Review from T. E. F.
San Francisco, CA
Cafe Abir is easily the best cafe in the NoPa area, bar none. Free wifi, the most amazing selection of newspapers (how many cafes have the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal and Barrons?), oddball specialty drinks like Salted Caramel Lattes (just sucked one of those bad boys down, the salt on the whipped cream was excellent).
The people who work here are friendly, professional and courteous. Although attitude is common here in SF this is a no-attitude kinda place. If you're mojo just wants a place to cool your heels, and get your caffeinated buzz on (or even liquored up), this is it.
The only downside: it's so awesome it's sometimes crowded. A slight downside: rather busy intersection.
Extra (and recent) plus: extended parklet off wood and steel.
Reasonable hours, you're not likely to find this place closed.
The seating can be awkward for lappy, and the extra tall boothlets can make you feel like you're in a high chair. While the opposing side has tables that are a bit on the low side (perfect for drinks though).
Right off the 24 Divisadero, a block away from a park, across the street from Little Star Pizza (a good place to meet friends before hitting up The Star), across from a liquor store, it's hard to beat Cafe Abir for sheer perfection.
It even shares physical proximity to a bar I've never been in, I think it's a sake/wine bar? But I'm pretty sure you can drink in Cafe Abir (I've seen "free beer with sandwich" signs which I've never taken advantage of, but how cool is that?).
A somewhat hard to watch TV guards the archway over the entrance. The bathroom is down a long somewhat frightening corridor, but I've never experienced it being less than clean.
The interior is a somewhat weathered but otherwise well thought out "Lawrence of Arabia" kinda arabesque motif.
Electrical outlets are fairly plentiful. The "house" wifi has given me problems but the "backup" ZRNET never fails (using it now).
Smokers like to hang out outside and do their thing.
Cash only, but they have an ATM.
TIP#1: Go to Little Star across the street: $0.25 charge ATM (the only thing better is a supermarket) to get cash.
TIP#2: buy snacks at the liquor store across the street with no name to save some bucks if you're "frugal" and stuff.
Another win, in the city of San Francisco. -

Cafe Abir is good in my book.
Chai tea is pretty awesome.
I particularly like this place because the of the seating area in the corner with the round about that turns into a long bench, there's electrical outlets and I can actually sit there and study or do my homework on my notebook without being disturbed. The atmosphere is pretty mellow and the folks that work here are laid back and down to earth. -

CASH ONLY!
Lots of tables, but many on the edge only have seats on one side of the table - one long bench on one side. Unfortunately, most of those tables are the ones with access to the electrical outlets. I suppose, you could bring someone you have a crush on and pretend to need the outlet and be "forced" to sit side by side on the one little table.
They have food there, though it is hit and miss. My friend ordered a tuna salad and it was HUGE. The only thing was that it was just full of iceberg lettuce, which was disappointing. I ordered the beef lasagna, which was okay. I remember I had ordered a meatball sandwich once, it was horrible.
Free wireless internet. Some outdoor seating. -

I used to think this place had one of the best cups of coffee but my visit this last Saturday has changed my mind. The coffee was burnt and did not taste all that great and it seems it is now $2 for a small cup of coffee. Come on now!
Really disappointed and felt like the vegan baked goods were really overpriced as well. Too bad. Oh it was $3.75 for a vegan cookie. Really? Guess the hipsters are willing to pay the price but you just lost a old customer who supported when you opened.

Wow. First review in quite some time. This funemployed thing has obviously taken its toll on me.
Lately I have been on a Cafe binge. Or maybe it's 'cafe' hopping. Whatever the case is I'm highly caffeinated and filled with shmear. From one wi fi to the next. Scraping the nets for some form of employment that won't drive me up the wall. Cafe Abir is the closest place to my house. While its not the sightliest place, it certainly has its perks (pun intended). Coffee is decent. Staff is nice. The seating leaves something to be desired. All in all, its not a bad choice...its a block away...and some days I can't be fucked to venture beyond the WA/NOPA.

Went for dinner with a buddy and his 8 year old. The boy didn't yell but was a bit rambunctious (I'm talking about me here) and they tolerated, smiled even.
The meatball sammy is not too bad, although it ain't AK Subs by a long shot. But, for $7.50 it does come with a PBR or Miller draw. Want to be filled up on a sandwich and a beer for under $10 (and AK is closed)? This is not a bad choice. -

FINAL a strong coffee is great for people like me but the food not so hot in. I been there 4 years ago and I told a friend of mine and he loves it!
It's not for everyone who can handly supper strong coffee and spice! But then again I am spainsh and Jewish It did not bug me at all! The food can do better!
The sad side is bum or poor people who always asking to help them for food or to drink a coffee. -

Stopped by this cafe randomly and thought it was a nice place and could definitely see myself studying here...etc if I lived in the city.
I only got a chamomile tea (but it was the awesome mighty leaf brand) so I'm rating this place more on environment...etc. The staff was very friendly and they had a flat screen TV (showing the Sunday Night Football game which was awesome) and some great seating. The place also has free wifi which is always key to a great cafe. The pastries looked great and there were alot of vegan/healthy options as well.
My one complaint would be that the glass I had my tea in didn't have a handle which makes you wait to drink the beverage so that could be improved upon but other than that, thought this was a cute cafe with great seating, food/drink options and a friendly staff. -

I love the decor and food/drinks, but the baristas are terrible. They apparently only greet you if you're a regular.
I'm really nice and outgoing by nature, so I always chat with the baristas at any cafe I go to. However, the ones at this shop SUCK.
I stood there for 2 minutes without being greeted, and I was the only customer waiting to be served. Finally, the barista guy (one of three working, only one making a drink) nodded his head to signal that I should give my order. WTF?
They don't take your name, or tell you where OR how to pick up your order -- and they have a really awkward non-obvious place where they put the drinks and food. So, when they put it out, they just call out the type of drink/food and leave it there. That makes no sense.
Overall, I'd visit for a study sesh if all I was ordering was a cup of coffee and I didn't care about being treated like I didn't exist. -

Um, downgrade.
Your coffee is definitely sour. Burnt maybe? But I make scrunchface when I drink it. That's no good. Still I will sit here. And use your giant table. That somehow doesn't have any outlets near it anymore. (What happened?(-1 star)).1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Delya S.
WARNING: Don't come here for coffee unless you enjoy STRONG coffee! Cafe Abir derives its name from the Arabic word for a good aroma. If the owners herald from an Arab coffee tradition, that could explain the strong taste that other reviewers found unpalatable. Me, I love the strong stuff!
This is a pleasant stop for coffee and baked goods. The baristas when I've been in are really pleasant. (I'm really really surprised to see reviews critical of them!) The coffee is the sort that your spoon stands up to. The only baked item I've tried is so good that I'm stuck on it: the spanokopita. Yum. I could eat one now. The atmosphere here is nice and comfortable.
Be warned, this is a cash only stop. -

The location and chill factor of the place is great! However, I ordered a salad (added tuna, which I was willing to pay extra for) that ended up being almost $11 for a huge mound of Iceburg lettuce (I didn't even know they HAD Iceburg lettuce anymore ;) with a very small amount of veggies and tuna. The dressing was good though. I don't really go to this place for the food anyway, but I was starrrrrving! Next time, I will go there on a full stomach and just order a coffee.

Review from Nora S.
I stopped by Cafe Abir this morning because my kitchen is being remodeled and the carpenter came MEGA early. While not really on my morning route, my preferred coffee shop that is recently burnt down (R.I.P. People's Cafe). My old boss had taken me here a few times and I remembered it being a good looking place (literally- it is really lovely inside). I ordered a medium soy hot chocolate and a bagel with cream cheese and avocado. My total was $7-something, which felt a little pricey, but I guess maybe it wasn't. My bagel was pretty good, and my hot cocoa was delicious.
I'm not sure if Cafe Abir will be my new morning coffee shop because driving down Divisidero is pretty balls, and they are cash only (the bigger issue- I tend not to carry that much cash). But in a pinch, I will definitely return. -

oh no. The barista who kind of acts Dr. Who'ish has been fired. Well, this is just the lamest thing ever. He's been there ever since the 80's. Not sure what the management was thinking, but ever since they changed their cup sizes, he was the only thing that made the place nice.
Im boycotting. -

3.5 rounded down.
Staff: A few staff are really friendly, but most come across as condescending.
Ambiance: You can get work done here, but there's a lot going on and distractions are plentiful. Abir is better for catching up with friends or a coffee meeting. Lots of natural light, and there are usually tables available.
Drinks: Large tea menu. They serve all their tea in a glass cup instead of a mug, which I find really irritating. Too hot to carry to your table.
Food: Paninis and sandos run about $7, which includes a beer or Italian soda (~ 8 oz.). They're fine for a coffeeshop, but I wouldn't call Abir a destination for food.
Bottom line: Good for meeting up with someone, tolerable for getting work done (if that's your goal, go to Apollo). -
Review from Mansi A.
I work from home frequently, so someone recommended I check out this cafe. I'm so glad I did!
Cafe Abir has a great selection of pastries, food, and coffee. I just spent an hour or so here while I drank my coffee.
The perfect spot -- a great cross-section of the SF population, free wi-fi, plenty of tables (which are super comfy) + power outlets, and overall great environment to get some work or studying done.
This will definitely become a regular go-to spot for me!
Tip: Use the "FreeZRWiFiHotSpot" internet hotspot. Many people reviewed about not being able to connect to the Cafe Abir hotspot, and while I'm not sure why that's the case, I had the same issue.
Oh, and Ca$h only. -

I was house hunting in this neighborhood and since I am a huge Cafe Go-er I thought I'd make my way and check out a new cafe in my potential hood.
I like the size of the cafe. There are a lot of places to sit and different sized tables. I chose to sit at the high seated tables, which I found to very comfy. The tables in the middle seem to be very squished together and it's awkward if you have to move around the cafe because you are shuffling and trying not to bump into someone sitting.
The staff really wasn't friendly. The girl working at the register was extremely annoyed that I was counting out exact change (come on...really? I counted out like 45 cents). I tipped her a dollar for my coffee, but I still don't know why I did that. The guy that was making the coffee seemed like he hated his job or maybe it was just the customers that come into his workplace.
The coffee is meh, decent but nothing special. I really hate it when coffee places serve you coffee in a pint glass, which is exactly what they do here. The coffee is scalding hot and filled to the very brim of the tall glass. It is impossible to avoid 1) Burning your hand while trying to hold the full pint glass, and 2) Spilling the hot coffee all over yourself while trying to shuffle to your seat.
I walked up to the coffee bar with hot coffee all over my hands to ask for a napkin and the barista looked at me and simply handed me 1 napkin. What the....? The coffee was everywhere....1 napkin? I understand trying to be eco friendly, but sheesh. Why aren't there any where the 1/2 and 1/2 is?
Another thing, I couldn't get their wifi to work. When I went to look for the password, which is on a piece of paper by the register, the guy who looks like he hates his job gave me another crazy look making me feel totally unwelcome. I ended up using the "FreeZRWiFiHotSpot" internet and paying for it because I couldn't bring myself to ask for help from these people.
I tend to get along with everyone and love the cafe experience...but wow. Not here.
2 stars for the high seated tables.
This place was alright for this one time, but I will not be coming back. -

Most will say, as will I at times, that coffee is the adrenaline needed to start the day. I also need a kind staff to get me going. Cafe Abir has that morning staff.
All of the folks there are either young, working students that are aiming to please you with every cup they pour while catching a good read off their text book during the morning lull, a quiet, and gentle soul that wants nothing but to be your friend and create that glorious latte or mocha to make your friends at work jealous, or a local all-around-fun fella that has good stories and a verbal pat on the back to make you feel like today is the day I'll make things happen.
If you are in the neighborhood, and wake up nice and early, stop by and say hi. (If you start it off, they will certainly follow up ten fold).
The coffee at Cafe Abir is a bold, thick brew. Smooth and with a mix of raw sugar and some nice half and half to lighten it up, I can say is a favorite for the Divisadero strip. -

Real live conversation I just participated in:
[scene: Me standing waiting for my peach smoothie; Barista 1 frantic, mixing my smoothie; three people behind me; Barista 2, somewhere in the back; Polite Euro Tourist Couple, standing anxiously to the side.]
PETC: (after waiting patiently, makes a grab for B1's attention) Sorry, the Toilette?
B1: What?
PETC: Excuse me, the Toilette, please?
B1: WHAAT?
PETC: (flusterd) the TOILETTE pllease.
B1: oh you know what, the key is upstairs, and I'm really busy.
Me, PETC,: (speechless)
[Barista 2 enters stage left, stands watching B1. Then moves to exit, left.]
Me: Do you know that poor lady has been trying to get the bathroom key?
B2: yeah, well we don't really clean the bathrooms.
PETC:" (Imploring look)
Me: She can't use the bathroom?
B2: (to PETC) you can use the bathroom, but we're not janitors.
[I exit, right.]
Youth, do you not travel anymore? Have you ever been a guest in a foreign city?

Open late! Few coffee shops are open late in SF, but this place is.
Also, they server beer, which is quite a plus when crunching away on the laptop on the weekend or a random evening.
The sandwiches are better than the average coffee shop sandwiches due to the kitchen which I am guessing also server food to the two other establishments that are broken off of the same space.
Now the downsides... The tables in the middle are bolted to the ground, close together, and kind of small. The best place to sit for me is the community table, or the table as soon as you enter the door.
Also on the downside is the decor. It doesn't seem to have an identity. But that may not bother some people. -

4 stars? Only because of the disconnection of the staff to the customer and the business, creating a commune type setting.
As a cafe, it's my least favorite in the neighborhood, yet I return regularly. Why you ask? Because I can camp out all day milking one stupid coffee or cup of tea. This totally goes against my ethics and sense of cafe etiquette, but no one here cares so why should I? I would buy more, but the food is very lackluster, the coffee is kinda crappy, the italian soda choices are pathetic, and the soda is part is flat. I just watched a woman ask the staff to heat up her tupperwared food she brought in and then requested salt and pepper! The audacity I thought. However, they gladly did it and then she whipped out a huge tupperware bowl salad. I only laughed.
The big bonus just discovered today and warranted this review...you can order sushi newt door and eat it here! F'ing awesome. Now I have a reason to look forward to this place rather than just a study spot. Oh, and they always have Giant's games on.
And not all the staff has attitude. There are like 2 or 3 nice guys here. -

I love the feeling of going to cafes and feeling like a city girl. haha. Ok. Anyways, this place is spacious, has a nice big table, but they need more outlets! Also, they sell beer, and their food menu items all come with beer, even though you dont want one, so you either get that or an italian soda.
When we wanted to order a sandwich, at around 3 (they serve food until 9:30) the girl said they ran out of sandwiches and paninis. So we got the greasy, probably frozen lasagna. BUT, the man after us got a sandwich? Not sure why they ran out of bread for us but not for the man after us.
Its a nice cafe, just needs some fixing. -

I had only been to this coffee bar a few times prior to the renovation. The times I had been there, I found it warm, inviting and homey. The new version, isn't so much as warm. It looks great, the decor is very stylish and cool. The problem is that it lost some of that warmth. Whether it is something that will come back in time remains to be seen.
They still make a great cup of coffee so I'll continue to go, hoping for the return of that loving feeling. -

What is up with that massive TV????
I've been going to Abir off and on for years. I find it's a great place to meet up. I don't live nearby anymore, which is why it's been off and on.
The food and the coffee are really good. The atmosphere is GREAT. The wifi and the outlets speak for themselves.
But what is up with all these folks who complain about the service??? I've always been treated very well there, whatever the time of day. I suspect that the complainers are "not from around here." I've noticed how white and yuppy-fied the neighborhood has gotten lately and I can't help but think that the whiners expect some kind of 2-star restaurant service at a corner coffee shop. Get over it! It's a coffee shop, for God's sake. Maybe you should check your egos and your entitled attitudes at the door!!
And I want to give a shout out to the night crew. They are especially sweet--especially the sweetie-pie guitar player guy with the pony tail. -

i must say that this coffee has a never failed me to bring me back to life after a either a hard day at work or suffering from the after effects of a night of drinking and partying...
I used to live in the neighborhood and moved to the east bay and this is one place that I would pay the bridge admission to grab a bag of coffee grounds.
In the past I also found this place to be good for meetings and doing homework, lifework and even the occasional date. Perfect location in the Western Edition to sit outside and people watch and ease drop on a conversation. Or even ease drop and join the conversation.
But me I just come for the coffee -
Review from Andrew K.
I'm not completely sure what to make of this place! Do I love it or hate it?
The location was convenient. I was visiting a couple of friends in Western Addition that lived a block away in opposite directions.
The interior: couches and bunch of them, 70's style tall tables and chairs, and unusually high velvety booth setting that must have been handed down from the clubhouse of the old San Francisco Warriors basketball team.
The crew: baristas stood around, disinterested, carrying on conversations amongst themselves, gazing at eclectic characters this cafe seems to attract, rather than noticing that I was waiting patiently to order a drink. Annoying!
Amenities: there is free WiFi here and plenty of electrical outlets below or beside the couches, to accommodate enough people who like to bring their laptops to get some work done or surf the web while enjoying a hot beverage.
And speaking of hot beverages, the hot apple cider here is the hottest and tastiest cup of cider I think I've ever had! But, then again, they fill it in a glass that is too hot to pick up once it's poured!
I am definitely not a fan of this place...but still. Maybe I'll come back for the hot apple cider. :| -

Not sure about the most recent reviews but this place must have been reading them because I thought the service was pretty good! I love the fact that they have PBR on Tap, lots of outlets, seating, free wifi.
I had an old geezer accost me and have the joint as to why his laptop from 1792 wasn't working with the wifi, but I chalked that up to happenstance. For the most part, this compared MUY nicely to the other coffee shops I have been to in the area.
The place is connected to Corkage which is wine bar/store.
I didn't eat here but one of the girls near me ordered a salad and was hella impressed by the size and contents. I plan to keep coming back! -

Cafe Abir's coffee is quite good but their food menu is sub-par. They use the same cut-up rotisserie chicken (dark meat..ugh) in every dish. I asked for no chicken in my caeser salad however was handed a plate brimming with chicken (last time I asked for chicken and didn't get any- huh?) The chicken lasagna was frozen/microwaved/processed- not good. Next time I'll pass on the menu and hopefully get there before the bagels run out!

Definitely a place I would go more often if it was close to home. It's spacious, has some couches, and has a TV so I could catch a little football while I was there.
The barista let me get a Big Daddy with the $6.95 sandwich/beer combo deal, even though officially only PBR and High Life are eligible. Much love for that. My portabella sandwich was pretty good, but I saw someone else eating a turkey sandwich that looked a lot better, mostly because it was on a nice roll instead of grocery store bread.
I did have to listen to a couple of mildly obnoxious Hastings students gossip about boys and say things like "I kind of want to get back together with my ex. He's got a lot of money" and "Some people are really into public interest law. Not me. I want money." I'm sure they'll make highly scrupulous and truly charming lawyers someday. -

Very pleasant NoPa coffee house with plenty of tables inside and out to sit at while drinking a good cup of coffee.
Abir roasts its own beans in a manner that has a distinct presence but with lower acidity. Works well for me.
Only odd part is that the Cafe is tied to a Wine Shop and a Sushi Restaurant. While I realize that they are all managed and owned by the same entity, the fact that they are all interconnected (literally - you can walk from one to the other) just strikes me as strange. -

I stumbled on this place last night while trying to find a place to eat before heading to Candybar.
Not only does this place offer coffee and pastries, but it also offers a menu with salads, sandwiches and lasagna!
I had the meat lasagna and it was really good. Really cheesy and filling. My husband had the turkey sandwich which was also really good. The avocado was soo fresh and refreshing!
Glad I stumbled on this place, hope to stop by again in the future! -

I dropped in to the cafe one day, when I was walking around near Alamo Square. This cafe is a decent neighborhood cafe with the predicitable, yet necessary inclusion of free internet.
I like the ambience, the menu and the service out here. It feels like a great place to sit around for hours, working on your laptop. One thing that stood out a bit for me was "The Africano" ...... a type of coffee that quite a bit reminds me of the now famous, Flat White that hails from New Zealand/Australia.
The coffee is good, the service is fast. The place was full at 11 a.m. on a Wednesday. Looks like Cafe Abir is doing well for itself. Although it has a good variety of things that keep it up, it really isn't stunning or worth walking half an hour for. Hence I call it a neighborhood cafe. -

Disappointed that it sucks, because it's on my block and has a nice appearance. To me the coffee is bitter and over-roasted. If ordering coffee for consumption there, it's inexplicably served in a pint beer glass, resulting in a scalded hand. The indoor seating is annoying, too many chairs and tables crammed too close together, forcing you to shuffle them around to get to and from your seat.

Review from Cathy K.
This place was an oasis in the midst of Bay to Breaker chaos. A great place to fuel and freshen up. And from the looks of it, a nice spot to hang out - catch up with friends, plug into their free wi-fi and study.
They have a good array of eats + drinks - ranging from sandwiches, salads, sweet and savory pastries, cookies. They also serve beer, wine and Italian sodas.
I like the layout of this cafe. Tables & chairs in the middle, a high banquette on one side of the room to perch a'top and view the world go by, and another lower banquette along the window to kick back.
