Free wi-fi at this friendly coffee place on the corner of Bleecker and MacDougal (also on this corner: Caffe del Mare, Le Figaro Cafe). Good coffee and scones. Good people-watching.

Java hounds are buzzing about Cafe Collage in the Village. It's mellow in mood but exacting about its coffee, which comes from the specialty roaster Intelligentsia in Chicago. Open since October, Collage pulls espresso drinks with care and offers an unusual French press option. Choose your beans, which are ground to order, and you'll be given a press and a timer (depress the plunger after four minutes).
There's ample seating, free wi-fi, and croissants, scones, and other baked bites from Balthazar and Brooklyn's Baked.

Loved this spacious cafe where I had an exquisite cappucino and a delicious little pastry from Balthazar.

Finally, a real coffee shop in Manhattan. Being from Seattle I long for the days of chilling in a trendy-independent coffee shop with free wi-fi. This place has superb coffee and the atmosphere rocks. To bad it isn't in my neighborhood but I will travel to hang out here. Hell's Kitchen (my hood) has "Coffee Shop" which is just dreadful and a tiny espresso place with florescent lighting.

This popular corner seems to change hands every year. The last time I was here in the fall of 06 it was a Vietnames noodle place. Now it's an airy cafe with with plenty of tables and chairs for the NYU students to spread out their laptops and papers. They don't exactly have wifi here but you can connect to numerous hubs in the hood. The coffee here is excellent with expresso from Intelligentsia, a green coffee importer and roaster. I like it that they'll do the coffee art on the milk foam. The do it yourself French press option, with a timer, is a unique idea. The music they pump out here is the soft indie type, not so loud that you can't concentrate from reading. They don't seem to mind squatters here, unlike Esperanto up the street. The price of coffee here is very reasonable. The servers are very cool and friendly. I think it's a great addition to the Bleeker Street corridor. Let's hope they last.

Cafe Collage appears to be closed, as of August 21, 2007. The windows had newspapers taped to them.
