With the exception of Wurstkuche in Los Angeles(if that), I've never really had German food in America. I have to say that my virgin experience in Denver was a delightful one. I started off with their special beer that night, which I can't remember the name but it started w/ a V and was even better than the Oktoberfest, which was recommended by our awesome watiress, Joyce. Make sure you ask for her when you dine in.

Appetizers - Wurstteller. Loved the sauerkraut w/ the same bite sizes of the brats
Soup - Split pea soup(aka the "weed" soup)... it was pretty good, however some say it smells like and has the aftertaste of weed. Try it and see for yourself!
Dinner - Kohlrouladen. I absolutely loved the cabbage rolled meat. I was also very pleased w/ my sides of spätzle and red cabbage.

Yes, and for Dessert - Apple Strudel w/ ice cream. Loved how it wasn't too too sweet, and perfect for splitting w/ friends.

It's in the nice downtown location of Denver, and I would definitely go back  to try one of their Schnitzels.

A BIG shoutout to Joyce, our waitress!!!

Lacked the wow factor for international cuisine.  Was in Berlin for 2 days so I am no expert.  I order the:

    Hühnerbrust Berliner Art
Boneless, skinless chicken breast topped with westphalian ham and pears in a brandy sauce with the potato soup, spatzle, and vegetable of the day.

Potato soup was cold and returned.  The brought another bowl out within a minute so I think microwaved.  It was not creamy as described and was bland.

Vegetable of the day - over cooked, mushy, and soaked in butter.  I think for vegetable they need to be cooked fresh and put the butter on the side...the heat will melt it...

Spatzle - Was good!!! hopefully it was home made...I ask the waitress and she said everything was except for the chocolate cake which is understandable.

Chicken - Was a good porition, appeared to be cooked fresh, the ham was ok, but I was looking for the sauce was to subtle and I really didn't notice the pears with the dish.

Atmosphere was not what I remember in Berlin.  There wasn't any music until about 5 minutes before I left.  The drink menu on the table was filthy with crusted food and I have to put this in because something like that accumulates over time and indicates poor sanitation in the restaurant.

For the price of the plate I expect everything from the heat, quality, and flavor to be spot on.  I feel Denverites of so eager for international fare they give good ratings on Yelp...but so far I have not felt the international cuisine meets these indications.

Im going to give this 2 stars as a blended review of food and service.

I had the snitchzel with fried eggs, sauerkraut, and German potatoes. The schnitzel was great and the potatoes were good. I asked for some of the mushroom gravy on the side and it was fantastic with the meal.  The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing but was drenched in their sour cream dressing. Overall , I'd give the food 4 stars.

The service here was a mixed bag. My server was very friendly and helpful, but it took me over 30 min to get my meal. While that would be acceptable if I was with a large group, I was here by myself on a business trip. The only thing that came quickly was my bill when I said I was done. It could be that the kitchen staff was unusually burdened, but it was a turn off.

It was good enough for me to come back and give it another try, but I'd ask them how long it will take before ordering so I can avoid the delay.

Like a lot of food from this region, the food is thick and buttery and rich and so, so delicious. Cafe Berlin is definitely a great choice for ethnic eats. Like other reviewers said, the staff can be pretty stoic but always helpful. I saw the owner (I think it was her, or a manager?) one of the times I was there. She was by the bar, waiting for and then greeting some regulars with reservations - always a good sign!

My date and I started with the Kartoffelpuffer, or potato latkes. Very interesting. It was served with applesauce which I probably never would have thought of but was great! The applesauce helped cut the fat, I felt. I ended up having the Wiener Schnitzel (veal with lemons) and Date had Sauerbraten (beef with gravy... reminded me of pot roast). They were both really delicious but felt so heavy. For our sides we had boiled potatoes, sauerkraut, and red cabbage. The red cabbage here is so good and tasted so well-balanced. That is the only way I can describe it. Perfectly tangy and sweet and it was actually the thing that stuck out the most after I left! I wanted to bring a big jar home!

This is a great place to check out, especially for those who have never had German food and are looking for new ethnic experiences without the heavy spices usually found in other cuisines. Date was Eastern European and apparently this was pretty authentic compared to what you could get in actual Berlin. I will have to come back soon and have that red cabbage again!! I actually had to knock off a star because the food was just a little too heavy for me. So, so tasty but required a long walk after because of all that food!

A German meal. Delicious!   Served German style. Expect 2-3 hours of a relaxing multi course meal. The lemon cake was strongly recommended by our friendly server--- I would go across town just for it. All the food is just great.

What I had?  Jägerschnitzel (Breaded veal cutlet topped with a mushroom cream sauce) with Cream of Potato soup, potato dumplings, and butternut squash

Food review:  Always a pleasant experience at Cafe Berlin and so nice that they are nearby now (work and home  :-)  ).  Started out with a cup of cream of potato soup which was different than I'm used to but still tasty.  The entree was just about to be expected.  Heavy and quite tasty.  Just about any Schnitzel at Cafe Berlin does not disappoint.  Just another satisfying experience at Cafe Berlin.

Oh.. and this is very important.  Cafe Berlin with the new location now has Hacker-Pschorr Dark Hefeweissen on tap which I have yet to see Hacker-Pschorr on tap anywhere in Denver.  Deeeliscious beer

Service?  A little forgetful (if at the bar) but decent

Stopped for lunch.  For starters, they have a full lineup of Paulaner beers.  Doppelbock on tap!  Plus a good selection of schnapps.

Had currywurst, spaetzle, and sauerkraut. plus salad.  The menu seems a pretty solid presentation of German fare.  Not too spicy, a tendency toward sweet, fried and heavy to sop up that tasty beer.   Strudel and cake for dessert.  Marlene the owner/manager is really great in that typically reserved, yet amiable, continental way.

I was the only one in the place, except for some of the crew getting their fortification for what was hopefully a busy night, but as I was leaving a group of late twenty-something ladies came in with a reservation.  It would be great if they offered a Friday happy hour with accordion, tuba/trombone, and maybe guitar; maybe just accordion.

A hidden gem on the 16th St Mall!  A place to consider if you like the Cheeky Monk, except not open as late.

I have enjoyed Cafe Berlin for years. The food is good especially the schnitzel with the sweet cream sauce but several occurrences of bad service have left a bad taste in our mouths.  One evening it was so hot in the restaurant that we were sweating and they made no attempt to fix it.  They also seem to be out or to go containers regularly.  All of these things are fine except the woman that manages the place is snotty, rude and unfriendly when you bring them to her attention. It's unfortunate because the place would be so wonderful otherwise.

Had lunch here today, I've never had authentic German food and Cafe Berlin "seems" to offer it.  The staff seemed to be largely German speaking.

I had the Kohlrouladen, (meat-stuffed cabbage with gravy) and it was really good.  The cabbage-meat blend was light and neither was overpowering of the other, same with the meat gravy that topped it.  They offer several sides, I had potatoes and sauerkraut.  The sauerkraut was... not what I expected.  Is traditional German sauerkraut cooked in butter?  The variety I had at Cafe Berlin was!  I just didn't like it.  The heavy butter made it too rich and overpowered the pickled flavor of the sauerkraut.  Unfortunately, the sauerkraut is what left the lasting impression with me.  I had the "oooooh, too rich with butter" feeling rolling in my tummy several hours after eating.  I don't really enjoy heavy cream, buttery-rich foods.  If you do, it may be for you.

I tried a little bit of my friend's Pilzekotelett, (fried shiitake mushrooms), and thought it tasted good.

The apple strudel was delicious and so was the after-lunch coffee.

I think they have several German-style beers on tap, I didn't try any so maybe they were German-American copies of German beers?

The art on the wall was kind of cool, cafe-style impressionist intermixed with some German movie posters (including Metropolis!)

If you are down town and are looking for a different place to eat, I would say give it a try.  Personally, I'm glad I gave it a try, but will not be adding it to my "must-go-back" list.

The Schnitzel was decent and the Spätzle was good. I set out on the patio in the front which was nice on a summer day. The location isn't great even though its downtown. Over all it was ok, although I didn't get a particularly warm reception when I came in. Its probably my least favorite German Restaurant in Denver but I would give it another chance.

Even though they moved to 16th Street Mall, I'm still a BIG fan of this restaurant. My husband and I came here last night around 7:30pm. It didn't seem crowded though and I wondered if the move caused the decrease of customers. If it did, it's a shame because the food didn't disappoint us again.

My husband ordered the Paprikaschnitzel which was so yummy. It came with a soup (white bean with peas) which he absolutely enjoyed. He also chose the red cabbage and the German potatoes for his sides. I ordered the Halbe Ente (One half semi-boneless duck roasted with thyme, served with a plum sauce). It came with a tomato salad (yummy!). The tomatoes definitely had been sitting in red vinegar with some parsley, pepper, and red onion. There are some other ingredients in it, but I couldn't tell. I couldn't stop eating it when it arrived. I chose the sauerkraut and potato dumplings for my sides. My all-time favorite sides are the sauerkraut and red cabbage.

Last night was an interesting evening. After we ordered, the fire alarm started going off. They apologized to all the tables and some people even decided to go outside for a bit because it was so loud. The waiters started passing out free shots of peach schnapps to apologize for the inconvenience. We soon learned that someone had pulled a fire alarm across the street at Payless, so all the fire alarms in the surrounding buildings go off as well.

Despite the hiccup with the fire alarm,  the service was great and our waiter was really friendly.  We will definitely take friends here when they come to Denver to visit.

I'm updating my review to give Cafe Berlin 5 stars.  It's really excellent!

My new favorite is the Pilzekotelett, which are mushroom cutlets, topped with a rich, brown gravy.  Be aware, Vegetarians, the gravy does have meat in it.  But that's just fine with me.  This dish is so rich and hearty!

I also had the tomato salad (Tomatensalat), which is made of tomatoes and a bit of chopped onion soaked in a vinaigrette.  Such a lovely summer dish.  It's so simple, but I can never get my tomato salad to taste like that at home.  The creamy cucumber salad (Gurkensalat) is still my favorite, but I did really like the tomato salad, too.

Great job, Cafe Berlin!  So happy to have you so near!  I just wish you would have some pork or chicken schnitzel; I don't eat veal.  But keep doing what you're doing!

coming from a huge German family i was excited to try this place out - and i can honestly say i was not let down!! food is EXCELLENT - ok my grandma's is better but of course it is - the service was awesome, the restaurant needed some work but decor is decor.

must get: apple strudel and a liter of beer

suggestion: go for lunch, food is just as good and almost as plentiful but half the cost - although dinner wasn't bad at $62 + tip for two of us...which included two liter beers, food and dessert

The food here was very tasty.  I can't speak to the authenticity too much as I've only spent a little time in Germany but it's definitely hearty.  The bratwurst plate is probably the staple and first thing you should try.  With sauerkraut and mustard it's more than satisfying.

Unfortunately this restaurant's setting seems like a complete afterthought.  First and foremost, the acoustics make it loud as hell in the dining area.  It's ok for groups having lively conversation but forget a conversation at a reasonable level.  The rest is relatively minor but the decor is incohesive and uninspiring.

It's worth a visit for the food but don't expect much beyond that.

Too bad I ate here during my last day in Denver.  I wanted to go back for another meal.

The restaurant is tucked away on the second floor of some random building on 16th street mall.  It's pretty quiet, dimmed; nice place to eat at.  I was skeptical at first because I thought all they'd serve is bratwurst.

Our waiter was this stone cold looking German dude, but he was extremely helpful with the menu and very friendly.  I ordered the Forelle mit Kapern, which is Pan fried red ruby trout topped with a white wine caper sauce.  The dish came with soup of the day (I had creamy mushroom) and two sides (I ordered sauerkraut and German fried potatoes).

The bread that they served before the meal was cold but at least it was fresh bread.  The creamy mushroom soup on the other hand, is to die for.  It has a dark rich brown color, and was so full of flavors that really brought out the taste of the mushrooms; nothing like the kind they serve at Italian restaurants.  I think that could've been my main dish, because it was THAT good.  The trout came out on the same plate as the sides.  The sauerkraut was pretty average, sweet and sour but not overwhelming.  The fried potatoes was a bit dry and needed more gravy.  The trout was cooked perfectly.  The way that they seasoned and cooked the fish made it taste really light, which left me feeling a little hungry, but overall it had a nice texture and flavor to it.  However, I'm not sure if I would order it again.

To sum up, I had a wonderful experience at Cafe Berlin, would definitely go back again to try the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu, which is veal stuffed with ham and cheese.

If you're not in the mood for eating, they also have a bar.  They have all kinds of German beer and Schnap.  Too bad I don't know how to order, since its all in German!

Every time Cafe Berlin moves it loses some of its charm and it lost much in this last one.  I loved it most when it was on 17th, that's where it belonged and it was a gem.  When it moved to 14th, they kept the idea of having a unique, intimate layout with multi-level seating with some modest seperators and a quaint bar as the focal point, but it was in a more undesirable area.  Now it's on the 16th street mall and while I'm happy it's still open, I'm just hoping for the next move!  A restaurant like this doesn't belong towards the upper part of the mall amongst all the scamps crawling around there.  Moreover, almost all was lost on the inside for now it's just one big room.  The bar is longer and bigger and ok, I guess, except that it has a long view of the utilitarian corridor to the kitchen and storage.  Not much decor, no plants to speak of and it badly needs something to dress it up.

Still, I enjoy the food because it's different and hard to find anywhere in Denver.  I went there for a basic lunch in mid-afternoon last Friday and sat at the bar.  I had the wiener schnitzel with spaetzle and red cabbage, their tomato salad to start and a med. Paulaner Oktoberfest.  The tomato salad was a nice way to begin a gustatory adventure, albeit only your basic grocery store tomatoes, with a vinegary herbal oil.  My favorite thing about the entree was the red cabbage.  I never would have thought of it had I not had it here before but it's perfect, again with some vinegar involved but in correct portion, it appeared to me as very fresh and well prepared.  The spaeztle is drizzled in gravy and it's what the mouth desires in-between bites of the schnitzel which was all right, I recall being much more pleased by the dinner item jager schnitzel many years ago, but this is just lunch.

And also from many years ago, I remember the cheese plate as a starter and asked my waiter about it who believes it to be even better than before which is hard for me to believe because it was remarkable and heavenly the one time I had it on 17th St.

The staff are great.  My waiter, fluent in German or close to it, was happy to engage in meaningful conversation as he gave me a suitable education about living in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.  I garnered much from him.  The bartender Ron is a friendly man and he dresses smartly, in the manner that makes you feel that this is how bar service was generations ago, taken with greater care and a higher level of sophistication.  The German woman who first greeted me was amicable and interesting.  There's also a beautiful younger gal involved who possesses a natural European chic appeal that should jostle the most confident and temperate of men!

Cafe Berlin is an experience worth trying because there's practically nothing else like it in Denver.  Get the cheese plate to start and enjoy the works of the affable, learned staff.

This place is wonderful! Everything here was perfect:

    - Our waiter (John?) was incredibly nice, warm-spirited and hilarious (we were in from out of town and asked for some hiking advice, and got some great tips - thanks!), the kind of person who makes me want to move to Denver and make friends with nice Denverites and take them hiking in the mountains

    - All the food was incredible. We tried the duck, sausage appetizer, Schnitzel, split pea soup - all of it so good. Oh and their Spaetzle is semi-crispy, exactly as it should be.

    - The interior was cool, unexpectedly light and modern for a German restaurant

    - Not super cheap, but the portions are huge (entrees come with two sides and a soup or salad - get the soup!), so it's worth it.

I'm never sure how to handle ratings on a place like this so I tend to rate up if it checks all the boxes. Great food. Check. Friendly staff. Check. Fair prices. Check. Ate so much I could barely role 2 blocks to my hotel. BONUS. Look, this is not fine dining. If you need to impress a date on style and how much you spend, well, sorry. This is just plain fantastic German food, at a good price, served by some fantastic folks. I had veal and I am a bad person. I can live with it. If you can't, they have lots of other options, including a vegetarian version. Eat here and expand your world.

Pretty decent place. I sat at the bar and the service was fine. Had the Wiener Schnitzel with sides of spätzle and red cabbage. Not the best of any of those items I've had in the states but certainly up to par. I was somewhat disappointed by the beer selection. It's enough to get by, but they didn't have any of my favorite German beers.

I was in Denver on business and yelped for a good dinner spot.  A highly rated German restaurant -- that doesn't come up too often.

As a student in Europe, I don't remember the food I had in Germany tasting this good.  I went for the traditional -- Wiener shnitzel, red cabbage, boiled potatoes with a light gravy.  Fantastic!

A whole slate of Paulaner beer on tap -- the Oktoberfest was tasty.  The owner comped me a shot of apple schnapps -- another sensory revelation.

I'll be going back on my next visit to Denver to continue my German culinary education.

I enjoyed cafe berlin, our waitress was wearing devil horns very much in keeping with the Halloween season. I had the mushroom spatzle noodles, they certainly weren't the best i've had but they went down just fine. We also ordered the cheese platter which was pretty standard. This definitely sits at a 3 star rating with me, the decor was simple. I imagine is a good place for a no fuss quick lunch. Prices were fair but I don't know if i'll be back here again in a hurry.

Finally got around to trying the Cafe Berlin. I got hooked on weiner schnitzel in Holland and find it one of the best reasons to visit Germany. We dropped in on a Friday night. For some reason they felt the need to ask if we had a reservation, then play the game of, "you are in luck, we had a cancellation," even though at least a third of the tables were empty. That aside, everyone was very friendly, our server in particular was a delight. She was informative about the menu, the beer and just so nice and funny we wanted to ask her to join us for dinner.

We were there for the schnitzel and it did not disappoint. Everyone cleaned their plate and agreed we can't wait to return, there is much left to sample.

It is a bit isolated from the rest of downtown, but worth tracking down.

People in Denver. I have 2 words for your Oktoberfest: Cafe Berlin.

The food rivals what I had throughout Germany. The
white bean soup, cucumber salat, jaegerschnitzel, rotkhol, spaetzle, sauerkraut and German fried potatoes were absolutely delicious. They offer a Paulaner beer flight, and the season Oktoberfest beer, Weisen, was delicious. They have a selection of wines and schnapps, and the complimentary Apfelkorn was a wonderful end to our meal.

Service, in the form of the lovely Lucy, was superb, and the bartender I spoke with on the phone to make my reservation was the most pleasant restaurant person I have ever spoken with.

We are in Denver for a week for work and plan to return to Cafe Berlin before we leave.

    Sehr gut!!

The food is very good. We have eaten there 3 times without a bad meal. My grandmother was very German so they had high bar to get over,. The Sauerbraten was excellent. The Rouladen was also excellent. My wife loved the duck, says as good as her father made in Ukraine. The service is excellent and attentive without hoovering.

On 14th parking was good. I do not know about new location on Champa. The wine and beer list was more than adequate and interesting.

The portions were excellent. We would recommend their food. Dress is casual and many customers seem to be frequent visitors. With move can not say much about the new location.

Service was slow. Not the best German food I had. The thing that made me lose my appetite was starting out with the Bratwurst Plate, maybe it was just my table, but it was served already cut up!!! Is it leftovers from people's plates that you retossed and served or what? How am i suppose to tell 3 different types of Brats when you cut it all up and pan sear it?! WHO DOES THAT!!? I asked the waitress why it was cut up already, do you always serve it like this...I couldn't hear what she said, she mumbled and trailed off and said something about 3 types of Brats, so I said how can I tell, I only see two different colors on there...red and brown...she explained one has a slightly darker color....WTF!?! (see attached photo) I don't look German, doesn't mean I'm stupid and you can dish anything out on the table and think I won't notice.  At the end, she didn't charge me for 3 beers which balances out the platter....so something is really fishy about this.... I'll pass....

If I lived closer, I might be tempted to eat here every day.  I've spent a lot of time in Germany and this place is definitely a little slice of Germany in Denver.  Everything I've had has been tasty.  I especially like the kartoffelpuffer (complete with sour cream and applesauce) and the rouladen.  They even have gluhwein at Christmastime.

Dinner service is fantastic and friendly.  Lunch service can be slow at times (and the waiters seem a bit frazzled), but it's worth it because the food is fantastic.

    LOVE this place!

Informal setting but clean, as compared to most hole-in-the-wall places.  We were quickly seated, despite them being very busy.  Their service is okay, considering they were slightly understaffed, but the food was absolutely great.  Schnitzel à la Holstein with German potatoes was to die for.  Had a bottle of German lager that was delicious as well.  The prices are a little high, compared with the informality of the setting, but not exorbitant.  I will definitely go back, next time I'm in Denver.

Better than your German grandmother can do.

I might be a little biased here. I absolutely love German food. Everything from sauerkraut to weinersnitchel. Cafe Berlin doesn't disappoint. Authentic German menu, friendly service, hearty portions, reasonable prices and a great selection of Paulaner beers on tap (you can order 1/4, 1/2 and full liters!). I recommend the sauerbraten and potato dumplings with a 1/2 liter of Oktoberfest.

    Go to here.

    BEST GERMAN FOOD!

Little hole in the wall place that you would not notice from the outside, but I was blown away!!!

Split the sausage sampler and I'm not a fan of sauerkraut but this was amazing! (as was the 3 different kinds of sausage)

Had a snitchel (sp?) in a cream sauce.... every bite was amazing! The green beans and the potatoes (German style) were fantastic as well!

    WILL BE  BACK!

This place is awesome! Best German food joint that I've found in the town! And of course, the beer is excellent! Who can beat a full sized liter availability of a full line of Paulaner?

I went here two days in a row, and it was equally as pleasing both times. If you can repeat being impressed twice in two days, how amazing is that?!?

The first night we started with a sausage sampler on sauerkraut, and the sausages were GREAT! The thing I was even more impressed with was the sauerkraut. It was so sweet and delicious even my wife, who hates sauerkraut, loved eating it.

I had the jagerschnitzel for dinner with potato dumplings, more sauerkraut, and the cream of mushroom soup. Each item was equally as impressive and delicious as the previous.

Secondly, I had sauerbraten, more sauerkraut, and green beans. Everything has it's own unique flavor, and it's nothing short of the best German food that I've ever come across anywhere in Colorado.

This place is very hard to see, but the parking is very readily available. My only recommendation is call if you're heading in late. Sometimes the foot traffic is very slow here, so I've seen them close down the kitchen up to an hour before regular posted hours.

The service here is also great. The main boss lady is hilarious, and she will mess with you if you come separately from the rest of your party. She's pretty hilarious.

I've been wanting to go to this place for some time now, and finally I got there while my mother was visiting this weekend.
I had the Jagerschnitzel and she had the rouladen.  Mine was really good, hers was just OK, we both agreed her version is much better.  I've had both dishes elsewhere including Germany and I think they are missing something here.   Usually rouladen is served with a small crispy gerkin in the middle, these had big saugy pickles, it didn't quite match up, also the beef wasn't very tender.  Their saurkraut is great, cooked in beer I'm guessing because when I cook mine in beer it tastes and looks the same.  i definitley wanna go back and try the different kinds of schnitzel and the potato dumplings.  And as usual, very disappointed that this and no other German restaurants in Denver serve schweinehaxe.

I'm suprised by all the good/great reviews.  Especially the ones that mention the 'delicious' food!

My husband and I went here for dinner.  He has worked at a German restaurant before, and we both really enjoy German cuisine.

Everything besides the food was 'fine'.  Service was good, but the place was nearly empty.

It was the food that REALLY disappointed us and soured us on the whole experience.

We started with salads.  My husband couldn't even eat his because he hated the dressing.  I had the cucumber salad, which was so soaked with some sort of dill/yogurt dressing, it could have been a soup!  It was alright, nothing to write home about.

Okay, we had high hopes for our entrees.  I ordered a dish described as 'two pork chops with horseradish sauce', and my husband got the sauerbraten.  I was hoping for some tender, juicy chops, and as soon as the plates arrived, I knew I would be disappointed.  The pork looked dry and chewy.

After the first few bites, we both agreed, disappointedly, that the food tasted like bad elementary school cafeteria food.  We exchanged bites, and sadly, didn't find each other's meals any more palatable.

His sauerbraten tasted like a reheated frozen salisbury steak.  The sauce was completely bland.  Still, it was much easier to eat than my pork chops, which were SO overcooked, they tasted like a chewier Canadian bacon.  I needed gobs of the horseradish sauce just to even get the food down.  Since hubby's meal wasn't much better, I decided it wasn't worth sending the food back to try something else.  I ate my nearly inedible food, but my jaw was literally sore after the meal.  Our sides- spaetzl and potato dumplings- were very bland.  The whole plate required tons of salt and pepper.

I feel like the Colorado culinary scene is really blossoming right now.  Tons of restaurants are using top quality fresh ingredients, creative techniques and preparations, and creating flavorful and interesting dishes.  I'm just not sure how a restaurant like this can survive with food reminiscent of what I ate (and hated) in my primary school cafeteria.

We left feeling completely ripped off.  We wanted our money and time back.  If you're considering trying Cafe Berlin, I'd say "skip it".

    A FABULOUS date night!!!
The night started with a bit of confusion about how to get through the front door.  I called the restaurant from the stair well, and the owner greeted us at the back entrance and showed us through the kitchen.  The kitchen was very clean and smelled awesome.
Unfortunately the restaurant was completely booked and we didn't have reservations, but the owner made us our own private special table and we were waited on by the bartender.  Wonderful service, wonderful food, wonderful beer.  Just an amazing night, we will go back soon (this time through the front door with a reservation). :)

I gave them 5 stars in my review of 3/27/2008 below. Today we went to dine at their new location. Did they replace their cooks with the move? The food was bland, the cucumbers in the salad looked like they sat sliced in a refrigerator for a couple of days. The bread, which used to be so good here, was dry. I couldn't finish my schnitzel, it was tasteless and dry, especially the batter. We waited for them to open up again and now were so disappointed; probably won't come again. Oh, and the decor is awful.

It was my first time trying German food, loved the appetizers...Spatzel was great! Beer sampler was also good if you don't know what kind of beer you like. I think i still don't remember which beer i liked. I had the Pork chop baked, i think maybe i would've liked the wienersnitzel better. it looked better anyway. Had a great experience first time eating German food, will definitely come back.

I had a really delicious lunch here the other day and I'm glad this restaurant is now downtown. I'll be back! I had a perfectly smoked bratwurst, super creamy sour cream and dill cucumber salad, a hearty bread basket with butter, tender spätzle with a luscious brown gravy and brussels sprouts for barely over $8. It was a huge amount of food and I took a few bites home to eat later. Other than those few bites, I stuffed myself. The brat was spicy, smoky and paired perfectly with the mustard served on the side. I want to come back to try the mushroom cutlets, the pan fried chicken with herbs and ruby red trout. Those dishes are all under $9 on the lunch menu and come with a huge list of side dishes/salads - crazy! I wish they had a chicken schnitzel dish because I am not a veal fan, but I will take my German-bred and German-food-loving family here because they can take down some veal schnitzel. Service was incredibly friendly. Great beer list including many hard to find varieties of Paulaner and a big selection of schnapps and fruit flavored brandies.

Just had lunch.  I'm still full from the Pan fried pork chops with apples, green beans with bacon and fried potatoes.  I also got the fruit salad, which I was happy to notice was cut by hand from fresh fruit. (all for around $10)

The service was great, the food was great.  I can't wait to go back and get the Bratwurst or schnitzel.

    And German beer... tasty.

I'm home!  Oh man, this place is just stellar.  I took my mother here when she was in town and we both LOVED it.  We both lived in Germany for about 8 years and this place reminded us so much of Germany.

I spent my formative years in Germany and REALLY miss it, so finding a place like this is such a special treat for me.

The staff is authentically German -- I even got to use my rusty German on them, which was great!  The wine selection is terrific, the food is SO YUMMY.  And the decor -- God, so German.

Loved the cheese plate especially.  I would've been happy with that on its own paired with a glass of Riesling (mmMmm Mosel wein).

    HIGHLY recommend Cafe Berlin.
