When I'm craving a really good latte, or a blended espresso drink in the middle of the work day I come here. The espresso definitely has a bite to it, as another reviewer alluded to -- it took my delicate palatte a little bit of getting used to. The barista is great -- Vlad. Always a smile on his face, and a nice person to order your drink from. Definitely don't be in a hurry here -- this place is much more enjoyable when you come without counting the seconds between ordering and getting your coffee.

Definitely don't forget cash or your checkbook. Yes, I have written checks for $2.75...shame.

****Update: New owner -- Kathleen. Really nice woman. Renamed the cafe  to Cafe Zoe. Will have to come a couple more times to check out the new menu (food and drinks) and give a well thoughout review.

Love, love, love this place! The coffee is good and the people that work there are super nice and remember your name after a few times! I would much rather drop my cash here than at Starbucks or Peets because it is privately owned.

One day my husband went in and didn't realize they only accept cash and they said he could pay next time we came in. How is that for service and kindness??? Can't find that anywhere else!  If you are in the neighborhood, stop in and get something!

Certainly a neighborhood secret. Shhhhhh.

The staff will remember your name and preferences. Personally, I like my maciatto with just a little mark of foam, not piled high like a dry cap'. After 3 visits, all the staff remembered and I get my mac' the way I like it every time.

The espresso is roasted woody and dark, which I like. It's got a good bite, the way I like it. I order a mocha special for my girlfriend (medium size but one shot) which she loves. Prices are normal, which I would call high -- menlo park, dude.

Did I mention the parking? There's always a spot right out front. It's a neighborhood thing, dude.

Free wifi, comfortable chairs in the back, and an unusually good sandwich menu, which is another secret. They also sell kindereggs at the counter, very rare in the US.

What's not to love? It's a little small and dark, can feel lonely if there's only a few people there, and they're not open late (a huge shame, as they have gelato).

Very quite, cozy neighborhood cafe. Owner is super-enthusiastic and friendly and tries hard to remember how you like your drinks.  Baked goods simple but very fresh, so even the day old items on sale taste better than you get elsewhere.

Avoid 8:30 to 9:00 AM when parents dropping off at the nearby German School swing by for a refueling or informal chat with other parents. As the owner is by himself and hand crafts each drink, service can come to a grinding halt (no pun intended).

A great little cafe serving nice pastries and gelato, as well as drinks. I have only tried their mocha and hot chocolate, but will certainly return for pastries and gelato. Ultra friendly staff and nice cliente. The store front is small and you may miss it driving along Menalto. Prices are not bad  in an expensive neighborhood.

There is one outdoor table but it's on the sidewalk next to a parking spot.

Friendly, good coffee, good prices.  My only complaints are that they don't open quite early enough, and don't take credit cards.  Also, I have to always ask "not too sweet" on my vanilla latte because they like to drown it, but this is a mistake a lot of places make, even Peet's.

Otherwise, this place is great.  It's the only coffee shop I will drink a mocha from.  Most either make it too chocolatey with no coffee taste, or too much coffee without enough chocolate.   The pastries are top-notch (I think they may be from Douce France), and the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive.  And cute, to boot!  This is definitely one of those places you want to keep to yourself, to keep the lines short, etc.  But you also want to tell the world, to make sure they do well!

I discovered this place when we moved to the area about a year and a half ago.  When I recently found the yelp site, I was in two minds about writing a review of 1929 - mostly because I selfishly want this place to be a best kept secret...

Important things first, the coffee:  As someone who does quite a bit of espresso making at home, I was delighted to find that the lattes here are first-rate and consistent too - this, combined with the reasonable prices, makes us regulars.  Food is perfect and appropriate for the size of place:  Anything from fine gelato and yummy pastries, right up to bagels and great, great sandwiches.

Atmos:  Inside there is a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, greatly helped by the nice decor and seating plus the owner's can-do attitude - as someone else here pointed out, although not a big place, they have everything you need, from wi-fi to toddler seats to nice tea and coffee gifts.  You can sit outdoors too - either at the front to soak in the gentle hubbub of residential foot, bike and car traffic or the more peaceful table out the back.

The only thing I wish is that I had more time to frequent the place!

It just changed ownership and is now called Cafe Zoe.  One visible improvement was with flowers on every table, and then they had a choice of two blends of coffee.  I had the French Roast (the other one was a lighter blend called Kenya), and I thought this was better coffee than before (I only come by once in a while, so I can't quite vouch for consistency).

Tucked away in a residential area, this cafe is very calm and quiet.  A good cup of coffee here and some nice lite pastries.  You can also buy a few gifts here for the coffee and tea enthusiast.

The only good thing about this espresso joint is the lovely residential neighborhood around it.
My double espresso tasted like drip coffee that was left on the warming plate all day. The bitter taste in my mouth lasted all the way home, even though I took just one small sip and left the rest on the table.
They don't even have proper espresso cups, but it wouldn't have made any difference if they had.

cute little neighborhood coffee shop.  on my way to thermae, i was starving! stopped in cafe espresso and had a turkey sandwich.  sandwich came with pickles in it and pickles on the side. definitely a plus for me! i love pickles...sweet, sour, dill, gherkins, cornichons; i love 'em all! it came with chips too.  yummy sandwich with the extras that's why i gave them 5 stars.
