You're set for brunch if you can make it here before 11am... I've been many times and have never had to wait more than 15 minutes. The prices are also incredibly reasonable.
As tempted as I am by the sweet side of the menu I normally stick with the breakfast burrito or the tomato, pesto + mozzarella frittata. I favor the burrito because of their delicious home made hot sauce. I've sent the frittata back more than once because it was a little too runny, but I think it's mostly due to the fresh tomato in the dish (and I like my eggs well done).
Next on my list? The lemon ricotta pancakes.
Opting for the savory side of the menu, our group of four came for a late 1pm Sunday brunch. Liking the industrial decor, we were seated in a cramped table that still had the detritus from previous customers.
While most of the tables were full, it took over half an hour to get our food from the time we ordered. But the paninis, and egg plates were generally worth the wait. My huevos ranchero was hearty and flavored nicely with pico and chorizo. Must show my disappointment with the fact that one of the yolks of the fried eggs was broken. Important for someone who loves his eggs runny to have it intact. The wife got the eggs florentine, but the poached eggs were overdone and the yolks were virtually hard. However, the spinach was nicely made and the tasty hollandaise brought the dish together. The La Colombe coffee was good.
After going to the Mad Decent Block Party that proved to be, for lack of better words, Mad Decent, my friends and I were craving some food and decided to seek out a brunch that was mad decent to go along with the flavor of the afternoon. Since I knew Cafe Lift was the closest spot it was my first to recommend. But alas it proved to be just decent.
I definitely see the potential that can lift this place higher. It does brunch six nights a week (closed Mondays), and it doubles as a nice coffeehouse, albeit a La Colombe which by now you know I find to be a mixed bag. But with bottomless cups during brunch it's something I can live with. It's also owned by the people behind Prohibition Taproom which I enjoy.
But the main area where I found Cafe Lift to be lacking was food prep. While I definitely found the potential to make it's menu excellent, there was something about the result that was more than a little inconsistent. The middle portion of my mushroom fritata was divine, especially the parts where you could really taste the gorgonzola. But the crust of it was so dry and bland that I found myself ravaging the center. The home fries style potatoes were excellent when they tasted like potatoes. But too many of them were overcooked to the point that they tasted like rubber!
So it goes without saying that the bar wasn't lifted very high. But it did have enough to merit curiosity. To be continued?
It's nice to have a brunch option where you can park and get a table without waiting an hour - huge bonus. I've probably been here about a dozen times over the past 4 years, and service has always been good. Personally, I like the way the place is set up, with more minimal modern furniture and exposed brick... which makes sense, given that this is in the LOFT district! Food has always been good. Good in that I'm hungry and this warms me up and satisfies me kind of way, not so much the "this fulfills my soul" way. I'll keep going back every so often, as its a fun spot. I do however, really, really wish this wasn't cash only, really need to remind myself to carry cash a bit more often.
I was looking for a chill spot to hunker down with my book and sip endlessly. So I was surprised to find that Cafe Lift was more of an eating spot than a coffee shop.
I was already there, so I figured I might as well explore what Cafe Lift had to offer. It's located on an odd, slightly abandoned, dingy block but the Cafe itself was bright and airy. Lots of tables were available on this Saturday afternoon, but those who were there seemed very content with their drinks and food. I noticed that the staff was very friendly and often knew customers' names and orders!
I ordered a margarita personal pizza and a coffee. The pizza was huge and could have been split between two people for a sizable snack. It was delicious! At $9, the pizza was worth it---thin crust with a nice balance of cheese, pesto, and tomato sauce. The coffee was rich but a little expensive for a standard drip ($2.50).
I'll be back but with friends to share my meal. Lift is definitely not a lounging type of coffeeshop...
Excellent product for a great price. Beautiful space. I tell everyone who will listen about this place. GO NOW.
I LOVE brunch and Cafe Lift did not disappoint. No need to restate what has already been covered in some 53 or so reviews. So what I will say is that I am very happy that I ventured out of my south Philly comfort zone to try Cafe Lift! I had a frittata with spinach, turkey bacon and fresh mozzarella cheese which was served with potatoes and toast for $8.50! The frittata was huge and I enjoyed every morsel. My girlfriend had pancakes...boring, but she cleaned her plate which she rarely does so I consider that a strong indication of how tasty the eats are here. And all for $22.... I'll be checkin' you again Cafe Lift.
Make that 4 1/2...at least for today.
We've been here before, but today they got it absolutely right. Jules had the shrimp salad. I'll have to post the picture of the licked-clean plate! The shrimp was expertly seasoned and the rest of the salad had a perfect potpourri of savory and sweet.
I had the chicken crespelles (Italian crepes). I enjoyed them without a doubt, although Jules thought they were slightly lacking in flavor. That boy is hard to please.
Good job, Cafe Lift! We'll be back...
I felt like I was dining in a hipster office cafeteria. Colorful artwork & furniture, painted pipes on the ceiling, and a laid-back atmosphere. The best part was that we didn't have to wait an hour for seating and that the place was cheaper than most brunch "hot spots" in the city. It was about $22 for 2 people. CASH ONLY!
BUT my food was just ok. My panino had too much bread that the flavors were muddled. Every table seemed to have one person with "Jen's Crespelle"... fancy for eggs & turkey bacon on a crepe with syrup. It was something I might go back to order.
Everything is yummy. Has an industrial look.
Seasoned and grilled just right and comes in nice portions.
Has lots of different things on the menu.
The service can be a bit slow, but it's not bad enough that I'd complain about it.
Cafe Lift is possibly the best quality brunch you can get in Philly for under $15 per person.
I was really looking forward to my brunch on Saturday after reading so many good reviews of this place and hearing that the food was great. Unfortunately my experience at Lift was far from enjoyable.
Service was unbelievably poor. The wait staff were all totally out of it. We had to ask twice for coffee refills and when I asked a waitress for a side plate she said "sure" and went to the restroom.
So, the food...
We ordered two fritattas and a fruit salad. My fruit salad sat on the counter for a good five minutes while I guess our waitress waited for the rest of the food to be done? Granted it was probably the best fruit salad I've ever gotten at a cafe. The eggs were very overcooked and my salmon fritatta had, no joke, at least a quarter cup of capers in it! Totally inedible! It made me wonder if the chef ever tasted a caper?
We finished eating, waited a good long time for our check and even longer for my change.
Too bad, this place has potential, but I highly doubt I will return to see if it's gotten any better.
One of the best brunch joints in Philly!
Delicious coffee and a great menu. I'm absolutely obsessed with the savory chicken crespelle (chicken sauteed with exotic mushrooms, rosemary, white wine and fontina cheese drizzled with white truffle oil). Yum! Worth the $8.50 price tag and every bit as delicious as it sounds.
My only complaint about this place is the tables are way too small. We usually get seated at those teeny-weeny white round tables and if you've got a party of three or more, it can get a bit tight.
I just got from lunch from Cafe Lift, and this little cafe is sweet. It's half a block from Prohibition Taproom and has been on my list of places to go for some time. It's only open for brunch and lunch, and the menu is quite limited. It's a bummer that I forgot to take pictures.
Lift markets itself as a "Euro style cafe" but basically only serves up salads and paninis. Is that euro-style? Despite this, there were a few really good options for the sandwiches, from salmon to prosciutto along with the one token veggie option. I had the Cubano sandwich with grilled pork, smoked ham and pefectly caramelized onions. Top that with fontina cheese and aioli, and you have one delicious sandwich. I had to conciously make myself slow down because it tasted so good.
My sandwich was served with mixed greens on the side with a drop of salad dressing. Overall, it was a weak side dish. Our server was mostly attentive, with the only slip up being a few minutes in between the sandwiches being delivered. That can always be awkward for a second.
Cafe Life has a pretty nice modern atmosphere, and sets a few tables outside with umbrellas when it's nice outside, which I love. This place also serves up brunch, but from the limited lunch menu, I'm guessing that brunch doesn't feature anything outstanding.
Bottom Line: The prices are great here, the food is really good, and it's realatively close to where I work. It's a great little spot, but it's not about to become your new favorite cafe. Still, the paninis are well crafted and it's a great light lunch on a beautiful day.
Our server was very attentive and very quick. I remember thinking how nice it was to see cappuccinos and lattes on the menu. The menu is pretty standard for a brunch destination. Maybe a bit unimaginative, but by no means disappointing - and I'm willing to try them again in hopes to be blown away... The crepey thing I had wasn't bad, and the breakfast potatoes really stood out, they were cooked to a perfect consistency and properly seasoned.
On another note, the atmosphere is reminiscent of an underground NYC nightclub (sans oppressive techno,) which may not be for everyone, but it didn't bother me. Try it out.
holy moly.. this place is awesome. i actually found it on yelp. I had a friend visiting from out of town, and I wanted to take him to brunch before saying sayonara. Yelp people have not let me down. We loved everything about it.
First of all, it's in this completely random location, not really near any other restaurants or stores. But, when you walk in, the industrial urban art deco sets the tone. This is some place different. Definitely wouldn't expect to find it in this area.
The two of us ordered three dishes... simply because there were too many mouthwatering scrumptious options on the menu to choose from. We got the Cannoli French Toast, the smoked salmon bagel, and prosciutto panino. Yummm. I am definitely coming back and bringing more people. Considering the unique blend of ingredients in their dishes, this spot has very very decent prices.
NICE place. Food is eclectic, menu is diverse.
Not sure if they are using organic..or locally grown/made products (do so, if you aren't)!!
The food, service, atmosphere all are ideal. The have a short brunch menu with various things as frittatas, paninis, challah sandwiches, savory chicken dishes, salads, etc. To supplement is their daily special board. Today I had the coffee (top grade) and BLT. Quick service, and great food.
They take cash only (cmon, MC and Visa charge minimal). Parking was easy, check it out!!
we went here for sunday brunch around 12:30 and they were out of EVERYTHING!
no smoked salmon, no pancakes, no eggs florentine...
and those were the things that everyone in my party wanted!!!
the waitress didn't inform us of this until after we'd sat down and decided what we wanted to order...so that was another 10mins of trying to figure out what else to get.
once we did get our food, it was okay.
not bad or good but just okay.
i had french toast. i've made better french toast at home.
my friends said similar things about their food as well.
uncomfortable seating. maybe hipsters don't like cushions? i don't know.
anyways it wasn't bad, but i could have had an equally satisfying meal at home.
and how does a brunch place run out of PANCAKES!?!? lol
This place is straight out of "Stuff White People Like". Seriously.
Let's go down the check list:
Brunch? check!
Asian Girls? check!
Coffee and tea choices besides regular and decaf? check!
Bikes parked outside? Check!
Stupid Art on the Wall? Check!
People best suited for another line of work waiting on you? double check!
Oh I got tired, but it ticks every box.
This place is in a converted warehouse space and that makes it "soooo coool, and grity and like REAL". At least it isn't as obnoxious as Morning Glory and there were actually people from Philadelphia eating there.
The service was horrible. There were three servers on and really not that many tables. I didn't get a napkin or a plate to put my tea bag on. I had to ask for creme for my tea. I didn't get syrup for my french toast. It also took FOREVER to get service, not having to do with the kitchen speed.
My french toast was good--it was wayyyy too sweet but that's my fault. It was marked sweet and it had ricotta on it. My brunching companion's mushroom frittata (co-opted white people speak for an omelet) was delicious.
I think I might try and go not on a weekend, because the food was actually pretty good. The service will probably be better.
Yelp saves the day again! I was looking for a new place to grab brunch on Saturday and stumbled upon the reviews for Cafe Lift. I was immediately smitten and jumped in the car right away to get a table. Luckily, we didn't even have to wait! There were so many yummy things on the menu that it took me about 10 minutes to decide (I ended up going with the Crispelle with crabmeat, spinach, tomatoes and cheese - DELISH! I decided savory over sweet, but damn, those pancakes with homemade whipped cream looked amazing). The service was great, and they kept the La Columbe coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice flowing. Just a few helpful tips for you: 1) You need a key to go to the single serve bathroom (which is very nice, btw) and 2) It's cash only, so be prepared.
The owners are opening a new bar/restaurant on the next block called Prohibition - I'm looking forward to checking it out. In the meantime, I'll be coming back to Cafe Lift to brunch it up on a regular basis.
First off, I'm just gonna say that the "industrial" setting doesn't really do it for me. I'm I the only one? In addition to just looking kind of sad, dark, cheap, and not cozy, my boyfriend and I went on a cold day and the inside of the place was almost as cold as the temperature outside! wtf! And the waitress sat us right next to the ass huge window, we later moved.
It was lunch time, and we both got paninos. I got the tuna artichoke one and my boyfriend got the grilled chicken with an arugula salad. They both were very tasty! I guess the food would be the thing that saves this place for me. I'll have to try their brunch if I ever hit up this spot again.
Coffee is overpriced which sucks - $2.50 for the smallest size?!
The service we got was lackluster (slow, wave to the waitress to get her to see you).
I would give this place another chance in the spring or summertime maybe cause the food was pretty good.
Go when it's warm out!
This place is right by my house, and thank god for that. I've been here twice now, once for lunch and once for breakfast. The thing that I appreciate about everything that I've eaten (and drank) here is the attention to detail and quality. They have updated versions of lots of breakfast classics, for instance, I like their take on eggs benedict. Last time I had the cannoli french toast. I only finished half of it, but it was definitely a delicacy. They give you large portions, so don't worry about leaving hungry.
Basically, they offer the full package: great brunch, good coffee/tea, pleasant, laid back atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly too, even though they get accused of being too hipster.
My second visit to Cafe Lift was even better than the first. I went with my boyfriend, who lives only a few blocks from Sabrina's. I told him that like Sabrina's, the food would be awesome and creative... and that unlike Sabrina's, there would be no hour-long waits outside, no hosts picking and choosing the next diners based on god-only-knows what criteria, and no elbow pads necessary as there would be ample room between tables. We walked in and sat down immediately.
Once my coffee was placed on the table, I searched the vicinity like a junkie for Sweet'N Low, but there were no pink packets in sight. Our server saved the day by procuring some from behind a counter. A few minutes later, she dropped off some complimentary chocolate chip bread pudding. I forgot all about that from last time so it was a nice surprise and really good.
My fritatta special with breakfast sausage, jack cheese and spinach was great. The bf had a panini with prosciutto, sharp provolone and some other items, which he loved.
Part of me wants to be greedy and not share Cafe Lift with others, but I also want this place to be around for a long, long time so I am obligated to spread the word. Get thyself to brunch!

Huevos rancheros and delicious coffee count me in.
Cafe Lift is an awesome little brunch spot, making a strong play to be one of my favorites. There were about 10 items on the menu that I wanted, but settled on my favorite morning time treat. They were not too traditional, but they were delicious, and my brunch date's eggs with crab and magic (not sure if they actually used magic, but...) were fantastic too. I was more than glad to help her finish the plate.
The decor is open and friendly with seating for couples and groups. I guess my only gripe is that it is cash only and I had to run up to 12 and Spring Garden in the rain to hit an ATM (2.75 connivence fee, ouch).
I've lived around the corner from Cafe Lift for a year now, and I only just went there for the first time about a month ago. I went again this morning, and I have to say, I really like this place. I wish I had started going there sooner.
Cafe Lift is a lunch/brunch place located on the bottom floor of a new-ish loft/condo building. The decor is industrial chic, with concrete ceilings, exposed air ducts, and colorful but streamlined furnishings. If you're flying solo, you can eat at the counter, or you can settle into one of their many tables if you go with friends. The cafe is also a good place to see work by local artists displayed on the walls.
The food selection is wonderful - exactly what I want in a brunch. Their brunch menu usually consists of various frittatas, paninis, and other breakfast foods. I especially like the Jens Crespelle (eggs, turkey bacon, and fontina in an Italian-style crepe covered in maple syrup) and their various frittatas. I had the proscuitto frittata today, only I substituted tomatoes for the roasted red peppers. The eggs in the frittata are airy and perfectly cooked, and the proscuitto, gorgonzola, tomatoes, and sweet onions complemented each other very well. I imagine that their pizzas, salads, and paninis are also good, given that they use a lot of good cheeses, etc. in their food. I'm also happy that they have fresh-squeezed orange juice, and their coffee is very good.
The staff is friendly, although I did not get free bread pudding as an appetizer either time I've visited (maybe Keith M. is special?). I definitely recommend this place if you're in search of a good brunch spot or if you live in the area (so-called "Loft District," but it's really misfit area around Broad and Spring Garden that's not really a neighborhood yet).
This place is a wonderful spot to stop by for coffee (regular, latte, etc.), lunch during the week, or brunch on the weekends. It's also hipster-central, so expect a younger, urban clientele.
In search of the perfect blend of sweet-and-salty breakfast, I found myself not too long ago sitting in a plastic chair in an industrial warehouse-turned-cafe.
Three words: Cannoli French Toast
I am a self-described brunch whore, and this may just be my new favorite place. I don't care that it's located away from everything else I might frequent in this city. I don't care that in six months it will have a Sabrinas-length wait because we Yelpers spread the word. It's ok - I'm willing to share the love.
Thanks to Keith M for telling me about this place! Went to brunch on Sunday and it wasn't busy (I went around 10:30-11AM). Had the eggs florentine, it was delicious! The decor is nice, nothing too fancy, very comfortable and hip. The service was great, no complaints about this place.
Parking is street, but if you go early on Sunday, the parking is plentiful in the area. Also, meters are still free on Sunday here.
Love the brunch here. I've enjoyed the food every time at Cafe Lift, especially the lack of waiting compared to Honey's or Sabrinas. The one complaint my friends have is that the exhaust system deserves only one star. Yeah, it's true. You go home and your clothes, your hair, it all smells like the grill.
I dont mind it so much except it makes me hungry all day. My one friend, she's a bit more dramatic; she runs home to shower!
I'd totally recommend this place to a friend and ...come to think of it, I'm over due back!
Cafe Lift is my favorite brunch spot.
The food is great and reasonably priced, the staff is awesome and they give you free bread pudding as an appetizer.
Their menu has good variety from breakfast classics like eggs benedict and huevos rancheros to creative fritatas and pancakes. With all you can drink coffee you can't go wrong.
move over sabrina's....i think i have found a new brunch love.
part of me didn't want to write this review, because i'm selfish. i want to keep this place all for myself. but i can't help it. i can tell you that since i've been here, i've been telling everyone about this place. it's like when you're in a new happy relationship and you want everyone to know and you can't stop thinking about it.
well, that's me and cafe lift. the food--amazing...anything from sweet to savory (how bout those lemon ricotta pancakes?!?!?!). coffee--la colombe. dingy warehouse setting. and you can sit at the counter and have a very zen breakfast on your own. it makes getting up worth it.
This family-run cafe / restaurant is really more like a European cafe than almost any place in Philadelphia. The coffee is La Colombe. The service is wonderful, and the food is truly wonderful, with a brunch menu on weekends with a lunch menu on weekdays. While a little off the beaten track, it's still walking distance from almost any location in Center City and a great value.
The same family runs a bar-restaurant, Prohibition, just up the street. The food there is different, but equally high quality and well-priced.
upon yelp recommendation i ventured up this morning for brunch with a small group. there was some confusion, as no one really knew what to call the neighborhood and some were a little skeptical about the location.
look for the red "cafe" sign.
the neighborhood looks treeless and depressing, but there's nothing to worry about, and plenty of parking!
i didn't find the decor cold at all; i enjoyed the funky chandeliers and excess of stainless steel. it's not cozy, but it's not a décor icebox either.
the temperature, however, was definitely cold. i had my arms wrapped around myself the whole time. the very large windows must make it difficult to keep warm.
anyway, the food! most excellent. very reasonable prices and delicious. i had a breakfast toastada special, which came in a very large portion with nicely seasoned potatoes.
all of the food was prepared and plated very well, and quickly. potatoes were soft with crisp skin, no rubber. the chicken in my dish was moist, the spices and salsa well balanced and the cheese melted perfectly.
they offer a very nice variety of sodas, including aranciata and limonata, along with a decent coffee and tea menu.
they gave our table three complimentary portions of the chocolate chip bread pudding. i normally do not like bread pudding, but theirs is very good. soft, moist, and not at all bland. the chocolate and whipped cream help, of course.
service was okay. our waitress made a small error on our drink order and couldn't recall who ordered what, or who had coffee. nothing too terrible.
don't forget: cash only! there is an atm in there, but it looks like the type to charge you $3 for your $20 withdrawal. if you belong to citizen bank, there is a branch about two blocks away.
the location is very convenient to public transportation: broad street line to either race-vine or spring garden, or the 23 bus.
The physical Cafe Lift is a very cool space indeed. The food is outstanding with the ricotta pancakes superlative. Coffee always outstanding with the menu different and items very good. Service always accommodating. Been patronizing since they opened but they lost me to Cafe Estelle on their insistence on cash only. I can understand not taking American Express because of their high rate, but a healthy business like Cafe Lift can afford Master/Visa at their less than 2% rate.
Ok, please do not overrun this place like Honey's and Cafe Estelle...let's have some order people! :)
After reading reviews here, I brought some out of town guests for Brunch on a Sunday. We walked north from Spring Garden and we thought to ourselves, where the hell are we going? If you're able to eliminate the victim visualization of the opening scene of CSI from your imagination, you'll be fine.
The food was an out and out homerun, three of us had Frittatas and I had the Huevos Rancheros (best I've ever had). Multiple refills of La Colombe coffee and friendly, efficient service from a very cute waiter.
What else could you want?
Caveat: Bring cash..that's the only annoying practice...it's cash only. If you somehow forget there's an ATM inside in the corner which is weird. MC/Visa isn't expensive, c'mon guys.
I walked in with the plan of getting coffee and a seat. Got got the coffee but there was nowhere to sit. There are two separate seating sections but i wasn't sure whether I could sit without being seated. The condiment station looked more like the waiter's station. I felt like I was in the way when I added cream and sugar to my coffee. The coffee was a strong as the attitude of the staff milling about. There was a hint of pretension in the air. Cafe Lift did not lift me up. I've passed this place many times and wanted to check it out. I was disappointed. At the moment, I am not a fan of Cafe Lift, sorry.
I really like the food here.. Perfect place to hang out and enjoy yourself. I wish the a.m coffee would drop in price a little bit though.. i'd go here everyday if that happened
We live in the 'hood and this is one of the few places that is outstanding. We only go for weekend brunch since its a B&L place and we work during the day. Their is rarely a wait but its pretty busy. They have yummy brunch stuff and interesting specials. I like Jen's Crespelle which is a savory and sweet with sausage, egg and maple syrup (I haven't been in a while so forgive my lack of food detail.)
Its cute and yummy.
I ate here this morning. I ate at Cafe Lift also about a year ago too. This place is great- the food is excellent, the make these Italian crepes that taste soooooo good. I like that there are alot of options on the menu. It's alot of choices, and alot of good choices. I also prefer the ambience of Cafe Lift, and the art on the walls was really amazing, I wish I could have known who the artist was. yum.
Wow... How have I not written about the fabulousness that is Cafe Lift?! It's an amzing little place, well off the beaten path. Brunch here is a magical experience, and well worth the wait! The food is amazing - Pumpkin Challah French Toast for example - and the portions are very robust, the coffee grand and bold in flavor, and the ambiance is wonderful! Cafe Lift is very urban chic with exposed duct-work, chunky plastic chairs, polished concrete counters, and various hues and styles of steel. If you like brunch, this is definitely worth checking out!
I love this place! totally random location with not much around as far as businesses go. the interior is this great modern loft space. the best part- no wait for a really fantastic breakfast. i usually order the lemon ricotta pancakes- light and fluffy with the right amount of lemon flavor- super good! they also have the perfect answer to the savory vs sweet breakfast dilemma. a sweet crepe filled with eggs, cheese, and sausage- yum! the only thing I can't rave about is the OJ. they say its fresh but that's debatable. still good but has a watery taste to it. coffee though is quite good. my new fave breakfast place in the city!
This place is right around the corner from my job and I go on a weekly basis and check their menu daily. I've enjoyed everything that I've tasted so far...their paninis are the best and the flavors that Chef Mike puts together are just outstanding. The atmosphere is great and fun. Their cookies are to die for, their iced chai tea is delicious and their soups!!! Whew...my ultimate favorite is the crab bisque, I'd eat it everyday if they offered it everyday. The tortilla soup is delicious as well. Their specials are really yummy and everything is cooked deliciously. The only two items that I am not too crazy about are the idaho potato soup (the texture is kinda funky in my mouth) and the apple cider wrap (it had way too much mayo.) Their wait staff is so friendly and there use to be a cashier there who was absolutely gorgeous...
Other then that...check this place out...it's worth every penny. Next, I'll try to go for brunch!
