky and not fully pureed like say a Campbell's Tomato soup.  Great texture to the soup.  By itself, I'd give the soup 5 stars.

The grilled cheese is ok.  I wished they used a sharper tasting cheese in the sandwich.  I believe the sandwich is cooked on a panini press machine.  It doesn't give the bread the same texture as a pan fried grilled cheese like they serve at Sonic.  Still though, when paired with the Tomato Soup, yummmmmm.

I'm also a fan of the premade baguette sandwiches and soup deals.  Super quick in and out on those busy days.

On another aspect, the cakes here are really good.  I'm usually not much of a fan of cakes, but the cakes are incredible.  Our office usually gets their birthday cakes from Madeleine.  The cakes here aren't too sweet and aren't masked by icing.  All the fruit tart/cakes here are amazing.  All moist and fluffy topped with tons of fruit!

Oh yeah, another plus, there's a super cute girl that works here also.  Secret crush.

I've been here a few times when I rehearsed for shows at 111 Minna Gallery. This time was no different. I needed to get some quick snacks and waters for the girls.

Cafe Madeleine is a beautiful shop, nicely decor and well-kept. The coffee here is decent always. Although the service is always hit or miss for me. Trust me, I always come in with a good attitude! This time, the girl that helped me ruins it.

After a lemon cake, 4 biscotti, 5 bottles of drinks, I asked if I can get some disposable cups for to-go, since I only saw the ones next to the register. The girl looked at me as I was from another planet, (OK so I'm Asian with short hair!) Then she stepped to the back next to the coffee machine, to point out at the water paper cup & asked me "this one?" I replied "yes." She gave me 2 cups, really, but I bought 5 bottle of drinks!

She didn't greeted me. Then the cashier, another gal rang me up, didn't say thank you & asked, "you need a bag?" Yeah, I do, all the stuff I bought you think I'm just gonna hold it against my body & walk out!

Come on ladies, I know it's raining hard outside & you don't want to work, but this is what you do for living? Please smile at least, I didn't beg for food, I paid for it fair & square!

Being a few doors from my office it was great to find a place that had a yummy salad.

They have express sandwiches that changes on the daily for 3 bucks too which is neat.

I have had them cater to a few of my meetings and they have a 10% delivery fee which is convenient that they actually deliver.

Mostly salad, cold/hot sandwich place, with some soups.

They have the most beautiful looking pastries tho! The cakes, fruit tarts, yum. So dangerous. I'll try one one of these days.

Oh so I got a Chopped salad with candied walnuts, apples, blue cheese and mustard-dill vinaigrette $8.25 added chicken for another 2 bucks. I don't really like bleu cheese and they pile it on top so I'll ask to not have it next time.

They have a few other salad options too.

The salad was HUGE. I didn't even finish it.

I would love to come back and try something else.

Yummy and really smooth flavored coffee!

For every birthday we have in the office, we buy 2 cakes to celebrate.
I usually fetch my cakes here or Tart. If you order in advance you can pick your flavors, otherwise it's whatever they have out front.

Here are the ones I've tried so far:
Almond Fruit Tart: Pretty! The tart is a bit on the firm side, but pretty good!
Caramelia: Totally tasted like it had alcohol in it. SUPER soft.
Red Velvet: I LOVE red velvet, but not from Madeleine. It was way too dry :(
Chocolatine: Definitely borderline of sweet and too sweet. It definitely satisfied my chocolate cravings!
Triple Chocolate: Tastes like the name...

I had this little dessert that had black currant in it's ingredients... don't remember the name but it was redish pink and really pretty. DO NOT BUY! Wayyyy sourrrr!!

    Must try more cakes!

This is so close to my office yet I only tried it recently because the high prices put me off before. I tried one of their sandwiches and was very disappointed. It was a black forest ham sandwich with fennel chutney, or something similar. Sounds delicious, right?

Well, it's hard to imagine how they got a normal sandwich so wrong. It's as though they don't think about what it will taste like but more about what looks good on the menu board. It was two slabs of terribly dry bread, a mountain of sliced ham, a bit of cheese falling out and this lumpy, dry stuff that was supposed to be the rich moist chutney it would've needed to make it edible. I had to chuck half of it away because I was fed up of eating plain ham and dry bread.

I've also had a Cobb salad from there (fine, bleu cheese was gross though, but I guess this is what passes for blue cheese in the USA :) ) and a couple of the cake dessert things. These looked so exciting but were just airy nothingy sponge with some tasty cream and a bit of fruit - not worth $11 for two.

I'd like to try the quiche and some different desserts but so far I'm  genuinely amazed at how crappy their sandwiches are! I would far, far prefer one of the moist sandwich rolls from Lee's in future (for half the price).

    Service is great, mind.

I got a slice of triple chocolate cake.  It is by far the best cake I've ever had.  Perfect taste.  Perfect flavor combination.  Perfect sweetness level.  Perfect texture.  Perfect size.  At about $5, it's not a place I'll visit every week, but it has the best cake in town.

If this place wasn't so pricey, it would get 5 stars from me. But then again, you are paying for an amazing cake.

I picked up a birthday cake from here for my sister. It was amazingly delicious. But come early! The best is if you reserve your cake ahead of time, or by the time you come in, all the really great ones will be gone. You can even come in in the morning, pick your cake out, and then leave it there for the day. Just make sure you claim it! A cake that will feed 7ish people will be about $35.

Their croissants are also fantastic. If ever I need a croissant fix, this is where I come.

The staff and friendly and efficient, which is always a plus.

Being trapped at the Moscone Center for 3 days straight is bad enough, let alone having only pubs and fast food chains within walking distance. Luckily, I Yelped my way to Cafe Madeline where I found just the quick gourmet lunch I was looking for. The line moved fast and most of the items are freshly packaged up and ready to go. They are definitely prepared for the lunch-rush crowd. Seating is limited, but tables turn over fast enough to get lucky.

I have been back numerous times for their luscious chicken/ asparagus/ pesto salad - a generous to-go portion for about $5. The huge green & purple asparagus heads look like something out of Martha Stewart's dream garden...a truly awe-inspiring lunch! The tomato soup with fresh baguette is another winner. Ironically, I still haven't tried their madeleines...another reason to return.

While up in San Francisco for business, we had a meeting over coffee at Cafe Madeleine. I decided to grab a cafe au lait for an afternoon pick-me-up.

I think the success of one's cafe au lait hinges on the underlying drip coffee. If you don't have a good drip coffee foundation, a cafe au lait can be a terrible thing. Sadly, this is what went wrong here at Cafe Madeleine. They use Mr. Espresso, I think, which I've never been a big fan of. The coffee just wasn't all that great--it was little watery, honestly--and the steamed milk couldn't make up for this floundering foundation.

The baked goods at Cafe Madeleine looked tasty, but I didn't get a chance to sample any.

The atmosphere inside felt very modern, yet also retro. But how I loathe the banquette seating! Seriously, it was one of the most uncomfortable banquettes I've ever put my tushie on! It was angled and made of red faux leather, so I kept feeling like I was sliding off. And the angle made it awfully difficult to drink my coffee, and I came very close to spilling it a couple of times. Take my advice and stick with tables if you can.

Had a tuna sandwich. It was acceptable. Too much cheese, but warmed through well.

    Might be better for breakfast.

Cafe Madeleine is such an adorable little place to grab a quick lunch. I've had several of their salads and sandwiches and I've never been disappointed! I usually get the grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup and sit outside with a good book. The cafe just has a very pleasant, quaint atmosphere. I haven't tried any of their desserts, but they always look so amazing! I'm always tempted but my willpower always wins, thankfully. I can see that people may think that the food is slightly pricy, but I've always felt full after everything I've eaten. All in all, I shall definitely continue to return!

Man cannot live on chocolate alone, but a young lady who works here should definitely start---Attitude problem! My friend wanted her prosciutto tortellini heated up and she made a fuss about it. Meanwhile, I decide to order the Prosciutto, Brigante cheese, greens, tomatoes and pesto spread on ciabbata $7.95. Sat in the little table outside. It took about 4-5min, pretty good, but this place definitely has the french style, très petit! Come here for the dessert or a quick on-the-go light lunch.

Ehh, I've had better! A couple times I've purchased pastries from here they all tasted the same. Meaning they were all sitting in the same fridge so they took on the flavors of all the pastries next to it! For example a triple chocolate mousse cake shouldn't taste like raspberries at the surface. Sometimes they don't seem the freshest, you'll know when it's stale on the outside but moist on the inside!

The whole cakes are a different story, which is why the place received an additional star. Order a whole cake if you want a yummy, fresh and moist cake! The Opera cake and Marjolaine are pretty good... as whole cakes, not the pre-cut, ready to serve kind. You may end up tasting traces of bananas, lemon or raspberries!

Ready for this? BEST CAKES EVER. I have tried at least 8 different cakes over the last year or so, as my office gets one every time there's a birthday. They are light, delicate, but insanely rich at the same time. My favorite is the chocolate raspberry truffle, but really... every cake here is amazing. They're expensive, but 100% worth the money. The next time I have a celebration at home, I will gladly come into SF to get a cake from here.

The lunch items here are good. Very hit or miss for me. I expected more from the beet salad, while the chopped salad is perfect. The prepared pasta salads, beet salads, quiches, etc. behind the glass don't look too appetizing, so I've never tried them. I will now openly admit that at one point I was addicted to the warm mozzarella and tomato sandwich.

I came here with my friends and I ordered a cookie. We all wanted to order an individual cake or dessert displayed when you walk in, but it seems so over priced. The workers really looked like they were rushed, they might have been doing an order or delivery or so, but no one was really at the store. My rating for Cafe Madeleine is 3 stars because first off, I came here thinking my money would be well spent, but the individual cake is over priced. Secondly, the cookie I got was pretty good, it just seemed like an average homemade cookie. The third thing is that the place looks very clean and welcoming, but the workers should greet the customers more even though they are running around. I believe the vibe the workers set should be calm in the front room.

I was fading at 2:30 in the afternoon... boss asked if I wanted to get coffee or yogurt? I suggested cake since I craving cake...

We walked (along with the incoming Giants fan on their way to the ballpark) and found ourselves here... fortunately they still had some goodies left and I had to calm myself down... to figure out what to get...

    I opted to get:
» FAVORITE - chocolate sponge cake lightly soaked with rum, with fudge filling

    OMG!

It was chocolate heaven! It wasn't sweet at all... but it was uber chocolate-y! Every bite was filled with soft, just baked cake with rum and fudge... I was in heaven.

What an awesome pick me upper... satisfied all the chocolate craving this gal needed!

PS: prices are steep but it's worth it for that craving!
