It was a great idea to replicate the Cafe Gitane in this boutique hotel (Hotel Jane). With the same affordable menu, the place is gorgeous and the service is better than in Nolita.

They usually have tables available without reservation.
There is a great club in the same hotel to have a drink after dining in Café Gitane.

This place is located in the Jane Hotel close to the West Side Highway.. Its a bit of a trek but the place is really very pretty. I love the decor..it has a very Havana-esque feel to it.

We came here for a brunch on a Sunday afternoon and didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes. The service is very friendly.

The menu seemed kind of confused since they had asian, french and moroccan inspired dishes (guess thats why its called gitane?). I'm always leary of restaurants like that, but the food here was pretty good. We ordered the baked eggs with salmon and potatoes and the tuna salad. The eggs were good -  a little bland but I didn't mind at all. The tuna salad was very fresh and tasty, but a little TOOOO spicy for my taste. The lattes and juices were very good too.

I would come back here again and definetely recommend it.

Who doesn't love an afternoon wandering around in the West Village? An atypical warm, sunny day in December, running errands and working up an appetite, we stepped into Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel to grab a few bites to re-energize for the next round of shopping.

There was a quiet din in the high-ceiling cafe, I love the aged light blue walls and Moroccan/ Parisian touches throughout the room that add whimsy and charm. The little wooden cafe tables and banquettes are perfect for cozying up next to someone special.

The coffee is delicious and was exactly what I needed... but if you're a fan of Equal sweetner, as I am, be sure to bring it with you... I realize more and more that restaurants don't indulge in the chemically enhanced sugar, but here I am digressing... what to order!!! My favorite part. There's a variety of small plates, sandwiches and perfectly petite salads... all of which can fill you up entirely (as it did for us) or leave just satiated enough to make it through the afternoon. We ordered the avocado toast with chili flakes... the avocado was fresh and generously spread on top of a delicious piece of whole wheat toast... I would've liked more chili flakes, but the hint of lemon was also refreshing. Also ordered was a salad of mixed greens, beets, and balsamic with baguettes lathered in rich, creamy cheese, I could've eaten it all, except I was trying to be good!

And lastly, not for the faint of heart, the Moroccan cous cous... I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the mountainous saffron-colored cous cous with hummus spilling off the top, it resembled a volcano of deliciousness. The cous cous was sauteed with eggplant, tomatoes, and some other vegetables... I would've liked a little more salt to it, but really it was the perfect nosh... great to share and pick at.

The restaurant became more and more crowded as our meal went on - big groups for brunch, sleepy couples for breakfast, girlfriends excitedly sharing their shopping scores. It was lovely. And I'll keep it in mind for my next West Village jaunt.

Beautiful restaurant inside a beautiful hotel in the cutest NYC neighborhood. I was dumb and ordered a beet and goat cheese salad, but my date ordered the amazing couscous and hummus. Delish and the portion was huge. Two meals on that plate. I will be back to get that dish. Cocktails were yummy and our waiter highly recommended their sandwiches too.

Love this Cafe Gitane. Never have the patience to wait for an hour at the Mott St. one to then be sat 1 inch away from the person at the next table. Not to mention how grossed out I am by the mini non-kitchen.
Cafe Gitane at the Jane offers the perfect solution: rarely a wait (even for weekend brunch), great decor, and the same amazing food as the original Cafe Gitane. Great staff, always very efficient and very nice. Love it here!!!

"Something about you, changes my attitude. You take on nostalgia and make it brand new." - Magnetic North

Sometimes life moves a little faster than usual in this crazy city, and you find yourself continually having to schedule time to catch up with friends whom you haven't seen in a while. After so many "we need to hang out" and "let's have lunch sometime", you finally scribble in a date and time in your calendar to actually meet. Or in my case, add an entry in your Google Calendar. The next task at hand then, is to find a location.

Luckily, my friend allowed me to choose the restaurant at which we met for brunch. Putting my trust in DailyCandy's editors' taste, I turned to my bookmarked list of brunch places that they've written about and picked out Cafe Gitane, which is about equidistant to both my friend and me. Located on the ground floor of The Jane, next to the Hudson River, the restaurant's casual decor and checkered tile floor immediately welcomed me to an easy state of mind as soon as I arrived. My friend was already waiting for me at the bar, sipping a Moroccan Bloody Mary and, being the social media savant that she is, had even uploaded a picture of the magnificent drink to facebook.

Relying on Yelper recommendation, my friend suggested the Avacado Toast for us to share. Beyond that, I was initially indecisive on what to order from Cafe Gitane's menu, which is not the typical NY brunch menu. So of course, the item which looked completely unfamiliar to me jumped out - the Hachi Parmentier. I asked our waitress what exactly was a Hachi Parmentier, and she replied that it was like a shepherd's pie.

With a substantive spread of avacado on top of some amazingly tender bread, the Avacado Toast was amazing. The Hachi Parmentier was also delicious, and just as the waitress had said, it was just like Shepherd's Pie. And thanks to Wikipedia, I learnt that the dish was named after the late 18th-century French nutritionist Antoine-Augustin Parmentier, who promoted potato as an edible crop. Thanks, Antoine!

The food at Cafe Gitane was fantastic, but more fantastic still was catching up with a dear friend.

    GREAT espresso.

That's an instant win for me.

Food, everything I've had I've thoroughly enjoyed. Couscous, baked eggs, small plates (avocado toast!), pastries. All good. The watermelon mimosa, though expensive, is a good splurge. One I never regret.

I also find myself judging a place based on the bathroom experience. And this bathroom is soo far from offensive. It's probably the nicest Manhattan bathroom I've ever experienced. Not scary in the least.

Decor is a lovely welcome, and people are ALMOST ALWAYS nice. I've never really had a bad experience, actually all of my customer service experiences with these people has been quite pleasant.

The location on Mott, however, another story. (though I think they're used to serving super models there, and I don't exactly fit there.)

The lovely Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel gets my endorsement.

Just came in for a relaxing late lunch, as usual the food was very good, but the service was horrible. Maybe the waitress should spend less time flirting with the bartender and more time paying attention! The busser ripped my water of the table no explanation, no return, just a sour looking face. I don't go out anywhere to be treated so poorly. I will not be back!!!

Avocado Toast! Craaazyy! : Its very filling, and should be shared as an appetizer.
I had the Grilled Eggpant with tapenade and goat cheese: It stimulated my taste buds like never before. I LOVED IT.

My boy Russell Chase had the baked pasta, he raved about it.
    The cappuccino was amazing.

I love this place.  I come here at least once a week to have afternoon tea.  I think the waitstaff are friendly and he service is wonderful.  I spend hours writing here and drinking tea and enjoying their delicious pastries.

If you want to be in more of a "scene", go to the SOHO spot, but if you want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, come to this location.

And get the Avocado Toast.  Yummy...

Went for brunch/lunch with my bestie.  We split the avocado toast and I got the cous cous.  Both dishes were unique, deilcious, and inventive.  The avocado toast (with chili flakes and lemon juice) could have used a bit of salt and more lemon juice.  The cous cous (w/ sweet peppers, potatoes, and other stuff) was HUGE and delicious and came with three small slices of baguette and it was topped with the yummiest hummus.

Also, get the MELON MIMOSA! so bomb and okay-priced ($9), it's not on the menu so just ask.

Also, it was rated the best place for brunch for 2010 according to NY Mag and i agree! very cute, good decor, great food and not crowded!

And they do take credit card, unlike the other person who said they didn't

Was looking for a brunch spot in the west village and happened upon this place - what a great find.  You feel like you're walking into Paris the second you enter, and even the diners all seem to be in town from Europe.  The menu is limited, but everything on it is delicious and very reasonable.  Tried the tea, baked eggs, croissant, and friend's waffle.  All were fresh and tasty.  Room is beautiful and its the kind of place you want to linger for hours - we did!

All the way west in the meatpacking district almost to the west side highway, but certainly worth the time it took to walk to the Jane Hotel. I met a friend here on Friday for lunch and we stayed for hours catching up. I am so glad we didn't go somewhere else where we would have been chased out 5 minutes after our plates were cleared.

The cafe was busy, but not packed and there was no wait to sit down. The atmosphere is warm, relaxing and very pretty. You will want to spend time here if you are free, but it seemed like a lot of people stopped in for a quick lunch, either alone or with others. Food was good, but I would have preferred the couscous my friend ordered than what I did (which I have already forgotten).

Will keep this in mind and look forward to returning and ordering based on the other yelp reviews!

YUMM!  Great first date spot or for a simple night out with friends.  Amaazing tiramisu.  Try the Yellowfish tuna ceviche glass noodle dish if you're in the mood for a tasty cold salad.  Dimly lit, pretty ambiance.  This place is actually on the first floor of Jane hotel....how much more unique can you get :)
The reason I didn't give it five stars is only cause the service was $3 tip quality and not $7 if you get my drift.  Friendly waitresses, but not enough service :/
    Bon Apetite!

This reasonably priced cafe is located in the Jane Hotel at the corner of Jane Street and West St/Hudson St.

Directions: Just take the A-C-E to the 14th St. Station or the L Train to the 8th St. stop and walk southwest to the end of Jane Street for about 10 minutes.

The decor reminds me of my mornings at European hotel cafes from my recent travels through Austria and Italy. However, here French food meets Moroccan accents.

When I first viewed the menu, I will be honest and state that I was slightly grossed-out. Who wants to eat couscous for breakfast? Well, I take it ALL back because apparently I do. IT WAS SO GOOD. There was more than enough delicious couscous to share and make sure you try it with the sausage.

We also got an order of the avocado chili toast. While this was absolutely delicious in taste, I was not so keen on the texture. But, it's worth getting an order for the table to experience a different combination of flavors.

The baked eggs were also a winner. I would recommend that you ask for them to be baked soft. It's the only way to go.

Finally, regardless of the time of day, get a special coffee. They are all priced about $2 above a plain coffee, so why not swing for an espresso or cappuccino?

    Worth the trip!

I personally had the Hachi Parmentier and the avocado bread. My girlfriend had the salmon pot pie and the gorgonzola, there was so much cheese that even sharing, there was still some left.

On a Sunday morning before checking out of The Jane and heading back home we had breakfast at Cafe Gitane.

It was one of those relaxed light breakfasts that is perfect on a Sunday morning. I ordered a almond croissant, my favorite and it was SO DELICIOUS and also a fruit salad. This fruit salad was NO JOKE. So much fruit I couldn't even finish it.

My companion had the baked eggs and didn't leave one bite on the plate.

I only minus one star as the staff was a little iffy. Just like they had a rough night before and were still sleeping, nothing awful. Just not the best.

The decor takes you to another place and the menu makes you feel as though you're eating at a true Gypsie's caravan.

    This place is delightful.

Located inside the Jane Hotel, Cafe Gitane is a wonderful brunch spot. The decor is so cute and bright; I love it! I came here with my parents for Sunday brunch and the place was packed. The wait was about 45 minutes, but it wasn't too bad. You can sit inside the lobby of the hotel or talk a quick walk around the Hudson River Park.

Now, on to the food.. we ordered the avocado toast and a few slices of seven grain toast to munch on. The avocado toast was DEE-LICIOUS. What a genius combination of flavors. The avocado was buttery and smooth, the lemon juice was tart and the red pepper flakes rounded out the whole thing. You only get one slice, but it is a hefty slice of seven grain bread with avocado, olive oil, lemon juice and red pepper flakes on top. Get it. You will enjoy it.

I ordered their famous baked eggs (medium) with sausage. It was yummy, though I wish I had ordered them soft. I will be sure to do that next time. The sausages were really good too. They went nicely with the eggs and tomato sauce. My dad ordered the Mediterranean couscous with chicken. I loved the colors of the dish; so vibrant and cheery. I tried a little bit of it and thought it was quite good. Definitely something to try next time. My momma ordered the salmon tartar on a baguette and I tried a piece, but it was not too memorable for me. My momma liked it, but I think there are better things on the menu to order.

Overall, I enjoyed brunch at Cafe Gitane. I can't wait to go back and eat more avocado toast. And feast on the rest of the menu. And try all of their breads. And leave there with a gigantic carb food baby. YES.

Brunch that is in convenient location is always key.  I used to love the Jane Ballroom and Cafe Gitane is the cute little resto tucked in the Jane Hotel.  They have some interesting brunch cocktails- I had a cucumber one that is made with actual cucumber juice.  It was super refreshing.  Their coffee is pretty yummy and helped to wake us up.  The avocado toast is pretty amazing, their sandwiches and eggs are all yummy too and the bf likes it as well.  The only thing is if you are truly hungover the menu might not be suited to making you feel better and might make you more queasy.

    I'm so smitten!!

On that blustery yet cheerful morning, I ate AVOCADO TOAST, the love child of Cafe Gitane! http://www.yelp.com/bi... Built upon seven grain toast, le petit plat wasn't a thin, meager, overly toasted piece of bread. Au contraire! The nutty square was almost an inch thick, with baked oats visible on the crust. Avocado was spread evenly atop the bread, and atop the avocado was glistening olive oil and lemon juice with specks of red chili flakes that contrasted magnificently with the green avocado. Tantalizing? Just wait till you actually EAT it.

There was a crunch! (Can you believe it, a crunch!) upon the first bite into the peripheral crust, followed by a smooth and moist texture of the inner bread. Velvety avocado with hints of citrus then hits your palate, and you are all of a sudden taken to another dimension of breakfast foods. Take a sip of la colombe coffee, and life at that moment is utterly complete.

The baked eggs were marvelous as well! With a choice of soft, medium, or hard, three eggs come with their bright yellow runny yolks and baked in a light tomato sauce.

And for your viewing pleasure, here're the other dishes and refreshments we rejoiced over that splendid morning:

Okay so everyone knows how popular and trendy the Jane Hotel is at night - regular haunt of the young, rich, and beautiful. But what many did not know is that during the daylight hours, it is a casual and charming cafe.

With its funky, Moroccan-inspired decor and larger-than-life windows overlooking the Hudson River, this place feels unique but homey, all at once. The barista recommends "the Avocado Toast and the Couscous with Merguez, with lots of harissa", and although a few of those words were new to me, the whole thing was delicious. To drink? A Moroccan Mary (secret ingredient: an Egyptian blend of ground nuts, spices and sesame seeds) is another must-try house special.

More than anything, it makes me miss the Moroccan/French spot I used to dive into during my high school days in Washington, DC. I think I will have to rekindle the love affair...

The menu was not really exciting. I ate a sandwich of some sort....must not have been memorable because I really can't recall what I ate!

Cafe Gitane at the Jane Hotel is the perfect spot for a casual walk-in dinner on a week night.  Went for the second time the other night for a friends birthday (no reservation) and a large group of us were seated immediately.  The service is generally lackluster, but for some reason it feels appropriate in a French themed restaurant.  The wine and food are well priced AND delicious, and at any given point in the night, you can expect an array of models, hipsters and scruffy haired west villagers parading themselves through the space.

Three stars for the disappointing service, but must try the avocado toast!!

I went for lunch on a weekday. I saw  the couscous on the menu and said outloud to my companions, "Couscous for $11.00,; I can make it for $3."

Needless to say I was convinced to order it sans the additions with the hibiscus drink.

OMG, absolutely delicious especially with a dollop of the harissa hot sauce. My taste buds were transported into delightful tingly dance. What I loved about the Hibiscus drink is that it came unsweetened , therefore one can sweeten it with the simple syrup as desired.

I love the History of The Hotel and now I know where to send visitors when they come knocking at my door.

Tucked away in the Jane Hotel, in the West Village lies Cafe Gitane. If you remember the days of Socialista, this space used to be that.

This is a great escape for a mid-week lunch due to it's relaxed atmosphere. Rarely, have I been here when it's crowded, which is also equally as enjoyable.

My favorite dish (that I can never finish) is the Moroccan Couscous, with Organic Chicken. It's both healthy, filling and tastey! Cafe Gitane is modertaly priced and though it's located in a hotel, it attracts an eclectic West Village crowd.

    * Friendly staff (low snoot factor)
    * Cool location in the Jane Hotel in the west village (hard to find for most)
    * Coopers Ale in bottles (good Aussie beer)
    * Five beautiful arched windows (you could film a movie in here)
    * Eclectic decor including a big alligator on the wall (wth? love that)
    * Jimi Hendrix album collection (and a record player!)
    * Foosball (f-yeah)

Food: I enjoyed my organic chicken satay while my friend devoured her Moroccan couscous. It wasn't amazing but it didn't break the bank, either.

Atmoshere: Relaxed. A place where shiny, happy, beautiful people like to congregate. Media and fashion types.

In summary, I'd definitely hit Cafe Gitane again. For the foosball at the very least.

The original French-Morroccan café  in SoHo continues to attract all sort sof artsy hipsters and fashionistas, and the newer offshoot located in the Jane Hotel (West Village) is equally packed with the same type of crowd.  The food is good, not great, but it's more about the scene or waiting for the Jane Ballroom club to reopen.  Had some avocado toast (yup it's just multigrain toast with avocado on top seasoned with red chili peppers and lemon juice) and marinated beets with cinnamon and vinaigrette -- very simple but satisfactory.  The Moroccan Couscous is a giant tower of couscous with red pepper, raising, hummus, eggplants and delish.

Watermelon mimosas? Avocado toast? Um, hello, the sound of those is amazing, and you're in luck, because they taste even better than they sound.
And you get to enjoy them in an adorable cafe that makes you feel like you've stepped into another world. It makes you want to wear a slinky dress and lounge at the bar with a dirty martini and make eyes at one of the gorgeous waiters. But, you should stuff your face instead because the brunch is amazing.
I opted for the baked eggs with tomato, basil, and cream as my entree, and they were perfect- not too oily, which happens often with baked eggs. I can't remember what anyone else ordered because I was busy dying, but before we placed our orders we were (pretty rudely) staring at other people's plates, trying to figure out what they ordered and salivating at all the options. They probably thought we were tourists, however, because I think we were too busy eating to even talk. It's that good.
I'm starting to drift off into a food coma thinking about it, so we'll stop here.

    Orange blossom waffels..yup!

Went for Sunday brunch and I must say the service and food was great!
We ordered a few things and in less than 12 min in a full house we got everything. Not too many places like that in this city. Quality food here!
