The place is pretty crowded at 10am on a Saturday so I guess is popular amongst the community there. It was hot inside but we couldnt find place to sit anywhere else.
The person taking the order asked us to order a juice or something as the main breakfast order was going to take close to 30 min. I appreciate the fact that they were honest about it and told us that in advance. Many restaurants dont do that. I ordered a orange juice which was pretty tasty.
After my long arduous wait I finally got my mexican omellete in burrito style. It was extremely health made with soy. I have to admit it was really nice. The best part is that inspite of being in Coronado it wasnt pricey. The crowd is pretty vibrant and lively at that time of the day. Good place to go.. Might go again if i am in that part of town..
Good for people watching, but is overpriced for how much they give you. But it is for tourists more or less b/c of its closeness to the beach/Del.
Not very friendly allergy menu items.
Good variety of drinks though.
I can make egg whites for $1 instead of the $8 they charge you.
Grab a coffee and watch the people as they walk by the patio. Thats it.
This is the first bad review I've ever written on Yelp but I had such a terrible experience here I had to Yelp it. I was in Coronado this weekend and decided to try Cafe 1134 given the pretty good reviews on this site. Unfortunately the experience was terrible. As my friend and I walked in we were deciding what to order he said "maybe we should ask her [the person behind the counter who I think was the owner] what her favorite things are". The woman heard him make this comment and instead of smiling or being helpful she gave us the DIRTIEST look ever and walked away. Gee sorry I wanted to know what you like at the place YOU work at (or even own). At least the other server who brought us our food was friendly.
So we made our decisions on our own and I got a breakfast sandwich and and the Cortez omelet. Both of which were terrible. The breakfast sandwich was basically an omelet put in between a couple pieces of bread. That would be okay if the omelettes weren't terrible with a dry consistency and generally tasteless. Neither item was finished.
Boating to Glorietta Bay from Mission Bay we like to take our dinghy in and walk around to find something to check out places with wifi. If we can also get some coffee and not to get ripped off we're happy. But once we had located this place we were more than happy.
Today I needed to be in a wifi spot so I could organize a job interview. Last night we found this place was open until 9pm with a lot of locals at the patio tables. We knew I had to check in with a recruiter so we checked the hours, they are open from 6am yeeee-haw!
1. We could sit with our dogs and chat with locals.
2. Get a variety of food, including breakfast all day
3. Water bowls for the dog
4. Great coffee
5. Other choices than coffee if you need a Sobe and someone needs a coke or a tea and they don't feel like coffee.
6. 3 or 4 patio tables out front for people watching.
7. 6 tables on the back patio in lots of nice shade (there is a secret alley way along the side near the front a few doors down or you can go through to the back inside as well)
I had the European for breakfast and it was quite tasty and the aioli dip on the side was exquisitely spicy yet flavorful. We were actually waiting on someone but she ended up canceling on us so while waiting we had the brie in pastry, for a tide over. Excellent squishy warm cheese in pastry.
Mi mama took me here before she took me to get my tarot cards read on Saturday. I was extra hungover and working with about two hours of sleep. Sitting in a fancy schamcy cafe in Coronado was not sounding so appealing to me. I would have much rather been curled up on the couch with some greasy fast food but whatever.
I was pleasantly surprised with the menu. I ended up with a Roma panini and pasta salad. The panini had greasy buttery bread with turkey, bacon, tomatoes and lots of swiss cheese with an artichoke aioli. It was pretty damn good and managed to soak up the residual booze in my tummy. Mama had a chicken salad which looked great.
Their iced tea wasn't my favorite it was a black peach tea and it kind of irritated my throat a bit but they will make any tea on ice for you.
The meal was a bit pricey for what we ordered but given the locale and the quality of food, I suppose it was to be expected.
I do not recommend sitting upstairs on the little loft as it is stifling hot and the lack of ventilation left us both feeling a little whooozy.
I don't come to the island often so I don't know how this place stacks up against other nearby cafes. I would have given the spot a 3 star but the fact they were bumping Miami Horror warranted another star. Or maybe I should of tried eating there?
+ Above average coffee
+ Back patio looks like a cool place to hang out
- Generic looking
After reading all the reviews took guests from out of town for a light lunch. We were very disappointed. Slow service. Very average food. Not going to return.
I have been to cafe 1134 for a quick drink or coffee a few times, used their wireless connection with my mp3 player (no big Wifi session). Although the cafe's atmosphere and decoration is a bit different from all the Starcraps imitations out there, I was never really convinced it's that different. Sitting down for lunch might be a different experience. People serving you at the counter are not always very friendly (maybe overworked or underpaid, or both), and their drinks are ok, but not great. Prices are high, like in most coffee shops located in trendy areas.
B'fast sandwiches were ok but: the coffee (latte) was TERRIBLE. Bad tasting milk w bad tasting coffe mixed in. And adding insult to injury, came w cup sleeves bearing samples of trident gum to prevent 'coffee breath'. Not a good way to start the day!
The lunch we had here was awesome, and it's nice to find a low key cafe in Coronado that isn't jam packed with tourists. I ordered a frappe off their menu and it definitely did not taste like it had any coffee in it. I think they forgot to add the espresso. Also, the patio in the back is kind of shabby and disheveled.
Everything else here was awesome though - great location, quick service, awesome menu, seating for many despite the deceptively small size. My friends and I were able to hang out and converse without feeling rushed to leave or guilty for hogging a table, the staff was friendly and prompt,..good experience all around (except for the non-coffee). We'll be back, definitely!
I've been here four or five times and each time I've thought to myself it's a little pricey but worth it.
The staff is friendly, there's a good selection of breakfast foods (egg whites, healthier meats in addition to the sausage and bacon and what not) and there's a wide selection of seating.
That just might be the best part, actually, in addition to the location (Coronado is something to behold!!). You can find a place on their main floor, which is where all the action is, or you can go outside and watch people walk their dogs, get a bit of sunshine and chat OR (this one's my fave) you can walk upstairs to the much quieter loft area. It's usually not nearly as packed and it's a great place to put your feet up and observe what's going on down below or just disengage altogether. I usually go up there with a book or some sudoko.
People bring their cutie pie little doggies in; it's a special treat to watch them trot about.
Great place. Great location, great food, good amount of food served to you and there is never, ever, ever a shortage of nice folks with whom to chat it up. Walking in alone is never a problem.
All in all a solid pick if you're ever in the Coronado area.
There's something about cafe's with numbers in their name that makes me want to check them out. Maybe its because I'm secretly amused by the fact that i can't remember the numbers and so i make up my own when referencing them to my friends in hopes that they understand what im saying.
love coronado. lOVED cafe 1134. I saw a picture on yelp was thought, meh, looks kind of small. But true to the reviews, the upstairs is SO CUTE and COZY unlike the balcony portion of claire de lune. The staff was friendly, and there's some seats outside to sit and chat and enjoy the wonderful coronado weather. Had the java chip frappe which was lighter then starbuck's and less sweet. the whip reminds me of peets but with more taste. its a winner! plus free wifi! and i saw some games there too!
Good coffee, a bar, and sidewalk seating. Equally popular with tourists and locals (the kind that will gently tap your elbow and strike up a conversation, sharing their 'Nado knowledge). From Cortez omelets to Tuscany paninis, and Chicken pecan or pasta salad -- delish, inexpensive, and simple breakfast/lunch fare. Check out the "secret" back patio.
I think that the last time I was in Coronado, I was probably a small child. I have vague memories of going to the beach and exploring around the Hotel Del. Bianca P. suggested that we go to Coronado for lunch, so we drove accross the bridge and stopped into Cafe 1134. Very cleverly titled by the way; the address is 1134 of course! While their name isn't very creative, their menu fortunately is. The barista, i suppose you would call him, was extremely helpful and friendly. He pointed out their specials and the fact that it was happy hour and booze was cheaper. Awesome. B ordered a mimosa and I had a Stone IPA, which another employee upon witnessing my selection exclaimed: "Best beer in America!" While that may be a bit of an overstatement, I can't say that I entirely disagree.
So booze aside, the food was really delicious as well. I had a terrible time deciding whether I wanted breakfast or lunch, both of which they serve all day. I ended up going with the Cortez (I think?) breakfast burrito. I was a tasty mix of egg, cheese, shrimp, avacado, and sour cream. They served it with a side of seasoned potatoes and a homemade salsa. I would have liked a little more salsa and probably would have gotten it had I asked, but I was more than satisfied that they had my amigo Tapatio. I may have a slight obsession with hot sauce. Just maybe.
I am a coffee house hopper. There are days I might visit three different locations. A change in scenery stimulates the creative mind. Plus there are different sort of dudes in San Diego's various neighborhoods. At a coffee shop in North park I enjoy men wearing women's jeans; downtown, you'd be surprised, there's some real lookers that wander in after their stop at the needle exchange program. And then there's Cafe 1134 in Coronado. Rich married men with nice cars who hate their wives. Fantastic.
I like Cafe 1134 for several reasons.
1. Location. It's Coronado people. Accessible paradise.
2. Free parking around the corner.
3. Great breakfast, granola to eggy burritos and pastries.
4. Reasonable prices
5. Club house feel on upper loft level complete with bench seating and tables of nice height for optimum typing.
6. Strong wi-fi
7. A bounty of electrical outlets.
8. I can enjoy a bike ride, come here for important email correspondence and breakfast, then hit the beach for some rays.
The coffee here is sub par. Drinkable. I can dress up a hammerhead with enough cream so that I don't have to tap into my weekend blow baggy.
What Cafe 1134 lacks in fine coffees and skilled baristas, it makes up for in fluffy omelets. The other day I enjoyed a shrimp, jack cheese and avocado variety; today, I went for black forest ham, mushroom and Swiss. All omelets are served with fresh fruit and while many locales don't bother with the quality of this accoutrement, the honeydew and cantaloupe melons are sweet and delightful. A side of salsa for the eggs is appreciated, quite spicy and smoky from chipotle.
There is a man to my right eating quiche. I will not order quiche here. I can tell it is overcooked and rubbery as his fork hand is sweating, knuckles white.
A friendly reminder about Coronado crowds. There's three categories really: geriatrics, rich family types with armies of children in tow, and tourists who are only good for buying me top shelf alcohols at The Del.
It goes without saying that children and the elderly are a drag. I find kids should generally be restrained or belong in the car, with windows down of course. Old folk should go to the library instead, it's just down the street and also smells funny, plus volunteer programs seem to interest these types.
The other day a group of women sat in the club house loft area by me. Now I am a diligent worker, but I couldn't't help but look up from my MacBook Pro on occasion. A handful of 40 somethings with nice earrings and pants from GAP spoke of disgusting topics such as parenting and school systems. There wasn't a dry eye at one point. I do not like when others make me feel ashamed for possessing a uterus. I thought things were on the up and up as those hussy teases all leaned in; instead of a tremendously sloppy and desperate house wife group kiss they held hands and prayed for over 10 minutes. I clutched my Lucifer pocket puppet extra hard and was able to resume work after deep breaths and a couple bites of cookie I found in my backpack.
Swell place with great sandwiches, good coffees and teas, and nice desserts. Popular before and after Lambs Players theatre events.
The downstairs can be a little hectic, but they bring your food to you--the upstairs is cute and cozy.
There's really not a lot to go on about--it's a fine little place with good food, nice location, and pleasant staff.
This coffeeshop just might make me change my travel patterns--Coronado's a pretty sweet spot! :)
On a windy, cold Saturday afternoon, I decided to find a cafe in Coronado, far from where I usually venture. I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Cafe 1134 is a little gem, a quaint, European-esque cafe in the middle of moneyed, stilted Coronado. I love Coronado's acres of Victorian homes, frighteningly wealthy people (who could probably drop my annual salary on a shopping trip here without blinking an eye), and the legions of touristas. Cafe 1134 is perfectly at home here, yet the staff are incredibly welcoming, the food is decent (if not exceptional), and the wifi is both free and consistent.
I found myself climbing the staircase loft, with its pleasant assortment of little tables to get my internet fix this afternoon, and warmed up with a hot peach rooibos tea. The servers are super friendly, and despite teh fact that the table next to me was occupied by a group of chatty women who loudly discussed their romantic and professional woes as if they were the provincial San Diego equivalent of Sex and the City, I found the day to be awesome.
If you're wondering if Cafe 1134 is worth it, I have one final piece of info that may convince you--if you take the drive, you'll find ample, albeit metered parking. And the meters? They cost 25 cents for an HOUR. That's right. None of this $1-$2/hour foolishness. 50 cents gets you the two hour time limit. Now that's a 50 cent-deal I can support, unlike Curtis.
Located right on Coronado's main street, Cafe 1134 is the place to meet in Coronado (I think every time school volunteers meet, this is the first place to be suggested!). There's seating on the sidewalk, inside (both downstairs and in the loft) and on a 'secret' back patio. We're locals who stop by every so often to enjoy a coffee, tea, or a light breakfast or lunch. The coffee is great, it's not a tea house (I say this with the caveat that I am an admitted tea snob!), and the breakfasts and lunches are good. Nothing stellar, but quite decent. The loft can get darn hot in when the weather is warm, but when it's cooler, it's cozy.
So I'm now addicted to their food. It's excellent! So surprisingly good and fresh, every time I order something I can't believe how rad this place is. I'm a huge fan of their paninis and (tuna) salads. They also make a mean California breakfast burrito. All of their dishes come with sides, like soup, chips, or potato salad. Opt for the potato salad, you will be pleased. Oh yes, and their dessert selection is upscale and fantastic.

Great coffee, awesome location, cute atmosphere, and attentive and genuine staff. I work next door… Read more »
Nice enough coffee shop. Seems relaxing enough, and is open later than most things that are closed by SEVEN O'CLOCK locally. However, if you need to buy a whole cake, this is not the place. They serve [delicious] slices, but the cost of a whole cake comes to just over $60! For goodness sakes, this isn't Ace of Cakes!
But, when you're not a local and the Vons nearby lacks a bakery, and you're running out of time, you have to be willing to spend some dough before you can eat it.
Now, I hear there's an Albertson's, too... Oh well.
i often end up here on my lunch break. it is my refuge on busy work days. the music relaxes me, and i enjoy the soups (corn chowder, veggie lentil), salads (cobb, spinach) and sandwiches (tuna curry, turkey & swiss). it gets a little hot in the summer, and you will definitely not see me there on the 4th of july - but i don't know what i would do without Cafe 1134.
This is one of those establishments, rare in America, that functions as a restaurant and coffee-shop, and also serves alcohol. I'm not quite sure why the other reviewer checked the "None" box...I don't know about everything else but this place definitely serves beer.
The food here is really quite good, and very good value for your money. The mexican food was top-notch, with fresh veggies, lots of flavor, and a killer salsa verde. The baked goods are high-quality and reasonably priced. In my opinion, the food here is the best quality for my money that I've found so far on Coronado.
As a coffee shop? Way ahead of Starbucks but not quite as good as it could get. They use high-end teabag tea, for instance.
The atmosphere is very nice. I wish there were more outdoor tables, as they fill up quickly, but there is plenty of seating indoors, including a little indoor balcony upstairs.
I give this place five stars not because it is a five star restaurant or five star coffee shop, but because it seems to fill multiple roles and do them all well...which I think is admirable.
Def my favorite place to meet up with a potential client or friend and sit for hours. This place has GREAT food, and the atmosphere is comfortable and casual. The staff is super friendly and the little loft upstairs is perfect.
The protein shake is delish BTW.
A quaint cafe right on Orange Ave. in Coronado.
Bustling and cute,
it hosts a variety of food and coffee drinks I adore,
with prices to match.
Plus, super yummy treats!
Cozy goodness filled w/ a mix of locals and tourists.
Great jasmine tea, smallish food, and an upstairs area. Also a little back patio w/plants/flowers, and assorted what-not.
I would run a tab here if I lived closer, it's a find.
We stopped in after dinner. Good coffee and great service. Open and relaxing atmosphere.
If I lived in Coronado I would be a regular.
What a little gem in Coronado. Myself and 2 out town friends were visiting the quaint Coronado Island and happened upon this cafe. We had a fantastic lunch! Laura and I both had the Tuscany Panini which had roast beef topped with blue cheese on fresh herb bread. Sharon had the Roma panini with turkey and cheese. We all raved about our sandwiches. Each panini was accompanied by your choice of side dish, soup, potato salad, pasta salad or fruit. We each got a different side and they were all good. I think Sharon enjoyed her clam chowder the most.
The portions were huge, but somehow we each managed to force down every last bite. Sharon and Laura each had a glass of chardonnay for $3.00 and the Panini with a side is between $7 and $8.
The atmosphere inside is a little French country meets a little modern. It was cozy and the service was good. Check it out if you want a delicious and affordable lunch.
It's like a coffee shop...for your mom. Filled with Suits on their lunch break and talkie-talk ladies.
Good for coffee, not when you're hungry. And what's the deal with every place in California filling sandwiches with lettuce and sprouts, but no meat, and insisting that everything be served open-faced and falling onto the plate? And all of the people that bring dogs into restaurants? They're healthy, but not sanitary?
It looked like they had a decent happy hour, which brought in the crowd.
This place is absolutely adorable! The upstairs loft was ideal for studying: had free wi-fi and an outlet strip. And plenty of board games for study breaks! I ordered the chocolate almond mint black tea, which was kind of a weird mishmash of flavors. I'm not sure if I'd ever order it again. I also had a slice of the chocolate chip cheesecake, and that was spectacular!
Tourists come in here. So do locals with dogs, and retirees whose property values probably jumped the amount of my annual income in the time it takes to drink their coffee.
I don't care. I like this place. There's always a table, they have free wi-fi and there's no attitude. The food is unremarkable but it's not expensive either. And Coronado has cheap parking meters.
This is one of my favorite places on the island. From just stopping in to grab some coffee or tea to grabbing lunch with some friends for some soup of panini. It although gets kindda warm on the top floor during the summer. But it has a great ambiance and the people there are just so friendly and helpful =)
la la la love this place! boyfriend and i, sometimes the roomie too, come here for saturday morning breakfast. ok sometimes we go on sundays but in essence it's a great lil coffee shop/cafe with really good breakfast selections. inexpensive and tasty. i would suggest the seville omelette or breakfast sandwich. they have an awesome selection of tea too which i totally appreciate because i just wont allow myself coffee on the weekends.
it can get a bit crowded but they crank out the food pretty fast. another great thing about this cafe is that you pay first and seat yourself. My man especially likes this because he hates having to wait to pay for the check.
it's located right on orange st. next to some really cute shops so it's nice to peruse the shops after a good breakfast. there are lots of good lil diner/cafes in coronado but this one seems a little more upbeat than the others.
cute little cafe in the middle of town. there are a few dog friendly seats outside that would make the place a perfect spot to people watch on a lazy saturday afternoon. the spots outside were taken, though, so my friend and i sat inside. the cafe itself is two-tiered, so there's plenty of seats inside. we also discovered a little garden in the back patio, which seemed to be designated for smokers.
the coffee itself is nothing to rave about, but it was pretty okay. for all of you who appreciate coffee served up in a porcelain mug, cafe 1134 will do that for you. with my coffee i had a slice of their chocolate ganache + crunch cake, which was good but nothing extraordinary. it seemed like something you could've gotten from Costco (and, that's a good thing in my eyes. haha!).
overall, it's a good Starbucks alternative. and, i suppose, a way to feel like one of the locals.
The local coffeehouse. Good coffee, great treats. Can get crowded. Friendly staff.
If you want a local crowd in Coronado, this is the place to hang...great coffee, great snacks, great conversation whether you are local or not. I visited here before I became a resident, it only made me want to move more...
Local coffee shop hangout. Everything you would expect from a trendy coffee shop with alternative rock music and funky decor.
so this place is really great. they have meals and food and stuff, but their specialty is coffee, tea, smoothies, and other beverages. it has this atmosphere of bliss yet its still somewhat chaotic. you can plug in your laptop and sip their amazing acai smoothies or eat an AMAZING neopolitan pizza. in their downstairs or upstairs seating areas, or even take a seat at the bar or the outside tables. the staff is funny, the service is quick, and the location is right by the hotel del. i like to grab something here before i go the sunday concerts at the park down the street. i love it here, i love it! haha.
