Great way to pepper your 70-80 hr work weeks...it is always a little treat vacation. This place had me at first check-in offer. I heart it in all its chocolate chip bacon cookie glory & liquid sleep (coffee).
I recommend a hand-crafted blood orange soda.
It's totes cute, relaxing atmo. -

not sure why i haven't written a review for Cafe Luz yet... I've been enjoying their drinks and ever changing menu since the first couple of months they opened.
reasons to go here:
1. everything on the menu is made of quality ingredients (and that doesn't mean they're very expensive)
2. there is always something new to eat (most likely seasonal)
3. you can combine any of the ingredients they have to get a hand mixed soda
4. almost everything on the menu is made on site (if the item wasn't made on site, it's probably because the product is doing much more volume and had to move from the onsite Kitchen to their own facilities OR it is just made locally)
5. since Feb. Burger Guys (yes THOSE ones) have been flippin burgers a few times a week for lunch. -

I don't like working close to the courthouses. The environment is not particularly nice. Until recently, there is a dearth of lunch places, and the ones available are not very interesting. When I walked into Cafe Luz, I found myself asking, "what in the world are you doing here?" The giant windows, the tall ceiling, the fixed gears hanging on the wall, and the cozy interior immediately made me forget that I was just on a lunch break. Even before I was seated, I was very comfortable.
So far, the reviews I have seen only mentioned the beverages they serve. I figure something must be said about the food. From what I understand, they have a rotating menu which is updated weekly. They offer an assortment of breakfast items, empanadas, soups, sandwiches, and other dishes.
As a fervent meat eater, I am generally not satisfied by vegetarian fares for lunch. Yet I found myself drawn to the promise of the carrot and jalapeno bisque, roasted turnips, roasted beets and purple sweet potatoes on their "Roasted Root" combo. The distinct flavors from those items complemented each other very well. There is something for every taste bud on the dish: sweet, savory, salty, sour and bitter. Major props to the chef. The dish is very well-thought out. On a separate occasion, I also tried their Guiso, a stew with chorizo and lentils. This hearty soup will keep you warm on a cold winter day.
Moving on to their beverages... I ordered a coffee to go after my meal. As I was walking back to work, I literally stopped in my tracks upon taking my first sip. The coffee is as flavorful as it is bold. The roast isn't particularly dark, and I found the flavor to be more acidic than nutty. I have tried many coffee places in downtown, and this one just might be the best. In fact, the coffee here is so good that it would be a travesty to add cream and sugar to it.
I was initially skeptical with all the 5 star reviews, but I found that the coffee here alone merits the high grade. You would generally expect to find a place like this in the Heights, but not in downtown. I am very grateful that it is within walking distance of my work. I have a feeling I'll be back regularly for my caffeine fix. -

I promised myself I would not write a review for this place. Why? Because I tend to keep the great finds to myself. Cafe Luz serves absolutely the best hot chocolate that I've ever had. I asked "Do you guys have good hot chocolate?"and he responded, "Yes, we have a choice between Mayan, Mexican, Venezuelan dark, and European." My heart overloaded with joy when I realized this wasn't going to be your standard powdered Ghiradelli mix or choco-flavored syrup drink.
Matt (I think his name was) suggested a mix between the Mayan and Mexican. My cup came out with that thick, bubbly, foamy, molten looking top that real hot chocolate should have. It was deep and delicious with a hint of cayenne and cinnamon --- perfection, or so I thought. He then came up to me with a spoon of homemade marshmallows and plopped them into my drink. Now it was perfect. He was very helpful, not to mention, great company as I sat and sipped (or chugged) my drinking chocolate.
I showed him the "Free Cookie" coupon on the Yelp app and he brought out two piping hot bacon chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven. He also brought me a "taste" of the European style hot chocolate. Imagine The Chocolate Bar's hot chocolate, but not too sweet and just as decadent. Sublime is the word to describe the cookies and hot chocolate.
I already have my week planned around getting more goodies from here. You will thank me for sharing my secret spot with you, but I'm sure I will regret it later when this place has a line around the corner for their amazing concoctions. -

I came here with a couple of girlfriends on a cold and windy day. Walking in we had to stop and look around to get our bearings because there was a stark contrast between the downtown streets and this quiet cafe.
My friends commented on how "hipster" it looked with the exposed brick and pipes, and like Bernie K. we found ourselves wondering if we belonged at a place like this. Our fears were assuaged by a helpful woman waiting behind the coffee bar who was very friendly and sincere about helping us find the right drink and food stuffs. After we made our selections we got comfy on the leather couch to discuss our shopping plans until the drinks arrived. And there it was, a steaming pumpkin latte in all it's orangey glory. maybe even two of them? I remember enjoying it thoroughly.
The place is small you may be obligated to make some idle chit chat with other patrons, but all in all an enjoyable and relaxing experience. -

Stopped there with my wife on a visit to Houston a few weeks ago.
Great coffee, tee and pastries. Very relaxing atmosphere, very friendly and accommodating staff. I can only wish we had a place like this in our town. -

If Java is your thing, Cafe Luz sets the bar high. Handcrafted sodas are featured as well. They emphasize locally produced baked goods and dishes. Houston's talent on full display.
Cool downtown location in the historic warehouse district. Great place to relax and get jazzed up on some crafted caffeine. -

Great place for lunch or coffee. Everything is made in-house (right down to the bread and even some of the furniture). They even roast their own coffee. I had probably the best-tasting cappuccino I've had in a while.
This is not the trendy place, or the place to get packaged lunches (i.e. it's the antithesis to Starbucks). It's a neighborhood coffee shop where you can get great food, great coffee, and just hang out.
I also met the owners, who are great to talk to, and indulged my curiosity about the place.
This would easily be my favorite spot if I lived in Houston. -

Went here after a luncheon in downtown with 3 of my friends. I ordered a caffe latte and it was so good I had to get another one. Loved the interiors and ambience. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Loved the software they use on the ipad to charge cards. Very cool.
The only thing disappointing is you have to pay for parking to enjoy a cup of coffee. -

The coolest cafe you could ask for is just hanging out on the edge of Downtown. Full of character and unique in style, Cafe Luz is a perfect sit and chat coffee shop. The menu is full of interesting and delicious things: marshmallows made from malted syrup instead of sugar, egg creams, and bacon cookies. The cookies are fresh baked. Not fresh baked, like "we made a batch this morning and here they are," but fresh baked like they take a chunk of dough and bake you a damn cookie on the spot (If you check-in, you get one free!!!).

This new coffeehouse in downtown Houston offers craft sodas and excellent coffee that is roasted at the cafe. I tried a made-to-order blood orange soda and an iced toddy coffee. Both drinks hit the spot. I had a great conversation about coffee with the owner while I enjoying my drinks. There was a chocolate making class taking place in the back kitchen, which reminded me of the one we enrolled in while visiting Peru. I highly recommend Cafe Luz to those visiting Houston.

Nothing disappoints at CafeLuz -- great people, superior service, and a great, original menu of treats and drinks. One of those places downtown Houston needs, and needs to support.

Had an excellent latte made by Matt. The latte art was beautiful, wonderfully stretched milk, and strong espresso flavor. Very friendly atmosphere. You won't be disappointed. Also, the cafe features local baked goods (like Lucia's empanadas) from Houston bakeries and restaurants.
