Grabbed a coffee and tried the focaccia bread. Coffee was fresh (watched him grind it up) and the focaccia bread had the right amount of sauce and cheese. Quaint, quiet hang-out if you're looking to kill some time and relax.

I live Lakeshore east, and this place is about a 7-8 minute walk from my place. Really good music, great atmosphere and a place I can come by to just unwind on weekends after a long work-week. To top it off, they have a great selection of teas.

At first I didn't like how not-sweet the iced chai was but I reconsidered it's stern virtues and overall, I'll go back.

The second best mocha I had in Chicago.  Not blow-your-mind amazing, but significantly better than Starbucks.  The baked goods selection left something to be desired, but we went back for mochas more than once.

All I do is give good reviews. Here's another one. This is a place I like to frequent because I work in the building, and well, I'm lazy. I'm unhealthily obsessed with iced coffee, and I especially love this place because it is indoors- meaning I can order an iced coffee in -15 degree weather, and it's okay because I just have to walk upstairs to work.

And the iced coffee is good. You know how Starbuck's coffee (iced and hot) always tastes like it's burnt b/c it's so bitter? You don't get that here. Plus they have delicious blueberry scones. And apparently, gelato. I've never tried it, but it's nice to know that your morning coffee place sells italian ice cream, in case you're ever in the mood.

I don't know why but this Cafe Descartes I don't mind visiting (as opposed to the Mich Ave one).

I actually quite like their filled croissants and realized for the first time yesterday that they have pretty decent gelato too!

Scones, I'm less of a fan. Service, I had no problem at all with!

Great location and also aesthetically pleasing. Selection of food was very limited, however, which could explain why it was a little empty for a Friday night. Service was just okay.

This is a really sweet little coffeeshop, and they have gelato too. I like it 'cos it's not a giant chain like FiveBucks, and despite the other review - I thought it had friendly people working there. I once went in here, just for coffee and ended up having a really pleasant chat with a Moroccan guy working here. He was so friendly and cute, it sticks in my mind as a positive experience.

I thought I would give Descartes one more chance.  Reading the other yelp reviews saying that their Chai Latte was good, I decided to order one.  Firstly, the 2 Russian chicks taking my order were bored, looked like they were cooler than thou, and just meh (oh Europeans....)  I've had bad days at work, but I never brushed people off.  I am used to Tazo and Oregon Chai (served at Starbucks and Seattle's Best).  I don' t know what Descartes uses, but it is not good if you like either Tazo or Oregon.  It was overly sweet, an almost artificial vanilla flavor.  No hint of cardamon or cinnamon.  Just weird sugary-ness.  I lifted the lid and found some strange brown powdery stuff floating on top.  Tried diluting it with some hot water, still not palatable.  $4 down the drain.  One star for location and the fact there's no line (now I know why) and one star for the guy at the bar who actually greeted me.
