Kushco is a great place to stop by for frozen yogurt.
You can pick vanilla or tofu (I think) as a yogurt base and then pick out as many toppings as you want. They mix up everything for you and place it in a lidded container because it's almost impossible to finish it in one sitting. They have any topping you can think of. I always get cheesecake and oreo.
I got food here a couple times. A while ago I enjoyed it but most recently I got a falafel rollup. They microwaved the falafel which is already a thumbs down from me. I get that it's a small place that serves food pretty fast but microwaving falafel is a big no no! I'm pretty sure Kushco is under new management now so this could be why their food isn't as good.
Stick to going here for dessert. That's it. -

Positives:
1. This place offers vegan icecream.
2. They offer a couple of vegan wraps.
3. Wait time on food is short.
4. Staff is always friendly.
5. Nice place to take your friends late at night because they offer a lot of different sandwich/wrap options. Open Mon-Sun till 11PM!
Negatives:
1. NO WEBSITE. The only way I'll be able to look at their menu is if I remember to pick one up and keep it lying around your house.
Since the wraps are identified by a letter and a couple of numbers, it makes it impossible to recall whether my wrap was the H51 or H15. Just call the wrap a falafel wrap if you aren't going to put a menu online, please.
2. Vegan Tofu icecream. Yes I know I said it was a positive, but this tofu icecream has to be the most processed crap you can buy. Being a vegan that chooses to eat for the health benefits I couldn't eat this stuff more than twice a year. I think they should offer a healthier icecream option like coconut/almond icecream.
3. Very few vegan options even though they advertise vegan friendly. -

Salem, MA
i live in downtown Salem and I'm a customer here not just because it's convenient but because the food is typically pretty awesome.
I'm a really picky eater, so my go-to is either a chicken-parm calzone OR, a wrap with rice, chicken and teriyaki sauce, sometimes bacon. Their Lemon-Chix rice is OMGTHANKSFORBURNINGMYTONGUEYOUARESOGOOD. really. it's awesome.
I do think it seems pricey but i also think it seems pricier than normal when I'm broken and really wanting aforementioned soup and can't afford it.
I called to place an order recently and the guy who answered legit grunted his hello and then hung up on me without a sign off once i was done placing the order. That's the only time i've been a little like, "hmmm...that was kind of....rude...." but otherwise, the staff is typically nice. There's this one kid who's SUPER nice and makes conversation and all that great customer service shit.
In any case, their soup is awesome. their portions are definitely huge like, enough to have 1/2 a wrap for dinner and the other half for lunch and their location is awesome. -

I truuuuuuly love this little place. Perfect for a nice lunch! I ALWAYS get the HS9; turkey, coleslaw, swiss, with a delicious russian dipping sauce on a crunchy ciabatta bread or was it focaccia bread? (It does not have any herbs so Im pretty positive it was ciabatta) regardless, DELICIOUS, might I add HUGE, very filling. Been there with new owner and previous owner, safe to say nothing has changed except the decor and set up of the cafe itself. Always fresh and flavorful. Im not vegan by any means but they have plenty of vegan options including icecream (YUM) Would order in and take out everyday if only I lived closer. Recommend!

We're new to Salem & this has been the only place we've found so far with vegan ice cream (PB & cinnamon combo. Trust me.)...the servings are huge & the price reasonable. Staff is friendly enough, but if you're looking for spectacular service, this wouldn't be the place. Wish it were a little more vegan friendly!

When I first moved to Salem, the bf and I would go often. I loved the smoked salmon sandwich, the eggplant and pesto sandwich and the tuna melt.
However, since they changed ownership, they adjusted the menu, and got rid of my favorite sandwich. I started getting the eggplant one more often instead, but the quality of the eggplant is not that good. Last time it was cold and the breading tasted too oily.
Considering eating here (sandwich and drink) is over $10 a person, I pretty much stopped going. There are better places to eat in Salem.
Disclaimer, I have never tried their froyo. Maybe that redeems the quality of the other food. -

2.5 star review, in my mind.
Looking at their menu on facebook...
There are only two pita roll-ups, from the entire menu, that are vegan (?) and if you are going to claim a vegan-friendly menu then you have to offer more than one or two incidental dishes. Even more so, you need to mark the items on your menu as vegan, so that I know you're making sure that it is.
Again, they claim to have gluten-free options but nothing is marked gluten-free and as far as I can tell, the only gluten-free items on their menu are salads. Whoopdeedoo, you and every other restaurant.
Once in a while, if I'm desperate and sweaty, I'll get some tofu fro-yo with mix-ins. But, boy, is it ever bland. I think they just throw frozen tofu with some sugar in a blender. -

This place blows since the ownership changed. Like many others, I miss the old owners. Kushco was an all-time favorite spot of mine for years (kept me well fed upon first moving to Salem), not so much anymore.

The sandwiches are fantastic - I love the chicken bacon ranch on foccacia and the meatball sub for sure! They also have a phenomenal strawberry limeade, and my personal favorite part - frozen yogurt that they will also DELIVER! Heaven!

I love this place. I have been coming here since I was in college and I always get the same thing - the chicken teriyaki (formerly 18E, I don't know what the new number is). I know they sold the place about a year ago and I miss the old owners. Yeah, the husband was kind of a jerk but you just expected it from him. The wife was a sweetheart. The new owners are okay, just not as friendly.
Also, the pizza is pretty good, the avocado and brie wrap, and the Boston College. Don't forget to try a frozen yogurt :) -

I don't understand some of the low ratings here.
Best Chicken Salad sandwich. hands down. goodnight, end of story. You think you got a better one? your crazy. just crazy.
I shopped around the menu for a couple years before stumbling on this perfection. I haven't been disappointed at all here.
Man, I think I'm going to go get another one right after I finish this review. -

Hands down, the worst falafel I've ever had. And not even by a little! This stuff truly sucks.
I visited this small, run-down restaurant last Saturday. In addition to paninis, melts, pizzas, calzones, salads, and cold sandwiches, the menu runs a ridiculously large gamut of cuisines in the form of various wraps: Chicken Parm to Middle Eastern to Beef Teriyaki. Now, back to the heinous falafel!:
First off, the wrap was slathered in - literally - about 3/4 of an entire container of hummus. You could not take a single bite without getting hummus squeezins all over your face and hands; it was disgusting and unnecessary. The wrap was fully half Romaine lettuce which was old and thready. There was a little tomato, some shredded carrot, cucumber, as well as the green pepper I asked them to leave off.
Now, by this time I know you're intrigued about the actual falafel part. Yes, well, I've saved it for last because there was so freaking little of it - but looking back maybe that was a blessing. I don't know when this stuff was made/fried/whatever but it was NOT freshly made. It was cold, extremely hard, flattened, and dry as cardboard. There were exactly TWO falafel balls on my entire twelve inch wrap; one on each side, torn into halves and positioned down the length of the wrap. The consistency was just so thoroughly desiccated that this didn't taste anything like falafel. It didn't look a whole lot like it either: instead of the crispy-coated sphere of creamy beige goodness it was a small, hard, flat, dried-out cow patty that was actually green inside.
I asked for potato salad but they were out. I then asked for cole slaw and they took my money for it but it never actually materialized. Luckily I remembered to ask for my money back on the way out.
My boyfriend had an average turkey club sandwich but reported that it was unfortunately drowning in a very thin, very mayonaissy Russian dressing.
I would never go back to this place again.
Update 05/28/08: The reviewer "hegi i." obviously owns or works for this business, or has friends who do. No matter how nice the people are who run this place, the sandwiches are awful and the service is non-existent. Rather than posting a fake review, these owners/managers should pay attention to the feedback here to improve what's wrong. -

Cafe Kucshco is one of those places you tend to love or Hate. They offer Mediterranian style food. For a takeout/sitdown place they offer a nice atmosphere.
I honestly wish I liked it more here, the people are really nice. I just don't think their food is that good. However I do know some people who absolutely love it.
They do have one sandwich I love. It's grilled chicken, spinach, and tomatoes on grilled bread. I think this is called the HS1 or HS2? In any case it is delicious, but does not makeup for the other things I've tried here.
It is hard for me to give Cafe Kuscho a bad rating because the people there are really really nice. The atmosphere is very much that of a local business started by ethnic people who know a thing or two about food.
Unfortunately just don't think their food is worth the price. For example: A chicken Caesar wrap and a drink costs about $10 total. This is ridiculously expensive.
While the people their are very kind, the time it takes them to prepare your food is not what you'd expect from a place like this. The delivery tends to be really slow. They really need to hire more people here.
Cafe Kucho's best item is their frozen yogurt, which you cannot really differentiate from ice cream. There are LOADS of toppings to choose from and considering that it's better for you than ice cream it's well worth the price, which is about the same as you'd pay for a medium ice cream cone.
It's worth trying, but definitely not the best food around here. Cafe Vesuvius in Marblehead has similar food that is higher quality and at a much better price. -

So, it's October in Salem and you've only got 2 people working at night...at prime eating time. F*cking ridiculous.
We waited 20 MINUTES for a cup of ice cream....nothing had to be cut or cooked. Ice cream. 20 minutes.
You get 2 stars because you're the only place that offers tofu ice cream for my boyfriend. Otherwise this place sucks.
Also...no french fries?? You sell sandwiches up the wazoo and no french fries. -

I've only had takeout here so I wont comment on the inside.
If I did, then it would probably knock off a star or two.
As some have said, the service could use a little help but for me,
as long as you keep it short with a call, a thank you at pickup and a goodbye
it's not an unpleasant experience.
Now the good stuff: the food is pretty friggin amazing! They have gigantic sizes for everything they serve which makes the prices reasonable. Ingredients are always fresh, everything is really customizable & the standard sandwiches & wraps are awesome. I usually go with the salads & the hot wraps. Awesome falafel if you're into that kind of thing :) -

Salem, MA
Cafe Kuscho offers some of the best food in downtown Salem, in my opinion. Somewhere in between a decent pizza place and Salem's Tavern on the Green.
The menu is extensive and you can customize anything. For lunch and dinner they have hot and cold wraps, sandwiches & salads, as well as hot grilled sandwiches, pizza, calzones, and soup.
For dessert they have an assortment of things including candy bars, cookies, brownies, assorted cheesecakes, carrot & coffee cake, as well as frozen yogurt that has about 50 different customizable flavor options.
If you want to just pop in for some lunch or order delivery PREPARE TO WAIT. My tip is, after you've gone in once or twice to get a feel for the place, ALWAYS order ahead and TAKE THE FOOD OUT.
The ingredients are fresh, the food is fresh...the prices are very decent for what you're getting. The food is made to order and is delicious. I've been supporting them for over three years...much to my chagrin sometimes, as the owners often drag you into long conversations which can be quite annoying and innapropriate at times.
They have fantastic hours and the place is very clean. The atmosphere is nice when the owner's children aren't running around screaming and interrupting everyone (which is often). The owners are kind people at heart and will really go out of their way to get you what you want.
I remember I wanted a marshmallow, chocolate, and heath bar combination frozen yogurt, and the owner was out of those things so he rushed, jumped in his car and came back from the grocery store in 5 minutes just so I could get what I'd asked for.
The end result is:
-Excellent & fresh food that's made to order.
-A modest $10-12 for a meal (Sandwich/Calzone/Small pizza, dessert, drink, chips, an excellent value in my opinion).
-A clean establishment.
-Fast pick up service.
-Bad atmosphere.
-Slow delivery times.
-Somewhat annoying yet caring owners.
If you want excellent food at home, order take out from them.
BUT if you plan on eating in, just walk next door to the Soup Factory which has fantastic soups & salads with a much better atmosphere. -

Phenomenal sandwiches and soup - excellent service by very friendly and efficient staff. Creative menu. Oh, the sandwiches are huge and stacked with the freshest of ingredients on a wide selection of breads. The Patriot, the Chicken Avocado .... mmm! I only have one slightly unhappy thing to say - if you order delivery it can take an hour or more to get your food. I do think that it's admirable that they even offer delivery, because the restaurant is usually packed with plenty customers willing to come in and wait for such great food. And everything is made fresh to order. So I've given up delivery, and instead I call ahead and pick up, and that works out perfectly. Next time you're looking for lunch or dinner, forego the usual pizza, calzone or subs - you won't be disappointed by the sandwiches in this great restaurant in Salem. Huge KUDOs to KUSHCO

I had Cafe Kushco for the first time on Friday night. We ordered delivery, and it was a huge mistake. Delivery was quoted to us for 30 - 40 minutes, and it took more like 70 - 80 minutes. Huge mistake.
The food arrived cold and late. Meh. And, also no apology from the driver. Not even an acknowledgment that the food was late.
But, the reason for the 3 stars is because, even though cold, my tuna melt was huge, delicious and very well flavored! My friends both enjoyed their meals, as well.
We also got the potato salad as a side, and it was not very good. It was very reminiscent of the Stop and Shop deli counter potato salad. That is not a good thing.
Overall, if you're willing to wait, I would recommend this place. If you're not willing to wait, I would look for something else. -

I eat here with a friend of mine from time to time. The chicken parm and meatball wraps are great! The pizza is good too. The chicken teryaki wrap is great. They did away with the beef teryaki wrap, which was my favorite. This place is also vegetarian friendly.

Decent food with a Mediterranean twist. My panini was a bit on the greasy side, but with mushroom, onion, dijion and cheese it was a "bad breath on a plate" kind of paradise.
This is one of the only places I know, as well, that I can get tofu ice cream. As someone who is a self-proclaimed "lactard" with a vegan girlfriend, this is KEY. I enjoy the wide variety of ingredients you can mix your frozen yogurt/tofu ice cream with so that you'll never get the same thing twice.
As stated by other reviewers, don't bother with the delivery. It sucks. Especially if you want frozen yogurt which, yes, they will deliver, and it will arrive as a half frozen soup. Their drivers are creepy as well. -

My fave is the California roll-up.

Salem, MA
In the year that I've been going here the quality has slowly declined. I really love the menu and the concept and I really want them to get back to the level of quality that was there when I first began visiting them.
Last time I went I got take out with a few people. Upon our return home we saw that they had skimped on the ingredients (this gets more severe with every visit, which is contrary to the rising prices) and a few of us had ordered items with goat cheese which turned out to have gone bad, so we ended up sharing the two items with no goat cheese among four people. If the weather hadn't been so miserable I definitely would have brought the rotten goat cheese items back.
We all said the same thing--we really don't want to give up on this place because the memories of better days are so good! But another disappointment like that and I will personally have to call it quits.1 Previous Review: Show all »

i've gone into this place a number of times, just due to the fact that it is less than a drunken stumble from my front door. so on three separate occasions, i ordered a ham and cheese sandwich on white bread. perhaps the easiest, quickest sandwich to make EVER.
twenty-five. minutes. later.
still the only person in the place, and my sandwich will have just arrived. it's like someone had to go rustle up a hog, and then go carve the ham... this place just consistently takes a long time, whether you're getting a complicated panini with soup, or two slices of dry white toast (which I have yet to test).
two stars, because the sandwiches are actually pretty decent, despite a perplexing and consistently unnecessary wait time. -

Weekday lunch is always insanely busy- I think that shows a bit of how good this place is. Rated 3 instead of 4 because of atmosphere, I recommend take out over eating there.
The quality of sandwich varies, back when the owners themselves made the sandwiches they were amazing. I still get food here as I know what to expect. I love the variety of flavors they offer and will continue to eat here even with the bland decor. -

Cafe Kushco is a real gem when it comes to dining out in Salem. Not only is the food really good, but the owners are very very nice people.
This is not the same old disgusting sub shop that seems to be very popular in Salem, which usually includes rude employees, sports on a tv somewhere, meatheads, and drunk people. Here, you actually get a nice environment to socialize, have lunch, work on the computer (they have internet now), etc. It does take some time on occasion for the food to be done, but that's fine because it's fresh quality made food. So if you're in a rush, it's probably not the best place to go, but if you're looking for good food, and place to relax, it's perfect. -

The positives:
I admit I've never actually set foot into Cafe Kushco--I'm an Endicott College student, and I've only gotten delivery from them. Their wraps and sandwiches have been consistently delicious with fresh ingredients, and their frozen yogurts are really yummy! The unique flavors make it even more of an awesome experience. When the food from delivery arrives, it's almost always packed immaculately. The portions are more than enough (I always have leftovers!) and the prices are fair enough.
Now for the negatives:
It sounds like it is understaffed according to other comments. This is very believable--delivery wait time is RIDICULOUS, even for being at Endicott. I wait an average of 50 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes, and while I understand Endicott College isn't super close, it can be frustrating. It's also annoying to be told that for Endicott it's an $8 minimum fee for delivery when it says $7 on the menu. :(
But the food it so yummy that I almost don't mind waiting that long for it! ... Almost. If they are understaffed, I hope they hire more people! -
Review from Rachelle H.

when the cashier told me i owed $15 for a chef salad and a prosciutto/mozzarella/tomato/basil/etc. sandwich on regular multigrain bread, my brain did a WTF. then i put the sandwich in my mouf.
yes, the sandwich was delicious. i loved that it was great quality, thinly-sliced prosciutto. i come from eye-talian gloucester where prosciutto is done right, so i'm glad to have found some good stuff in salem. the sandwich was packed with stuff but didn't overwhelm and did not collapse under pressure. the bread, which initially bummed me out cause i like fancy bread, was actually very dense and tasty and loaded with multiple grains. it had a bit of a sweet flavor, but nothing to ruin the experience. good times. and it was only a little oily, but that's cause the roasted peppers were probably soaking in the shit for days. a very 4-star sandwich.
the salad, to be honest, i haven't had yet, but i looked at it for a long time. it's regular old garden salad with turkey, ham, and swiss. it's very large and, for february, the veggies look good. there is plenty of meat rolled up on top and, if it's like the prosciutto, it's great quality. you can usually tell just by looking at a salad if it's good, and i can tell i'm going to have a good lunch tomorrow. i'd say it's a 3.5 salad, just cause it takes a lot to impress me with a salad.
i haven't had anything else at cafe kushco but i'll probably update this review once i do. the cake slices looked absolutely ridiculous, and i'm super curious about their frozen yogurt; i feel like they have at least 20 varieties and they all sound like a tasty party. i'm going to stop in for a coffee at some point too, just to see what's up....cause fuck dunkin donuts. they had a shit-ton of soups and wraps and panini and fantasticness that made my brain do a dance. they have lots of good ingredients. avocado showed up on the menu several times. i have a boner for avocado.
i took my stuff to go because i felt like getting home to my dog, but it seems like a place i wouldn't mind, eating in-wise. it's not like a legit sit-down restaurant or anything, but there are plenty of large tables and it's nice enough in there. as i waited for my food to be prepared i didn't get bored cause there's a lot to see, plus the place is mainly windows, so you can do a lot of people-watching.
so yeah... good food, kinda steep prices, don't know if ALL the food and prices mix, but what i got was worth the money for the most part. i am certainly willing to try again to find out.
p.s. the salad was definitely good. -

The food is REALLY good... the service is REALLY shoddy. Actually, I should say the service is really inconsistant because sometimes it's very good and other times, you could wait forty minutes for them to make your food. And don't bother having them deliver - that'll take two hours. Order ahead of time and then pick it up.
I honestly love every single sandwich I've ever gotten from this place and they will go out of their way to make things the way you want them, even if it's not on the menu, so long as they have the ingrediants. And the staff is pretty friendly and VERY talkative.
I'll definitely get food from here again, but I will always call ahead and pick it up myself. -

i absolutely love cafe kushco. my boyfriend and i have frequented it over the past 4-5 years and it has been consistently good, even with the change of ownership. he often gets the boston college and raves about it every time....i typically get the HS5 (if it's still called that) which is the prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato and basil panini. pair that with literally ANY frozen yogurt mix and it's perfection. we live in beverly, but any time our friends are up from boston or other parts of the country, we tell them to be sure to stop there. the prices are fair and the service is good...what more can you ask for? love this place!!

I order from this place about every other day. I always go with the veggie pita wrap (minus a few ingredients and adding a few more). They are always extremely pleasant, at least since the new owners, and I love the fact that they deliver. There are not many healthy delivery options around and this beats pizza and Chinese by far. Love that they took away the minimum delivery amount also. I could eat here every single day. Worth the money and will continue to eat here as long as I live in Salem. AMAZING.

I wish I could give 5 stars, and I might have last year, but my last few visits to Kushco over the last few months have been somewhat disappointing. The wraps seem to have gotten smaller while the prices stay high, and I feel like the staff, while always friendly and polite, never get my order right. I'm vegan, so my two staples here are the California Roll-up without the cheese, and the tofu frozen yogurt. I would have given 3 stars but the deliciousness of the tofu froyo warrants 4 stars all on its own. On to my problems with the service, though: I'm not exaggerating when I say that for the last 6 months, every single time I have ordered the California roll-up with no cheese, it comes with cheese on it. I state very clearly while ordering that I don't eat dairy and don't want the cheese on it, but they never even write it down and my wrap always ends up with cheese on it. It happens when I get it delivered, it happens when I'm there in person; last time my fiance happened to be watching while they were making the wraps and stopped them as they were about to lay cheese on it. I just wish the person taking my order would communicate with the person making it. I want to keep eating here but it's really depressing to be picking cheese out of my food and having to throw it away when I could go to other vegan-friendly restaurants in town and not have to worry.

Love this place. A Salem State student recently purchased the business from the original owners. The menu has remained the same...thanks goodness! The prices are very reasonable and the food is delicious. I usually get two meals out of my sandwich! My favorite is the HS-11...not on the menu, but they will make it is you ask :)
