Review from Angie I.
Tartine is a great place to go for brunch on a sunny day, or for dessert in the evening.
They have lots of outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade (as well as tables in the sun) and many seats inside.
They are willing to make meat substitutions and gave large portions, and nothing felt heavy or oily. I was also surprised by the wide array of choices on the menu. They have grilled items, sandwiches, breakfast food, pastries, cakes, and drinks.
With some breakfasts you are given a choice between toast, a baguette, and some rolls. If you choose toast, they'll give you two well-toasted slices. The baguettes, although smaller, are warm and fresh!
The decadence cake was exactly that; it was rich and dark and sweet; great for a dark chocolate lover! My fiance tried the lemon cake which was surprisingly light (although the slice they gave him was huge!).
If you're coming to the cafe to work, there are outlets along a side wall by some of the tables. -

La Tartine doesn't post their hours at the door. Sometimes they like to close earlier for weeks at a time and they keep it a secret.
The pastries and cookies are delicious though. -

Cafe La Tartine surprised me-- all these years I've been walking by, I thought it was just a pastry place. Lo and behold, they actually have some decent, healthy items on the menu. 3-4 salads to choose from that can easily be modified to strictly vegetarian as well as some yummy breakfast items and sandwiches.
I had the Vegetarian Ciabiatta that automatically comes with a side salad. This side salad with olives, ity bity, tiny miniature pickles and vinaigrette was delicious. I could of had a whole plate of that! Food was super fresh and delicious!
We were there late in the day-- before a movie and it was perfect. They served us so fast, we still had plenty of time to kill. If you're in this area, this is a great, quick spot to stop and grab a bite.Listed in: Lunch time, In a hurry?

There food is great if you order straight off the menu, but they have a really hard time with special orders (and I'm all about the special order!).
The idea of crispy hashbrowns is lost on them and very often the servers don't know what's in the food. It's not great for those of us with allergies, but for everyone else it's good basic food. -

We love this place for their pastries, coffee, and general relaxing atmosphere .
On our last trip there was confusion on our order. As I was finally enjoying my awesome quiche the lady brought us complimentary cream puffs to say she was sorry. What a wonderful surprise!! Lately it seems that when a business makes a mistake they just shrug their shoulders and say "Oh we'll". It is so nice that they actually care about us here. -

Overall, I'd give Cafe La Tartine more of my business.
The first time I came here, I tried a pear salad. The veges were okay, but the dressing tasted unpleasant (not rotten, just not a flavor I enjoyed). My friend said his fish and chips were good.
The second time, I was having a frustrating day, so I went straight for the damn-the-calorie-torpedos burger with grilled onions and avocado with fries on the side. The burger was pretty well made, and they didn't skimp on the toppings. The fries were acceptable, but I've had better. My friends enjoyed their food, though I forget what they ordered.
Dessert was great. One of my buddies got a slice of chocolate cake and gave it two thumbs up. I tried their creme brulee, and although the counter person could have given it another second or two with the blowtorch -- I like my creme brulee with a golden-brown crust, and this was barely golden -- the custard itself was excellent, with a nice strong vanilla flavor.
Service was friendly and helpful and the food came out pretty promptly. Good choice for a meal before your movie. -

Love love this place for lunch. Around my work area this is one of the best sandwich bakery places...that I know of...as of yet.
Every sandwich I have ordered I have enjoyed. Every salad I have order I have enjoyed. And to top it off I always order a nice slice of warm bread pudding to share.
I have never had any problems here, and the workers are always friendly.
Give it a shot. =) -

I love Cafe Tartine.I really do because they have all these sweets on display. What is not to like about that. This cafe is a good size, nice ambiance and clean. The times when I have come here the staff have been nice and quick with taking orders.
The first time I came here I got the red velvet cake. The other times I have tasted the german chocolate cake, lemon tart pie and the quiche. Let me tell you it was simply a tasty experience indeed. They also serve many other things such as breakfast too. They also have a tasty burger that came with fries. I really enjoyed that too. Prices vary, but I don't think it is that expensive either.
I am known not to have a sweet tooth, but lately I really can't deny it anymore. It has taken over my taste buds people.
This place is worth a try. They have many things on display. I just can't understand why I don't see the red velvet cake anymore.
4.5 stars.
I love it.Listed in: Breakfast, Juicy Burgers

Need to kill a bit of time before a movie? Need a quick caffeinated pick-me-up after the movie before your drive home? Want a tasty creme puff? Stop in here!
I remember this place having more "comfy" seating in the past, but now it is mostly small tables and normal cafe chairs. It doesn't quite have the feeling of a place where you want to sit and work - though there was someone reading. The people coming over from the theater tends to make it a bit noisy.
They have cafe food, but really you should just have desserts. They have gorgeous looking pastries. I behaved myself and had one mini creme puff. It was perfect - I can think of few things that would make me as happy as having 10 of these. I had a double espresso and my partner had a beer. They have a decent beer selection (in bottles) and they also offer a variety of drip coffee brews. -

Came here to satisfy my sweet tooth!!!
I ordered:
1) Banana cream pie: 3.5/5
2) Trio Chocolate: 3.5/5
The two items I ordered were solid! I really enjoyed both. The ambiance and staff were really friendly as well. There are plenty of chairs/tables to mingle with your clients/friends/co-workers.
The Cafe is located right in the heart of RWC! I can't wait to come back to try more pastries and drinks!!! -
Review from Athena S.
I used to spend plenty of time here when working for a Palo Alto startup. I had to do work and not be right smack downtown Paly so I'd end up here.
It's a cool spot, and given RWC has no real good cafes, this one reigns by default.
* Lots of suiters by day, lots of everything else in the eves/weekends.
* Good drip coffee, teas are impressive, excellent Euro style snacks, healthy options and light breakfasts.
There are some way overrated desserts - sometimes things look better than they taste....with some exceptions.
The end. -

Good soups and sandwiches. The deserts are not half bad as well. Haven't tried their coffee yet but intend to. It is a nice place to grab a bite to eat before or after you go to the movies that is directly across from them. Their lunch specials are good but a bit pricey but compared to what is around them not as much. The service is okay and if it's your first time going there you might want to stay at the counter if you ordered a bottled drink or soup as they don't tell you after you paid that it will not be delivered to your seat with the other food you ordered and will be left at the counter.

Review from James H.
There is a ton of potential in this place. The location is about as good as it gets in downtown RWC - right across from the theatre, off Broadway, near a bunch of other restaurants. My only problem is the food was underwhelming both times I was there to order meals, and the service wasn't great (both times, dishes were forgotten and we had to flag down the waitstaff to remind them of it. It's still a nice little local hangout, and they have pretty good tea / hot chocolate. Haven't tried the baked goods but they look pretty good too.
Definitely a crowded spot though on Friday/Saturday nights, due to the movie-going crowd spilling into the restaurant before and after showings. -

Redwood City, CA
Café Tartine is an inextricable part of my morning routine because 1) it has fast & free wi-fi, 2) healthy food options, 3) a nice atmosphere and 4) it's right by the CalTrain station. In the mornings it's the perfect place for a self employed person to get a break from the house and get some emails out. The hot drinks (coffees, teas, etc) are large and consistently good. The desserts here are not exceptional but the chocolate trio is very good as are the seasonal desserts they bring out each autumn. Tartine is also open late & next to the movie theatre which makes it a good dessert destination on weekends. Quick hint: if you're a big tea drinker but are tight on cash specify that you want "Stash tea". They charge about a dollar less for the Stash brand than they do for their default brand, Forté.
Some folks have complaints about slow service and mediocre food but for my needs this is exactly the place to be and I recommend it to everyone. A gem in Redwood City. -

My friend had only tea and I had just a decaf mocha, but our experience was quite nice. Parking was a bit tight (and for-pay) across the street, but once inside, the place is rather chill with ample seating. The woman who took our order was friendly and helpful, and my mocha was rich and creamy and very tasty.

Great little hole in the wall!! Stopped by for a quick breakfast snack before watching a movie at Century 20. Also the service was great, since the person taking my order made a mistake with my order and our waitress promptly took care of the mistake. Will definitely return next time I go to a matinee at C20.

Review from Jaime C.
If this place serves more than just pastries, then maybe I should hold off my review until I try some of their sandwiches....naaaahhh.
I've been here twice. This is weird, because I'm almost never in Redwood City. After no dessert option at Milagros, we walked over to Cafe La Tartine (it was the only thing open with dessert for some reason). I ordered a butterscotch pudding, and he ordered the carrot cake.
First thing we notice: RICH. SUPER RICH.
I have a standard from which to measure all butterscotch puddings from. A dear friend is a pastry chef, and I was privy to his culinary concoctions almost nightly. I pitched a fit when I found out my parents ate all my butterscotch pudding he had made for me...so I brought the next tub of it to work and ate it for breakfast.
This was not that butterscotch pudding. Maybe because it was super hardened by the refrigeration, but it was too spicy. Not in the cayenne-pepper/chili flakes sense - just...too spicy for a dessert. The butterscotch didn't pop out at me, it wasn't creamy enough, and the color wasn't very vibrant.
Husband's carrot cake was pushed away after only five bites before he said, "Too rich." The tea and coffee were perfect, especially the tea. I had a lemon tart here that was fantastic, so don't take my review for their butterscotch pudding as an indication of their entire selection. I would love to come back and try their lunch menu, just so I can get a full feel for the cafe as a whole. Next time we see a movie, maybe we'll make it a matinee for another excuse to come. -

We've been coming here off and on on the weekends mostly. Most staff here seem nice enough but this same lady behind the counter sure looked grumpy.. And just isn't very responsive.
**Scenario:
My husband at counter walked back to the counter with quiche on plate. Issue: quiche isn't hot enough inside.
Husband standing at counter for, oh, like a minute.
Not-so-friendly gal finally walked by him because she was filling a coffee for a customer, glanced at my husband and asked, "can i help you?"
Husband: this quiche isn't hot enough. can you warm it up for me?
Not-so-friendly gal walked away..
... ... er...
note: She didn't say anything back to him like, "oh, I'll be right back with you."
she walked back to the cashier. took care of the customer, and came back to him, took the quiche and warmed it up. She did manage to smile when she hands it back to him.***
So... It's not like she's BAD cuz she did help him. But non-communicative style was just a bit weird for front-end customer service, y'wkno? The fries I got w/my burger were also a bit soggy today. I'd have downgrade this place to a 3-star if it wasn't this wonderful heavy-set lady who buses the table-- she works diligently and quietly, interacts with customers politely and is helpful to me---When she came to my table and cleaning up the plates, she noticed my tea was empty and asked me if I want more hot water. I said yes, and realized she only buses table and that I should do it. I said, "I can take it." And she smiled and gestured that she can and took my cup for me to refill. I hope the owner notices her good work and gives her the appropriate compensation. I visit this place often on weekends and now It actually makes me feel better when I see her here. And of course I'd keep coming back because there are plenty of seats so I can easily find a spot to relax a while. :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Redwood City, CA
I've been enjoying la tartines food and location and occasional functioning wifi over the years. There is one reason I do not frequent the restaurant more often - the poor attitude of the one woman who works the counter. I felt compelled to offer a review because I see other reviewers noticed the same, in other words it isn't just "me". This woman displays a negative, condescending attitude. I asked a few questions while ordering (not a line, brought in a few friends) and from there it was as if she was going to teach me a lesson.
There are other places I recommend downtown where you get the service and common courtesy a customer should be afforded. -

These people do.
Finally getting caught up on my reviews after the SB Wine Country excursion. Was up in Redwood City for a day business trip. Stopped into this cute cafe in the redeveloped Redwood City Downtown (with more projects soon to come) with some business colleagues. Everyone ordered sandwiches and an order of cookies from the dessert case.
Sandwiches were outstanding! I enjoyed my Turkey & Brie on Focaccia; my colleagues enjoyed their sandwiches particularly the tri-tip. Cookies from the well-stocked dessert case were nice and fresh too.
Service, as others have mentioned is painfully slow and not very polished. Given that the downtown of Redwood City has a few years until it is completely revitalized, Cafe La Tartine should definitely work on that aspect. Pricing is reasonable; comparable to a chain like Panera.
But that nitpicking aside, if I'm in this area again for lunch I would definitely visit this place. -
Review from Golda R.
This would be my breakfast place with friends every Sunday when I used to go to church in Redwood City. I like that you pay once you order and then they bring you your food. They have a wide variety of dessert and pastry to choose from as well as good breakfast plates.
I think this place is great for just breakfast and dessert. Its a nice place to lounge around. My docked star is because they stop serving breakfast after 3pm. Sandwiches are okay. -
Review from Tram T.
Great space, free internet, nice hustle and bustle of a coffee shop, and delicious looking pastries (that I didn't get a chance to try =/ )
I had the white mocha, which was pretty good (made with Ghiradelli white chocoloate powder), but nothing exceptional.
The only thing was, oh man...the service was ridiculously slow! The barista was so ditzy, it was ridiculous. She took forever just to count the money I gave her (3 nickels and 1 dime = 25 cents). It literally took her over 45 seconds to count, recount, and figure out how much money I gave her. She asked me the same question twice (as well as the customers in front of me). When she made my coffee, she initially made the wrong one and implied that it was my fault because she "heard me wrong" when I ordered. Irk!! It took over 5 minutes just to get one order in get my order made. LAME! -

Redwood City, CA
We used to be a fan of Tartine - esp for its breakfasts and outside area. However we will likely never go to Tartine again for these reasons:
-We went on a Saturday morning and ordered, waited for 20 minutes. My friend got his order, a salad, first, and my order, the hashbrown pie came 20 minutes after. Why they couldn't wait to bring out the salad at the same time as the hot order is beyond me
-My friend's $10 mango salad was terrible. Not much mango, the mango was not ripe, the salad dressing was oily
-My order came with a baguette instead of wheat bread. When we pointed this out, the woman who delivered the food went back in, came back out, and said the gal at the register who took the order wrote down "baguette," and then asked "she always writes down what she hears. Five minutes earlier, the people at the table next to us got bacon instead of sausage. So we talked to them for a while about how the gal at the register may need to adjust her hearing
-Halfway into eating, the gal from the register came out with a plate of wheat bread. She said "here's your wheat bread" and then I said "Thank you. Can I get some butter." She looked at me and pointed to the area where the waitstaff keeps condiments and said "It's over there." I was stunned! The people next to us were in shock as well. I just said "I didn't realize we were supposed to get our own." Then the gal stomped over, got two things of butter and gave them to me. (I had to walk over there later to get some jam.)
This all was unacceptable. Previous times the food was better (the bacon wasn't soggy/undercooked) and the salads were fresher, they got our orders right, they asked if we needed anything and they brought us everything we needed, like jam and butter. (They also even brought treats for our dog.) We also heard other customers around us who were annoyed at the wait time and service. Maybe they had an off day, but two rude employees and bad food means we won't be going there anytime soon. -
Review from Greg G.
I used to live down here and love going to the theater. This is actually a great spot to stop before hand with whomever you are seeing a movie with and just have a quick sweet snack. They have all sorts of little chocolate treats like bombas, chocolate covered strawberries, molded chocolate confections. They have non chocolate treats too like fruit tarts, croissants and normal cafe food stuffs. Their hot cocoa is ok and their coffee is so so as well.
It gets a little packed in here at times but usually you can find seating for like 3-4 people no problem. Sad thing is that the theater has become the place for high school peeps to hang out so they all seem to trickle in here at times. So you might have to overhear the gossip of who is not who's best friend anymore while you wait for your order.
Overall a still a good spot in the area. -

It's very refreshing to see a cafe that opens til late in downtown RWC :) The location is perfect to grab a before or after movie sweets and there are so many delicious looking desserts and pastries to choose from.
My bf bought me the chocolate eclair and apple turnover once. The eclair was ok, not too sweet but lacked the buttery richness on the pastry. The apple turnover could use some extra apple chunks inside..a bit too much dough and not enough fillings.
Last night we shared the tiramisu. It was so beautiful and somewhat a chocolate lover heaven with the chocolate layer surrounding the tiramisu. The tiramisu itself needs extra rum to make it taste like a real tiramisu.
It's nice that they have an outdoor sitting area, it's great for summer nights. -

Atmosphere -Upscale interior that is always clean and a front patio with plenty of seating.
Coffee -Great
Desserts - Great
Breakfast - poor. We've been twice and will wait a while before returning. While they have the ingredient roster for a potentially great offering, our meals have fallen disappointingly short on the delivery. We ordered an omelet and was served your basic overdone egg flat folded over poorly distributed ingredients that were not cooked or warm. Side of hash browns. All served lukewarm to cold. Quiche was warmer with a not so flaky crust, lots of onions and too much oregano to make another poorly balanced concoction. This is consistent with our last breakfast here so it seems they need to train the breakfast cook or get a new one.
We've had a full range of experience with the service, mostly good and one bad egg with an attitude problem. -

Surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet. I go here all the time either with friends for lunch or walk here with my husband after dinner for coffee and a pastry. It's a reliable place to eat, salads, sandwiches, sweet treats plus they serve beer and wine. You order your food and then they bring it to you but not waiter service.
There is tons of seating both inside and out, and prices are reasonable. It's very European. -

Perfect place to stop for dinner after a Saturday afternoon walk. I ordered the special tri tip salad and unfortunate that was not that good as it was saggy. The worst part was that my credit card was charged twice and when I called the person who answer did not apologize and made it seem like it was a normal thing. She just said that one of the charges was going to go away in a few days! I found that unacceptable...

This place ROCKS with mediocrity! It's so awesomely mediocre, I can't do it justice with one of my descriptions.
But I'll try anyway!
- Baked goods are so-so; reasonably priced but nothing tastes amazing
- Hot and cold drinks are also so-so; the coffee isn't anything to come back for and like my partner in crime said, most of them look prettier than they taste... (another +1 for team mediocrity)
- Service is also meh! Employees aren't mean! Or friendly! Or happy! I mean, I don't know whether to be content that they aren't bad or discontent that they aren't better.
- Lots of seating, which is in real life, an awesome thing
- Great ambiance: well-lit for studying or lite gossip; artwork by locals on the wall (I dig it); well-decorated too (not cheesy or dirty like some cafes)
- Nice outdoor seating: it's too bad the weather never seems warm enough to enjoy it but I know it'll be great when NorCal has "summer" weather
- Large, clean bathroom (that is money)
I think people just like this place because it's cute and serves pastries and caffeine. On those things alone, this place meets the minimum but that is about it. Also, parking is cool too. -

This is an attractive cafe but WATCH OUT FOR THE MEAN AND AGGRESSIVE COMPUTER NERDS!!
While seated at a table with family, a young guy tried to take our chairs and table away so that he could sit near an outlet for his computer. He finally sat nearby and gave us the "stink eye" for the rest of the meal. Creepy!
We ordered a full meal, but when we looked around most of the tables were taken up by people camping out with a laptop and a cup of coffee. These folks acted like they owned the place. It's too bad because the food is very good.
Pros:
Clam chowder
Ham sandwich on baguette
Chicken and artichoke pannini
Cream Puffs and Chocolate Eclairs
Nice location
Cons:
Obnoxious people on computers!
Staff was not very friendly

4-stars for very nice ambiance and being open late(ish).
Cute, nice hang-out place especially after a movie. But as a couple of others have said, the pastries are for gawking only - they really are more beautiful than flavorful. We tried a bread-pudding and a pear pastry thingy - both looked *amazing* but everyone in the group found them kind of bland.... we didn't even finish them between the 5 of us.... oh well, next time we'll just stick to hot drinks for post-movie / pre-caltrain hangouts. -

I've been to this place a handful of times, but I've had very few things on their menu. So keep in mind, this review isn't based on a whole lot. Still, I think this place has great potential.
I've had their vegetarian sandwich three times. The first time it blew me away. The second time it seemed to be of much poorer quality and let me down a bit. The third time it was back to being pretty tasty again. So, although consistency isn't that great, it's still a pretty decent sandwich (eggplant, roasted red pepper, melted cheese, etc.). Last night I enjoyed the half sandwhich/soup combo (and a great price at around $7). The roasted red pepper soup was really delicious, but I wish they would have brought it out at the same time as my sandwich. If I'm ordering it as a combo, I want them together, as opposed to ordering a starter soup and then a main dish. Is this not obvious?
I've always been tempted by their yummy looking desserts but so far have only been able to try a couple of their cookies which were both delicious (chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin with some kind of lemony frosting glaze on it). -

Looking for an iced mocha on my return trip from San Francisco to San Jose, I stopped in at Cafe La Tartine. I very much liked the appearance of the cafe, with lots of outdoor seating and many tables inside.
The pastry window case will make anybody drool with its selection. Read a newspaper, chat with friends, whatever the reason, just go and get a pastry!
My iced mocha was tasty with a good chocolate-y flavor, and gave me a good caffeine burst for the day. Seating was very comfortable inside, so I'll be back for more! -

I used to work across the street at the now closed Beard Papa. I remember the betrayal I felt when I saw a cream puff in Cafe La Tartine's bakery display. I promised myself I would never go against my job and fall for another cream puff besides BP's (but I later broke this promise when I tried Satura Cakes).
Anyways La Tartine offers coffee, blended drinks, bakery items, and food. I have had a few of their breakfast dishes and sandwiches before but have learned to stay away from them because they are mediocre. Don't buy into the cheese and fruit plate. It's hardly a plate of food, and there are only two varieties of fruit.
The lemon bars and banana tarts are safe bets. Their coffee drinks are disappointing. They carry tea forte if you're into tea.
This place is a nice hangout spot in downtown Redwood City. But as far as food and drinks go you can probably get something better somewhere else!
