I always get my yearly pass and it pays for itself the 2nd or 3rd time you use it......this place is awesome for the bayside trail hike, and over all the view is a greatvplace to visit weekly.

As you drive through Fort Roscraens Cemetary, you know you are somewhere very special, all those men and women gave their lives so you could be free.

Check out all the mini museums and check out the lighthouse and cannon emplacements.....awesome. One better' check out the old stone bathroom the westward side of the mountain slope......I must say it is a nice bathroom with an even nicer view, it's my favorite bathroom in the world. Visit this place if you have not been, awesome hike down the bayside trail, and an awesome relaxing, fresh, salty air view.

This is such a beautiful place! Great views of San Diego. We went on the trail/hike and it was a lot of fun. The weather was perfect! I highly recommend checking this place out! I hear that whales can be spotted from her in the winter months, but I have not experienced that yet.

Cool views of SD, interesting visitor center and cool lighthouse. If you got a slow afternoon day and wanna check out a nice biking, hiking, etc. spot, you can't beat the price at $5 per car. Good even to bring a lunch and just relax as well. There's plenty of parking near the lighthouse and limited spots near the tide pools, yes, I know tide pools. lots of fun and plenty of creepy lil crabs watching everything you do down there. Have fun don't slip and fall to your death. That would pretty much ruin everyone else''s day you brought and would be str8 out RUDE!!!! but seriously be careful, lots of cliffs and slippery trails.

This is a review that will specifically address a bike ride up to and back from the Cabrillo National Monument. Located on the southern tip of  Point Loma, the Cabrillo Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542.

This event marked the first time a European expedition had set foot on the West Coast of the United States. There is a heroic statue of Cabrillo over-looking San Diego Bay and with it a commanding view of San Diego's harbor and skyline, Coronado and North Island Naval Air Station. On a clear day, visions of Tijuana, Mexico and the offshore Coronado Islands exist into the distance.  In the wintertime-Cabrillo Monument is the place to check out all the passing migratory Gray Whales on their way to or from their Mexican calving grounds.

Which all just mean: THIS PLACE MAKES FOR ONE AWESOME BIKE RIDE! Now you can begin from anywhere in the Ocean Beach area, but be prepared to navigate up some pretty stiff hills in the Sunset Cliffs area. I would recommend that you drive up to the Peet's Coffee Shop and Fresh & Easy Grocery store parking lot on the corner of Catalina Blvd., and Talbot Street. There you can park and enjoy a beverage either before or after your ride. This is a great starting point for your ride.

As you take off, you will be riding in a very historic part of Point Loma-past the entrance to Point Loma Nazarene University  on your right. The "Wooded Area" where many beautiful homes of prominent local residents are will be on your left hand side.
Soon you will come to the entrance of the Park-the Navy Reservation Gate which opens at 9:00 a.m. daily.  The next 2.5 miles will take you along some meandering roadways with bay and city vistas on your left and ocean views on your right that will blow your mind for scenic wonder!

There is a right steep road that goes off about midway through your ride and dead ends at the Point Loma tide pools-a wonderful way to appreciate all the marine life that exists-by state protection-in the bosom of Sunset Cliffs. Continuing on, you will pass former and current military installations, coastal artillery batteries, and old army and navy buildings. Remember that during WW II, this area played a BIG ROLE in protecting San Diego from the Japanese.

Speaking of that, you will pass stately and serene Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery-where veterans are interned and buried. The row upon row of grave-markers gave me thought to offer up a prayer of gratitude to all these veterans for their bravery and selflessness on behalf of our country. What a truly lovely final resting place this was. Continuing on the road to the Monument, one can glimpse all kinds of wildlife and all manner of flora-and-fauna. It is a nature-lover's and bird-lover's paradise!

Eventually-you will dead end at the Cabrillo National Monument's entrance booth, where you can turn around and head back or you can pay a small fee to enter and look around. (There will be a free weekend in August 2009 to gain entrance.) I would recommend a brief check out because it is at this point that you can (by foot) access a Bayside Nature Trail. That will take you down a simple path with information on plants, trees, and animal species endemic to the area.

And if you are lucky- a huge Navy Aircraft carrier or internationally-flagged container ship might just be passing by when you are there. it is truly an impressive sight. I also enjoy watching the cruise ships exit or enter the harbor.  It is at this Land's End in Point Loma that you can take in the sweeping, majestic beauty found here in San Diego.
The views-whether sunny or foggy- never ceases to take my breath away. Grab your bike, helmet and Gatorade and make the (historical) trek!
