Ameena's Smoothie-meter:
Goooooood - Good - Fair - Bad - Baaaad - Baaaaaaaaaad
(yes, I know, there are more on the negative end than the positive end but it's MY smoothie-meter!)
Cafe 2115 is a relative newcomer to SoHa and opened it's door a few months ago. I'm not sure if it's Senegalese or Guinean, but it's one or the other and they offer typical West African fare in an American diner type setting.
Since they're also a juice (and smoothie) bar, I wanted to try out their smoothies. I ordered the mango tango as that was apparently the most popular of the 13 available smoothies. A huge smoothie (which was actually the small size) was for $5 dollars; a large is for $6 (24 oz). It looked promising and was a combination of mango, pineapple, banana, and coconut cream. I think there was one more fruit in it.
As I walked home, I took a sip. It was baaaad, almost borderline baaaaaaaaaad, although it had the potential to be good. The problem was the coconut creme. Coconut creme is that REALLY sweet coconut and sugar concoction that goes into Pina Coladas and other mixed drinks where there's alcohol to cut the sweetness. Half a can of it in a smoothie - as I suspect was the case here - is lethal (and is also probably about an additional 500 calories). The smoothie was sickeningly sweet although behind all that sugariness, there was potential for a good smoothie. 3 sips and it had to go into the trash because I just couldn't take the sugar content.
I'm giving Cafe 2115 3 stars, although they really only deserve 2 because I hate being the "first" to review a place and trashing the place. I also didn't try anything else either so it's not entirely fair to judge them based on this one drink. In fact, if I could, I would not rate it at all and just write this as a "comment" about a place.
I will say that the smoothie had potential. So, if you ever decide to have a smoothie from here, just make sure they don't put more than a teaspoon of that coconut creme into it, or choose one without the coconut creme.
I probably will come back to try one of their juice concoctions - they looked pretty interesting (and healthy!). They also have wheat-grass, not that I'm ever going to order that, but it's an indication that they're a "serious" juice bar. Hopefully, the juices will be better than the smoothies.
