There is no occasion worthy of going to CJ's. You just...go. But if you do you will likely have a good time. This could be because you will get seranaded on the porch by street folks, you'll find drugs in the bathroom and then deny that you did them, or you'll find a new pocket boyfriend from Thailand. I've done those things and more here.

I lived around the corner for a while and so this was the natural...you know...corner bar for me. And in the space of nine months I think I went twice. The cash only thing, while not unique, is a pain. It's a little cramped unless you catch it empty at which point...you're drinking in an empty bar.
I can't figure out what the appropriate mood or occasion would be to think "hey, I think I'll go to CJs." I just don't think it exists. Except maybe if you're standing directly outside and desperate for a drink. There are lots of small tvs but it's not a sports bar so much as a barrage of flashy lights that might cause a seizure. The prices are a bit higher than I'd expect for a place with anti-ambience, even in Hillcrest. The jukebox is fine but there's a long enough list of better ones. The crowd seems...not cohesive. Never know what sort of folks you'll find, which I suppose is a mixed blessing.
Just a full on, apathetic, meh.
I love this place. Why? The people are nice, they have an awesome song selection on their jukebox, the drinks aren't expensive, they have a cool ocean-themed stained glass thing at the bar, they play sports on their monitors, but they play all different kinds of sports including "extreme sports", and they have a cool little smoking section. Hands down my favorite dive bar in San Diego so far.

Good pour! Yeah it was cool when it was a dive. Yeah it was cool before Sushi Deli. Yeah is was cool before Jack in the Box. But this place is a lot better now after the remodel. I love taking people here that drive by this diamond in the rough and never knew it was here! Good jukebox!

I really like this place. It's tiny and you'd think it would be much more crowded, but it wasn't, the couple times I've been. Cheap, strong drinks (always a prerequisite for me) and a great jukebox. Only thing about the jukebox is that the contents are great, but it can be, um, confusing to use if you've had a couple. Hilarity will ensue!
Minus one star for the smoking patio being out front and having to walk through smoke to get through the door.
Oh, and it's really clean, too. In fact, I almost wouldn't call it a dive, it's almost a mini sports bar, what with the TV's. But the crowd (the little crowd) was dive-y, so...

3 drinks for $9. Need I say more?
Great dive bar in Hillcrest. I love coming here because its simple and the bartenders are very friendly. They have electronic darts too! A great way to kill some time while waiting to get into the Sushi Deli.

Its ok. Used to be better before the renovations and all of the ass clowns walking over from sushi deli. Used to be a classic dive with a busty bartender and cheap ass drinks and not so crowded.
It falls just in the middle of a bunch of stuff, its TVs are not quite good enough to make it a sports bar, the renovations are too nice to make it a dive bar, yet not nice enough to make it upscale.

CJ's is a great dive bar. I spent many hours here and there were a parade of seriously cool and funky waitresses that worked this joint. The jukebox had a good selection of tunes, and the alcohol was oh so cheap, which was definitely a huge plus seeing as I was a college student at the time.
Anyway, the bar can probably accomodate 30 guests before it starts getting crowded. Typically you'd find about a dozen patrons at any time during the night. There'd be a few regulars, as one would expect.
Let's just say this was a convenient bar. I've never lived, in fact, so conveniently close to a bar before or since. Let's just say I lived at 230 West Washington. C J's is at 222 West Washington. You get the idea? I even seem to recall celebrating a New Year's Eve in this place.... Pretty good times, actually. The next day, however, was a whole different story.

not quite hillcrest, yet a dingy pockmark on the backside of mission hills. forever cj's floated in the nebulous ether and was the perfect spot to go undetected. the regulars sat fixated on the healthy dose of cleavage behind the bar and the rest of the place was yours for the taking. nestled square in the bosom of the 24 hour jack-in-the-box, there was never a shortage of grimy drifters to keep the staff on their toes. you could always count on a certain modicum of privacy here to sit back and enjoy a stiff drink and a game on one of 12 or so tvs. very nice for those of us who refuse to succumb to the treachery of monopolistic cable television in your own home.
then sushi deli plopped itself three doors down and the place became overrun with a steady stream of sitzpinkler nancy-boys. they added a few more tvs(wtf??) and threw the vibe right out the window. alas, the drinks remain cheap and the aura cheaper. keep your expectations low and you will not be disappointed. oh, until you have to use the bathroom.
