The little cafe is magnificent! The food, the drinks! The orange juice with not-so subtle hint of fresh flowers!  The sandwiches, so simple yet delicious! The moment you walk through the doors, you feel as you are in a small cafe in Paris, seeking out a quiet place to ponder the beauty of life over coffee. This was as close to an authentic Parisian cafe experience has you will find in Philadelphia! The owners are very kind. I love their little dog as well. And they have wi-fi! I'll be coming here on my lunch break so I can pretend I'm vacationing in France before being jolted back to reality. Thank you, Cafe La Maude for saving me hundreds of dollars on airfare and 7 hours of travel.

Special thanks to Google for translating my review, as I don't speak a word of French. =)

Strong, balanced machiattos for me ... smooth, silky decaf latte for the wife.  I was going to try a cappuccino, but they serve them in larger mugs than I prefer.  Rather than risk that the espresso would get lost in the milk (see my La Colombe review), I went for a double machiatto instead.  We didn't get any food here but the menu/pastries looked good.  Loved the European vibe and decor.

I'd absolutely recommend getting your morning espresso fix here (instead of getting regular coffee at Honey's a few doors down).

This place fuels my not so secret desire to be French.

I love to come here on a quiet weekend morning before the brunch crowd comes in. The woman who is often there might be the owner but she has a sweet accent and an even sweeter disposition. The food is to die for. I can't pronounce it, but if you get the thing that starts with "l'oeuf" then you're good to go. It's a delicious sandwich of ham, cheese, egg, arugula, and tomato on a fresh delicious baguette. It doesn't get any better.

I love sitting in the window with my boyfriend and sipping coffee. This is a great neighborhood place and it seems like most of the people who stop in are regulars or live in the neighborhood. Feels like it really is a community hub and I like places like that.

    J'aime le Cafe la Maude!

Ok. I really wanted to know what went wrong because of all the 5 star reviews for this place.
My friends and I decided to go there for coffee before school to try something different since we've always passed by the place and never really went it.
My God, I regret everything. The owners were extremely rude and inappropriate. One actually had the nerve to tell us this "was not Starbucks, ladies." when we simply asked a question about the coffee. While we continued to order, their snarky and sarcastic attitudes pretty much ruined my morning.
I will never go back to this place. Which is too bad, because the cappuccino was pretty good.
These people seriously need an attitude check!

This is by far THE best cafe' in NoLibs. It is quiet, has an amazingly classy yet relaxing decor, and food that has never ceased to amaze in taste, quality, and clever combinations. The owners and servers/baristas are so nice. The owner even remembered me after I had not been there for a while. She even remembered what I do for a living. Everything is great here but if you get something, get it with the arugula. Whatever they dress it with is amazing. Enjoy and go often. Just remember to bring cash...

Hands down my favorite place to get breakfast in Philadelphia.

If you are well-traveled (or just wish you were), you'll appreciate the authenticity of the French-Lebanese breakfast and brunch offerings.

Having the option of really good French Toast, a fantastic sandwich on a fresh baguette *or* an egg and Fuul platter (think good hummus and pico de gallo with egg on top) is unique to this cafe.

Their bread and pastries are fresh and delicious. You are as readily able to get a good espresso and a bagel as you are to leave with a sampling of baklava and date cookies.

The menu does not overreach, but what they do they do extraordinarily well. And if you are a fan of strong coffee and espresso drinks, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone in the city that does it any better than their talented baristas. The decor is minimal and classy, the conversation is vibrant and the food is prompt, fresh, and made-to-order.

If you like good people, elegant interiors, strong coffee and are willing to spend $7-9 on a brunch dish, this place deserves a visit.

This was an exceptional find. If honey's has no place for you to sit n eat- then this is your spot.  Bread and pastry fresh, light, and delicious. Breakfasts savory and sweet, with enough well priced choice to win over any palatte. Plus, the big salad!

This is a wonderful place for a quick coffee/espresso stop, to do work, to get a pastry with a friend, or to have breakfast. This is, hands-down, my favorite place to get breakfast in the city. Why? Because this place has real, healthy, wonderful foods that are carefully prepared and quality ingredients. You feel invigorated after eating here, like you just did a favor for your body. The owner is a masterful cook - and if you ask for anything special in preparations (no salt, etc..) she is careful to give you exactly what you want. They have a menu of a limited number of things, and they do them all perfectly. There is a lot of care and pride in the food, and I just love that.

This place is beautifully  appointed, and I would take a client here any day, but it's not 'formal.' The owners are wonderful, effusive, fantastic people  people. After speaking with them at length one day, they offered us a couple of date cookies to try - which I have never had before. They were amazing and homemade.

I don't want everyone crowding my spot, but let me tell you, you will not be sorry if you come here.

Interesting take on foul, but not exactly what I had in mind. Still, it all tasted good and the cafe mocha was good. Everything seemed in order. I heard that this place was good and that was on point. Feels like Beirut or somewhere in the Levant without the corresponding people (which is unfortunate since the people make the place). I think this place might rate higher but I have to go again to say "I'm a fan."

I absolutely love Cafe La Maude!  Their food is very fresh and consistently delicious, definately the best coffee shop food I have ever had!  The owners are very sweet and will chat with you if you are hanging out in here.  Their WiFi is always working and there are plenty of plugs for your laptop.  Also their coffee is fantastic.  I really can't say enough good things about this place.  So happy I finally found a coffee shop where you can get a fresh and reasonably priced meal that goes beyond bagels or totally weird food combos (ahem one shot).  Please patronize this business!  AND they are dog friendly!!!

Serves the strongest coffee I've ever had. They also offer sandwiches and salads so lunch is a good option too. Homemade baklava is to die for! Decor is very chic and the free, STABLE wi-fi is a major plus. Owners are nice too.

Prices are a little high so coming here is a once-in-a-blue-moon treat to myself. Also, they usually close around 4 or 5 so by then I can't get my late afternoon latte.

Overall, out of the plethora of coffee shops in Northern Liberties, Cafe La Maude is a welcomed addition to the area.

Coffee was fine.  I ordered a bagel to go. My friends who've entered this cafe know the atmosphere is far from cheap, hence I would expect the bread to be buttered for such a pretty price tag for a sm cup of jo & bagel to go.

Any shop that charges me more than a $1.50 for bagel with cream cheese and gives me wimpy plastic knife with a small Philadelphia Cream Cheese souffle cup is over-priced, cutting corners, and simply asking me never to return.

I now wonder, should I have sat down to have the bagel, if they would have given me the same tub of Philly's CC with a regular knife on a plate. I would be surprised if they did not. In any event, this place is off my list of stop-ins to answer that question.

I stumbled upon Cafe La Maude via an internet deal from my favorite website. As a Francophile in training I begged my boyfriend to come with me but French food is not his thing so I was accompanied by one of my dear friends.
We arrived around 12 noon on a Sunday the place is very small but in a homey quaint way. There weren't any available tables so the young lady behind the "bar" requested that a group of girls snuggle a little closer together so that we could sit down and enjoy our food

I ordered the Blanc de L'oeuf au Poivron Grille- it was very good. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the ingredients worked very well together. It was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had. And a steal at 7.50 I couldn't even eat the whole thing though I tried.

My friend the build your own omelet that came with a side green salad (very French) and baguette.  She said it was very good as well.

Our coffee and fresh squeezed juices were great compliments to our delicious breakfast.

Another reader posted honeys was better. I guess its all in what you like. I think this charming place deserves 5 stars and that's what I gave them.

Cafe La Maude makes me very nostalgic for my European travels.  This cafe will immediately transport you to some quaint yet chic cafe in Paree.  So authentic you'll forget that cheesesteaks are sold in the same city.

I absolutely love the decor.  Classy and sophisticated.

The cafe au lait was great...and didn't make my stomach hurt :-) ( like most coffee drinks)

But the icing on the cake was the homemade baklava--Sweet, Buttery, Succulent.

The owners are very sweet and welcoming too.  I hope Cafe La Maude is here to stay.  Luv this place!

Oh!  And there's Dependable Free Wi-Fi.  Nice!

I have been to Paris (sweet brag, yo), but I don't speak French. I can say 'vin chaud' and know what I'm in store for, though.

This place looks like it was taken from Neuilly and placed in my very own American neighborhood. It is precious. The food is incredible.

The problem--well, MY problem, is that the menu is in French. Not the descriptions, but the names of the dishes. I barely know how to pronounce these things so I ordered "the banana stuffed brioche french toast" instead of its proper, given name. This is slightly intimidating to a lowly 'merican like myself, but that won't stop me from coming back.

The coffee is excellent; the sandwiches are delicious with a combination of ingredients for every whim; and the pastries are just barely sweet enough, perfect.

But what really gets me is the feel. Clean, elegant, with a wide open front (for those gorgeous days!), and a quiet mix of jazz classics and lesser-known serenades. They avoid the vaguely pretentious "minimalist" decor movement in favor of understated but incredibly classy: a few key accents of just the right flare.

Plus lovely service and secured wifi. I've found my new favorite cafe!

French-Lebanese cafe with an elegant vibe. A perfectly suitable brunch alternative to Honey's, which is just a couple doors down, and with a much shorter wait (if any).

We came here for brunch in the early afternoon and ordered the Foul Moudamas, a plate of two scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and hummus topped with fava beans. It comes with very light, fresh-baked pita. It was very tasty-- I'd say the hummus was the star of the plate.

I've heard the pastries are baked off-site by a former Le Bec Fin pastry chef.  We tried a brioche bun, which was quite delicious, although it wasn't as fresh-tasting as we would have hoped... perhaps if we had come in the morning it would have been better.

The ambiance is exquisite, from the arabesque-designed cups to the embroidered seats. And all the servers were very friendly and helpful, and the owners came around to chat with customers and make sure everything was going well.

Great eating experience-- perhaps (for now) one of the best kept secrets of NoLibs 4th Street.

You know how every foodie has that one restaurant that finally spurred them to sign up for a Yelp account?

    Cafe La Maude is mine.

Simply put, I love this place and the warm, wonderful folks who run it. Every time I stop in for a sandwich (I recommend the Atlantique - now called something different - with tuna, tomato, olive tapenade, hardboiled egg, pickles, lettuce, potato), I stay for half the afternoon chatting with the proprietoress.

Because she's so wonderful and low-key, I'm going to have to tell you a few of the things that Cafe La Maude doesn't advertise (but should!)

    - Yes, their coffees are great (best macchiato outside of Italy), but their food is better. They serve breakfast (opens at 6am, I think) and lunch till 6pm
    - They order fresh, organic food delivered daily
    - Everything is made fresh each morning
    - They do catering

I've been in NoLibs for some time and can appreciate the value of Honey's. But, for my money, I prefer Honey's for dinner (same menu, no wait!) and La Maude for brunch (and lunch).

This place is cute and slightly pretentious.  Just like how I like my women.  Except for the pretentious part.  Everything about this place--the black-and-white floral decor, the chalk-board menu written in French, the delicious roasted coffee, and even the bathroom--made me feel like I was in Paris at a true French cafe. It was definitely a nice cafe, with free wifi, tasty looking sandwiches, and delicious pastries.  It's a place to take friends who are visiting from outta town, but definitely not the kind of place I would go to set up shop and study all day.  It's just not comfortable man.

That's pretty much all I have to say.

Wow!!  If you have not had a chance to try Cafe La Maude, bot are you missing out.  I live in NYC and make it a point to stop in every visit to Philadelphia for either just a perfectly frothy cappuccino or if I have time to sit down and enjoy one of the delicious  treats on the menu.

The space and staff are warm and welcoming.  Everything from the fresh and flaky croissants to the salads and the Lebanese Platter is so fresh, tasty and healthy I can't help order seconds.  This is a great place to go with a group for brunch and share a few platters so you get a chance to taste everything.

Can't wait to come back during my next visit and enjoy a cup of Cafe La Maude's delicious La Columbe coffee.

I've never left a Yelp review but felt compelled to do so after having lunch at Café La Maude yesterday.  I'm from New Jersey through and through and have never felt any sort of fraternity with the city of Philadelphia, but I'll be moving down for a job soon so I went to check out the Northern Liberties neighborhood with a friend.  We parked on N. 4th purely having seen that there was some eatery to satiate our hunger and perused the menu outside here and the wait at Honey's next-door.  Though I was slightly off-put by all the French on the menu, we stopped in because we felt the prices and non-existent wait could not be beat.  Great decision!

I asked for the vegetarian baguette without ricotta (as an intending vegan and twelve year vegetarian) and was met with insistence from behind the counter that it be substituted with hummus or it wouldn't "be right." Agreed.  The sandwich was great.  My friend had one of the chicken baguettes, which was also reviewed as nothing less than stellar.  He may have even said it was "one of the best sandwiches (he's) ever eaten."

We didn't have cash on hand (cash only, no cards) so the staff advised us that we could go to the ATM at Honey's while our food was being prepared, which I viewed as thoughtful seeing as how we could have just walked away or gone to Honey's for lunch instead.  The beverages were even authentic European, upon which one precocious six-year-old co-diner remarked (maybe she only just remarked on the size and shape of the bottles, but you have to admit she was observant).  There are certainly no 32 ounce fountain sodas in here.

On our way out we ended up in a conversation with a couple whom I believe to be the proprietors.  We engaged in a conversation regarding the presumed expertise of my lunch partner and myself - immigration law - but also discussed my impending move to Philadelphia.  They were so forthcoming with tips and caveats on the neighborhood one of them actually got on the phone to call a friend regarding an open apartment.

The café itself is immaculate from the tables (indoor and outdoor seating) to the bathrooms downstairs.  The food was great and the staff was more than friendly, proving all the platitudes about the City of Brotherly Love.  I will definitely be back.

As a long time Northern Liberties resident I am thrilled that this intimate little bistro opened within walking distance of my house. Latte Lounge, the owner-operated coffee shop that used to occupy the space was down-home beautiful, a place where neighbors would meet and greet and live jazz performances were sometimes held. It had a lot of soul, which helped me overlook just how run down it was.  When it closed a few years ago after a nearly 10 year run, I and the fam were disappointed. It wasn't perfect, but it was a place to grab a coffee, gab with the owner and a neighbor or two, and maybe read to my little girl from the generous collection of donated childrens' books.  But Cafe Maude not only brought back the sense of family that we missed, they brought a level of excellence and professionalism to the business that is very much a rarity in these parts. The space was completely gutted, the basement excavated, and a sophisticated Parisian-modern establishment cleverly shoe-horned into a modest row-home ground floor. A spectacular transformation. The owners had a lot of input in the design, but utilized a professional designer (Robin Stellwagen) to guide the planning and design process. This was a wise move, and shows in the attention to the layout, use of materials and simple but important details, like the cleanable surface on the condiment counter. As a hospitality designer I may be biased, but I have seen so many costly mistakes on DIY projects that It has become a pet peeve of mine.

In spite of the few negative reviews about service on this blog, which I am really surprised to read, I would say that Cafe Maude's service is their strong suit. Quick and professional, and completely attentive to the customer. Very little if any barista sidetalk going on here. It is all about the customer enjoying their experience, whether it is a delicious latte with a French pastry, or a fresh omelette and salad. But I DO have to agree with a few negative reviewers who were upset with the service packs of butter and cream cheese offered. Nothing says inauthentic more than this. Take a second to apply the condiment and know your customer's preference (schmear? loaded? touch of butter?) and you will have won over your customer. I hope the owners toss out the service pack concept, which is especially jarring given how wonderful the place is otherwise.

I appreciate that Cafe Maude has a depth of staff including a charming bus person to bring food up from the kitchen and clear tables, although the owner is just as likely to do this. It also helps that they usually have more than one person behind the counter when it gets busy; a register person AND a barista.

My colleague Zaid who is from the Middle East, loves this place and finds the dishes delicious and authentic. He not only enjoyed his lunch, but got to speak his native Arabic with the charming owner, Natalie. The design is clean and tasteful, and I am especially impressed with the a la carte kitchen and Parisian style bathroom they have carved out of the basement. Clearly the owners take great pride in their establishment and have invested a great deal of treasure in the building AND the business. Well worth a visit and a "Best of" list.

Just stopped in for a coffee before brunch at Honeys. Despite having a group of 7 drinking coffee and lattes, we got kicked out because we did not order food. The staff was extremely rude and blatantly disrespectful during the whole encounter. Absolutely no way I would ever come back. Shocking behavior for anybody in the service industry. If you want everyone to eat, be a restaurant and not a coffee shop.

Do you guys know how hard it is to find good cappuccinos in this town?  If you do, I suggest coming by Cafe La Maude.  I stopped in here during the 60 minute wait at Honey's that is, I guess, essential to the Honey's dining experience?  Anyway, I asked for a cappuccino and the barista made me a latte.  She apologized profusely and kept offering to remake the drink, but I accepted it because I love both.  Holy Moses!  It was amazing.  Free of bitterness yet strong.  Boyfriend face got a delicious mocha.  We told our two brunch companions to stop by and they also loved their drinks.

The cafe is lovely.  In addition to coffee, they also serve sandwiches.  I've heard rumors of pastry but saw none while I was there.  I will definitely stop by for further investigation.

For years I was super loyal to another local NoLibs coffee shop and when Cafe La Maude opened I thought "Great, another coffee house. Exactly what we don't need." With three other established options in the neighborhood I assumed this place would be closed after six months. However, once I got a look inside I decided it was just too cute not to try it out, and let me tell you, they have totally won me over.

The decor is adorable, the iced coffee is super strong but lacks bitterness, the croissants are excellent, the service always so friendly, and I highly recommend the Haloumi Press sandwich.

The only downside is they do not accept cards, and I almost never have cash on me. But that just means that when I have cash, I go to La Maude, and when I don't it's an excuse to patronize my old standard, which alleviates feelings of guilt knowing that I haven't completely abandoned them.

I came here for a cup of coffee while waiting for seats to the restaurant next door. The cafe was super clean and cute. They have a selection of pastries and espresso drinks. They're prices were average/comparable to Starbucks. I bought a small vanilla nonfat latte for $4. I wished they offered a sugar-free syrup since I'm on a diet but I went with it. It was a small cup and the temperature was just right. I think if I were meeting friends for coffee this would be a great place. It's pretty small location but still fairly cute decor.  Only cash accepted.

this place reminds me of a typical european coffee shop.

it's also the boldest cup of coffee i ever had in my life.  it was still very strong and not the least bit watered down with half the ice melted in my iced coffee.
the pastries are pricey, but a worth it for an occasional treat.  the croissants are buttery and flaky.  just the right amount of chocolate in the chocolate croissants and subtle almond flavor in the almond one.  the fruit pasties are not overly sugary gelatinous fillings, but half of a whole fruit with just a bit of sugar.

Great new spot in N. Libs. The food here is amazing. They make some of the best sandwiches in Northern Liberties (if not Philadelphia).  The decor / atmosphere really isn't my style but they make up for it in their delicious lunch menu and pastries. The coffee is pretty decent too. It's La Colombe so nothing special but they rival just about any other coffee shop in Philadelphia. The owners and people who work there are all super nice too. I always get a friendly hello and have an enjoyable conversation. Worth a Saturday morning /afternoon detour.

So, it has been a long time coming.  Philadelphia has finally acquired something different.  Where else can you go for a cozy, French bistro atmosphere and get to enjoy amazing coffee, yummy pastries and munch of Middle Eastern delights?  Nowhere, except for Cafe La Maude.  I am obsessed with their lattes and cheese danishes, but my absolute favorites are their traditional Lebanese platters.  They are so healthy and tasty that I find myself frequenting this little coffee shop every weekend and even a few days a week.  I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone that loves great food and knows their coffee!!!

I have never left a Yelp review for anything but I couldn't help myself. I am a true believer that word of mouth is the most efficient way to get a business attention and I hope that I can help, especially because Cafe La Maude is by far the best cafe I have encountered in years!
Initially, I only got coffee here. I started safe with an iced coffee, which anywhere else, is usually either too light or so strong that I can't handle how bitter it is. This coffee was PERFECT! SUPER strong yet not bitter AT ALL! I was thrilled considering how hung over I had been from the night before. After one sip, I was back to life again. From that moment on, I was hooked!
I moved on to a cafe mocha, cappuccino and latte. ALL AMAZING! One day, I decided to try out the food. WHAT WAS I WAITING FOR??? By far the most amazing chicken sandwich I have ever had. I also tried a bunch of menu items that were out of my element (I think one is called foul?). The flavors were fantastic and the food was well prepared and fresh. Very different from anything else you can find in the area.
The icing on the cake is the atmosphere. The decor is swanky and classy yet not snooty. No one made me feel weird for coming in in my ripped up jeans and t-shirt. Instead, I was greeted and felt so welcomed by everyone inside. It was a little European cafe hidden in nolibs. The owner is such an amazing person. It makes me want to come back as often as possible.
I love this place and would definitely recommend going out of your way to make sure to try it out. It's like nothing else you can find in the city. Unique and absolutely delicious! Seriously go!

I love Cafe La Maude!  So far, I've been there 4 times, twice just for coffee and croissants, and twice to sit down and eat some lunch.  Each time, it's been better than I expected.  Their coffee drinks are delicious!  I tried the iced caramel glace - perfect on a hot morning!  And the croissants.....delicious!  They are some serious French pastries!  The "regular" food is great too.  Paninis are on crisp fresh bread and the Mediterranean platter is sooo yummy!  It's perfect for one or even two people to share.  The decor is sooo cute, it makes you feel like you are in Europe and the service is done with a smile.  I will definitely go back.  FYI - for now they only take cash!
