Washington, DC
Six of us dined here for dinner this week. We ordered a lot of entrees so we could try multiple items. We had come here regularly years ago, and were eager to revisit the old favorite. It did not disappoint!
First, the staff could not have been nicer. Met us at the door to seat us. Offered us a booth when initially we were about to be seated at a table. Took our many orders perfectly, including the requests for "on the side" -- and got it all correct.
Croque Monsiuer, Croque Madame, Croque New Yorker, Quiche, Avocat Farci - were all delicious.
Dessert continues to be my favorite...the "meringue" which is like a sweet wafer cookie layered with light sugary meringue ... repeat 4 times. It's the best. Chocolate mouse, gorgeous fruit tarts of many varieties, and a giant apple tart were lovely as well.
In all a very relaxing dinner in a lovely neighborhood bistro. We will return! -

This is a cute french place. Outdoor patio is very nice. Service is friendly.
Limited choices for brunch. Food is just okay. But dessert is very good.
Pricey for what you get. -
Review from Sally M.
A friend was in-town visiting this past weekend, and I had remembered loving Cafe La Ruche's ambiance the last time I lived in the Washington DC area, but after living in San Francisco the past 4 years, I was deeply disappointed. Though the prices were the same as my beloved La Boulange in NorCal, the food quality and even the ambiance paled in comparison. And neither of these attributes - food/ingredients nor ambiance/decor - came even close to my favorite French - Zazie.
I inquired about where the fish was from, and how it was caught, and instead of answering my questions, or even attempting a respectful reply, the waiter and manager patronized me with flirtation, of which I was most unimpressed and irritated. Typical misogyny and sillyness, on the part of males in "the South" as I have now realized I am back in, but alas, I will fold, as I cannot single handedly fight this battle alone - still, he looked at me like this question was the first time anyone had asked. Obviously evidence that this was mere tourist quality "food".
I ordered the SOUPE A L'OIGNON GRATINEE, which was not even of as good as quality of that from the hotel restaurant lounge at my Marriott in New Jersey (where I stay on business during the week), and the QUICHE AUX EPINARDS, since I was distrusting of both the fish, meat and chicken sources - how it was raised, where it was from, etc. I was not impressed with the quiche, and again, it was not even on par with La Boulange, which is akin to a "chain" in San Francisco, and most reasonably priced, and of the same caliber as "Starbucks" in many cities.
Apologies for my harsh criticism, but I will not lower my standards just because others are OK eating potential pink slime. -

Very cute little French restaurant in Georgetown. I came here with a group and immediately though "Damn, this would be a great place to take a date"! Although the place is small it doesn't feel cramped, especially with the ample outdoor seating. The service is attentive and good, but as Hannah C. points out, they don't hover over you like at other restaurants.
First I had the french onion soup. While it was definitely good, it was not the best soup I've had. The broth was missing some flavor that I've found at other places like Bistro du Coin, but nevertheless I enjoyed gulping down the heaping pile of melted gruyere. Next up were the escargot, served in an oily and garlicky sauce which really brought out the flavor of the little mollusks. Despite being "just entrees," the meals filled me up well. I also tried my friend's croque monsieur... brilliant. But naturally, my dessert stomach was rumbling for something.
I treated myself to a chocolate mousse, incredibly rich in flavor and smooth in texture. I tasted some of my friends' desserts and they were all pretty good, but I think I enjoyed the mousse the best. In all, our lunch ran on the slightly pricier side but it was still reasonable and worth it. -

Didn't find this place as enchanting as everyone says it is, but maybe it's because we were seated inside instead of the outdoor garden. I ordered the crab quiche and subsequently found out that I am not a huge fan of quiches. I like that it came with a salad on the side though. My companion had the croque monsier which he seemed to enjoy but found somewhat overwhelming. In all, I paid about $17 for my meal which seems steep for just a quiche and a unsavory salad.

Came here for brunch and the waitress recommended the spinach quiche. It was way too cheesy and just ok for a quiche. My boyfriend got the scrambled eggs, sausage and croissant, and it wasn't that great. Would rather go to Dean and Deluca which is not too far away from here.

After a big meal, we didn't want to just end the night so we decided to seek sweets. We heard about "Cafe La Ruche" from a friend and decided to head down to Georgetown and get a taste of what they had to offer.
In a pretty fun part of town, CLR was located on a side street right off the main road. No reservation was made nor needed as we walked into a moderately busy hole in the wall (on a saturday night). Nothing too crazy with decor; the lighting was a bit on the bright side and tables were somewhat close to one another. Immediately noticed a large TV next to the bar with a sports program playing; it didn't quite fit in the big scheme of things and looked out of place.
We weren't hungry for a meal, but decided to glance over the menu anyway. They kept it simple with a good list of french cuisine. After a few minutes, we proceeded to the dessert display and saw some of their pastries. We order their Fruit Tart and Chocolate Mousse coupled with a glass of white wine and the "La Ruche" cappuccino.
Desserts were "just" OK and drinks were sub-par. I'm giving it 2 stars because it just didn't do it for me in terms of their dessert and service. But I'm willing to give them another shot and try their lunch/dinner menu the next time I visit DC. -

J'adore. This is a quaint French-inspired cafe tucked away in a little corner in Georgetown. I love the outdoor patio and the French countryside interior. I've had the quiche, croque monseiur, and dessert so far. The food is a bit meh -- ok but not spectacular.
The service, however, makes this place a solid lunch spot if you're in and around Georgetown. The waiters are very courteous, unobtrusive, and obviously well-trained.
Verdict: Decent lunch spot at decent (for Georgetown) prices. The atmosphere is better than Cafe Madeleine. -

It's amazing how this place is just as good now as it was the first time I had visited this place some 10 years ago. Since it rates five stars in all areas, I'm not certain with which to start. Since food is my favorite, I'll start with this area. For an appetizer, the two choices I would recommend are as follows: the brie cheese with apple slices and snails (escargot) sauteed with mushrooms and garlic. The spinach or ham quiches are both good and filling.
A coffee and dessert is always a must to end a meal for me here. They have an array of desserts located in their display. Although my favorite is usually the fruit tart, I always like what else might spark my interest.
As for the location and ambiance, they score high. Although both the indoor and outdoor seating provide a quaint scenery, I prefer the outdoor. It's located on the side of the restaurant so it's a bit more secluded. I get the feeling of eating outside of a cottage in France.
Another area they score high is their service. Everyone has been very nice (even throughout all the years.) It's pretty impressive. -

This place is a really good date place -- tucked away, it's really quaint and has low noise volume. Also, a great place to go for a dinner and a movie date, as it's a block away from the AMC theatre in Georgetown.
We used a http://Restaurant.com gift certificate, but both agreed it would be worth it to come back (which I guess is the point of http://restaurant.com -- well played, sir), especially for the happy hour special (great food and drink deals).
As it was, I got the Tilipia that was the daily special, and delicious with just enough flavor, and my boyfriend got the Cordon Bleu -- both our plates were completely empty by the end of the meal so, yeah, I guess you can say we liked it. -

This is such a nice relaxing place to sit and relax!
Needed a break from all the walking around town and found this cute french cafe. Wasn't too hungry, so I opted for the coffee and desserts menu. Was a little overwhelmed by the selections they have and asked our waitress what she recommended.
She told me "Everything is good. But I like the Mixed Fruit Tart. You should go inside and see what you like at the display."
Me being the lazy self I am, just went with her recommendations, and ordered:
- Cappuccino 3.95
- Mixed Fruit Tart 6.95
Even though it is a little on the pricey side, both items were delicious, and I definitely enjoy relaxing there. I would highly recommend this restaurant to whoever that needs to relax. Perfect setting for a nice relaxing lunch date or just to sit there and curl up with a book. -

Very quaint place. The kind of bistro we like to visit when we do other towns on road trips. Seeps of culture.

The food was okay -- I had a crepe and some steamed mussels. Neither was fantastic, but they were both more than edible.
What I really liked about Café La Ruche was the ambiance. I came on a cold, rainy day and it's a great cozy little spot. And while it didn't dry my soggy pants out, I was certainly comfortable while I slowly nibbled at my food and slowly dried out. -

cozy seating area, delicious desserts, friendly service. i stand by my four stars.
i came here for brunch with the boy. we like this place. a lot. i can't add a whole lot of additional info that wasn't already included in my previous review. let me just say that i still love their dining room and their attentive-but-not-intrusive service.
regarding the food, remember that this place has a very limited brunch menu. you're not going to find a huge serve-yourself table with chafing dishes and everything. it's one page. that's the menu. the desserts continue to rock my world.
i will continue coming to cafe la ruche for years. love it!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Katie Y.
A warm summer Sunday evening was the perfect setting for outdoor seating in the petite and cozy patio at Cafe La Ruche. We weren't starving, just in the mood for light fare and a brew. One beer, one croque monsieur and one onion soup later, we were sated, satisfied, and happy to sign a check for $25 total that filled both of us for a dinner in Georgetown. Service was speedy enough to get us in, fed, and out in time to catch our movie down the street. All in all, it was a successful dinner outing and we would do it again.

Cafe La Ruche is a small, cozy, well lit french restaurant nestled in lower Georgetown.
Walking into this spot, the first thing I noticed was the overwhelming cheeriness of the decor; a large amount of light from the tall windows and the light colored furniture/floors provide a smart and colorful background. Other reviewers also have reveled in the "cuddlefest" of ambiance this restaurant enjoys.
Food here is very satisfying. Typical french cuisine such as the croque monseiur (ham with mornay sauce (cased in cheese, monte cristo style) and a decadent quiche are very good; however, the best part of this spot are the service (impeccably polite and friendly) and the sun drenched outdoor patio, great for summer mornings before the DC heat rolls in. The dessert counter is also impressive, featuring lots of home made pastries.
Worth a visit for breakfast/brunch. -

I returned for brunch.
I still love that it's tucked into a quiet side street and that there is ample outdoor seating.
However... the food sucked. I was not won over by the omelet or the dessert. The OJ tasted like Tang. $17.95 for the brunch special... Eh...
The crowd was older... Some families... It was a nice place to sit and catch up with a friend...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great service, amazing desserts, a very cozy area to sit. I came here along with my fiancee and was impressed by the coziness. Service was great, although the food could have been a little better. For the price that we paid for each plate, I was expecting something a lot better than what we got. This place is nice to go grab a dessert and a cappuccino.

Fantastic date place. Cozy and quaint. The mussels were very good and the sauce was beat for dipping, however the entrecôte want just ok. All in all, this is an excellent joint off the Beaten path.

Cute little French café right off of M St. in Georgetown. The outdoor patio is an ideal spot for a lunch date or reading a book by yourself. I have had the crab quiche which was ok, to me it was a bit heavy on the butter but that's French cooking for you folks. The fish soup was refreshing, the French onion was great, and the duke pate was a bit off for me.
Their desserts look nice but I have yet to try them. They along with Bistro François have been in business for a number of years and have been acclaimed with serving authentic French food. I semi agree with that assessment. I would recommend giving it a chance, especially if you are an enthusiast of French cuisine.
The service was spot on and the prices are fair. All in all an average restaurant in an average part of town (when it comes to food). -

Reston, VA
I was rather impressed with their food, given some of the lackluster reviews I've read on here. I had the croquet monsieur, which is basically a French ham and cheese sandwich cooked to perfection. Totally filling and worth the $9.95 price-- though the house salad was just ok.
The wine selection, however, was a bit disappointing.. particularly for a French(!) restaurant. I had to send the first bottle of riesling back as it was really bland tasting. The chardonnay wasn't much better but far superior to the aforementioned riesling... hence the 4 star rating.
All in all a good experience, though I'd come more for the food and desserts than for the wine. Highly recommended. -

Washington D.C., DC
I went to cafe La Ruche last Friday with my boyfriend. My initial thought was that the butter packets and plastic water glasses made this place feel cheap and gave me low expectations for the quality of food. I would also advise them to warm the bread rolls.
Aside from those small details, the evening was great! We ordered two bowls of French onion soup (delicious) and shared the crab quiche and salad. The quiche was bursting with crab chunks (mmm)...they definitely didn't skimp and it was outstanding. The salad was pretty simple: salad and a few red pepper slices with a mustard sauce (nothing too special there). The owner of the restaurant came by to say hello. Maybe since it was the end of the night (we got there at 9:30 pm) and they were trying to get rid of some food, they gave us a free plate with brie and pear slices, fun to eat with the bread rolls! I ordered a Manhattan and as they served it, they gave a free extra short glass full of the same drink so I could refill my martini glass. These perks, plus the friendly owner, and the delicious food, made our night really fun.
I think that this restaurant could get even better reviews if they worked on the small details. I guess that's why the place is called a café, a less formal feel. I've heard they have a great brunch so I'd love to return for that! Their desserts and coffee also look pretty amazing. -

Food - 5 stars. Service - 3 stars. My mom and I ate here after a movie at Georgetown. The food was amazing--we both had the spinach quiche, and also split a bowl of French Onion soup. Service was questionable. First, we ordered a bottle of white wine & he brought out red. No big deal, he quickly brought out the correct bottle. It took forever to get our food--literally the couple next to us sat down, ordered, and paid before we got our soup. I think the waiter forgot to put in the order, which I won't give him too much hassle for because I did that once as a waitress and remember feeling awful about it. Anyway, when we finally asked where our our soup was it was brought out within 5 minutes and the quiche shortly followed.
The price was definitely right--our bottle of wine, two quiches, & bowl of soup came to $60 pre-tip (with the wine taking up half of that). Overall, one of the better spots in Georgetown. -

I offer only that the ham sandwich was tasty but everything else lacked beyond compare.
I arrived on a Thursday afternoon around 1:30 PM with no one in the place. It has been cold and cloudy so i was seeking a place to relax, read my paper (electronically) and eat lunch with coffee.
First there is no wifi and the overall signal is terrible. I ordered coffee straight away. Followed y my sandwich and then again for coffee. My food came and I ate it though waited for my coffee. I asked and were told they were making it and was brought water.
Long story short -- I completed my meal and still no coffee. The check came and the $2.50 on the bill was for coffee. I stated it never came and was told that I had ordered it I had to pay for it. I said I ordered it an hour ago and was told that was not their fault. -

K I ate here about 5 months ago so I'm not going to have all the best details but my wife is biiig time foodie and fluent in french and yada yada and neither of us liked our meals here. The service was very slow and the meat was dry and of course the meal wasn't cheap being in g-town. I would have expected more is all.

Ate lunch here with BF + friends this past Inauguration weekend. Two words: Crab Quiche. DELISH.
Also, Cafe La Ruche is really heavy handed with the liquor in their specialty drinks (mixed coffee drinks, apple cider with rum, etc.). My friend's hot apple cider was something like 70% rum and 30% cider. For me that = yuck, but I don't usually like to be boozed up until after dinner.Listed in: My Hood, The Fastest Way to a Woman's…

Came for a quiet lunch in Georgetown. This is one of my go to places for decent French food in the area. It's small, and sort of tucked away, and on some mornings, it's packed. The food is pretty good, not stunning, but good enough to sell, and as I said, French.
The service is also good by French standards, which is to say they're gonna leave you alone until you ask for the check for the most part. No hovering.
The food is 3 stars, but the service and ambiance is 4.5 so I rounded up.
So if you're looking for a little cafe in which to have lunch in Georgetown without much pretense (I said, "much", we are after all in Georgetown)... Come here. -
Review from Mikkela T.
Quiche gets five stars. Apple tart gets three. Service gets two (I'm not expected a little Frounche mssr twirling about but I prefer not to get a Stalinistic attention to getting my credit card -- it's stressful, and with a nearly empty cafe, unnecessary, post haste).
Otherwise, this place is very Georgetonnie. You can wear your fur coat here (in 65 F weather) and no one would find it amiss. The prices are standard for the area (Cafe au lait: $3.95; quiche: $8.50 and "Trate Au Pommes": $6.95 -- stop laughing! Are you an English?) -
Review from Ina C.
My 6 glorious years of French study never taught me the word ruche. I had to refer to my second best friend Google Translator, who told me that "ruche" means "hive" - a fitting name for this nook by the C&O Canal.
Interesting how the reviews before June '07 give it at least 4 stars, and reviews after that fateful month have plummeted. Pourquois? This used to be a regular stop for me when I was in Georgetown. If I was hungry, I ate here. If I wanted dessert after dinner somewhere else, I ate dessert here. I really loved the atmosphere, and of course the French-speak.
I'm going to go against the grain and say some nice things about this restaurant because they've been a friend to me whenever I brought out-of-town friends, foodie friends, boyfriend, food-critic-wanna-be brother and parents. The food isn't earth-shatteringly delicious, and neither is the price all that high. So in my opinion, decent food + decent price = a place where Ina will continue to dine.
I will attribute the lack of good service that other Yelpers have experienced to a bad day. Or...days. :) I've never received service like that in all of the 10+ times that I've been here.
[Seamless transition to...] Ina mantra #8: If there are conflicting reviews about a restaurant, it's still worth a shot. :)Listed in: Ina-sized Portions, Al Fresco Dining

Cafe La Ruche is a little French bistro on 31st street in the heart of Georgetown. Meals, from their warmed rolls and butter, entrees, all the way to coffee and their selection of decadent desserts, never seem to disappoint.
When I eat lunch at Cafe La Ruche, I usually like to start with the Gazpacho or Potage Parisien soup, which are lite enough to enjoy even on the hottest DC summer day. Entrees range from simple sandwiches like Sandwich au Jambon (Ham on french bread), quiches and their extremely comforting Chicken Cordon Bleu. I order religiously from the daily specials. Sauteed salmon and trout are frequently served and are among my favorites.
Service has typically been friendly and good. Even at lunch, it feels like dining rather than just eating. If you have the time and the room in your stomach, definitely check out the dessert display. But word to the wise, it is easy to be sucked into its sugary tractor beam. -

Another one for the "Island of Lost Restaurants." Je ne comprends pas! This place has all the makings to be great but it fell short in so many ways! Me-thinks the owner is too old to control the staff and maintain the integrity of what was probably once a great place.
Why it was tres terrible:
Waited almost 15 minutes for a waiter to greet our table.
Ordered wine (white)...was warm and the waiter did not have the faintest clue how to perform proper bottle service - a sad, sad, thing at restaurant that so proudly waves a French flag outside. This was after waiting about 10 more minutes for the wine.
When the "special" sauvignon blanc arrived I discovered it was from South Africa! Don't get me wrong, I love SA whites but REALLY?!?! at a French place?
The menu was unimaginative and probably hasn't been revised in 10 years+.
I chose to go safe and ordered a ham and cheese quiche (normally I would have gone with the crab but they proved untrustworthy). It was LAME. Lacked taste, was greasy, and just not worth the calories. Same went for the Cordon Bleu ordered by the other diner with me.
The server was among the worst ever! Never asked us if we were happy, never refilled our waters, and we basically had to get up to ask for our check - they were not busy, by the way. Two words for the service - BLISSFULLY UNAWARE.
The only reason it got two stars is because the courtyard is adorable, the old man (I believe to be the owner) is adorable, and they had an amusing chap playing the guitar outside.
I think the only way I would return was for red wine in the fall and expecting terrible service. -

Cafe La Ruche. I love saying its name with an accent.
When I was living in DC I used to cross by this place often and always wanted to go there. So when the time came to leave DC, I finally decided to check this place out for dinner.
It has a cozy little cottage feel, wooden floors, concrete walls, and to top it off live music.
I do not recall what or how much I ordered or what the food tasted like but I do remember to this day how I felt and it was remarkable (anyone would if there is a guy singing to you with his guitar)
I remember it being fairly crowded but not unbearably loud. I think this café is one of those places where you want to go relax have a nice conversation but not feel the only ones there at the same time. -

San Jose, CA
"I've experienced better" is exactly how I would describe my visit to La Ruche.
First off, the wine selection was not as ample as I would've expected at a French bistro. Only a few choices were available by the glass, and I was not happy by either of the choices I made. For my main meal I got the mushroom quiche, served with a side salad. It was very oily, and as usual, I have a problem with the excessive use of oil. The way I see it, it's just too easy to make something taste savory by just overwhelming it with oil... so no pass. For dessert I felt like something light and sweet to take away the greasy feeling from my mouth, so I got the chocolate mousse. They brought out a small ball of very thick looking chocolate... as if they had gotten a candy bar and melted it in the microwave. And topped it with whipped cream. After a few spoonfuls I was done. Forever.
I was mostly sad that I missed out on trying any of the other great places around Georgetown in order to eat at La Ruche. Oh well, now I know.
The only points La Ruche gets are for the athmosphere, which is very quaint and relaxed, located off of the usual chaos of M Street.
