April 13, 2007 -- Update -- Cafe Debra has changed owners again. I haven't been there yet but I've heard this latest change is for the better. I'll update again with first-hand experience when I've had a chance to visit.
--------
About six months ago, I would have given Cafe Debra four stars, easy. It was a neat little place for commuters to stop in and get their morning latte. On weekends, locals could get a sandwich, visit, and read the Sunday paper.
As T. W. pointed out, they had the best sandwiches. Giant, creatively named, tasty sandwiches. You never left with disappointed taste buds and definitely didn't go hungry.
Unfortunately, "Debra" sold her cafe and it hasn't been the same since. You can still get lattes and sandwiches but they really don't compare -- the charm and character of the place has gone.
One other change worth mentioning: the cafe now has wifi.

Absolutely the best sandwiches in the south end. Tasty combinations all named for different parts of the neighborhood -- i.e. the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich is named for the local elementary school.
The service is good, and the sandwiches are made to order. Great place to meet someone for lunch or treat yourself.
They also serve espresso, shakes and deli salads. Nice fireplace on one end for chilly mornings, and to add to the ambience -- a life size stuffed doll can be found in her latest pose somewhere amongst the tables.
If you are in a huge hurry and want to take it with you -- best to call ahead, as they make each sandwich as they are ordered -- however, they are worth the wait.
Friendly staff, right in downtown Des Moines with a view of the water.
