Must see!  Not some lame tourist trap.

You will definitely be inspired by Cabot's sense of adventure.  There are so many things to learn about this amazing man and to see what he built with his bare hands is remarkable!

From his 60's to his 80's he build this home with his donkey named Merry Christmas.  There are 165 rooms, 140 windows, 65 doors (17 of which lead outside).  That night I had wild dreams about it.
It is a sight to behold... weekend tours only.
Also at Cabot's house is the best little art gallery/gift shop I've ever seen.  So many local Native American artists, great one of a kind jewelry, pottery, gourds, artwork and sculpture.  Very affordable place to get gifts for people while supporting local artisans.

If you're staying in the area you'd be crazy not to make time to go there!

Super friendly, nice people in a totally unique atmosphere. We really just wanted directions to some hiking trails, and these really nice old guys were more than happy to oblige. Admittedly, we didn't pay for the tour and I don't have a great excuse (I was going to say I was pressed for time, but the museum is tiny). But, the man in the gift shop said we needed to see the little room that describes the history of desert hot springs and, wouldn't you know it, there is an actuall history of Desert Hot Springs!
The only thing knocking the star off is that the bathroom wasn't working when we went....

The last time I visited this museum was in the 80's when I was a kid, so now that my kids have become as adventurous as me I decided to drag them down to Cabots for a short trip down memory lane.

Small museum that is only open from like 10-3 on Weekends only. A guided tour departs every 30 mins and it cost about $6 per adult and I think $4 per kid over 5. They were very nice and only charged for me and let my kiddos go in for nothing!

If you don't pay for the tour then you only get to walk the grounds which has lots of pathways with odd and ends of desert and indian life. Water fountains, rock formations, wooden bridges and stairs. The tour itself takes you inside the adobe which is filled with nooks and cranys of odds and ends of Cabots very interesting life. They keep the tours small, less then 8 people, so you can ask lots of questions and have time to really check all of the photographs and ecentricities of the man made adobe.

My kids actually enjoyed themselves, probably because they got pick something out of the on site gift shop that was filled with local artisan work of all kinds. If you have about 90 mins to kill and you are in the Palm Springs area then this is worth taking a look at!
