Love Cafe Guy and Gallard for their fresh food. My faves are the Classic Chicken Salad and Smoked Turkey Sandwiches and spiced chai. The oatmeal could use some improvement though.

Ok, I admit we were trying to go to Penelope, but didn't feel like waiting an hour so we went to the next best rated place and ended up here.
Pro: No wait, nice contemporary decor. The best part was walking in and sitting down immediately. Also, after a slight glitch initially, they wait staff (or manager) became very attentive after the food was served.
Cons: I'll be honest, the high ratings surprised me because I was a little more than disappointed. Granted we got seated right away, but even as small as the place was, it took the waiter FOREVER to get just our drink order. Now I got the eggs benedict and kinda sorta disappointed. The egg was probably overcooked and more of a fried egg than a poached egg. Potatoes were just OK.
Would not choose to come back here. -

Great service because there weren't many customers.
Tried its Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine and Banana Pancakes.
The two savoury dishes were very bland - got to salt and pepper them vigorously to provoke my taste buds.
Banana Pancakes ... were of home-made quality.
I should have done the 45-minute wait for Penelope. -
Review from Anand M.
I was really skeptical to go to a cafe that was run by the same people as the over priced and boring Guy & Gullard. It seems I was right. The orange juice was very good, but at $5 a glass, give me the hand juicer and Ill do it myself.
I had the pancakes which were dry and almost stale. It was not Fluffy and soft as they should be. I appreciated the grilled/caramelized banana but a tighter grill should have been used. The fritata with spinach, onions, feta, and a few other items was just ok. If you do go, this is probably the best bet. Other tables seemed to really enjoy the sandwiches. -

An OK neighborhood place. We wound up here thanks to yelp reviews and a 90 minute wait elsewhere. The owner was super friendly and got a table together for our group quickly.
I had their pancakes with bananas while everyone else got eggs. My pancakes were OK and the eggs looked much better. Great crispy bacon.
They do have beer & wine, but no mimosas. -
Review from Nancy S.
This place was such a fantastic (and accidental) brunch find!!!
After hearing that Penelope had a 1 hr wait for 2 people, a girlfriend and I decided to walk around and find another place nearby that would serve us brunch and fast, as we were in a bit of a hurry.
Cafe Guy & Gallard seemed very clean and the design was hip and modern inside. As we came in, we were greeted pleasantly and sat quickly. I ordered the eggs benedict and grapefruit juice and my friend ordered the corn chowder soup and 2 eggs, hash, and bacon platter.
Let me first say.. although I was a bit hesistant to purpose the grapefruit juice at 6$ a cup, this was.. THE BEST grapefruit juice I've ever had! I felt like I was drinking straight from a grapefruit.... It was perfectly squeezed with just the right amount of pulp and I was immediately put in a great mood!
The food was great as well. Nothing AMAZING but still great for the price. I believe my eggs benedict was only around 6.50! My friend's soup was delicious and her entree good as well.
The service was fast and courteous and set up "diner style".
Definitely hit this place up for brunch if you're not looking for something "chic" and delicious but economical, efficient, and delicious! -

Tables are so close together, it's like having breakfast with strangers.
Remarkable that anyone would think that their orange juice is fresh squeezed. It is the same pasteurized yellow gunk you find almost everywhere else, maybe just a bit pulpier. So, $4.75 for a glass of Minute Maid. Asked for water instead, which never arrived.
We ordered an omelette with chicken sausage, but it came with little bits of ham instead. When asked if it was ham, the waiter said yes. When we told him we had ordered chicken sausage, he said that it was actually chicken sausage. It was ham.
Overall, a very irritating experience. -
Review from Thomas M.
There's a sit down version of the ever so popular chain. The place feels like a nice change, but the food is just disappointing. So disappointing that I don't remember what they were.

Review from Amy A.
So, I've noticed that Cafe Guy & Gallard is a chain, and always thought they were exactly the same... until I stumbled upon this location. OMG - shock! It's like a diamond in the rough. Such a nice change of pace compared to its counterparts around the city! Cafe Guy & Gallard has a very nice feeling for a relatively quick / cheap eats kind of place, with both bar seating and tables. Everything is made fresh and is fairly affordable (even the fish!) and the portions are very generous.
In no way is this a fancy place or a destination cafe - it is simply reliable and great for a meal if you are passing by. With that said, I would go back here without hesitation. -
Review from Phil H.
Solid lunch spot in the Flatiron/Midtown east area. Service is friendly, very clean, big menu with lots of specialty sandwiches, and beer/wine too. Also serves a decent breakfast and I love the oatmeal here. Enough tables and chairs but can get pretty crowded during lunch hours.
They even have counter/bar seating that overlooks the food prep area. Everything is made fresh and is relatively inexpensive. They have "signature" sandwiches and "cafe" sandwiches which are specials of the house. You can also create your own. Plus, you get a salad serving with each so it is a nice change if avoiding fatty french fries.
The chicken sandwiches and the house roasted beef are very good. They also have a rotating list of soups for each day of the week, with 5-6 types each day.
Plus, if eating in they will bring your food over to you. You can take your time and eat. Even when crowded I never feel rushed. Never had a bad lunch here. -
Review from Janice D.
Took me a month but I found it!! A great Lunch/breakfast spot in the area.
I've come to terms with the fact that I will not find decent cheap food in this Midtown East location, but Guy and Gallard Cafe is somewhere in the middle and its fresh. Coffee is excellent too! breakfast is cheap, lunch is standard but good! -

Like the Star rating said...I've had better. We ordered via seamless web and I got severely overcharged. I could understand if the bagels weren't fresh, but they tasted like they were a few days old. The outside was a bit hard and the inside was a bit flaky. My friend ordered a Flank Steak signature sandwich and he said there was nothing special about it. For that price, I could get a full meal that actually has some flavor....soooo never ordering from here again!

Review from Edgar S.
I've eaten here many occasions and have never had an issue with food, service etc.
The food is made fresh and is actually really good. The seating is a bit cramped, but it's an "eat and go" type resturant, not really a spot to eat and get comfortable for hours.
The service is actually pretty good. The waiters are fast and attentive. However, I did have an issue today. The waiter added someone elses food on my bill. I'll give dude the benefit of the doubt and say it was a mistake, but I do know waiters/waitresses and according to them, this is something they do knowlingly.
I'd go back and I recommend it, however, check the damn bill. -
Review from Jaci H.
I've enjoyed lunch here on several occasions and always had a pleasant experience.
The menu can accommodate to any taste and has a nice selection of healthy and not-so-healthy options.
I usually go with the fish since its relatively inexpensive and not something I would get in another eatery nearby. For $10 to $12 you'll get a descent sized piece of fish (we are talking lunch here, you don't need to eat an entire salmon), and two sides. The sides are always tasty like roasted veggie orzo or sauteed greens.
The salmon and the filet of sole is really good. I also enjoyed the seared tuna salad with mango and avocado with mixed greens. They have tons of salad dressings to choose from, so everyone gets something they like.
The service is fast and polite. You can seriously have lunch here in 20 minutes. I like to take my time and they don't rush you out. It's fairly small but they turn over tables quickly since people want to get back to work.
I would say this is a great place to get lunch with coworkers or a very casual meeting. Not sure what the dinner situation is here, but definitely plan on coming back for a healthy satisfying lunch here in the future. -

I come here all the time and cant live without it. Best coffee in the neighborhood and best staff around too. The girls at the counter always remember my order and can pretty much tell if I want iced or hot coffee based on the temp outside, AMAZING! Food is always good, only criticism would be the bagels. I'm not sure if its the bagels themselves, the cream cheese or what but I am always dissapointed.
Menu could have more simple items on the breakfast side too. Lunch menu is perfect though. Soups are a little pricey. -

The coffee's pretty good, and there's some relatively inexpensive food options but whenever I order them if it's not already pre-made I end up waiting forever to get it. It's worth stopping in every once in awhile for a coffee and a breakfast burrito though.

A little upscale than your run-of-the-mill diner. Some healthy choices. Tastes good. Can get packed during peak times.

[SEAMLESS WEB REVIEW]
Mushrooms in the morning, mushrooms in the evening; mushrooms at supper time....
What can I say? I like 'shrooms -- of the classic variety, that is.
Their mushroom lasagna, which I would normally hesitate to order considering my usual total dislike of Italian food, was very good and came with a nice and fresh side salad that was more than just iceberg. The mushrooms were in no way related to any of that canned crap, and the salad had about eight different dressing choices. Rock on! All this for about eight bucks, too.
The capper, though....that bumps this place up from an "Audrey-approved, I'll keep this place in mind" three stars to a "definitely ordering from here again" four stars is their pear cake. I know this is practically blasphemy to say, but I kept trying to figure out where I had had something similar....and the names that kept coming to mind -- namely, Bouley, db bistro moderne, and Tabla -- are seriously no joke.
Starrage by association with these decidedly big boys?
Hey, I've succumbed to worse reviewing whims... -

In Search of Breakfast
I rarely eat Breakfast. At least, at breakfast time. Oh, sure, I love me some pancakes, waffles, french toast, and benedicts... But I generally like them in the middle of the night... or for Sunday Brunch.
Also being in New York, I tend to skip it anyhow based on the anticipation of noshing my way through the city for the entire day.
That notwithstanding, I found myself searching with some friends for a good, quick breakfast place on a Saturday Morning. Wandering Murray Hill, We found Cafe Guy and Gallard.
Cafe Guy and Gallard was one of the culinary highlights of my trip. Guy and Gallard are fairly well-known grab-n-go places in the city. This Cafe version had table service and a good variety of food that was fresh and inexpensive. Seriously. Inexpensive. In New York City. I know, right?
Knowing I had a full lunch plate at The Carnegie Deli ahead of me, I went light, opting for the Yogurt, Berry, and Granola parfait. ($2.95. Seriously!) It was decadent, rich, sweet-tart yogurt, crunchy granola, fresh strawberries. (See Photo!) My dining companions split a 2 Egg Breakfast, with thick, crisp bacon, perfectly crisp and seasoned Home Fries, and a bagel, all for about $8. (Absolutely UN. HEARD. OF!) The OJ was good, fresh-squeezed, and fresh, and the coffee was hot and rich. The perfect wake-up call for a morning of rambling on Canal Street, and leading up to Lunch at the Carnegie. -

It may seem a bit on the pricey side, but the food certainly fills you up. A lot of the dishes you get to order 2 sides and often this is more than enough and certainly worth the price.
Several times, the staff messed up the order, however we were given to redo the order and they even offered us some complimentary pastries. Talk about good service! The staff is always friendly and they will do their best to make your eating experience as good as it gets.
The fish is extremely good, especially the seared tuna loin which is a favorite. I also love their fries, always crispy and golden brown.
The only downside is lack of space. There is plenty of room for two or 4 people to sit together, but their tables are mainly for 1-2 seaters and not very good for large groups. I've seen them combine 4-5 tables in order to house larger groups, but having to shout 4 tables down to your friend isn't the same as sitting at a round table.
One of the best places to grab some good food and just relax. -

On a rainy weekend like this, Cafe Guy is my hero.
They serve breakfast until 2pm. Egg white omelettes are $7 and are accompanied by homefries. Everything always tastes fresh and clean, never greasy or heavy. They use beautiful packaging, white folded boxes inside a heavy duty brown bag bearing their logo. Yes, these things matter. -

Thank you fellow Yelpers... I wouldn't have found this wonderful place without you!!! I was here at the end of June and still remember how awesome it was.
Huge menu with great prices! I'm from Sam Diego & this would be inexpensive there as well. $5.95 for Eggs Benedict? Unheard of! It came with "home fries", which can mean a lot of things... Here they are yummy roasted red potatoes with onions, all perfectly cooked!
Open layout, bar overlooks cooking prep area. Simple clean lines, wall bench seating with 14 two-top tables. I like details & loved the small centerpieces: clear vases of fresh green herbs (rosemary & sage).
Coffee, including a great spiced Chai. Alcohol: I didn't have any. Wine list good, 4 each of red & white $6-7/glass. Beer in bottles $5 choice of 13 varieties.
Huge variety on the menu... This is great for it's flexibility-- if 1 person wants a meal & the other just wants coffee or a bagel ($0.90). -

3.5 stars for this place. It's difficult to rate properly because they do so many things well and also many things poorly.
For starters, their fresh squeezed OJ and corn muffins were the best I've ever had bar none. I kept returning every day for the juice alone. Their black forest cake was delish as well.
On the other hand, they served my burnt espresso and their salad and smoked Norwegian sandwich were somewhat underwhelming. You apparently need to get up at the crack of dawn to have breakfast here. I was disappointed to find they stopped serving breakfast when I went there at 10:30a.
While it's a chain in Manhattan, it still has the feel of a local joint. Recommend checking out if you're in Midtown. -

Go to this cafe and experience the following:
1) Take out- Order a simple coffee and bagel and watch the girl at the register press 25 buttons as if she is entering nuclear launch codes. She will repeat your order incorrectly and then press another 10 buttons. You will see the order print out behind her, and you will watch it be ignored. You will wait 10 minutes and experience people who entered after you get served. Your order will arrive 15 minutes after you placed it. You have a 50/50 chance it is right.
2) Eat in- See above with plates instead of a bag. -

Excellent & inexpensive brunch. We had a delicious omelette (highly recommend the carmelized onions & mushroooms). The pizzette with wild mushrooms, fontina cheese, & trumpet oil was AMAZING. No Jamaica Blue Mtn coffee, but food was top notch & affordable. Also, they have real fresh squeezed OJ & grapefruit juice, which was excellent.
Update: We came back the next day to get more pizza and try a sandwich. The portabello mushroom sandwich was not as flavorful as I would have liked (maybe just not enough of the arugala pesto sauce). The pizza wasn't quite as amazing the second time around, but still great and definitely the right price. -

Eastchester, NY
I've never ordered out from here and had mostly dinner, some lunch, although I hear the brunch is very good.
Prices: VERY reasonable. Where else can you get fish, 2 fresh sides and a small green salad for under $11?
Service: Excellent and attentive. I've been going here for about a year now and the staff is very friendly and on first name basis with me.
Quality of food: Again, excellent, especially for the low prices! I've had the quesadillas (prefer without the american cheese - that's just wrong), the mahi mahi, salmon, cod, chicken avocado sandwich (good on sourdough and they'll warm the chicken if you ask).
Soups - they've expanded to have abut 4-5 soups a day. Lentil needed some flavor, but others were good.
Coffee and hot chocolate are also very good. -

New York, NY
I can't believe no one's put a review down on this place yet. I was out last weekend with a friend of mine, being new to the neighborhood I had no idea where to take her. It started raining and we saw this cafe with interesting clean cut modern interiors. It caught my attention.
I went in with low expectations and came out a very satisfied customer! Service was great. The waiter kept asking "How's everything my ladies?" which was nice. Food was equally fantastic. I got my basic brunch item, eggs benedict (with smoked salmon this time) and my friend had the pan fried sole fillet. Being Asian, of course we took a bite off each other's plates. The sole was good and the side dish was really yummy. My eggs were also good, better than the overpriced version on 29th and Park (I'm not going to say which resto for now) *hint* *hint*. I have to admit, I was staring at my friend's plate. The grass was greener on the other end of the table.
I had a cup of coffee which I don't think had refills but I actually got one extra. Probably noticed a newbie. I'm definitely going back for brunch one of these weekends.
Oh and pretty much all the breakfast items were under $10. Lunch items average at $15. Really great price for good food!

I've left NYC for 7 months and each time I came back to visit, I try to swing by. The last few times were all at lunch. Fish is great and I recommend trying their orzo and barley side dishes. -

This was a nice little cafe around the corner from the hotel I stayed at (Hotel 31). It was a perfect spot to drop in, cool off, grab some coffee and a sandwich and relax for a few.
I had a really well-made cappuccino and a delicious chicken/bacon/avocado sandwich. Yummola. -

Chicken was rubbery but mushroom sauce was good. Cous cous was also delicious. Sandwiches looked good so will need to try them.

I work in Midtown East, so slim picking when it comes to good food for good prices. The food in this area is, and has always been, lackluster. Finding decent food is a chore and you have to pay handsomely for mediocre.
I found Guy & Gallard Cafe through seamless web, and it was a welcome surprise. Their fish is delicious and priced right if you order from the lunch specials.
Unfortunately, their veggies, which often accompany the meal, are less than inspired. In any other area of NYC I'd give this restaurant 2 stars, but for midtown, it gets three. A backhanded compliment, I know, but a compliment nonetheless. -

So many places say they have caramelized onions - but it is only here that I've found them! They are the darkest dark and the sweetest sweet, like the savory candy that (my) dreams are made of; tucked inside a fluffy egg white omelet with asparagus and Gruyere cheese is a near perfect breakfast. But the sucker punch comes with the rosemary red roasted potatoes, they are the best I've ever had the honor to eat... it's a total knock out! And for this one dish, 5 stars, bravo!

The soups and sandwiches are decent and passable, though, not quite earthshaking. The coffee sucks. Prices are good and delivery is very fast via Seamless Web. Good place for a bite in a pinch.

Summit, NJ
location: they win because they are right across from my office
price: very reasonable considering where they are and the fact that it is a real restaurant with waiter service
decor: simple, clean and neat. a bit small but i favor smaller restaurants.
beverages: they have buy one get one wine on weeknights.
i like the build your dish idea. basically you pick your protein, and 2 side dishes. all for between $7-$12. so it's a steal. the portion is normal (not overly big).
i had most of their fishes, and they are good. my favorite is Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass and Oven Roasted Cod.
Also had the Hungarian Beef Goulash which is very hearty as well.
Well flavored but a decent price. Good for lunch and dinner.
I am a regular and will be their regular. -

New York, NY
We often get their catering for work since it's so close, but I have nothing good to say about the food. Sorry, but I think the bagels are an embarrassment to NYC, and maybe I'm just sick of the sandwiches by now. However, I have enjoyed their Happy Hour before. I know, it sounds weird, but they do have a Happy Hour M-F from 5-7 and you can get 2 for 1 drinks. Granted, it's not the typical "Happy Hour" atmosphere you look for, but it's good if someone wants to eat a quick dinner or if you're looking to cheaply pass the time before you move on elsewhere. I drank two Coronas for $5, so I can't complain about that.

Loved the atmosphere and the simple, modern decor. The french toast was absolutely amazing! The french toast came with caramelized apples, drizzled in butterscotch sauce....delicious! I also noticed the entrees other people ordered and the food looked awesome! If I was hungrier, I would have ordered more. I'll be back next time for sure!

A really nice, modern, open-air cafe. We were hoping they served breakfast all day, but that wasn't the case--the menu is a little misleading. But the grilled chicken sandwich with pesto was really great. Fresh squeezed juices are a plus. The service is super friendly and attentive.

Needham, MA
I found this restaurant on Yelp and chose it because of its location near my hotel as well as user reviews. I was not disappointed. The place seems to do most of its business with takeout orders. There is one row of tables against one wall. The place has a European feel. Service was fast, food simple. Fresh squeezed OJ was excellent.
