The view is absolutely breathtaking here. It's a large patio situated above the clouds, overlooking the ocean and the mountains.

We actually came here twice for breakfast. Blue Crab Eggs Benedict  is amazing! Cappuccino is right on the dot. But the VIEW takes the precedence over everything!

Must try the crab eggs benedict with avocado.  It is superb, but at $17 in the cafe I would say it is a little on the pricey side.  The restaurant is situated on a cliff right above the Pacific ocean in Big Sur, so the views are spectacular to enjoy while you dine or stroll around the grounds.
I gave it a 4 star only because although the food is very good, it is rather expensive for what you get.
The gift shop is stocked with many unusual items, but several things I found there I also came across in other shops in Monterey or Frisco, however the markup was almost 2x the cost as compared to those other locations.

Wow, what a restful spot on a road trip to Big Sur with our kids. The view is spectacular, and the food was the perfect compliment.

I went with the blue crab benedict (for a late lunch.) The crab was fresh and the serving size was just right. Roasted new potatoes with just the right amount of seasoning rounded out this delectable "brunch" entree.

My kids enjoyed the gourmet grilled cheese and the breakfast burrito, while my husband chose a lighter option- a cob salad. We all agreed that the steamed milk hot chocolate was one of the best we all have ever had.

I would have given this spot 5 stars, but I thought that they might want to have a few more less "breakfast specific" items on their lunch menu. We also felt that $90 for 2 adults and 2 kids for a quick "brunch" was a bit steep. Location, location, location!

But, if an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean with scrumptious food options is what you seek, then don't miss this unique spot.

Oh, and don't miss out on the shopping at the Phoenix downstairs. It's got one-of-kind gifts for everyone!

We were originally going to dine at Nepenthe but because the wait was 30 mintues we decided to try the Cafe Kevah few steps below Nepenthe.

Their menu yummy sounding. The view from the cafe was just as amazing as Nepenthe. Many seats with shades were provided for Cafe Kevah customers.

    We ordered:
Strawberry Banana smoothie  4.5 stars, super fresh and tasty
The Cafe Kevah Benedict 4.5 Stars, with blue crab nom nom nom
Arugula Salad 4.5stars, perfect amount of its tangy dressing

A must stop for brunch (not hungry then stop for their amazing view) while touring the scenic hwy 1. Great place to take pictures and eat yummy food! If you don't want to wait for Nepenthe and want simple yet sophisticated menu try the Cafe Kevah!

This place is beautiful!  We stopped for a quick lunch which is why we decided to try Cafe Kevah instead of the Nepenthe Restaurant.  It was moderately crowded, but it should not have taken 30 minutes just to get our breakfast burrito.  When the burrito finally did come it was delicious!  I definitely want to return, and hopefully next time we won't be in a hurry to get to our next destination.

    Location Location Location !
It's all about the location =)

Cafe Kevah is located on the famous CA -1 near Big Sur. The cafe is sandwiched between the mountains and the pacific ocean , and the view is just spectacular. While the food shouldnt be the focus when you are quite literally floating in the cloud over pacific ocean , the warm service and good food just add to the charm of the place.

Blue crab avocado eggs benedict, perfect enough for Marry Poppins.  One of the best views on planet Earth.  Not cheap but far from an arm and a leg, especially in this town.  The Cafe has *limited hours*, is weather dependent, and was, last I checked, only seasonally open.  What's more, I seem to remember the benedict only being offered on certain days.  Getting to eat it may require the timing of a small game hunter, but it is

    -well-

    worth it.

    Visited on a recent weekday...
Staff were friendly, the food prompt and the view spectacular.
I had the Eggs Benedict, which were far above average.  Wife had a poached egg, which she liked as well.
    Highly recommend.

Ate here for lunch on a bright sunny day in Big Sur. We were suppose to eat up top at the restaurant but there was a weight and we liked the menu  at Kevah better. My girlfriend had the reuben panini and salad and I went with the crab benedict. Both were really good, especially my order. They put a generous amount of crab on top and their hollandaise sauce was some of the best I have had. Everything meshed together really well and my stomach left satisfied. While I think it's a bit pricey, the food was good and you do get to enjoy a great view while eating.

Cafe Kevah's beautiful patio might be slightly overrun by tourists who think the scavenging birds are the most interesting thing they've seen in Big Sur (here's a game for you, count the Germans taking pictures of ordinary brown finches!), but their eggs benedict with crab meat is one of the best things I've ever eaten in this entire state!  It's becoming a small Big Sur ritual for the boyfriend and I stop here to enjoy the view and wolf down a plate of those eggs and a salad.

There is also an interesting gift store to explore and if you want a fancier meal, Nepenthe is just up the staircase.  The only downside of this place are your fellow diners. This last time we sat down next to 5 "having a mid-life crisis" "weekend motorcycle enthusiasts" types who then proceeded to take a conference call on one of their cell phones.  Cafe Kevah should ban cell phones from that beautiful patio!

(Prices are steep-ish but seriously, remember someone has to drive all these ingredients up and down Highway 1 to serve it to you.)

The darker the night the bolder the lion...

Fellow Yelpers and Friends:  Sometimes you just need to get away and find yourself: the burdens of the world can weigh us down and darken our world; or, sometimes self-doubt can set in and we are unsure of the right way in going forward.  When I need a shot of inspiration, I go to Café Kevah in Big Sur.

Café Kevah is about a 30-minute drive down the Big Sur coast from Carmel.  The highway hugs the coast and cuts through mountains and provides several places to stop to soak in some unbelievable, panoramic views of the ocean.

The café is next to Nepenthe Restaurant.  It is on an outdoor terrace with the Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean to the west.  From the terrace you can see up to 40 miles of coastline on a clear day.  The views are inspiring.

The menu has, mostly, breakfast and brunch items and is a bit pricey.  I like the Brioche French Toast ($9.50) and the Black Forest Ham Panini ($12.25).  All the baked goods are good.  There have been occasions when I've just sat on the terrace nursing a pot of peppermint tea or a cup of hot chocolate or a beer soaking in the views and the sun.

I usually come away from Big Sur feeling inspired and rejuvenated and determined to keep marching forward towards my dreams, never yielding, never wavering.  I hope that you will, too...

There's a scene in 1965's execrable "The Sandpiper" when a zaftig, caftan-enveloped Elizabeth Taylor, playing the world's most unconvincing hippie, tries to explain what Nepenthe means to an understandably confused Richard Burton. It takes place in what looks like a broad patio that has since turned into Cafe Kevah, the outdoor terrace just below its fancier sister restaurant, though both share the grand valley views. There are big family-style circular tables with umbrellas all about and a little bar set-up where they take your order.

They offer a solid brunch menu. After surviving the twists and turns of Hwy 1, I didn't have that much of an appetite and just tried the bruschetta, which was quite tasty. It came with a salsa fresca, chickpea puree and arugula, though the price was a tad steep at $7.75. My travel companion ordered a hearty though small bowl of chili with slices of toasted French bread that came to about $9.50. Most of the rest of the fare --- which includes eggs benedict, Cobb salad and several Panini sandwiches - is in the range of $11-15. But let's face it, you pay for a spectacular view on an uncrowded veranda (the tables are set fairly far apart). On a clear day, you can see the coastline as well, but keep in mind that the fog rolls in awfully thick around there. You should stroll over to the Phoenix shop to peruse the souvenirs, books and meditation tapes. I'm sure Liz and Dick did.

FOOD - 3.5 stars...good bistro fare but rather overpriced
AMBIANCE - 5 stars for the unparalleled Big Sur views on a clear day
    SERVICE - 3.5 stars
    OVERALL - 4 stars

Definitely worth a stop if you're in Big Sur, although my one and only visit here was a mixed bag because:

    a) there was no view (too foggy)
    b) it was cold and no heating lamps outside and no indoor seating  (I live in LA, OK? we need heat lamps!)
    c) my hot reuben sandwich took forever (didn't get it til half my party was done eating)
    d) I thought their signature eggs benedict with blue crab was gross.
    e) My sandwich and a pot of tea cost $20

You know, after enumerating all that, I had to go back and remove a star...you're down to 2 stars, Cafe Kevah. But I would still go back and try you again.

    Why? because:

    a) my $20 sandwich and tea was Dee-licious
    b) somewhere out there was a beautiful view, I just know it
    c) the service was pleasant
    d) I don't like crab period, so why did I bother even trying a bite of the eggs benedict with crab?
    e) there is an awesome gift shop on the premises

Cafe Kevah is a good alternative to Nepenthe upstairs especially if you don't want to fork over the money for the expensive food or the 30 min wait. CK is a more casual version of Nepenthe with mainly brunch foods and you still get equally AWESOME views.

My boyfriend and I split the scrambled egg brunch with bacon, roasted potatoes and toast. The wait for the food took FOREVER, when it finally came I was a little disappointed that there wasn't much scrambled egg. ($15)

The place has a whole neo-hippie, zen vibe to it. My stars mainly go the location and the ambiance, if you can do without the $15 scrambled eggs, just stop by and enjoy the view and browse the shop downstairs.

This would be known as the place that serves a $4 soda with a Million Dollar view.  Well, $3.52 to be exact...but I had to toss SOMETHING in the tip jar, right?

I didn't get the chance to check out the menu, as it was 3 in the afternoon and way too late in the day to have lunch.  The upstairs Nepenthe cafe was packed with people enjoying mostly burgers, wine and mixed drinks.  I wish I had arrived here earlier in the day to be hungry!

What you notice is that almost everyone around this amazing place is all smiles, whether it is the guests or employees.  It probably has something to do with the stunning views of the Pacific Coast shoreline meeting with the rolling hills above.  This is a fantastic place to stop and recharge if you are on a long, senic drive up or down highway.  You HAVE to stop here!  Cool gift shop below with lots of wind chimes and things that went GOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!

I will pay four dollars for that soda...thank you.

The food was good but dang it was expensive. We ordered a rueben panini, fontina & cheddar panini with grilled chicken, a beer and latte.

    Total bill $47 bucks.

The view priceless but there are lots of those along the way.  Needless to say if I go back I will likely share a meal with my girl or just stop for a cup of coffee.

The food and drink are great, but go to this place for the view and the vibe. Cafe Kevah is an outside cafe where one orders at the counter and they bring the food out to you. Grab a table as close to the SW corner as possible. If one isn't available, don't be shy--take your caffe latte to the corner and drink in the view.

If you're lucky, you'll see a raptor or two riding the thermals. You'll definitely see a few crows (and don't leave your sandwich unattended)!

Nepenthe, the restaurant one level up, is where the Beat Poets used to hang out. It's a special place and I'd planned eat there this trip, but since we picked one of the least-touristy weeks of the year to vacation, (second week of December,) it was closed for repairs.

I've been to Cafe Kevah at least five times over the 15 years I've lived in Cali, and I've loved it every time. This time I had a great salad and a double mocha, but as long as the was passable, I probably would have been happy.

At Cafe Kevah, you are on a slab of concrete suspended in the air above the cliffs of Big Sur. It is one of the most breathtaking places in the world and it inspired and inspires so many artists and thinkers.

Close your eyes and breathe in the sea air. Think about your favorite poem, your favorite piece of art. Isn't it great to be alive?

My other half and I were in Big Sur doing work stuff, which involved hiking for miles with 30 pounds of camera equipment strapped to our backs. We got done at about 2:15. The first place we stopped at was closed, and the second was - well, that's a topic in another review.

I was starving and on the verge of tears. My other half was strong, as he normally is.

Cafe Kevah, you're our only hope!

    And they did not disappoint.

We got there at 3:15pm. They had been due to close a little early, because there hadn't been many people in. But they reopened the kitchen for us (awesome!)

The sandwich I had was a panini - basically, the best grilled cheese sandwich I'd ever had in my life. My other half had Eggs Benedict, which he raved about. The view was breathtaking and the service was great.

But most importantly, we were famished, and instead of turning us away and acting like jerks, they were nice and friendly and fed us. We will come back again and again.

Also, there's a really great gift shop downstairs with an awesome book section (where the science fiction is not ghettoized, but mixed in with the rest of the fiction). We spent an hour poking around there after lunch.

Their speciality eggs benedict is off the chain.
My boyfriend and I decided that Cafe Kevah must be in every international tour guide book because it was like the United Nations up there.  A caravan of almost 20 (no joke!) tourists arrived and set up shop for an impromptu glamour shots photo session.  Didn't eat there . . . just took pictures, had their annoying children disrupt our brunch, and then left.
We got there at 11:30am on a Sunday, had no wait, and found a seat no problem.  I guess it's just luck.

I honestly wasn't expecting much when I was following a friend up the stairs from the parking lot to the patio where the cafe was situated. "It's just another outdoor cafe", I thought. "How special could it be?"

    Pretty damn special, apparently.

The menu is actually pretty limited, covering several types of salads, sandwiches, egg dishes, etc. I ordered the rosemary grilled prawns because I have a weakness for shellfish (and unique menu items). It actually took a little while for the food to come out, which is fine because the environment is so pleasant. But when the food comes out... oh man.

    So, so tasty.

The prawns that I ordered weren't too special (pretty much as expected), but I sampled quite a bit of my friend's Cafe Kevah Eggs Benedict, and it was absolutely criminal how good they were. I went with quite a large group, and pretty much anyone who didn't order the Eggs Benedict wished they had. I know I did!

But that isn't the end of the story. Once you're finished with your meal and you're sitting back and enjoying the afternoon sun, it suddenly hits you that the view is absolutely incredible. Seriously stunning. You're perched high up, and you can see the vast Pacific Ocean framed by trees and rolling green hills.

And so, drinking from a cup filled with a delicious strawberry and banana smoothie and basking in a view fit for a king, you realize... at that moment in time, you are content.

Okay, so I might've gone overboard with the hyperbole, but Cafe Kevah is absolutely worth a visit if you're in the area. Order the Cafe Kevah Eggs Benedict.

    SCHPECTACULAR VIEW!  JUST SCHPECTACULAR!

Here's whatcha do.  Take your flabby can up the Ventana Wilderness trail - i only head in 5 miles, but 7 miles takes you into the hot springs where i hear nekkid wet folks abound.  Do this when it is hot, and make sure you spend at LEAST one night, preferrably youll pack in only what is necessary - a bland meal and a few power bars.  Also, dont overdo it on the water, cause you need to work up a thirst to go with that appetite.

Ok, so you head out, hike it on down to the lot, drop your pack in the car and head to Cafe Kevah.  Wrap your crackly lips around the straw that sticks  out of a delicious and refreshing smoothie.  Regain your strength by brunching upon any number of tasty omelets, sammiches, and salads.  And do this all while enjoying one of the best views the coast has to offer.

One of the best afternoons of my life was spent just this way! :)

    Love,
    Sara

I'm not gonna lie, from the road, this place looks scary. Scary in an overly-touristy-hippie-granola-type of way. With names like "Nepenthe," "Kevah," and "Phoenix" visible from the road, I thought this place was a new age wellness center, not a restaurant.

Out of curiousity, we stopped here for brunch. I sent the bf up to do a recon mission to let me know if it was too weird. He gave the go ahead, and we walked up the stairs to the cafe...and one of the most amazing views of Big Sur.

I felt immediately relaxed. Compared to other places in Big Sur, it's totally unpretentious, food is solid, and people are friendly. If you look around, everyone is leaning back, smiling, and totally in the moment.

I don't usually write touchy-feely yelps like this, but something about this place -- whether its bohemian vibe, its storied history, or perfect location -- is pretty special.

Do not dine here....just enjoy the view and move on, for a decent dinner, drive a few miles back into Carmel....the service at Big Sur Lodge is good as a closer alternative.

Good food and very relaxing environment - felt like a spa waiting room with the music.

Food was great. I ordered French Toast with berry compote.  It was very light, and not as heavy as other FT I've had in the past.  Which is a PLUS.

The chai latte was not hot enough, even tho the waiter said it was super hot and to be careful.

    Waiters are very nice too.

This place is a wonderful stop and everyone should go here to eat and take in the views of Big Sur.

On our way back from a fun camping trip we noticed our tummies were a rumblin'... where to go? WHat to do? We had food in the back of the car, but really... had no energy nor desire to eat more camp food... my friend suggested we stop at the place and I was game... food!  So we ended up going upstairs and had a good meal (scrambled eggs, toast, potatos and fruits), yummy ice tea and a great view!

I give this place 3 stars for the food, another star for the stunning view. I got some great shots from there.

Back in August, my sister and I decided to take a week off work and drive up the coast.  We stopped at Cafe Kevah for lunch.  I had the Cafe Kevah Benedict and a cappuccino.  Both were absolutely perfect with the gorgeous view.  I'm a huge crab eater and the blue crab and avocado were super yummy on the eggs benedict!  The hash was delicious with the Pepper Plant hot sauce they provide.  (We're not from the area, so we ended up buying a bottle from the shop downstairs.)  I was in a euphoric state as I sat there eating my food.  The weather was perfect and I really could have sat there all day.  Aside from the strange woman at the next table glancing over at us way too often, my lunch here was wonderful.

My sister and I had a great time here.  Unfortunately, since I've had Cafe Kevah's eggs benedict, I can no longer order eggs benedict anywhere else.  The others just don't compare anymore.  I get this urge to ditch the adult life and drive up to Big Sur every month or so and Cafe Kevah is now one of my must-stops for lunch/brunch while in Big Sur.

Side note: On our way there, we mistakenly ended up in a parking lot across the road, not knowing where we were in relation to Nepenthe/Cafe Kevah.  When we got out of the car to scope out the area, this woman ran out and gave us directions.  I guess we were taking up parking space in the lot of what she said was an art gallery.  So don't park there, but maybe check out the gallery if you get a chance.  From the outside, the place looked pretty cool.

I had the misfortune of only driving through Big Sur on my way down the coast. We made several stops for a quick photo or two, but I saw most of the area from the passenger seat of my car. The only time we spent really soaking in our gorgeous environment was at Cafe Kevah, where we stopped for lunch.

I ordered the French toast with berry compote and a soy chai tea latte, and my boyfriend got the breakfast burrito (eggs, cheese, potatoes and bacon). Everything tasted great after a long drive, but what made the meal infinitely better was the cafe's setting. The cafe (and its sister restaurant, Nepenthe) are built high and scoot up to the ocean.

If I had to rate Cafe Kevah just on food, it'd be more like a 3.5. My berry compote looked like frozen fruit, and its cold temperature took away a little from the warm, French toast (made with really great brioche). But even if the food was awful, I'd probably still order something just so I could sit and stare at my beautiful surroundings.

This is one of the best place i would reccomend you to take your love ones to visit. The Egg benedict is awesme, the view is breathtaking. What more can I say.  You have to visit Cafe Kevah.

You may only enter to this site, coming from HWY 1 N. If you are coming from 1 S, you'll need to make an appropriate U turn not too far from Cafe Kevah.

    Cheers,

Kevah is a casual open deck below Nepenthe, much more spacious than Nepenthe with the same stunning views.  You can order beverages, breakfast-type meal items, sandwiches and salads from a limited menu.  Then sit down at any of the available tables and enjoy the view, soon to be joined by a delectable blue-crab and avocado eggs benedict and fresh-squeezed OJ...

A nice alternative to the bustling restaurant above.  Stopped off here on Big Sur day trip and glad we did!  The cafe was much more laid back, had a simple menu and was much quieter than the restaurant above.  People were simply enjoying the view and eating at their leisure.  I can't comment much on the food too much as we only got Mimosas and a cheese plate, but the eggs benedict that the waiter brought out for the table next to us looked so good I was tempted to order my own....  Sure the prices are a bit on the high side, but for a view that can be had, at a relaxed leisurely pace while sipping a nice drink; just consider it an "entrance fee" and the food is just a bonus.

Cafe Kevah is located on the middle level of the Nepenthe restaurant grounds. All of the seating is outdoors, with a booth to order your food. There isn't true waiter service, but a server will bring out your food when ready. I had the eggs, toast and bacon which were all good. My enthusiasm for this place was tempered by the weather, it was a chilly morning and there are no indoor tables.
