We love Cafe Lago! It's a friendly, comfortable neighborhood place with really high quality food.
I am addicted to the Peruvian Chicken Risotto! It's full of cilantro and very tasty - always enough to take left-overs home for a second meal. The soups are always delicious - especially the gazpacho in the summer and the hearty soups in the winter.
The Cuban Pork Roast Sandwich is always a sure bet - my boyfriend's favorite.
The desserts are really hard to resist, and they're worth the calories - all fresh and wonderful. I enjoy bringing lots of people because there's something on the menu for everyone. Great vegetarian dishes.
When the weather is nice the patio is a treat - real fireplace and dog-friendly. There's nothing better than Sangria on the patio - maybe with a batch of sweet potato fries.
The service is always warm and friendly, and the prices are very fair. -

I went to Cafe Lago with pup in tow for brunch with my sister, some friends, & their dogs on the patio.
I had a veggie omelet while everyone else had the chilaquiles. The chilaquiles seemed to go over well but my veggie omelet was not good. It was overcooked and had onions in it after I had specifically asked for no onions. The side of papitas was also pretty dry. Cafe Lago is a dog-friendly patio (the first in Dallas) and they have a great puppy menu. My pup had the scrambled eggs with turkey. His eggs weren't overcooked. The dogs were also provided water bowls immediately, which was super nice. The staff is super friendly and provided good customer service.
I wasn't impressed with the food this time but am willing to give it another go if my friends would like to come back plus any place that accepts my pup is fine with me! -

I don't understand how they can print on the menu to monitor cell phone usage and loud children and not mention anything about annoying dogs on the patio. Give the dog a bone and leave it at home. The food is ok, nothing to write home about maybe worth feeding it to the dogs.

This is a must. Great Dallas eating at a very reasonable price for the caliber of freshness, preparation and presentation. Don't miss this treat.

Delicious place where every single thing on the menu can be expected to be made of good quality and genuinely healthy. I had the salmon fillet, and I wish I would have asked them to use minimal salt, but that is my only complaint. My friend had the Lago burger and they grind and season their own beef. Definitely can tell the difference. Quite a nice find.

My family and I enjoyed the food and the live jazz band for Sunday brunch. BUT this place is comically judgmental. I'm glad to see that many other reviewers have sufficiently covered how off-putting the owner is. For us, even the servers seemed judgmental though. We enjoyed it despite the entire staff's attitude and the paragraphs full of condescending instructions on how to behave properly in public (on the kids' menu). I guess if it was just a little judgmental then we would have been annoyed, but it was SO condescending that we just found it hilarious. I mean, don't get me wrong, obviously we will never go back. But at least we can laugh about it whenever we drive by.

I was back here for brunch over the weekend, and it was better than ever! Special of the day was a Greek omelette - with olives, feta cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes. It was perfectly cooked and ever-so-tasty. We also tried the quiche lorraine, which was filled with cheese and diced bits of smoky ham. My fork kept straying across the table for samples.
Service was great, and they were much busier than usual - which was nice to see. Seems like the haters can't quite keep this place down.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Two of us went, he said it was OK = 3 stars... I said 4 because they have a permit for puppies on the patio. I did not experience ANY of the madness I saw in the other reviews and I could care less about the price vs. location of an establishment. The food was spot on, coffee was refilled, service was impeccable and I like the modern decor. I added some pics... all those reviews and no pics? As for comments about no atmosphere, I thought it was zen like colorful and clean... lots of window's, art on the walls and did I mention clean?
Hint: The food arrives looking just like the pics on the menu... so use those to browse! -

This is my absolute favorite place to eat healthy and eat tasty! Great service, always good. I have turned all my friends and family onto this little gem that is conveniently located off Garland Road. I have never had bad food or service here. You can eat a good meal for $10-$12 and its healthy!

I always stop by here whenever I'm on this side of town. It's right off of Garland Road, but it's not too noisy and the patio is nice. The service is consistently great - you'll never have an unanswered question or a glass that goes without a refill here. Try the roasted veggie sandwich. Also, their fries are vegetarian-friendly because they only cook veggies in the fryer.

Cafe Lago has the most delicious tomato and artichoke salad ever! The dressing is delicious and I love the seasonings on all the veggies! Lots of attention to detail went into slicing all the veggies. Wonderful service. A nice place to sit and read the Dallas Morning News. Now I'm reading Mario Tarrdell's review of George Strait and listening to a waterfall trickle. It's casual and welcoming. Yum!

After reading so many negative reviews, we had to try this place out. Must be gluttons for punishment.
Positives:
The club sandwich, smoked salmon sandwich and tomato and mozzarella salad were all very good. The club is on the bigger side in serving size, with a hearty chicken breast, ham and bacon. I had mine with very light and crisp sweet potato fries.
Service was very attentive and friendly.
Negative:
Price. A big club sandwich, small half-sandwich with side salad and one iced tea set us back $31. The items off the menu added up to a fairly reasonable $23, but they hit you will upgrade charges for everything. The menu is a bit deceiving in that is provides options, but only a price "range" vs. a cost for each item. Be sure to ask what the charge is if you order with any changes.
Also, if you like an atmosphere, there was not much of one on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Only one other table of customers. Meh.
I might be able to deal high prices like this at a nicer establishment in Uptown, downtown or even a funky Bishop Arts place, but a generic strip with no atmosphere or view off of Garland Road?
MEH! -

The food here is pretty good. They have fantastic desserts, and a pretty good breakfast. But, it just kind of seems *wrong*. They just started doing table service, and it's like they haven't ironed out all the wrinkles yet. The server was absurdly attentive when we went: Not only bringing our breakfast and coffee to the table, but actually insisting on pouring our cream. It was just wierd. That said, when we go, if the owner is there, we'll turn around and leave. We've seen the way she talks to her staff, and it's really uncomfortable. I feel like I'm being served by a teenager who just got busted for drinking. They look scared to be there.
If you do go, the breakfast egg and cheese croissant sandwich is great. For lunch the straight up grilled chicken sandwich is surprisingly flavorful for such basic fare. The homemade potato chips add a nice twist.
But, lady, lighten up on your servers! You make it uncomfortable for the rest of us. -

Cute patio. healthy food. Portions are not super big. Staff is seemingly beaten down by the owner. But this is a great healthy lunch on a patio. Great place to take Mom or a girlfriend. Bonnie Ruth's down the road, might be a better option somehow. But Cafe Lago has healthy clean meals. maybe a little expensive.
ps. Did I mention that I've heard several stories of how the owner is extremely rude, including my own.
order - whatever the staff recommends
the pork sandwich!!
don't expect big portions
I like the patio
ps. Did I mention - AVOID THE OWNER. -

I live in the neighborhood and enjoy the fresh ingredients and variety offered on this menu. There is a relaxed atmosphere, a great patio and free wi-fi. The corn pudding is a MUST and by far the best item on the menu. I dislike their chips and fries. The soups are generally very tasty.
The desserts are always very yummy and fresh! Save room!
The waitstaff is generally teenagers, as other reviewers have noted. I have not noticed any untoward behavior from the owner, but I do sense that she runs a tight ship and have witnessed the staff running around, apparently stressed, even when there are very few customers in the store. Generally speaking though, it's a good dining experience. -

I've never seen the owner do anything weird like most of the other posts here. The food is actually very good if a little overpriced -- or maybe I should say overpriced for my wallet. I don't like spending $40 on breakfast. But the lack of choices on Garland Rd. frequently make this an option. Waaay better than the nearby overrated Barbec's and the frankly unappetizing Another Broken Egg. My one request to the owner of Lago is to be a bit more flexible with customer requests and stop it with the half & half portion control! Also, get some better music in there pronto. I think this place needs to figure out who they are actually catering to. Is it the relatively affluent Casa Linda/Little Forest Hills crowd or are they catering to the cranky, lone nutters who apparently can't stand any form of noise other than the rustling of their well-thumbed newspapers?

Wow, what an experience. And not in a good way. Since Another Broken Egg was overloaded for Mother's Day, Highland Cafe being closed, and a line going out the door at Barbec's we were left with Cafe Lago to treat our Mom. I had been here once before and had a bad experience both with the food and the crabby owner, but I thought "why not? Let's give it another try." Today, I had the last meal I will ever eat at this restaurant.
With no line and hardly anyone sitting inside, it was almost comical when the teenage waiter asked us if we had a reservation. We told him we didn't and he gave us a nice table by the window. He was courteous and took our drink order and everything seemed as if it would go well.
After about 10-15 minutes someone finally came over and took our order. My brother asked if the breakfast tacos had onions in them and the waiter said he could probably have them taken out. Fine. So we're sitting for about a half hour and our food hasn't arrived. While we waited we couldn't help but hear the crabby owner snap at her waitstaff about bussing tables etc. There's no other way to put this. She's a bitch.
So the poor waiter that had been screamed at by his boss finally comes over to our table and VERY nervously says that he just found out that onions are cooked into the beans that are in the tacos and apologized and dropped off a menu for my brother to choose something else. My brother says "you're just telling me this now? We've been waiting for over a half an hour and now I'm supposed to pick something else?" He said "I'm sorry, but we're very busy and I just found out." I said "you're not that busy and besides nobody here has any food on their table!"
Enter the loony, menopausal owner. She arrived at our table with such force it was alarming. We all wondered what we had done wrong as we sat and waited to be cained. She said to my brother "the onions are cooked into the beans so you'll have to pick something else if it's a health issue, if it's a taste issue we can do something to cover up the flavor of the onion. what would you like me to do?" he said "yea, but we've been sitting here for 45 minutes and you're just now telling me this?" she said very firmly "sir, my staff isn't that well trained on the menu so I'm trying to resolve the issue now. what else would you like?" No apology ever came out of her mouth and her defensiveness was just off-putting.
So long story short, my brother ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, even though we were warned that "if you order anything grilled it will just take longer" and the chicken was pink on the inside. I hope my brother isn't throwing up right now.
The end result? This crazy loon has no business running a business of her own. The tension in that place is so thick you could cut it with a knife. We couldn't wait to get out of there because the atmosphere was just plain uncomfortable. The waitstaff is on edge because one false move and they're probably dead meat. It was just an unpleasant experience to have to sit and try to have a nice Mother's Day brunch and be forced to listen to the owner mistreat patrons and her employees.
I had a similar experience once before at this place with the owner. I would never recommend this place to a friend, in fact, I wouldn't even recommend it to my worst enemy.
The only reason one should go here is to see what a human ticking time bomb actually looks like. -

The worst restaurant in Dallas. Terrible food, slooow service, and they charge extra for separate checks. Who ever heard of such a thing? They didn't give us our copies of credit card receipts and I got the feeling something underhanded was going on.

I read the reviews after I had brunch there - I did wonder why it was so empty on a Sunday brunch. But my food was good, the service fine, the patio absolutely darling. The prices seemed a little high (especially with lack of side items) but not horribly so. I saw many items in the glass case that looked fantastic.

Food is good, not great. It is on the expensive side. The owner puts me on edge. She reminds me of the soup Nazi from Seinfeld.

Not to sound the same note again, but the owner really DOES seem crazy and has no personal skills, much less business skills. She's incredibly rude to customers and to her employees. The last time I ate there, my girlfriend and I ate full breakfasts while our friend waited 35 minutes for a muffin. Meanwhile, the owner called the waitstaff into the back and screamed at them for a long time, audible to every customer. People at every table were exchanging shocked looks because it was so loud. Everyone there seemed to feel ill at ease after that. Since it's in my neighborhood, I tried Cafe Lago several times, hoping against hope that it would get better. But each time I went, the service was lame, the owner was acting like a lunatic and the food wasn't that great. I thought that there was something she didn't like about me until I read customer reviews detailing her abuse. How this place stays in business mystifies me. If you're out by White Rock Lake, check our Another Broken Egg or Bonnie Ruth's. Let this place go out of business and maybe something good will take its place. Don't enable people who treat paying customers like scum and their employees like dogs.
