LOVED IT!! It's tough to find great Mexican food in the city. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for so long now, and every time I walk by it the smell of Mexican food takes over and I get jealous of everyone inside eating!
It is really cute inside, very unique, great bar area. We started with margaritas- and these are real margaritas, no fake mixes, you can tell it's pure lime juice, tequila, and whatever else they put in there! The guacamole was made to order, and very tasty (with good tortilla chips, the guac is only as good as the chips you can dip into it!). I got the chipotle-marinated pork tacos-DELISH! The corn tortillas were home-made, such great flavor, and the perfect size portion. My friend go the Enchiladas Suizas, which she enjoyed. We both left the restaurant full, but not overstuffed like I normally am after mexican food. Slightly on the more pricey side, but I think it was worth it.
Will definitely be here again, again, and again! Glad it's only a few blocks away from my apartment. -

Nice view of the Museum from the front window seats. Pricey Mex. that delivers on some fronts other than the frontage facing the Museum. Best buys are the salsas- a trio for $3 plus chips- house made chips for food of this quality is appreciated. Salsas were good though laced any real ZING.
The main on the other hand- salmon w/achiote & bitter orange in a banana leaf w/ chipotle mash for $22 was delicious. Perfect combo of flavors, textures and tastes. Service was a tad pushy and after 5:30 come the carraiges and crying babies- time to flee....Listed in: Comida Mexicana

Two friends and I arrived at Cafe Frida without any reservations at about 5:30 on Saturday. It was Cinco de Mayo and a line formed at the door as soon as we were seated. Our very nice waitress told us we had just under 2 hours to eat before they had to turn over the table for a reservation. That was enough time for us to down our share of the Classic Frida Margarita, rimmed with sea-salt cayenne pepper-smoked paprika. Delicious and potent.
We also ordered the Guacamole, medium to spicy. Though the dish was beautiful with the green and red vibrant colors, it was mild and bland. So the waiter brought us a small bowl of jalapenos on the side. It helped, but the guacamole simply lacked seasoning. Still it didn't stop us from eating the entire bowl.
For my main meal, I asked the waitress for her favorites. She first recommended the Mole Negro de Oaxaca, but since I'm not a huge fan of mole or chicken, I opted for her second favorite dish - the Mixiote de Cordero. This is lamb shank marinated in guajillo sauce, avocado leaf & green olives slow-cooked in parchment paper for 8 hours, served with a grilled corn on the cob, hand-made corn tortillas, and Mexican rice and black beans on the side. Once placed on the table, our waitress expertly rolled the parchment paper around a fork to remove it from the plate.
But truth be told, this dish is more show than palate-satisfying. The rich sauce completely overpowers the lamb which is unfortunate because I'm sure that the fall-off-the-bone meat would have tasted great if even the tiniest bit of its gaminess could have broken thru the sauce. As it was, it merely served to add texture. And much to my disappointment, there was no marrow in the bone. The sides were delicious - the corn on the cob was perhaps the best part of the dish.

I actually didn't think this place was that bad. However my girlfriend didn't have the same food experience as I did. We ordered guacamole as an app. It was great and they make it right there for you. The sangria was also tasty, not to sweet like some places make it. I had the braised boneless short ribs with a corn soufflé. The corn soufflé was AMAZING. Thy alone would bring me back.
Like I said there is a however. My girlfriend got the shredded pork tacos. She said it was like biting into a whole onion. They had garnished the tacos with way to many chopped onions. Then anther bite was met with a huge piece of fat. It also came with a side of rice and beans. They were extremely over cooked. Almost like paste. My girlfriend NEVER send food back so it must have been pretty awful for her to get to that point that she sent it back.
The restaurant was very understanding which is unusual. Most places will argue with you and still charge you for the meal. This place however took it right off our check and was very apologetic. They offered something else in return, but she politely declined.
I would give this place another chance and hopefully convince my better half the same. -

Awesome place. Best Mexican I've had in Manhattan. My only complaint is that the menu is a bit small. Not a whole lot of choices. But what they do have is high quality. Great food and a great atmosphere.

Terrible service, mediocre food, big check. Where is the catch here? This restaurant has sort of a nice ambiance in the back. Not that interesting in the front. The DF mojito and the frozen margaritas were definitely tasty. The salsa sample platter was not that interesting. The quacamole (10 dollars a bowl) had to be sent back to the kitchen because it was not spicy at all, like we requested. Basically, my friend and I had 2 appetizers and 2 main courses. I went for that Mole Negro that I heard others raving about. I was not impressed at all, and neither was my friend that tried a bite. We skipped desserts and still had a 140 dollar bill. Next time we'll go to Rosa Mexicano. Sorry, Frida... But you have to clean up your act and pick it up a notch, because this is NYC and we have the luxury of choice.

The Mole Negro de Oaxaca was a 5 star dish. Fall off the bone tender, great mole with really rich and deep flavors. I could eat that dish every night. The fresh guacamole was good, but nothing awesome. I think the guac at Rosa Mexicana is still better. The mojito there is AMAZING! I don't know what they put in there, I mean a mojito is pretty simple, but they do something special with it. Definitely give it a try. Seating is super tight, like, they have to move tables to the side to you can shimmy into your seat and then they slide the tables back in place. Leave the private conversations for somewhere else if ya know what I mean. All in all, solid spot, I'd definitely add this the the very short list of keepers on the UWS.

After a horrible experience at another restaurant just down the street, were we received no service, my husband and I popped into Cafe Frida for an afternoon cocktail and a snack. We were greeted promptly and with smiles. The bartender Diego was absolutely charming and makes a great margarita. The guacamole out of the kitchen was outstanding. Huge fane! Highly reccomend

Went here for a late Sunday brunch (about 2:30pm) and sat outside in the garden. Service was horrible, but the Garden made up for it! Food was delicious, had chips & guac to start, then Chilaquiles for brunch and a Bloody Mary to top it off.
Everything was great except for the service. Took almost 2 hours for a simple lunch, had to walk inside several times to ask for the waiter. Even though the service was horrible I'll definitely be back on a summer day! -

The garden is nice and the happy hour is a decent deal. In other words, sit outside or come early. This is not the kind of Mexican restaurant where you'll be dreaming about the food weeks later but it's decent. The tacos - especially at happy hour - are good. The drinks and guacamole are VERY overpriced.

My friends stopped in for drinks the other day and told the host that they were having drinks. When I walked in to meet my friends the hostess seemed annoyed that I was there (I got an eye roll and everything). Then they followed me to the table my friends were seated at and told us that it was ok that we sat there but that they had a reservation coming in an hour later. Ok, but you sat us there and we told you we only wanted drinks. We promptly left. No need to be someplace we aren't wanted when restaurants and bars in NYC are a dime a dozen. I will never go back.

New York, NY
The food was good, but I found that it suffered from entree-as-app portion. I'm not a person who needs a family portion for one, but there were four small tacos, a 1/2 cup of rice and a shallow dish of black beans, which was $20.
The service was good, though they brought out a side dish when we were half way through our entree (which in their defense, didn't take long since it was small portions).
Further, there were no chips at the beginning of the meal. Come on, you could comp some chips on a $55+ meal for two (two entrees and a side).
I felt like were paying a location tax rather than for a well composed, thought out meal. -

I live in the Bay Area, and I've been told never to eat Mexican food in NYC. If you do, go to Cafe Frida. The ambiance is nice, dark but lively, and quiet enough to catch up with an old friend. I was impressed with the wine list, and the guacamole was pretty good. My only qualm was that my main dish (lamb) was really heavy and a bit too rich. It could have been less saucy and accented by a vegetable. Overall everything tasted good.
What really sold me was the service. Very friendly and attentive, and all the servers worked together as a high functioning team. We always got what we needed, but I never felt interrupted. -

My mouth danced for joy at this place! I've had Mexican food in New Mexico and AZ (the closest that I've ever been to the Motherland..lol)....so I kinda know a little something about this cuisine.
Today I had a craving for Mexican food but being on the upper west side I was afraid of the lack of good choices until I stopped by Cafe Frida. When I walked in, I felt like I was transported to a Mexican cafe out west but with a NY flair. Loved the haute fuschia and bright-as-can-be orange walls with cool accents of the past sprinkled about the spot.
After being welcomed and seated, I perused the menu and decided on something from the $12.95 lunch special (niiiiiice $$). I started off with guacamole and chips (the guac was off the chain!! OMG...chunky and spicy - the way I like it!). I had the Salmon Tikin - salmon drizzled in achiote sauce with a side of white rice and corn....freakin' delicious! For dessert, I had the Pastel de Tres Leches...yummmmm light and frothy with a side of bananas and strawberries. I immediately went into a complete vegetative state after consuming everything! (The red sangria was the topping on the cake)
Ohhhh My!
Looking forward to coming back again...and again!!!Listed in: Wepa!!!

Super Awesome Food, Super Hot Bartenders (Diego specifically), Super cute decor - YAY!!! Great experience at Cafe Frida! I had the Enchiladas Suiza with a side order of black refried beans - DELISH! Great spot for a first date, the booths in the back of the restaurant or the tables on the second floor are intimate and uber romantic, while the tables lining the front offer spectacular views for people watching. Cafe Frida served up the best, most authentic Mexican food I've had this side of the Mississipi River! The only kinda weird thing is that the menu was separated into three weird blocks...I suppose the first chunk was apps, the second was food you'd expect to see on a Mexican food menu, but the third block was a hodgepodge of seafood and kinda Mexican sounding things. The guacamole was full of fresh flavor and my enchilada's were yummy - we'll definitely be back!

Cafe Frida is a lovely little Mexican Restaurant opposite the Natural History Museum on the UWS. I went with my boyfriend and it's a great little 'date night' restaurant. The atmosphere is lively without being over bearing, the service is quick and friendly and the prices aren't too high (depending on the quality of tequila you want to drink - they do shots for up to $50).
We decided to try a trio of taster salsas to start which were pretty good and left me wanting to try a few others. The list was quite excessive. The menu choices are quite varied too. We decided to share the shredded pork tacos which were delicious and add a few plates from the street food section and all of it lived up to expectation.
The one thing I would say that let this place down slightly were the margheritas. They were nice enough but not the best margheritas I've had. Saying that, I'd still recommend you give this place a try.

Great margaritas, and some of the most delicious tacos I've ever had. I like to go for their happy hour and sit at the bar and just get them a la carte (with a few drinks, of course).

Manhattan, NY
Good service, Great food. Could use some work with lighting, noise, and decor.
The guacamole at the beginning was very good, well presented, and the handmade corn tortilla chips were well cooked and seasoned perfectly. The mojito I had was simple, but well made. The queso fondito clearly had thought and time put into it: was well seasoned, marinated correctly, was correctly portioned for 1, and was presented artfully. The quesadillas had an amazing filling, well cooked components, but secured probably the only big problem - the tortillas were bland and chewy. Although I am not holding them to the same standards of the best tortillas I have ever had, not being able to properly season and cook tortillas for a Mexican restaurant is a major problem. It was even more confusing considering how good their handmade tortilla chips are.
The lighting was very dark and although it probably adds to the "romantic nature" that the restaurant is attempting to produce, the outside lighting ruins that effect and turns it into just being too dark to truly appreciate the plating, presentation, and care presented in the food. Having paper lanterns around is a nice touch, but having live votive candles in them is probably a bad idea (not to mention that they are a fire hazard, and one caught fire about two feet away from me spontaneously). The noise level is very high at 8-10:30 pm on Thursday, but noise can be circumvented by not coming at peak hours.
Overall: great food with the exception of tortillas, would definitely come again on non-peak hours. -

We went here on a busy Saturday night before an event at the museum. I remembered the food and service was good the last time I was here and I was right.
We ordered the guacamole to start and chicken mole for me and my friend ordered the steak. The food was excellent, the service attentive but not hovering. He knew just when we need water and another margarita (a bit pricey but good). So I would have no problems recommending this place to anyone if you are in the area and want Mexican food. -

Food was good but very expensive. They charge you for red salsa (possibly out of a can) to go with your chips. If money is no object to you, then definitely go... The skinny girl margaritas ($13) are very good.

Let me preface this with: I live in the Bay Area, home to some of the best Mexican food, taquerias and margaritas- at some of the cheapest prices possible. Everyone warned me not to eat Mexican food in NY because I would be sorely disappointed.
Yesterday, walking back from the AMNH, we saw this place with $6 happy hour sangria, queso fundido, and we're committed to giving a try.
We were not disappointed. The queso fundido con rajas was muy delicioso! We order our margaritas the legit way: on the rocks with salt. But they do have a "slurpee" version for the gringos. This place is the real deal...well, as close as possible in NY.
Pleasantly surprised by the authenticity, I asked the bartender where the owner was from. She replied "Mexico City". No wonder. It showed. There are just some details that can't be translated...you just know them, or you don't. Cafe Frida knows them. -

My friend and I read all these great reviews on Yelp, so we figured we'd check this place out for some casual Mexican... that was a mistake.
While the service was nice and quick, the food was BAD. I'm not sure why everyone else is raving, perhaps they aren't actually experienced with Mexican food at all, or maybe we went on an off-day, either way, I'm not returning. First of all, the chips seemed stale/not fresh at all (at least the salsa we ordered was good). Then I had some pork tacos as my main course... they were not pleasant, I barely ate them (trust me, I'm a big-eater). We left very disappointed, not good, not worth it, not even appealing decor. -

Sometimes if on the upper west and my desperate for Mexican I go to this place and I always regret it. I've slowly limited my choices down to the one decent thing on the menu: chicken tacos. But compared with other better Mexican spots in town this place is just uninspired, overpriced and tasteless.
Oh, and while sitting in the garden tonight I spent most of the time watching MICE run around the patio. That made the chicken tacos even less appetizing. Suffice to say this is my last visit to Cafe Frida, better to hold out for real Mexican food downtown than settle for overpriced and bland tasting imitaiton. -

Cute Mexican restaurant across the street from the Museum of Natural History. Popped in for lunch quickly, $13 special. The steak was on point, the beans and rice were lacking. Meal was tasty overall. Would definitely comeback here. Although I can imagine it smut get hectic with all the
hungry museum goers and their children. -

I can't say enough good things about going to Cafe Frida. It's in walking distance from my inlaws, the food is fantastic and the margaritas were spectacular. When we're in town, we're there at least 2-3 times.
It's great for date night with my husband, (and a nice long walk afterwards to burn off the tequilla) and a great place for lunch with the kids. (which is why we had the tequilla in the first place) I had the Salmon Tkin-xic which was flavorful, gluten free and just the right amount. It's served in a banana leaf with mashed plantains. So good, I'm hungry again. My husband had Tampiquena with he also enjoyed throughly. Guac is made fresh and is as spicy as you want it. It's easy to just eat that with the margaritas.
For lunch I've had the Jalapena, which is sesame encrusted tuna medalions on a bed of greens and ginger jalepeno dressing. They accomodate busy kids with out a blink of an eye. (Albeit kids in a restuant should have manners and be reasonably behaved)
The place has great ambiance, the food is fresh the staff is incredibly friendly and put up with many questions regarding allergies and intolerances, all with a smile.
Okay, now that I've said all that, you can guess I'll be back.Listed in: Gluten Free Dining

My girlfriend and I stopped by recently. As we were walking down, there seemed to be a dearth of restaurants. Our choices were to turn back and walk uptown or continue and see what we get. And what we got was Frida.
We ordered from their brunch menu. I had eggs with steak, refried beans, guacamole, and a cheese enchilada. The eggs were fine. The steak was good and a very large portion. Beans and guacamole were okay. The food was mediocre - nothing terrible, but nothing great, and at $17, I should have chose something else.
The service was decent. Our waiter asked if we would like any drinks, but their drinks are pricey - $9-$14. At those prices, we could have walked back a few blocks to Calle Ocho for unlimited sangria. When our waiter took our orders, he asked if we would like guacamole but neglected to tell us that it is $11. We were not served water, but a couple who came in after us was... we had to ask for it. Hm. We ordered coffee but they were not generous with refills... we had to ask every time.
The front area where we sat had cheap metal wire chairs that are not very comfortable. Bright colors dominate this restaurant. The music was terrible - it was a mix of Shakira and Middle Eastern music. I did not get a good look at the rest of the restaurant, but there is a set of stairs to a little loft area. The bathrooms are small but worst of all is the tiny hallway to the bathrooms... it made me feel like I was being born again!
I probably will not be back. -

Cafe Frida is AWESOME! We stumbled in there today looking for a quick lunch with our 2 kids and boy were we in for a treat! First of all, the staff couldn't be nicer. The Mexican Fondue was fantastic. The seared tuna over greens with wasabi ginger dressing was great. The braised lamb burrito was wonderful. The fried plantains were wonderful.
We wish there was one on the UES. All in all a great meal. Oh yeah clean bathrooms and super affordable! -

Beechhurst, NY
The overall decor was pretty with its wooden masks and gourd lamps, but they need to change the creepy pictures on the wall.
You have the choice of sitting at tables or at couch-booths. They also have a choice of sitting inside or outside in a covered patio which is intimate with the sidewalk
The food was overpriced with very small portions
Our waitress was not very animated, but the staff as a whole made sure our glasses of water were always full. -
Review from Adam M.
Cafe Frida would get 4 maybe 4.5 stars for just the food and drink, but the ambiance and prices knock it down a notch.
The food was phenomenal. The variety was good, originality high and preparation perfect. If you're a hot sauce fan you have to try the place just for the huge varied selection of homemade salsas. Portions are appropriate. Well, appropriate if you remember what normal portions are. Those used to super-sized everything, especially cheap Mexican, may be disappointed. The drink list has enough unique twists on the traditional to keep you interested and all are well executed but the pours are small. Service was very good and despite being fully booked we were seated within 10 min of our reservation.
The but... Prices are steep, drinks are small, and the room is tight, loud and hot. Hot to the point we almost decided not to stay. And loud to the point normal conversation was impossible. -

Cafe Frida has yet to disappoint me. I have never gone with a reservation but each time the staff is very accommodating and always finds a table quickly.
The food is fabulous and the service efficient and polite. The decor is a bit over the top but that only adds to the sweet charm. -

Bloomfield, NJ
Great first impression of this place. The only thing that makes my rating waver towards 4 stars is the prices, but... I guess everything else won me over. My friends and I went in for a mid-afternoon late lunch. We shared the salsa sampler, which was truly impressive - one was deeply smoky, another creamy with avocado, another tart and sweet from the tomatillo, and the last one fresh and crisp minced tomato, red onion, and hot pepper. I had the sesame-encrusted tuna salad for my entree - so delicious. We had several rounds of drinks, and it added up to be a lot, but I felt in the end that it was worth it. They even made a mango mojito for me, even though it wasn't on the menu, and it was quite good.
Nice, cozy, candlelit atmosphere, and eager, attentive service. Never had a problem getting someone's attention.
If you happen to sit in the front area towards the right, make sure you get a load of the ridiculous penthouse apartment a few buildings down, across from the Natural History Museum. My friends and I couldn't stop ogling their enormous windowed facade and visible ceiling frescoes. The people who live there certainly wouldn't flinch at $11 margaritas... -

Ok so I haven't really wildly experimented with the menu so can't speak to their mole sauce (do they have one?) or fish but can tell you that they make a good margarita & the chips are fresh, light, crisp...perfect. (just add a little salt if your preference)
Ambience has gotten better - well lit (in that it's not too lit!), seats in the upstairs alcove are actually nice and a little more tucked away so out of the hustle bustle that is sometimes the feeling in the main (?) dining area - behind the bar. For some reason the seats up front are awkward and I think they recently changed them during a renovation. Yet still something is off - maybe tables are too high? I don't know & honestly doesn't kill the spot for me.
Service is nice, attentive..food flavorful (love the tacos & tampiquena).
Prices can be a little steep for what you get - particularly margaritas and I think they just raised prices for the tacos (again, yes, I need to vary more with the menu clearly as can't speak to really anything other than 2 dishes!). Minor thing but will mention as it was noticed - the rice/bean side serving is definitely much smaller.
Good idea to make ressies in advance. There can sometimes be a bit of a wait and not much room at the bar to sit out the wait there..
OH - and if it's nice out, worth going up another 15 or so blocks to their Amsterdam location & sitting in the back garden.
