Big plates, NM flavor, and friendly service that sums up the place.
If you go after 11, your wait time is significant reduced. People flock to this place for brunch repeated and you can't blame them. It's a must eatery.
Notably refreshing/disarming is that Cadillac is missing the always amusing/sometimes annoying Portland 'tude that a lot of breakfast joints seem to have. (I have been eating out breakfast everyday at a different place since I moved here, I HATE money)
Rather than a chick with a sleeve and a dude with tasseled hair and irregular facial growth, the wait staff here look like people at your Dad's office. Interesting.
Food was very good, but nothing really "special". I don't know how to really explain it. I got huckleberry pancakes (which came with a little shroom/chicken scramble...nice touch). They were good, but not really AMAZING, and were kinda pricey (about $12, not expensive...but it seems like a lot for two pancakes right?).
Service was very efficient and I could barely drink my coffee without it being filled every 4 seconds, they definitely take care of you here!
Came here on a Monday with my cousin and friends for brunch, and decided to pick this place since I got good reviews on http://yelp.com
It's a nice high ceiling restaurant with a big old CADILLAC car (REAL) inside the place. Clear celings so you can see the dailight, open kitchen and fast and friendly staff.
First thing's first.... Need to order the PEAR MIMOSA (yeah you heard, PEAR) it's sooo good that i don't want the regular mimosas anymore!, my cousin in law order a milk shake and it was to DIE for!, I don't know what they put in it but it was really good!.
For brunch I had a Hazelnut French TOAST (YUM YUM) and It was soo delicious and fresh!, came with an egg and bacon, also the burrito looked good (perfect porpotion), The Omelettes here and good too!, and the Blueberry pancakes!. I can't explain it to you but If simple comfort food. Good thing I had a big group of people coming and was able to try them all! it was Made to perfection. We all went in hungry and came out happy after the meal!, everything from drinks, to food was great!.
The food was perfect. Good choice. Very busy. A bit loud. Tight tables. Good looking servers. My coffee was never empty. Very good price for the quality. Cute neighborhood too.
We always do breakfast at least once at Cadillac's when in Portland. The food and service is always excellent and this time did not disappoint.
I got the meat omelet which was excellent. Three kinds of meat, cheese, and caramelized onions. Instead of potatoes, I got the side of fruit and this was by far the best fruit bowl we have gotten. Very ripe blackberries, raspberries, pineapple, honeydew, cantaloupe, and strawberries.
While they do not have a kids menu, the waitress recommended ordering the kids a single pancake for each kids. When they arrived, they were pancakes with ears, grape eyes, butter nose, and melon mouths. Very cool little touches.
My wife got the custard french toast and insists it is always a winner.
They are busy, so get there early, get your name in, and bring your paper to read outside, but it is well worth the wait.
Great food, great service, and good atmosphere make this a place to not miss for breakfast.
First off I'm a little bias to this place. I've been going here for years, 15 plus from back when it was on 9th. The food and service is still amazing as always. Tastes the same from when I was a kid. A good start would be the bunkhouse vittles, offers a good sample of tastey treats. The food, service, and atmosphere will speak for themselves. If you get stuck waiting, don't worry it's worth it! Definitly a must try if you haven't already, enjoy!
Great food. Great service. Will def recommend. Always a wait and seating at the bar is first come first serve and can get a little cut throat haha but well worth the blood!
These guys serve an amazing breakfast. You can't go wrong, especially on a cold winter morning. This is what I call comfort food.
On weekends come early or be prepared to wait. While your waiting you can stare at the giant pink Cadillac in the back of the restaurant. I
The owner's of the Cadillac Café are two gay men. They dressed up as Catholic priests for Halloween......Awkward
The concierge of the Crowne Plaza Hotel recommended this place. They specifically said, "This restaurant is a local have-to!"
So the driver scooped us up and took us there (which is about 10 blocks away).
We get there, and it looks a bit on the trendy side, but what doesnt? it is Downtown Portland.
We get seated, and while lookin over the menu, i was captivated. Amongst a jungle of salads, sandwiches, and burgers, i see the Cadillac Mac n Cheese. and if you want, there's a side of FILLET MIGNON...!! Daaaaayyyuuuummm....!!!!
so i get that, my buddies order the cadillac burgers, and Salmon fish n chips.
the mac n cheese was extra cheeeesy and the fillet mignon was cooked perfectly.
and the best part was that it was under $20 with a coke. And even better, they don't charge TAX here...!!! hahahhahaa
freakin awesome...!!!!!
My first thought walking into Cadillac Cafe was that the decor made you feel like you were in a hotel restaurant for continental breakfast... there really wasn't a charm to the ambiance... and though the food at Cadillac's is far superior to hotel cuisine, I had an overall OK experience.
Coming in for brunch on a weekday, the restaurant was fairly busy but we were seated and offered drinks right away from the friendly staff. We were starving, eager to eat and definitely pleased that our food came soon after we ordered... however as I mentioned, everything was just OK...
My friend ordered the traditional breakfast that consisted of eggs, toast and potatoes. It was a solid dish, but not outstanding. I ordered the hazelnut french toast based on what others have suggested me to try... and though it was good I found it to be way too sweet, and trust me, I have a pretty big sweet tooth!
Cadillac Cafe is a good place for brunch if you're in the neighborhood, but with all of Portland's other outstanding brunch options, I couldn't say that I'd come back...
Our old neighborhood standby. The service is pretty swell and you see minimal turnover.
Lovely custard french toast, great bacon and my fave...Kobos coffee!
Hint: Go before 9AM!
I really love the Cadillac Cafe. The wait can be long. But that's true for any of the breakfast spots in town serving amazing everything!
I love the Vittles, Albert's Eggless, The Breakfast Burrito, The French Toast, the chicken apple sausage. I could go on but that will get you started.
Seriously, if you haven't checked this place out yet. Do it.
Here's something I've never quite been able to wrap my mind around. They've parked a pink Cadillac behind a glass barrier at the back of the restaurant. It's like one of those ships in a bottle. How did they get it in there? Did they build the restaurant around a real, functioning Cadillac, or did they build a Cadillac replica behind that glass? And what's the glass doing there anyway? Are they really afraid that someone's going to jump into the driver's seat and take the thing for a spin? "Excuse me, sir? Sir? Please step out of the vehicle. This is a family restaurant."
Anyway, the food is good, but not exciting enough that I'm ever really thinking, "Oh boy, oh boy, I wanna go to the Cadillac!" Still, they serve heaping portions of great breakfast food, and I'm always delighted by the experience there. I typically go with the Albert's Eggless -- with eggs. It's basically a hash heap about chest high with the option of a couple of fried eggs on top. Glorious. My significant is partial to the French Toast, which is plenty worthy of the fame it's garnered here on yelp. Big, fat slabs of eggy, sweet toast. Don't make any big plans the day you go, because you're probably going to want to take a good, long nap after eating there.
Lunch is adequate, but, like I said, not terribly inspired. Decent mac and cheese, interesting salmon fish & chips, and a bunch of pretty boring-looking sandwiches. But you know what, those are just there for show -- the Cadillac is all about breakfast. It doesn't matter what time it is, just focus on breakfast.
And then schedule a nap afterward.
It's been said that the first time of anything is always the sweetest-- be it falling in love or sharing a kiss or getting a paycheck. My first breakfast visit at the Cadillac Cafe is just that.
[AMBIANCE] Bright lights in a cavernous space, but partitioned in such a way that you don't necessarily see everybody all at once unless you're standing. The sounds and scents from the open kitchen is alluring, and the fireside seating section seems perfect for dining with your sweetie or even for some alone time. The full-sized Cadillac, parked in a museum-style enclosure toward the rear-- complete with faux winter scene-- is a nostalgic, whimsical touch. Although I'm more accustomed to the darker, smaller cafes and diners that exude more character, the Cadillac feels homey and familiar.
[FOOD] They offer a wide selection of eats during the most important meal of the day. I opted for their Salmon & Eggs specialty item, because eating a northwest-tinged choice seems natural. The salmon was lightly grilled, its moist interior revealed after each initial crunch. The breakfast potatoes were sparsely seasoned, and my over-medium eggs were done beautifully. The portions probably could've been larger, but it was certainly a very filling ensemble.
[SERVICE] Unlike many of the smaller cafes/diners that I frequent, the Cadillac does not have hipster-wannabes sluggishly meandering the tables, making it known to every customer that they don't necessarily want to be there that morning. Instead, you are surrounded by cheerful, almost Denny's-like "seasoned" servers who smile and maintain eye contact during conversations, and seem to genuinely acknowledge you, their customer, is their raison d'etre. My server ("Kat") actually positioned the handle of my coffee cup "at 4 o'clock" (industry folk would know what this means) and was nearly omnipotent.
The only thing that could make this place even better is if they served Stumptown coffee. I wasn't feeling the Kobos at all. Apart from that, the Cadillac Cafe is a sure bet for comfortable, delicious, and affordable dining.
Breakfast joints in Portland can be a little rough around the edges. Dark, a little seedy, just the place to nurse your hang-over with a bloody mary and lots of black coffee.
That's not Cadillac Cafe. This is the breakfast place you take your mom for Sunday brunch. It's all tidy and clean-cut and shiny. But don't let that deter you! The menu has ample choices and the food is first rate. There's even a fair variety of mixed drinks if you're looking for a fancy mimosa to liven up your morning.
Expect a crowd on the weekends; the tiny lobby in front of the hostess stand quickly becomes SRO.
Fabulous and filling. We ordered the hazelnut french toast which melts in your mouth and the pancakes which are so fluffy and delicious and taste like yellow cake. Oh My Gawd! Will be back post haste.
This is a typical diner that is consistently good for a quick heavy breakfast. I'd come here again in a pinch for a bite to eat.
Nice old school Cadillac on display inside the restaurant.
Great place. I read the recomendation from my blog and just walking into the place is astheticly pleasing. Very unique being that there is a Cadillac in the middle of it. I chose the Cajun catfish. Sitting there I noticed a huge room of people just killing their plates until my food came. and it was almost like God had sent down this meal just for me. I ate that plate so fast I started to think I was in a food-eating competetion. So I'm gonna start rating places on 4 things: 1. Apperance; 2. Food; 3. Service; 4. Overall feeling.
The apperance was awsome. Nothing too fancy or crazy where you stare at it instead of the food. Everything was super clean and well done. Food was ridiculously good. I mean, no lie, the toast I had was the greatest piece of toast. Don't laugh. I've been to many, many places and the toast to me is very important. Butter was perfect - a light, crispy top and soft underneath - perfect. And the catfish was so good I wanted to go "noodling." My woman loved her omelette.
The service was even better. We had coffe mugs so big they were fit for me and our server "Kat" was the one who made the meal. I drink a lot of water and I mean she had a hawkeye on my glass at all times, LOL. She was nice and that was huge. I give it my super stamp. Thanks to everyone who recomended the place. I'll definitely be back. i love this place
I used to live within walking distance from Cadillac. the food here is consistently good. the coffee is fine. the bloody marys are fantastic.
if you're in the area, it's worth the wait. there are a bunch of fun shops to explore around there.
I'll start this off by simply saying this is somewhere my Mom and Stepdad introduced me to. I suppose that necessitates some context, so let's just say Mom and David eat at 4 restaurants only: Poor Richards, Doogers in Cannon Beach, that coffee shop/lunch place on the corner of Market and 9th by PSU, and the Cadillac Cafe. I Love my Mom and my Stepdad, but let's just say my expectations of the CC were exceedingly low based on the company this eatery keeps. Imagine my surprise when the joint turns out to have fabulous food.
I've eaten there twice now, eating the club sandwich the first time and one of their specialty burgers the second time. Both were very well done, and the tomato basil soup that came with the club was fantastic. It's probably a top 5 burger as well. The burger at VQ is better, but this is a close second.
The price is very reasonable for the quality of food and dining experience. The restaurant is laid out kinda funky, but it adds to the ambiance, and the service has been quite good. I feel like I'm late to the game with this review, since I drove by a few weekends ago on a rainy Saturday and witnessed people lined up outside waiting for a table. I can say with confidence that the food and experience of the CC is good enough to make people stand in the rain waiting to get in.
It's the only place I'll say to myself, I won't get the french toast, I won't get the french toast, because I already had the french toast the last time I was there, but I do. Oh I love that french toast. It's got hazelnuts on top and its sweet and so yummy. There is a pink Cadillac in the restaurant, you can get bloody mary's and mismosa's which I still need to try and great selection. I love it.
Breakfast here is like such a special trip for me. Loved this place on recent visit hung out with friends and had a fantastic breakfast. Service great, decor great, food great, eating breakfast with old friends, well priceless of course.
Recent visit had special which was blackberry pancakes forgot what they called it but was very scrumptious indeed. Gets pretty busy so be prepared.
If in Portland sometime check it out.
Last weekend was your typical early December weekend. It was Sunday morning and I woke up knowing that I only had two weeks of school left in the semester and that these would be filled with finals and projects. So one of my housemates and I decided to try a new spot for breakfast as a pre-study treat.
We chose the Cadillac Cafe, a place neither of us had ever been. Maybe it was the fact that I was starving. Maybe it was that doing anything but homework sounded appealing. Maybe, even, it was that I wanted to stuff myself with food in an effort to numb the pain of a quickly approaching semester's end.
Now I absolutely love breakfast. I usually don't have time for it in the morning, but I will eat breakfast anytime of day that a restaurant is willing to serve it to me! My biggest gripe about breakfast: having to choose between salty and sweet. But here, I found my dream breakfast. I ordered the pumpkin almond pancakes, delectable pancakes made with pumpkin and vanilla bean and topped with candied almonds. This was served with...ta dah: eggs scrambled with veggies and cheese. I had a cup of coffee that never went empty thanks to the friendly waitstaff and a wine glass of cranberry juice that made me feel much more luxurious than it should have.
The atmosphere was great, and if you get a window seat it's easy to block out the craziness going on around you. The one downfall (hence the missing star) was the horrible wait time. I doubt there is a time of day that you could go to Cadillac and not wait for a lengthy period of time.
It's a little pricier than most, but worth a treat every month or two. Delicious!
Cadillac Cafe, how I worship thee. (No flaccid bacon here!)
This is one of my top five favorite restaurants. Ever. The breakfasts are consistent, delicious, and beautiful. Potatoes perfectly crisped and non-greasy. Exquisitely crispy bacon. Excellent coffee and Bloody Marys. Perfect egg scrambles with fresh ingredients. Tons of sides, a la carte options and substitutions available.
Try the Pear Mimosa with your breakfast. Luscious.
The lunch menu: equally fantastic. Everything I have tried here has been the best of that item, that I've ever had. From the BLT's to the desserts.
Great atmosphere too. Perfect place to take anyone - a date, your parents, a group of friends. The bathrooms and kitchen are spotless which scores major points with me.
The cooks at the Cadillac Cafe know how to prepare and season food. It may be a little more pricey than other breakfast joints, but well worth it.
The Cadillac is the kinda breakfast place I take my mom to when she comes to town. Yeah, it's a little pricier than some breakfast joints, but it costs a little extra to wipe your hands on a real cloth napkin before rubbing your belly in satisfaction.
I've never had anything here I didn't enjoy, and the wait staff have all been lovely. Even when we took my boyfriends entire family, kids and all, on a Saturday morning.
One Caveat. Rain or shine, will be a line. I am allergic to lines, but this one is worth it.
Caddy only gets three stars because I've had two experiences here - one good, one bad.
Which first?
Bad: After waiting forever to be seated (beware on the weekends) our server forgot about us for a good 20 minutes. Even after we mentioned to someone at the bar that we were waiting, we had to wait some more. I ordered a special Mexican omelet that was good. However, I wanted tortillas to scoop up the food. Unfortunately two sad, stale and/or overcooked tortillas arrived at the table. They were crap and I got charged about $1.50 for the sandpaper.
Good: After waiting forever to be seated (again, damn those weekend waits) we were seated and our server came over immediately to see what we needed. Our food came within 15 minutes even though the place was packed. I had the day's special: peppermint mocha french toast drizzled with espresso sauce and peppermint whipped cream. It was heavenly.
Prices are a bit high for what you get, but the daily specials are always intriguing and creative. I'd give this place another shot.
Francesca J. told me about this place about a month ago and I finally decided to check it out today....thank you Francesca! Oh man, yum! The prices are a bit steep, but the food is really good. The atmosphere is surprising. I was expecting a small little cafe, but it's nothing like that.
They have a cute little area off to the side that looks a bit exotic and romantic. The whole style in this area is pretty contemporary and...well, just cool. Great place for a date :) The rest of the cafe (the bulk of the cafe) looks more like a nice, spacious restaurant than a quaint cafe. Oh, and don't forget about the pink Cadillac: very nice.
My recommendation: Garden Grilled Cheese. YUM! All kinds of veggies (mushrooms, olives, spinach, carrots, basil, etc.) and a three cheese blend grilled on a multi-grain bread. Very yummy. My friend had one of their milkshakes and it was super good too. I can't remember the name, but it was the one with coffee and chocolate in it. Mmmmm.
The service was great too. Friendly and attentive. She checked up on us constantly and we never had to track her down for any of our needs.
I'm tempted to give 3 stars due to my gastronomic distress after eating the pumpkin pancakes today, but I think that was a fluke. The pumpkin pancakes were buckwheat and tasted much like I imagine a flaxseed pillow tastes. Blech. The pumpkin was so subtle I didn't know it was there, and the pumpkin latte sauce had a texture like creamed baby food. Maple syrup just turned it into a sweeter, chunky, dry mess. Don't get the pumpkin pancakes unless you like odd texture and bland taste.
I got there earlier than my friend and checked in with the hostess, she couldn't seat me then but as soon as my friend arrived we were immediately seated. That was nice, she saved me a table. The waitress was pleasant and when my friend couldn't decide what to eat she steered him towards the mac and cheese. He finished the entire dish. Good advice. The coffee flowed freely, the service was attentive. My restaurant pet peeve did occur, when somebody other than our waitress brought our plates and asked who ordered what, but I'm hoping this was in the interest of expediency and I'm willing to forgive it. We sat at a 4 top for almost 2 hours during the busy lunch time and there was no nudging to get us out. Thus the almost 30% tip; you don't push me out, I make sure you get tipped well.
I've eaten here before and had a more traditional breakfast, the french toast, which was fantastic. Cadillac Cafe is moderately priced, moderately noisy, and the service is good. Oh heck, I'll give it four stars. The bacon was really that good.
This review is about Cadillac Café's Bloody Mary.
Hands-down my favorite Bloody Mary in town. It can be prepared mild for those with wimpy tongues, but the standard incarnation packs a punch.
Typically served with pickled asparagus, olives, plenty of fresh celery, and a lemon wedge, this is a great breakfast beverage. The drink isn't too thick, nor too thin, comes chock-a-block with black pepper, and nails the citrus level on the first try.
The drink's only weakness is the low-quality bar olives used for garnish. I'm a little picky about this, but they get everything else so right, what can I do?
Listen to me right now. If you pass up an opportunity to eat at Cadillac Cafe, you are doing yourself a major disservice. This is my all-time favorite breakfast joint in Portland, hands down! The cafe is very popular, so odds are you'll find a line when you show up. The wait times have never been so long as to be unacceptable to me though. The food is well worth the wait, regardless.
The decor of the cafe is great, with a real pink Cadillac located within a glass viewing room inside. The atmosphere is cool enough to go with friends, family, a date, or just solo. It's a restaurant though, so the outstanding food is what keeps me coming back.
I love omelets and I love avocados, so the Sonora omelet more than satisfies my love for both. Avocados, crunchy bacon, cheese, fresh tomatoes and black olives, all stuffed inside fluffy eggs to create this miracle of food. It could quite possibly qualify as my personal choice for last meal on Earth, because it's that heavenly. The home style potatoes that come with it are savory and a perfect complement to the omelet. If I'm not in the mood for an omelet, the French toast is amazing (as others have said) and is the clear-cut #2 breakfast option for me. The portions for both are large and guaranteed to fill you up. I always pair my breakfast here with one of their blended fruit smoothies -- I strongly recommend the blueberry. The prices are not bad and the service is typically wonderful, except during very busy times (but who can blame them then, right?)
This was a great place to take out of town guests. It's got the 3 f's going for it...a little Funky, a little Fun, and definitely Fantastic food. We went on a week day morning and only had to wait a few minutes. This was definitely what we needed after having an awful meal the night before and a bad experience at a hotel. After having breakfast at the Cadillac I finally convinced my friend that Portland is worth exploring.
Date: Nov 2006
Who: 6 adults, 1 child
Bill: ~$30 for 2 adults and 1 child
Pretty good breakfast/brunch/lunch but to really enjoy it you must have a sweet tooth.
Their french toast is what stands out and it's pretty darn sweet and tasty. I would order it as part of your meal and not the meal itself if you like a taste of sweet but not want to OD on it. I usually get one of their egg mix dishes which comes with a side of french toast. If you're a eat-all-the-frosting-off-the-cake-first type of guy then yeah, go for the whole thing. If you're more of the cream-cheese-frosting-is-yummy-but-i-still-don't-e at-all-the-frosting kind of guy like me then you're better off with my advice.
We've only been here on Sundays and we've always had to wait in line. There's pretty neat bakery just a couple doors down so we didn't mind.
The place is clean - it's definitely not a dive. Price is on the higher side but not unreasonable.
I expected more of a Diner or Cafe with this place, but instead felt like I was eating in a Hotel Lobby. The food was good, but in Portland I've had better for less. The wait wasn't bad for a Sunday and everyone was very nice, It just didn't meet the hype I'd heard about this place.
Hazelnut French toast, apple sausage, breakfast potatoes, eggs and a mimosa.
It just doesn't get any better than that
Its well worth the wait on weekends
i really like this place. i wish it wasn't always so crowded. good food, healthy portions, fair price. the staff is pretty attentive and chipper even when it gets really chaotic.
the hazelnut french toast is to die for BUT i reccommend getting just one slice on the side in addition to your meal. when i got it as the main course, it got to be too much and I ended up throwing most of it away.
I have dined here consistently over the last 15 years (including previous location). Easily 9 out of 10 times it is a wonderful experience (much better than most restaurants) and the food is unique and tasty. I realize the lines can get long on weekends, but that is a sign of a very good, solid restaurant.
Cadillac of French toast
For those of you out there, who tend to be a bit picky when it comes to menus, try out a unique breakfast at the Cadillac Caf. Not only do they serve up one of Portland's best breakfast, including liquor, they actually suggest modifications to any meal.
That aspect along with the best French toast I've had makes the wait worth it here. It's typical to wait for 30 minutes or more for a table on the weekends, but that's the reality of a popular place.
The menu and drinks are very inventive, yet has all your old favorites. The French toast is dipped in custard, to give you an idea of its originality. The prices tend to be a high compared to other breakfast faves, but I'm happy to pay extra for their specialties.
Tip: Great breakfast for a hangover. Not only will the food help, but you can order a Bloody Mary if you're really hurting.
You know, for a place with so many damn fantastic breakfast venues, Portland has a startling dearth of...waffles.
And I love me some waffles. I especially love great big fluffy waffles covered with whip cream and berries, the way I never make them at home (I mean, why would I buy whip cream?) but the way I always want them when I go out for breakfast.
Cadillac Cafe deserves props strictly for addressing Portland's Waffle Crisis. TAKE THAT, EGG SCRAMBLES! TAKE THAT TIMES INFINITY!
Great french toast - the classic kind that it is hard to find at some of my other favorite breakfast places - with seasonal fruit and toasted hazelnuts. You can buy a plate of three or a single slice (which is the way to go since they are pretty filling).
Don't forget the other lovely dishes and the lunch menu.
The Cadillac is awesome for breakfast. Why? The portions are monstrous! The food is unremarkable, BUT I mean that in the best way possible. There is nothing the matter with the Cadillac, and everything is decent, it's just not spectacular. You won't, or at least I won't be singing there praises when you leave for the day. Plus the prices are a bit steep for what they do.
