I am giving this place 5 stars because I genuinely enjoyed our experience here. And it's not just because of the cute french waiters. Okay, maybe it is a little.
But the food was good. There were definitely dishes that were better than others. I need to stop waiting so long between eating and reviewing. I've forgotten all the dishes and what i thought. I just know that we ordered four things. oh my, i tried to look up a menu, which is not online!, and came across a pic of the champagne crusted halibut. I remember ordering this and it was a huge hit.
Hold on. Just let me remember it for a second. thin crust and tender fish. mmm... perfectly seasoned. perfectly cooked. Melts in your mouth. wait. wait.
okay.
Better.
anyway, it's good. go there.
I simply LOVE this restaurant. Being broke and not traveling to Europe is a total bummer and well, I get verklempt when I walk into Cafe Beaujolais. I can close my eyes and just imagine that I am in France hanging out with friends and eating food which is very rich and delicious.
The service? I absolutely adore all of them! It's all French all the time here... (perhaps there's a little Spanish thrown in back in the kitchen), and that's a great thing. The staff is incredibly friendly without crossing the "line"... I almost feel like they play a part in each tables conversation; just by planting a tiny little seed of a topic. They are not into a high turnover here. You may sit and listen to the (cliché, yet soothing) French tunes, and chit-chat till your are socially content.
Starter of choice: I cannot resist the French Onion Soup here... though next time, I will because I really must leave room for desert!
I have had an incredible pork dish here and last night, I ordered the special. Oh boy - what a SPECIAL it was. Who doesn't love puff pastry stuffed with anything? In this case, it was a chicken breast (cooked to perfection) and spinach. I can't remember what the sauce was - plum? or berry? Needless to say, the layers of flavor were incredible!
My husband went for the Peppered Steak. It was magically infused with rosemary... and the sauce? I still wish that I had more room in my tummy for additional bread dipping. Of course, both were served with au gratin style potatoes. HEAVEN.
The evening was topped off with a courtesy sipper of desert wine. It was like putting the bow on a perfectly wrapped present.
THEN: I fell out of my chair (yeah, I really did! I went to lean on the edge of the seat and missed. How often does a dining experience do that for ya?!), and we needed to "walk it off" to avoid severe food coma.
One thing: I wish that they had a few more price point wines. Once the poor days are over, I am certain that I will eat there more often! The ole man was claiming "at least once a week!" We'd get fat for sure. Did I mention that I LOVE the staff here? Please go see them. You will too.
I came here last week for a girlfriend's birthday so a party of 11 girls (BTW - women get great service here!) We sat outside to wait for a table and arrived at 7:45pm and got sat about 40 minutes later.
Upon 5 mins of arrival, a gracious and hunky waiter who resembled Hugh Jackman greeted us outside with his lovely French accent and took some drink orders. As i was yelping the reviews while waiting for a table, i proceeded to tell the waiter that this place was known as the "Thunder Down Under The Eiffel Tower" and all the girls starting laughing hysterically. It could'nt have been put in better words! He played along and i just remember laughing and flirting with him the whole night...it was fun, crazy, exciting and memorable!
Best: Hot servers, 2 free bottles of wine, free creme brulee dessert followed by a birthday song sung in French by the whole staff, the hunky owner (JC) who resembles Ricky Martin from certain angles and the food is fantastic!
Worst: This one waiter who was very grungy looking and very short with us, i think he hated us probably b/c we kept we flirting with our main waiter (Hugh Jackman) and didnt give him the time of day. He rolled his eyes at us and even scolded us when our food came out and some of the girls didnt claim their meals due to incorrect side dishes(which wasnt our fault.) He finally cracked a smile by the end of the night.
Parking also sucks, we circled 2 times to find something on the street and thats being lucky! Some of our friends couldnt see the restaurant and circled 5 times or more. Its next to a Thai Restaurant....it truely is a "hidden" gem.
Here's my thought about some of the dishes i tried:
1. Halibut - This was my dish and the halibut is parmesan crusted served in a wine butter sauce (which pretty much tasted like a rich alfredo sauce to me but i'm not complaining), i subbed my mashed for highly recommended gratin potatoes (they were to die for!!) The halibut was extremely tender, moist and flaky! It was served with one carrot and 2 baby squashes/zucchini (I'm not sure what it was actually, but it was an absolute joy to eat!) I took the Yelper's advice and nixed the orange peels that come on top of the halibut. This dish was dreamy, creamy and gave me tears of joy! Again, get the gratin potatoes! It's a must!!!
2) Rack of Lamb - I dont like lamb, never did and i would never order it but this lamb awesome. It was not gamey at all and had the perfect outside crunch followed by decadent morsels of meat to follow.
3) Steak w/peppercorn- It came in a delicious sauce and my friend got it med well, i prefer medium, but it was very delicious!
4) Creme Brulee- I usually dont care for it because its hard to get the custard to the right consistency but they make it perfect here! It wasn't too sweet and it was carmelized to perfection.
We each paid $35 a person excluding the birthday girl. The night was extremely memorable and i had so much fun. This is definitely a place to bring a bunch of girlfriends to as you will be treated like royalty here - the waiters are eager to please and flirt!! I can't remember the last time i had so much fun and so much inter"action" with the staff. We even got to talk with their hunky ex co-worker who happened to be there for drinks. Matthieu was HOT!
I would love to have my bachelorette party dinner here or just a fun girls night out. I do plan on trying the highly recommended duck next time, maybe i will bring my boyfriend or do a double date. I love you Cafe Beaujolais....why must you taunt us with your sexy accents and delicious food? Why?!
Thank you YELP for inticing me to order the Gratin Potatoes :)
This place is definitely a hidden gem.
My girlfriend found this place on Yelp so we went there this past weekend. I am in love with all things French so I was very excited to see how this meal stacked up.
First off, the decor is great. It's quiet enough to talk, but not stuffy. This place feels like you're eating in a bistro in Paris. All the servers speak French, and the owner was amazingly gracious and friendly.
We started off with the escargot. It was delicious and piping hot. For entrees I had the filet steak flambe and my girlfriend had the halibut with lemon butter sauce. Our food was cooked perfectly. The owner also helped us pair the perfect wine with our meal.
Overall, this was a perfect dining experience. Friendly service, great food and wine, great ambiance. I'm a fan!
What happened???? I suggested this restaurant for a Saturday night dinner with 3 other couples thinking it would be a sure thing. The escargots were consistently good, but I ventured from my usual filet mignon or duck and went for the steak frites and what a disappointment! Not only was my steak cold, but it was also bland. Boooo!!!! I hope this was just a fluke.

Just enjoyed another lovely evening at Cafe Beaujolais. It's still all that and then some! The… Read more »
While this place doesn't take reservations, my boyfriend and I came in on a Friday night around 7 and were seated quickly. This is a cute place with "French" ad art on the wall and all the waiters have French accents which you may find charming, off-putting, or simply hard to understand (like my bf did lol). I had no problem understanding our waiter but I work with a French colleague everyday so accents don't really phase me.
The food was (mostly) great. We had the escargot as a starter which were AMAZING! I've had them in both other places in the US and France and these impressed me. The bread on the side was a little disappointing - for a restaurant that is supposed to be French, it was just bread, nothing special. However, it was great to sop up the butter escargot sauce (which I'm sure is probably a big no-no in French customs). Anyway, we also got the prosciutto salad which was good.
For the entrees, my boyfriend got the duck and I got the lamb. I was a bit disappointed with presentation - both of our plates came out looking exactly the same except different meats (which were moderately-sized portions) and made me think of food at a wedding. Everything was very tasty and well cooked - my boyfriend commented more than once on how good the duck was. My only complaint about the lamb was that it had some kind of breading on it like a pork chop (never had it like that before) which was just all soggy from the sauce on the plate. Good flavor, ehhh texture. The potatoes au gratin on the side were very tasty though.
For dessert we got the creme caramel which we both really enjoyed. The waiter even took note of me mentioning in passing that it was my bf's birthday and brought it out with a candle in it. When the check came, I thought it was reasonable for the wine and amount of food we ordered. We went home absolutely stuffed. In the end, while I was satisfied but not completely blown away, my boyfriend told me he really enjoyed his food and since it was his birthday, that's what mattered to me. I'd check this place out again, but probably only for a special occasion since it's on the pricey side for a normal dinner.
Nice little neighborhood place for French food. Intimate setting, great decor and friendly service.
So on a Sunday night, my friend and I are deciding on a restaurant where we could have a nice place to chill and at the same time some good food...we decided to try Cafe Beaujolais since it's pretty close to Pasadena (6 miles drive)...
We had french onion soup for a starter, it was okay, liked the crust on the top...for the entrees, i had the halibut and my friend got the beef flambe..both are good..i really like the gratine potatoes and the seasoned string beans they put for the sides...and last but not least, creme brulee for dessert, it's good but again nothing really special..
I have to say the food is good and tasty but nothing fancy...it's more to home made kind of taste...
the atmosphere..love it..not too crowded...small but cozy..
We were actually the last customers but the waiter did not even rush us (they close at 9pm on Sunday, we were there til almost 10pm)...i will have to say two thumbs up for the service aloneee!!!very pleasant..very politee..very helpful..very attentive andd love love love the guy's french accent :)
Overall, it was a great experience..but me and my friend particularly agreed that we would eventually go back just for the great service!!!
We celebrated my dads birthday here last Saturday. The restaurant was not as crowded when we got there. But around 8 - til later, more people were coming in. The service was okay, since there were only 2 - 4 waiters roaming around trying to satisfy and get everyone's orders. But they quickly cleaned up our table after spilling red wine and breaking the glass. =X ; They also serve you bread before you order, as soon as you finish one basket, the waiter will come get you more.
The food is incredible! very good. I recommend getting the escargot for appetizers, the duck, steak frites and chicken breast for the main course, creme brulee for dessert. Also, they have specials every night which sounds great too. It is a little pricy, but the food is worth it.
Its a very small restaurant, so expect to wait for a while. Ask the waiter to pair your meals with wine because that's their specialty. So, try it out!
This place is great! The restaurant is very cute and with a very relaxed atmosphere. We ordered the escargots, prosciutto salad, rack of lamb, duck, and the lemon tart. Every thing met expectations. The escargots were so tender and rich and the prosciutto salad very flavorful and simple. The duck meat melted in your mouth and the sauce was smooth and not at all overpowering. The rack of lamb had a great crust, but the actual cut of the meat did not look too appetizing. The cuts look a little butchered up, but I'm not a huge stickler on presentation, as long as the food is great, which it was. The entrees game with a creamy potatoes gratin and roasted baby carrots & asparagus. We finished the dinner off with the lemon tart. Very refreshing and the crust was a little chewy, like a cookie.
The service was great. Everyone was attentive and it seemed like we didn't have a set waiter since all came to our table. I'm definitely making the trip out to eagle rock again.
it seems that it has already been pretty well establish that this is a fantastic french hidden gem. The reason for my review is this:
Its not on the menu, but always in the kitchen: ORDER THE GRATIN POTATOES. Amazing, a little on the small side, but fantastic as an app or a side.
This restaurant is a gem. The staff are friendly and are all native french speakers. It was fun to practice my french too!
We celebrated a friend's birthday and I tried the french onion soup and the chicken breast special (boneless, skinless chicken baked in thin pastry. Served with potatoes gratin and veggies). It was amazing. I also had a glass of chardonnay. yum.
Highly recommended atmosphere and food. Bon appetite!
3 stars
My female dining companion wanted to see some Thunder Down Under The Eiffel Tower and I was in the mood for a nicely marbled cut of Cougar Fillet so we ended up at the famed "Hot Waiters & Cougars Gone Wild" French restaurant last night.
I think this place received high praise due to the excellent service and affordable prices of the dishes (entrees run anywhere from $15 - $22) more than anything else. Maybe my friend and I ordered the wrong items but it was the recommendation of our waiter.
We tried:
1) Prosciutto salad - A salad consisting of frisee (curly endive), tomatoes, served with a vinaigrette dressing and topped with prosciutto. The prosciutto alone was a little salty because it was a slightly thicker cut but when eaten together with the frisee leaves, there was a nice balance.
2) Halibut - The halibut is potato crusted served in a light champagne sauce with mashed potatoes, small carrots, and broccoli. The fish itself was tender and flaky so it was prepared well but the kicker was that sprinkled citrus peels were combined with the potato crust adding a slightly different taste and texture I wasn't too thrilled about. Unless you're a yuzu freak, request the cook prepare the halibut without the citrus peels.
3) Fillet of Beef - The fillet mignon is topped with roquefort (blue cheese) crumbles with a port reduction sauce. It comes with small carrots, broccoli, and scalloped potatoes (maybe Pommes Anna). I'm always wary of steaks with sauces because it makes me feel as if the cook is trying to cover up the quality (of lack thereof) of the meat. Although the steak was cooked to my liking, I could tell it wasn't a prime cut of fillet and I didn't like the port sauce as it invaded the beef too much. For $22 though, I didn't expect to be blown away by this steak.
4) Chocolate Mousse - The mousse was recommended by a different server who took our dessert order and the sweetness was perfect for me. It wasn't too rich and decadent but it had enough sweetness to start a nice cavity. The dish is topped with light whipped cream.
Overall, my friend and I found the food to be pretty average but the prices were decent. The abovementioned food including a $8 flute of sparkling wine set us back $77. Also, the servers are pretty friendly. For instance, one waiter took a picture with a nearby birthday girl and had her sit on his lap. The bday girl turned beet red as a nearby cougar (only one sighted) licked her lips in jealousy.
For some diners, great service and value oriented prices may justify the high ratings of this place but unfortunately, it doesn't for me. It was decent food but nothing to say Oui Oui about unless you're a coug in heat or you have a fetish for tall French men who are extremely friendly and charismatic.
Considering how prepared and orderly they were for serving 17 people for our friends bday, I'd like to give them a 5 star which includes the tres bien (very good) food. It's somewhat of a smaller sized restaurant with very authentic french food considering all the waiters are french the menu is in french as well.
We had the following:
1) soup de soir - cream of mushroom soup (very tasty and not overly done on the cream at all...tasted more like blended with potato or some sort of beans
2) steak avec frites - steak fries (a bit on the tougher side considering it's flank steak)
3) halibut (had a taste...not too bad, moist, buttery, and flavorful)
4) rack of lamb (probably one of the most tender rack of lamb i've had in my life and had no taste of game to it)
5) encoutre de poivre au vert - peppercorn rib-eye (very very tasty, full of flavor, juicy...get it medium rare (hardly any blood) and the peppercorn coating gives it a nice little kick
Probably not the best place to take a date on since it does get pretty loud especially on the busy weekends. The servers are very attentive and very entertaining (you'll understand if you go). I was also surprised to find that the dishes weren't over priced considering I've had beef/meat dishes in other restaurants that were pricier, which is def a plus! Parking is a little bit hard to find though since it's street parking.
Cafe Beaujolais takes on the French appellation's reputation as an under-appreciated establishment that manages to tuck itself away on a major thoroughfare. For an enjoyable dinner, walk in assured that the evening's food, wine and service will be enjoyable.
Recommended: escargot, halibut, rack of lamb, a glass of Beaujolais-Villages to share
Caveat: If you have traveled to France or dined at reputable locations the world over, arrive with reservation. Cafe Beaujolais is a simple place for simple pleasure: leave grand expectations at the door.
YUMMY! I loved this restaurant. Upon arrival, my boyfriend and I were greeted warmly with "bonjour" by the wait staff, who also appeared to be the owners.
We ordered the escargots, steak and frites, and peppercorn steak. The escargots were delightful. I especially loved dipping my bread into the butter, garlic, and parsley sauce that the escargots came out in. The steak was cooked to perfection and the peppercorn sauce was the perfect balance (not overly peppery).
The restaurant filled up quickly. We arrived at 7:00 in the evening, and by 8:00, the entire restaurant was filled. The restaurant had a great atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. I would definitely come back here again.
I went for my 31st birthday because i just really wanted something good to eat. I ventured out of my usual (filet mingon) and tried my dads rack of lamb. I tried rack of lamb once and wasn't impressed b/c it was too game-y for my taste.
But hooooly cow! My dad did it again, i friggin LOVED it... okay? i LOOOOVED it! It was tender, moist and the flavor was beyond discription. I ate the whole damn thing! Normally i can't finish my plate...but it was so damn good that i finished it ALL.
For dessert i had the chocolate cake. I asked my dad where he got it from and he said that he made it himself! WOW. I put this slice of heaven in my mouth and it melted on contact (or so it seemed)
They boozed me up, and the waiters of course were effing fabulous. I love those guys.
Leave it to Cafe Beaujolais to turn a dish that i didn't like into my new favorite!

I love this place! Besides the accomodating, warm and hot french waiters that speak in their dreamy accents, the food is spot on. Comparing it Paris ... mmmm and I miss Paris. Read foodie blogs and Yelp reviews before coming so I was more excited.
A group of friends took me for my birthday awhile back, though it was my choice. Had the classic duck breast in orange sauce, and it was amazing. Perfectly medium-medum-rare-but-slightly-on-the-rarer-side, with a delectable sauce. The veggie sides that accompanied were also good. Other people ordered the potato crusted halibut, steak, fish on risotto (special of the day), smoked salmon salad, and others - everything was top notch. For dessert we had creme brulee, chocolate mousse and something else. Whatever, everything here is fantastic! And very reasonably priced.
Food
Good! Boyfriend and I started with the escargots ($8), french onion soup ($7), beef filet ($22). We didn't want to be too stuffed and this ended up being the right portions. They split the beef filet into two after we told them we would share it and added $6 to the bill at the end. Not a bad deal, considering we would have paid another $20 for another entree. The escargots were amazing. They were soaked with oil and some sort of herb pesto I believe, and it was delicious. My boyfriend loved it, a real rarity when we eat out. The french onion soup was a bit sweet for my liking, it tasted as if there were no salt added. I don't love the norm of overly salty french onion soup, but a nice hint of salt is always tasty. The beef filet was delicious! It was served with carrots and asparagus and potatoes au gratin. The sauce was a bit sweet but it complemented the boeuf quite well. The total ended up being around $50.
It was extremely loud like many said, and we went at around 9:30 pm and the place was still pretty packed. Like other reviews said, the service was quite slow. It took us quite some time after the appetizers to get our entrees.
But the most disappointing part of the night was when my boyfriend told the waiter it was my birthday, and he told him they'd sing to me. We waited forever to get the check, and at that point, the waiters didn't seem like they were going to do anything, so we just left. Quite a disappointment! I read a similar review that someone's daughter received a birthday dessert but had no candle and was not sung to, and I was extremely sad that nothing was brought out to me! Maybe the waiters should quit flirting with all the cougars and pay attention to the other customers, especially when they straight up tell you it's their birthday.
We took my mom here for her birthday (my dad is a chef, so she's very particular with her restaurant choices) and she loooved it. There were five of us and we were all impressed! Now it's one thing to enjoy great tasting food, but this hidden small gem was a triple threat! 1) To have such reasonable prices for the quality of food served piping hot just the way it should be, 2) Have EVERY ONE in your table be satisfied with their specific entree of choice and have no complaints, 3) and experience great staff who paid particular attention to when your drink needed to be filled and to make sure your bread basket was never empty--- is definitely a rarity! We tried it all-the french onion soup, caesar salad, frisse w/poached eggs & warm bacon dressing, rack of lamb, filet mignon w/blue cheese crumbles & port wine reduction, the mahi mahi special of the day, and the parmesan crusted halibut. We were so full that even if we craved it there was no more room in our tummies for dessert. Plates were licked clean. Yum. Delish. The place is definitely small and can be crowded when it starts to fill up and my menu was old & ripped. I would've given it one more star but I truly disliked the fact that when we first walked into the french restaurant there was a divider panel with a Cafe Beaujolais t-shirt tactlessly displayed on the divider like we were about to enter a sports bar. Other than that expect us to be regulars at this comfortable little cafe.
I love this place.
I just had my birthday dinner there tonight, a table of 12. I'm still sort of high from what a wonderful night it was. I'd been there before a few times and had been very happy with the food and service and lovely neighborhoody atmosphere. I had been salivating at the thought of going back.
I was not disappointed. Tonight, the waiters were so attentive and brought us anything we needed. A waiter who might have been the owner (?) helped us pick some delicious wines for the table and everything we ate was delicious: escargots, goat cheese and salad, duck, halibut (my personal favorite), the sole special, steak frites and a fettucine dish with shellfish. And the desserts! Profitoleres (sp?), a perfect lemon tart, chocolate mousse, apple pie, and creme caramel. WOW.
I almost forgot, 2 of my friends were vegan and one vegetarian, and they were so impressed by the carrot soup and a pasta dish they absolutely loved. They said they often go to dinners like this and the only dish on the menu isn't actually very good and they have wine and bread, but they said they'd definitely bring people back here. Not what you might expect from a french restaurant, eh?
One of my friends is french (not french-american) and has been a culinary student, and i wondered how she'd feel about going to a french restaurant. She said it was the best she'd had here, and she thought the duck was absolutely delicious, as well as the desserts.
And ahem, the stunningly gorgeous waiters didn't hurt one bit. ;) I was completely charmed by them, particularly the one who had been tending to us all night, and when he learned it was my birthday, he gave me a lovely bottle of wine on my way out. *swoon*
Thank you Cafe Beaujolais. I feel very loved tonight. I had a great party at your restaurant. I brought the friends and you gave me delicious food and such a warm atmosphere, I am very lucky for that.
If you are a lady and don't know where to go with your girlfriends for a nice birthday dinner, have your birthday celebration/party here. It's a must. This was HANDS DOWN the best birthday dinner I've had. Seriously, very memorable. My friend Chrystal and I threw a joint birthday party seeing as though our birthdays are a day apart, and we chose this place based on lovely Yelpers so thank you guys!
We had an absolute blast with our friends and our servers! Pure entertainment. First of all, I am slightly inebriated, but the more the merrier right? That didn't quite make sense. I emphasized being a lady, because I didn't see a single female server. The servers are well, all male, gorgeous and hilarious. One of the servers said he reads the Yelp reviews but what gives, we're padding his ego as he probably reads this! But seriously, they made our evening but as any restaurant should have, their service was impeccable. They were constantly filling our glasses and checking on us, making sure we were finishing our wine and entrees. Plus, they give us two creme brulee desserts on the house and sang happy birthday in French. Calling us mademoiselle, asking mademoiselle this, mademoiselle that...damn, even if a few of us were taken, we felt pretty damn pampered.
I've never had French food, so this was a fun adventure in itself. The food is delish! I had the chicken with morel mushrooms and sauce...schiza (pardon the German), stuff is so good! Everything cooked to perfection, and it came with tomato topped with parmesan, roasted potatoes and some broccoli. Perfect proportion, too.
Slightly pricy but well worth it. Minus the appetizers, entrees start at $17.95 and up. I would definitely come here again though. It's a great experience, but it's also a great date place I feel. There's no need to rush, just a great place to enjoy your company and conversation.
The dawn of Yelping dates back to the very first century. I believe it was some guy named Paul who first blogged in his Epistles about a farewell dinner he attended at the Upper Room Cafe for a very exclusive party of thirteen:
"Five Stars of Bethlehem! What this humble noshery doth lack in style and service, it maketh up for with an extremely limited, yet extremely fulfilling wine selection. And try the Body of Christ, as well. It's to perish for!"
It's little known to many that this pithier writeup was in fact the original passage of that famous review; but because of the legendary mystique that began to develop around this historical blurb, the review was expanded, edited, and reedited over time to create a scripture that could both keep up with, and live up to, an event of such epic proportions.
What the hell does that have to do with the price of wine in France? Three points:
1. The Fodder: the 183 reviews that have come before are inadequate. They need to be expanded, edited, and reedited in order to do this place justice. Get to work.
2. The Shun: most people don't take the time to reflect, to step back and acknowledge where it all came from. It takes a brave soul to start a revolution - to put his reputation on the line in order to riff on food findings, retail, and other sundry services. Here's to Paul and all of the Yelpers that have followed.
3. The Not-So-Wholly Ghost: Cafe Beaujolais is the perfect place for a last supper, so if you're on your deathbed and in a pinch because you never got around to filling in that "Last Meal on Earth" field on your Yelp profile, then get your moribund ass up and head on over to the Beau for the ideal final feast. Also a must for people who are not dying!
Amen.
I've been wanting to try this place for years, but just hadn't gotten around to it until last night when a friend suggested we give it a try. I am giving it 5 stars, although I would only say pass on the Cesar's salad. My husband and I really love a Cesar salad, but this is not the place to order it. Very boring with very minimal dressing, 2 boring tomatoes and 2 non tasty croutons. Okay, now on to the great food. My husband and my friends husband ordered the steak topped with blue cheese in a port wine sauce. To die for. I normally don't order beef, but after 1 bite I wanted to come back for my own order. My girlfriend and I both ordered the halibut. if you are a fish lover I don't know if it will be to your liking, but if you want something that tastes delicious with no hint of the fact that you are eating fish, then this is the fish for you! Very very flavorful. For dessert I was thrilled that they had a lemon custard tart on special. SO good. My husband ordered the apple pie. If you like poached apples you will like this, but if you are expecting apple pie with a crust you will be disappointed, as my husband was. I also ordered regular coffee and they brought me steamed milk on the side with it which turned my coffee almost into a cappuccino, which was fun. Anyhow, I really can't wait to go back. The waiters were wonderful, the ambiance good and the food was really enjoyable. A great place to take a client or enjoy with friends.
I came here a while back with a party of four because my friend raved about this place.
They say you can judge a good french restaurant by the quality of the bread and butter they serve, so when we received a basket of their mediocre offerings I was immediately doubtful about the quality of the food. I've had better french baguettes in lower priced vietnamese restaurants. The bread and the butter must be below average quality just to keep the costs down and the patrons from filling up, because when my entree came out I was elated. The parmesan crusted halibut with champagne sauce was absolutely delicious. It came with mashed potatoes, tomato a la provencale, and haricots verts. The fish was tender and the sauce was decadently rich. Everything about it was delightful, except the candied orange zest they sprinkled on top, which i dismissed as a colorful garnish and pushed it to the side. It does not pair well with the fish at all.
It was a rough start but they redeemed themselves greatly and I'm definitely coming back!
Tolerable food. Cramped quarters. Supercilious, not terribly hygienic French waiter types who seem in a hurry to turn the tables over.
The best authentic and true FRENCH restaurant in Los Angeles.
If you really want the experience and the opportunity to try real French Cuisine this is the place to head out. Their decor is very toned down
and not posh at all...but the Ambiance of the place is really romantic, laid back and relaxing.
They have some amazing dishes at pretty decent prices. It's totally worth it to grab your own bottle of wine and head out here...
Definite Winner in My Book!
Thank you, Yelp-ers, for turning me on to this lovely little place!
A French foodie friend of mine was in town and I decided to take her and another friend to Cafe Beaujolais and we had an out-of-this-world dinner! As previous reviews mention, this place was unpretentious and unassuming. But, on a Friday eveing, in a sleepy little section of Eagle Rock, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a young urban hipster.
I had the chicken in morel sauce; my friends ordered duck and halibut dishes. The chicken was tender in a lovely creamy flavorful sauce. It was served with a slightly cheesy potato galette which was scrumptious! I tasted the other dishes, which were also very good (I don't even like fish and I liked the halibut), but I definitely picked best. The duck was traditionally cooked, and one of the best my friend had eaten. And, that's a pretty good endorsement!
We also samples the creme brulee and spakling wine for dessert. Yum. The custard was chilled and paired with the warm crispy sugar and the wine with a slight hint of almond, it was a lovely end to a great dinner.
Oh, and the waiters. Sigh. They were like a languid, leaning, cat-like French motorcycle gang of bad boys. RRRrrrrrRRRREeeeeerrrrr.
And, the interior, too, was unassuming and warm. Cute faux painted walls, dimly lit, French posters on the wall. Nothing to write home about, but it was nice in its down-home-y-ness.
I'll be going back again soon, if not for the food...for the WAITERS!
After reading all the yelpers review on this petite french restaurant- I decided to go with my boyfriend on our 2 year anniversary~ Just exactly how it was described: tres tres bien!! great food!!
Its my first time having french cuisine, i have been looking forward to it for SOOOO long and not disappointed at all. We ordered the escargot, french onion soup, cajun chicken with rice pilaf, the legendary canard (duck breast) in sweet tangy sauce and the chocolate mousse.
I am not an expert of escargot, its very garlicky and soft; i liked it, finished the whole order on my own since my bf dont eat "weird" stuff. The french onion soup that he ordered was a little too sweet for me, as my boyfriend described its more like a onion stew, he yummed it up.
The cajun chicken was the special last night; my man is a big fan of chicken, he liked it. For me, the plate was a little on the simple side comparing to the legendary duck breast. It's SOOOO juicy and tender, perfect combination with the sweet tangy sauce at the bottom. Even the stack of silces of potato goes SOOOO good with the sauce!!
Altho im a big fan of creme brulee, I went ahead with the chocolate mousse- the chocolate was sooooo rich, even the whipped cream was sooo light and fluffy.
And yes, 2 thumbs up for the raggedly GQ looking servers.
Dinner for two: $90 (includes tip)
On the menu: two appetizers, two entrees, and one dessert
Positive: attentive French-speaking waiters
Negative: food took a while
Yummy yummy! My hubby and I started our meal with the french onion soup and the house salad. Those were good, but our entrees were even better! I ordered the chicken special--the potatoes au gratin that came with were creamily delish! My hubbers had the parmesan crusted fish, which was soooo yummy! If they had an all-you-can-eat buffet, I'd go just for that. It was cooked to a moist and flaky perfection and beautifully paired with candied orange peels. I would've never thunk it, but a tres bonne accompaniment! Looking forward to another meal there the next time we decide to splurg =)...oh, and if you don't have room for dessert, beef up your second stomach (for me, it's my dessert stomach) and order the chocolate mousse!
Excellent!
My husband and I truly enjoyed our experience at this little hidden gem. Who would have ThUnK it that this restaurant would be sooooo good! The outside of the restaurant, including the blinding and tacky white sign leads you to believe that this restaurant is not much to expect. I was wrong!!! The food is soooooo good.
We shared the avocado/scallop/shrimp/mayo appetizer, which was the biggest mistake...we should have ordered two, one for the each of us. The appetizer disappeared, in a matter of 5 seconds, no joke! I'll go back just for that. For the main course, my hubby got the duck [medium rare] and I got the halibut. Both dreamy and wonderful. My hubby claimed that this was the best duck dish he's ever had. The sauce is really fantastic. My halibut was yum yum yum. I loved the white sauce it was in + all the veggies on my plate. yum!!!!! It went really well with my glass of wine, which our server recommended. Of course, we had the chocolate mousse. Wow, so thick, so rich, so yummy! The price for all this food...$100 including tip.
The only complaint I have is it's toooooo darn loud in there. It's not the music, is the darn people chattering the night away....it was that packed. I'll go back any day but on Fridays. What a great little find! A great date restaurant! Yay! Oh yeah, a Jake Gyllenhal and Sawyer (from Lost) lookalikes work here. Oh, they all seem to have French accents. Yay! I couldn't get over it....my hubby was annoyed by that! :P
Once again we tried to go to Casa Bianca only to be stopped by the ridiculous line out front, fortunately we had this as a back up plan and it was only moderately busy. I figured that with an almost 5 star average on Yelp and many reviews it had to be good, and it didn't disappoint.
I'm always wondering where all these French restaurants find so many French speaking staff still with the thick accent after all the years they've lived here but I'm not complaining. There's something quite sexy about it, and it completes the feel so I hope the thousands of local waiter/actors never lose it.
The food here was stellar, and very reasonably priced. We started with escargot. Nothing unique about it, just good, fresh, buttery and mouthwateringly good. Next came carrot soup. Again, nothing unique but nicely made. The thing about French food is that it's very traditional so it tends to be all about the ingrediants and the quality, as you're not going to get any odd combinations or textures. The quality of food here is top shelf which makes all the difference. Next came one order of duck breast and one order of lamb. The sides are the same, potatoes and carrots and green beans but the two plates have completely unique and different though equally amazing sauces. As with most French food, it didn't look overwhelming but we were stuffed by the end. Topped it off with the Chocolate Mousse because we tend to always get Creme Brulee or Apple Tarts and we wanted something different. We found it good if a little bland, we'll probably go for something else next time and there will most certainly be a next time.
Service was nice, especially for the area where service by and large sucks except for the nearby Camilo's. It seems the two places have hired all of the competant waiters in Eagle Rock. So while the service wasn't perfect, the accents were charming and they were more than adequate. There's a nice bar and the little bistro feels homey in an understated way.
In a city where traditional French restaurants are becoming an endangered species, this place is a beacon of hope.

A french cafe is not what you would expect to find next to a Thai restaurant that looks like you could go in for a psychic consultation too with its white facade and neon green lights. Cafe Beaujolais is warm and inviting and will lure you in with its wonderful aroma.
This place caters to almost every one of the senses. You've got the waiters who are very pleasing the look at. Their French accents caress the ears with their "Bon Soir"-s, "Merci"-s and "Bon appetite"-s. I started to salivate when our waiter told us about their specials - chicken breast on a bed of spinach wrapped up in pastry dough served with roasted potatos and zucchini. Yes, please. The texture of the pastry dough was excellent when it got a little moist from the juices of the spinach and chicken. I had this with a glass of Bordeaux and I was in heaven.
When we were leaving the restaurant, we noticed a group of their waiters sitting at a table and eating. If they choose to eat that food after serving it for hours that must mean something. I will definitely be back.
Hooray for unpretentious French food! I had never eaten a non-Asian duck dish until I had the version here and it was delicious. When I ordered it the waiter said, "medium rare, yes?" not even giving me a chance to have it any other way. Thank god for that. All of the meat entrees here are wonderful provided you make sure to order it on the rare side. The soups and desserts are solid but less memorable.
Of course the thing that always threatens to overshadow the food here is the waitstaff. What everyone says about them is true. They are a pack of swarthy, strapping French men who look like movie stars. If you took the staff and food from Cafe Beaujolais and built a restaurant around it in West Hollywood somewhere you could easily charge a fortune. But since this is Eagle Rock, it is reasonably priced and the customer base is more family oriented. Took my dad here for Father's Day and he loved it.
Went here recently to celebrate a friend's birthday, and what can I say? Eating here was well worth the price of admission. And by admission, I mean that I definitely feel like we got treated to dinner and a show that night. We were just a group of girls out to have fun and celebrate our friend's birthday and I think that the waiters had just as good of a time as we did, bantering back and forth and just making the experience an overall pleasant one.
At the start of the meal they suggested a lovely pinot noir that was one of the best that I've had. It paired perfectly with the variety of dishes that we ordered and they even gave us another bottle for free! Out of everything we ordered, the duck was probably the best. Delicious! We went all out and ordered a trio of desserts, the creme brulee, apple tart tatin, and the chocolate mousse all of which were quite good.
I'm kind of a cheapskate, so this is a place I wouldn't go to normally, but it was nice on a special occasion and I would definitely suggest it to others who are in to this kind of thing.
HEAVENLY.
It doesn't get any better than the rack of lamb paired with one of their moderately priced rhone region wines. And if they happen to have the raspberry tart for dessert... This would be my choice for a last meal.
I can't wait to go back to this charming jewel of a place. Located in Eagle Rock off the beaten, predictable path- this place offers intimate dining, amazing service and even more amazing food! I brought my man here for his birthday last week, we had a great time over a bottle of Cabernet from the Bordeaux region of France. Had the soup de jour, their NY Steak (special of the day) and my boyfriend had their trout dish: portions were great, hands down the best French food I have ever had. Ahhh and the service...the french waiters were funny and attentive. Like I said, can't wait to go back!
More like 3.75, but that rounds up to a 4. Bf wanted to try some French food for his birthday. Yelped and this place looked good, especially since it was classified at 2 $$, which is on the lower end for fancy schmancy French.
Ambiance: Small to mid-size restaurant. Lighting is a bit low and although can get a bit loud, you can still have an intimate conversation. Cute bistro decor.
Food: French onion soup was tasty, lots of bread and gooey cheese. Our entrees were pretty good. The sauces that came with our chicken and steak were excellent, those Frenchies invented those tasty sauces. I used my chicken to sop it all up. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked and the veggie and potato spears accompaniment was not overcooked. Chocolate mousse was light, fluffy, and melt in your mouth goodness. Lemon tart was surprisingly sourish and tart.
Service: All the servers are French and young. Good eye candy for the gals. It may seem like service takes forever, you may wait awhile for your entree. I think that's more due to that it's a French establishment, where your usual dinner will be a 2 hour affair. Just because you're sitting there with empty dessert plates, doesn't mean they'll automatically give you your check. We had to ask for it, no biggie.
Lowdown: Cute place for moderately priced French cuisine. It's more like $$$ than 2. All entrees run from $20-$25, but I noticed pretty much everyone in the restaurant were ordering starters, entrees, desserts, and wine. We ate well with drinks for $100 for both of us. Great place for a date or small group to talk and hang with some good standard french bistro food.
I've been here twice and noticed something - THIS PLACE IS COUGAR CENTRAL. The food is excellent, the service is wonderful (you can read about that in the other reviews) but watch the tables full of "just a little past their prime" women soak up the attention from the waiters (owners?)
The late forties woman in the table next to mine asked her friend, "I think the waiter likes me, should I slip him my number?"
I wanted to scream, "Lady! They're just charming French men - they do that 'sexy eyes' thing to everyone!" Perhaps I should have just steered her to yelp so she could read about it.
Or maybe I'm the dummy and she had a dessert that wasn't on the menu.
Anyway, be adventurous and ask the waiters what they recommend. I did both times I was there and I had the one of the best meals I've ever had in L.A.
Not sure if I care enough about Cafe Beaujoulais, I probably won't be back anytime soon though.
Overall, 2.75, 3 for the time being.
It was boisterous when I walked in at 7:30, and thankfully my friend succeed to secure a table. BTW, no reservation on weekend. Really? Hmmm.
Quick food recaps:
escargot - sealed in a rich butter garlic sauce, good for bread dipping.
lamb - tenderly cooked, proper seasoned (as well as sauce), one
thumb up for the sides (baked tomato with crumbs and potato hush)
fillet with port sauce - meh meh meh. Meat had a dry cook ring and the sauce was simply forgetable.
Dessert - cream puff. Huge mistake recommend by our waiter. The "puff" didnt have much texture and was blend. Cream didn't taste much distinctive than the one you can get from commercial can, need me to say more?
Service - Nice, warm, attentive European style.
I might overlook several hot items (i.e. onion soup, creme brulee) because I simply couldn't finish that much food - but until then, three stars.
