I loved this little store and would have given it a whopping 5 stars however, they did leave the security tag in my lovely green new clutch (when you live in Chicago, this is an inconvenience).
Great prices, great selection of fun and funky clothing. I agree with other comments, if this store were in Chicago, prices would have been tripled!!! Loved that downstairs they had their new merchandise and upstairs was their vintage clothing. Perfect and spent way too much money here. LOVE IT!!!!
I am often so amused by perspective change that comes with age.
Myself at 5 y/o: I promised that when I grow up I will buy each and every one of my children their own happy meal at McDonalds, as I looked on enviously at the white children who have their own. I had to share one happy meal between myself and three of my sisters. Yes - one order of fries and one coke (and asked for 3 empty cups), and one toy between four girls.
Now: It's my job to deprive children - it foster collaboration. Look how I turned out!
Myself as a preteen : I love Braveheart! It's my favorite movie!
Now: *head hanging in shame* I've never watched the movie.
Myself in College: Cactus flower is overpriced and the clothes smell funny.
Now: OMG! It's sooooo cheap (upstairs only)! And SOOOOOO many good finds!
When I was in college, I've never bought anything from Cactus thinking that it was over priced for a used item. However, after going to a handful of vintage store in NYC and seeing that the selection is scarce, yet the items are so pricey ($100+). I started to think that the $15-$40 pieces at Cactus flower weren't so shabby. It's nicely organized yet there is a good quantity to look from. It's a place to find all sorts of style from each era. Some of it doesn't seem to look so good, but when you take a second look, perhaps you see something beautiful out of something at first glance seemed ugly. That's part of the charm. I got two wonderful dresses for $14 and $25. One is a more period looking piece and the other is just a used dress.
VERY DECENT selection. I'd definitely hit this store up next time I come into Bloomington. Their accessories selection is great and the price range is extremely affordable. Chicago's versions of these stores would totally jack up their prices, so I found even the clothing prices very reasonable.
The entire second floor is dedicated to vintage. Quirky and fun stuff!
If I ever visit Bloomington again, this store will be my first stop.
My commentary only applies to the vintage/ upstairs portion, fyi. Cactus Flower has a wide variety of vintage clothes--from really delicate 1900's-1930's (literally behind a rope) to a rounder of 1940's-1950's dresses and plenty of 1960's to 1980's all upstairs. I found a fab old 80's prom dress for a theme party and have found some great wearable 40's/ 50's dresses as well. They have quite a few belts, purses, shoes, scarves, hats, undergarments and tops, skirts and cardigans. This is a great shop and I stop here every time I'm in Bloomington! The prices are reasonable and seems they have a wide variety of sizes in vintage as well. I saw quite a few extra large dresses in very good condition and of course, every vintage seller has the really small sizes. I wear a modern day 8 or 10 and I always find something that fits as well. If you like to wear vintage clothes, you're sure to find something here.
Last time I checked, used shirts from Old Navy don't qualify as "vintage clothing." Someone should inform the men's clothes buyer of this fact because I've seen several Old Navy shirt in Cactus Flower's mens section.
That said, their women's selection seems much hipper.
'Cactus Flower' is on my list of things-to-do every time i'm in Bloomington.
a veritable cave of wonders.
{leave your wallet in the car.}
Way out of my price range but some amazing clothes. Everytime I go in here I say 'this is so cute' about 23 times then look at the price tag with sadness. If I had money to blow it would definately be blown here. Upstairs there's a vintage store with a lot of stuff too.
There's a great variety of clothing here, with a good price range. I bought a great vintage bathing suit for a reasonable price, and also a pair of vintage sunglasses. Definitely should check it out if you're in the area, if not to buy something, at least to have fun trying on vintage clothes with friends!
Nice collection of vintage wears. Check it out often as it changes a lot.
love it. they often beat dumber stores (like urban outfitters) to hip clothing trends but rarely get credit. the sunglasses and accessories are beautiful and affordable, and the new clothing is dreamy. it's a lot like a small chicago boutique in the selection. the vintage upstairs is well edited, and represents the gaudy/fabulous, retro/horrid/amazing, and totally wearable everyday goods categories really well. the staff is always friendly, the music playing is always adorable... if they had any new men's clothing, that's the only place i'd shop.
love the cacti. awesome unique stuff- labels such as free people, tulle, rocketdog, junkfood, etc..... lots of handmade local accessories and an upstairs vintage section, which fyi you can bring in stuff to sell for consignment. don't be square, go to cacuts flower.
