One of a handful of must eat hot dogs anywhere in the country. Byron's is nationally and locally known and respected. this place will not let you down. Really great Chicago style, neighborhood, throw down dog joint. The kind of place you swing by a couple times a week when you pass. The kind of place with quality and taste you know and respect.

We went with the DOGZILLA. This thing is a beast. Fat, juicy dog. All the traditional Chicago condiments.

Pros: The taste. Mega flavor. Everything pops. Everything feels right.

Cons: The dog is big but light. Sorta lacks substance if that makes sense, the opposite of hearty. Also, the bun gave out on us pretty quick. Got very messy.

The price was good. The shoestring fries, not so much. But regardless of any con, the taste more than makes up for it. Get you some.

I was in a particular predicament: I needed to get some out of town guests a Chicago dog as close to Lake Shore Drive as possible so we could hop off and hop back on again in a tight schedule. It was POURING on the day we went. Byron's came through in every possible way - there's a parking lot, the staff was friendly, and they serve Vienna beef products in the traditional Chicago way. If you order it with everything, you will get some weird version of a salad on top of your dog. There's a substantial amount of fries that come with the combo special, which are also delicious.

The place has absolutely no frills. It's tiny. Really tiny, but it does have a parking lot - rare in that area. I can imagine being a nightmare after a Cubs game. Also, I thought the prices were a little bit higher than they needed to be. Nonetheless, it did a great job of helping me prove to my guests that in Chicago you can get a great dog on every corner.

Tonight is my night of reviewing the most raved about yet average places in Chicago, and this is another one of them.  I can't tell you how many people have raved to me about Byron's over the years, only to be disappointed upon eating there.

Byron's is yet another one of a myriad of places with a large menu that causes reversion to the mean in this city.  The menu is large, the food is average, however the price isn't so bad.  Nothing is really worth mentioning aside from the fact that they have cucumbers...I love cucumbers on a Chicago style hot dog.  Very few places offer this but it's such a refreshing ingredient to offer.

Byrons is perhaps though, one of the most disgusting hot dog stands on the north side in terms of facilities.  A lot of people don't judge this, but I always do.  This is always a reflection on my ratings.  Some people don't like that because they say the food is all that matters, but  I am a firm believer in having a place that is in tip-top fucking shape.  You can have a place that has character without being disgusting.  Period.

The help is also...different.  I once ordered a hot dog and he said "let me reach into my pants and get one for you."  That is disgusting.  I have no problem with a little gruff attitude that is in jest, but suggesting you're going to pull out your private parts and place it on a hot dog bun is absolutely disgusting, even if it's joking.  They had better watch out who they say that to.  Some of you, I know will laugh at this, but it really isn't funny.

Not much else to say.  Good location off the Sheridan & Irving Park CTA.  Parking in back.  Average, average, average.

I have nothing but love for the greasy little Hot Dog Haus known as Byron's.  I don't eat it very often, but when the craving for a burger (or a Chicago dog, or cheese fries, or a slice of pie) hits, Byron's is the dependable go-to spot that I turn to.

The food is quickly made to order and it's always satisfying.

I love Byron's.  Definitely a great place for greasy, yummy food every once in a while!  I have had a hot dog there which was delicious - your typical Chicago hot dog.  I love the burgers there!  I always ask for the double cheeseburger with no bun.  It is so good!  I love their fries!  Prices are good and they are fast!  I am a big fan!

Oh how I wanted to love you, Byron's. You're just a stone's throw away from my apartment, and I LOVE a good Chicago dog...

    These dogs? Not so great.

It's a huge disappointment because they have all the ingredients and know-how to make a perfect hot dog. The problem? SOGGY BUN.

Truth be told I get the works--mustard, relish, pickles, onion, hot peppers, celery salt, and tomato. I repeat, tomato. Tomatoes that appear as if they were cut at sunrise, and left to sit all day. Left to sit right under where the celery salt is shaken. I believe you're starting to catch my drift... The unintentionally salted tomatoes are essentially a tomato mush that will immediately, IMMEDIATELY seep down to your bun, making it completely powerless to withstand the remaining toppings. Then you're left with a fork & feeble, fruitless attempts to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again...

On the bright side, the fries are indeed fantastic. As others have said, ask for them well-done.

Last time I went in (I've been 3 times, again, due to proximity to my house), the two gentleman in front of me both ordered cheeseburgers. I'll be back Byron, and this time I'll hold the tomatoes--to ensure a dry bun.

I'd give zero stars if I could!!!! I know I had a White Sox hat on in the north side, but when I order a Chicago dog with everything that does NOT mean cucumber, lettuce, jalapeños and whatever other garbage you threw on there...got the worst Italian beef ever here as well....chunks of dry cold beef is what I got!!! Thick and cut the wrong way beef! a beef sandwich is supposed to be sliced thin! Went to scarf down the dog and that's when I noticed the mess...went back inside and told the rude guy I ordered a CHICAGO dog run thru the garden and dumba$s made me a fresh one the right way without saying anything...should have checked the beef too....this place is a joke, never again!

This isn't a negative two stars.

Byron's has tons of cheap fast-food on the menu, and it's definitely fast. It's an extremely dive-y place with outdoor seating only. They've got a bunch of signs about how their fries are allegedly some of the best in the country, which would be true only if every other restaurant in the country stopped making fries.

Eh, it's a "Hot Dog Haus." It's good at what it does.

First time visiting Bryon's after living in the area for nearly 4 years.  I'm actually really glad it was my first visit because this is a place that makes you feel guilty for eating there because it's so good, yet so unhealthy for you.

I ordered a jumbo dog and an order of fries.  The dog was perfect.  Just the right size bun, ingredients, and flavor.  The fries were, as others have mentioned, like McDonalds, but less crispy.

Total financial damage was nearly $7, which in my opinion is a bit much for a dog and fries.  You could make the serving sizes a bit smaller and charge a lot less.

I will return, but not very often.

The staff at this little Hot Dog stand actually take pride in their work.

My first impression upon entering this Byron's location at 5 minutes before close on a weeknight was glowing. Anyone who has worked in the food service industry knows that at 5 min till close all you want to do is clean up and go home. Well not these folks.

I wanted what would be my very first Jumbo Chicago Style Hot Dog and the sole employee looked at what he had, an already cooked wiener which he could have put on a bun, dressed it and got me out the door, but he did not. This fella asked me if I had a few minutes because he did not feel good about me not having a fresh product. Now mind you, he did not know that I'd never had the product. So from scratch he cooked a new hot dog for me, dressed it to my liking and very politely asked that I come back anytime no matter how close to close it was. THAT MY FRIENDS IS CUSTOMER SERVICE.

This was 6 years ago and not only am I a regular but again and again when I have a guest from out of town I insist they get their dog from Byron's. The staff is not only friendly which says a lot being the are usually very busy and so near Wrigley Field during baseball season but they are fun. And funny.

The spirit exuded by the employees of this place is what keeps me coming back.

    My highest rating.

This place is great for a quick burger with parking in the back.  The cheeseburger was cooked perfectly for me.  The cheese fries I inhaled were delicious but I will order them well done next time because I like them crispy.
The guy behind the counter was friendly and the staff seemed like they enjoyed their job. I think that has alot to do with serving great food.

It's like someone bought cheap bulk meats from GNC Foods and decided to start a food counter.  The food tastes cheap, is overpriced and is often undercooked.  Stay away from the temptation of the convenience Byron provides.  There are plenty of other restaurants out in this area that can satisfy a quick meal.

I know that Byron's is a hot-spot and widely loved by Chicagoans, but I just have to say that I was a little disappointed, especially after all the hype.

Ask anyone who knows me, I love a greasy spoon restaurant, so this should be right up my alley.  However, I prefer the food to be greasy, not the cooks and the building.  I was a little put-off during my moderate wait time by just how filthy the building was... and that was before I started inspecting the fingernails of the guy making my food.

I ate it, and I liked it just fine, but I certainly would never go out of my way to eat here again.  I didn't find anything special about the food to offset the drawbacks I found here.

Dear Byron, I know we just met....no...  Dear Byron, don't think I'm being  too forward. no....that doesn't sound right either.

I do not know where to even begin with my love letter to Byron.  So many things hit all my pressure points in this Chicago landmark hot dog stand, my love for hot dogs wrapped in paper, fresh ingredients, hot french fries fresh out of the fryer tossed in a brown paper bag with salt.  Friendly staff, fat ass little birds living happily outside.  It's so delicious and authentic. Can't wait to return.

I'm still amazed that the food at Byron's tastes exactly the same as it did when I was in High School. Byron's is still the same bare bones eatery that it was in the 80's. No seating, no Bathrooms and no plates. Byrons offers great fast food served in a plastic basket.
My favorite thing at Byron's is the Double Cheeseburger. It has a unique, smokey, charred taste that I love. Is it a Kuma's burger? No, but for $5.00, it's pretty damn good.
The bottom line is: Byron's will give you a great burger at a reasonable price. You will be in and out in no time, and your tummy will be glad you stopped in.

I LOVE BYRON's! We love the Double Cheeseburgers - I know, how can you go wrong with a Cheeseburger? But here's the thing, their relish and celery salt make it amazing. Oh and you have to get the cheese sauce with the french fries (yum).

I've ordered Byron's from GrubHub about 5-6 times and its good, but not as great as it is eating it fresh. I definitely recommend eating there. They really don't have the best seating, but it's a Hot Dog stand - it's part of the experience! :)

Jumbo Dog with fries is the way to go here. I don't get much else. I've had the gyros, but they are hit and miss. one time it was burnt badly. The Dogs are consistent, and being that this place is called Byron's Hot Dog Haus, play it safe and do what they do best.

Do not EVER call this place for delivery, unless you plan on driving to the  Michigan City Indiana shopping outlets and coming back with three bags full of clothes (half of which you'll never take the tags off) shortly after placing the call.  They take forever.

The place is right around the corner from me, and it was beyond unacceptable.  The last time I tried them (my final time for delivery) the driver told me without prompting him that he would call management and complain if he were me, because they have one guy working the entire city, and he's spread too thin.  So I caution you now, don't even think about it. If you do it despite my warning, you might end up putting your fist through your plasma. They take waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long.

Keep it simple.  Walk there, Jumbo dog only with fries, three star experience.  Anything bolder than that, you're own your own kids, I hope you have cushioning for the fall. One time they ran out of chilli for goodness sake.  Is that possible? They tried to replace it with the driest tamale/fajita I've ever had.  Uh, folks, next time just give me the money back.  Consider yourselves warned. Order exactly what I told you in person or don't bother.

It's tasty, toasted - It's racy, roasted - It's full of iron and phosphorous.
It's the favorite ration of all our nation.
And mustard is the sauce for us.

    Thanks, thanks for excellent franks.
    That are practically always digestible.

Chicago hot dogs done the way chicago hot dogs are supposed be done. Bag o' greasy fries. Yum. Polish sausages, chili cheese dogs and other artery clogging delicacies served simple and right. No frills here baby, and why should there be, this is a hot dog stand for godsakes!

The El overhead squealing as rounds the bend at Sheridan.

Pigeons mooching for any morsel of french fry or bun you would be crazy enough to give them.

Overflowing garbage bins and mexican men drinking beer in the alley.

    I love this city!!

I do believe this place is the reason I've gained 10 lbs. since moving to the area. They are a little on the expensive side, but you really do get a lot for the money. My favorite is the double cheeseburger combo. Two large patties, on a kaiser bun, with a brown paper bag full of fries. There is just enough room in the place for customers to stand, order, call out toppings, pay, and get out. If it's slow, the gang behind the sneeze guard will chat as they make the delicious food.

Oh, the fries...oh, how I love the fries...they are usually made to order, and I must say....better than Mickey D's.

As for the fixin's, when you say "everything", it consists of Mustard, onion, pickle, tomato, celery salt, peppers, and lettuce.

Like I said, this place might be a little more expensive that other "hot dog" joints, but sometimes, the extra money is worth it.

Yeah, it's a greasy hole near Wrigley.  It's good for some dogs or whatever before a game.

Here's the deal with this place........I've been there about a dozen times.  Typical crap food that you can find at any crap place that sells the same type of crap.  Not that there's anything wrong with crap, but crap is crap.  It serves its purpose I suppose.  Nothing too different than any other dog haus.

Well, after avoiding crap food for a spell for my health, I woke up late one summer day....the day after burying my mother.  So I just wanted some Happy Food or whatever, threw on a hat and bike the few blocks to Byron's.

I ordered a polish with fries to go, with a drink.  As I payed, one of the short hispanic employees began yelling something....on and on and on he went.  It was a Cubs Game day, and they all had on their shiny new cubs gear.  Whatever.

"Wissoss inna howwwwwwww!" screamed the short hispanic employee.  (I'm not being racist, just describing the unpleasant people there and hope they read this and recognize themselves)..........the white crackhead-looking 'cook' grinned at the guy.  Now I just want my food and want to get back home.  That's it.

"Wissoss inna howwwwwwww!  Wissoss inna hooooowwwwwww!" squealed the dude.  Now, as he yelled it again he looked at me.  And I looked at my reflection in the window and noticed my Sox cap.  Okay, 'White Sox in the House!' was what Pepe' was screaming!!!  I get it!!!  The short asian woman at the register just looked at him and laughed at him and me.  Funny.....hahaha.

Now, I can take a few jibes.  I get it.  Game day and here's a Sox fan in Wrigley.  Gee, what a concept:  Support both teams, which are in different freaking leagues for freak's sake!  This whole Sox/Cubs rivalry is childish and stupid.  But whatever.  I got my food, smiled and chuckled, and went outside to my bike.  As I got on my bike, I noticed the hispanic dude call out to another unpleasant-looking fellow in the back so they could laugh at me as I pulled out.

Now, I'm a bigger Cubs fan than a Sox fan.  I'm sure I am 10x the Cubs fan that this idiot is.  In fact, I could probably name over a hundred Cubs players on a moment's notice.  And my Cubs gear is old and worn out, not shiny and sparkling.  I just woke up and threw on any old hat, for shit's fucking sake.

So that's cool.  Funny Cubs stuff......but then I get home to eat.  The polish was almost frozen solid.....not kidding you.  It was warm for about 3 millimeters, then became frozen.  So there's that....and then the fries.  People, I have seen stuff come out of a dog's butt that looked better than these fries.  These were the old fries, the crap that sat in the garbage overnight.  Really, really really nasty.  Like something straight out of the trash.  Mushy, cold withered fries. There was $7 hard-earned bucks down the drain.  What a shitty shitty weekend.  Thanks, Byron's.

I am not looking for sympathy for my mom's death or sympathy of being ridiculed as a Sox fan.  But for the love of god, why would anyone at a restaurant allow this to happen?  I called back a few times, but could never get the owner..........i believe it was the asian woman.  WTF?

Really, I haven't been back because if I did I believe the hispanic guy would get hurt.  What a tool.

Again, I'm not saying that they always act like this, but the employees I encountered were rude, dirty scummy pieces of dogshit.  And i also saw the hispanic ass flirt with a woman who wasn't too happy when she left.  I'm glad I had my earphones on for that one.

    Never. Will. Go. Back.

I like their hot dogs, but I totally agree with the person who said they should be using pickle spears.
What I love here though, is the gyros. It's not that nasty flat processed strips that so many place try to pawn off as "real" gyros. It's big huge chunks of heaven. Not as good as say The Parthenon, but for a hot dog place, it's awesome.
Super fast delivery and usually accurate orders. It's a staple on my delivery list.

As hot dog stands go, this one is better than most. Definitely not the your average place. I really enjoyed my jumbo dog and fries. The dog itself had a good flavor and the veggies were nice & fresh. I thought the green peppers on it were over kill though. I'm really not a french fries person, but the ones here were pretty good.

A typical Chicago hot dog stand. Being a Chicagoland native, I mean that "typical" in the best way possible, aka great. I hail from the suburbs where fewer hot dog places stayed open, kicked out by burgeoning Panera breads, Chipotles, Noodles & Co. and the like. Nothing against those or even Portillo's, which I love, but there's something great about this made-to-order, greasy, tasty, delicious food that you can find at a local place like Byron's. It's tradition and it's good. Hot dog and bag of fries, and friendly, personable guys serving you. Easy parking and close to/almost under the El. Order, grab a seat on the picnic table outside, and you know you're in Chicago.

Byron's is pretty good. This place is a favorite stop for my dad, who has been coming to this place since he was my age. A hot dog place that has been in business for that long without being closed down has got to be good, right? I had some hot dogs and french fries here, and they were served up quick and tasted great.

Be warned, no indoor seating, but there are outside tables and umbrellas set up. The sign for the place says it all; park in the rear! If the lot is full, you can park carefully under the tracks.

What a hot dog stand in Chicago should be. Like all of the others said, not a destination spot that you'd go the extra few miles to go to, but instead of paying 4 bucks for a hot dog at Wrigley Field, pay 4 bucks for a Dogzilla at Byrons.

That's right, a Dogzilla. A half pound hot dog served up Chicago style or any way you like it. Unlike Wrigley dogs that always leave you hungry for more after having one, Byron's will fill up your stomach with that necessary grease needed to take down some beers and watch a ballgame.

I give it 4 stars b/c it's not too clean and doesn't really have any seating of any sort...maybe a couple benches outside during the summertime months. The fries weren't the greatest in my opinion either, but sufficient considering I ate them all but am pretty picky when it comes to fries.

    Dear Byron,

It had been so long but you hadn't changed a bit! What was it, 4 or 5 years since I last visited you? And you didn't even complain that I don't call. I appreciate that.

Your polish was just as tasty (and bigger!) than I remember. I love all my topping options, you remind me of a cooler version of Subway with the katsup, mustard, neon Chicago relish, tomatoes, cuke, pickle, onions, kraut, celery salt, and hot peppers! My fiancé couldn't help himself from ordering a second dog that he proceeded to work on throughout the rest of the day Homer-Simpson-style. Your fries were appropriately salty and greasy so we appreciated the extra layer of bag to absorb said grease. I'll always remember you for keeping the rarely found but often celebrated Green River on tap. Limey goodness! Awesome!

While I appreciate the effort of putting up a heated tent over the outside picnic tables, it was a bit too toasty in there. But, we were able to enjoy our comfort food bliss immediately so we were happy campers.

I don't know where it came from, but all of a sudden, once I moved to Chicago, my dad became obsessed with hot dogs.  At first I just thought it was a bit of a joke, some sort of quest for the "perfect Chicago dog" that required us to drive around the north side in circles on the day we first arrived craning our necks out the window and searching for the Superdawg mascots . . . the pilgrimage to the Vienna Beef factory store where we camped outside in the way too cold to eat lunch with all the workmen seemed cute, the dozens of Costco and Ikea hot dogs were mildly amusing, but I never saw it coming when he started requesting to have hot dogs flown back to NJ.

So if your flight to NY smells vaguely like tubed meat, I'm that girl . . . I have my sources in Midway, but O'Hare's too unpredictable, and it certainly presents a problem if I'm driving and meeting him in some neutral location, say, Indianapolis.  That's when I turn to Byron's.  I have to admit that I was initially intrigued by the whole GQ-best fries thing, or whatever that was, but that's really not the reason to go there.  The hot dogs are very good, and they do Chicago style with pickles _and_ cucumbers and even green peppers.  But the real reason that I stop there for hot dogs to go is for the service.

The first time I needed to get a few, I was joking around that I needed them wrapped up nice and tight so I could take them on a plane . . . and, in a stroke of genius, the guy put the toppings on the side!  So now I get to travel with naked hot dogs that don't spill, toppings in their own ziplock bags, and show up on the east coast with nary a soggy hot dog bun.  It's like the Byron's secret menu - you can now order your hot dog "Jersey-style."

And I'm just happy that I can make the hand-off at LaGuardia so that I can have my ride home . . .

I will sadly admit I live within walking distance of this place, and we still order delivery! The first time we went in, they gave us extra food because we were awesome, and it was our first time in.

The guys that cook have personality, and everything you want when going to a Chicago hot dog stand. I had my first Chicago dog here, and its one of those things you just need to try at least once.
They have good burgers as well.

This stuff is great for hangovers. Im not kidding. Not that I know anything about hangovers :)

My roommate's friend bugged us for WEEKS since our move to North Center - "You HAVE to go to Byron's," then "When are you going to Byron's?" and on and on "Have you eaten at Byron's yet?"
We finally did. It was extremely worth it. The chili dog was fantastic, as was the Polish (yeah, I'm still too new to Chicago to be obsessed with hot dogs covered in relish and all that, so I went with some slightly unconventional choices). And OH! The onion straws. There are no words for those greasy, delicious treats.
What wasn't too fun was the wait. A  lot of indecisive people were in front of us. Not cool! Byron's is a teeny tiny shack, and waiting for 35 minutes in there made us feel like the grease was seeping into our pores.
Thos onion straws though. Oh man.

Wow.  This place is great.  Good hot dogs, pizza puffs and fries made in front of you.

Sometimes they have some strange guys working the counter but the prices aren't bad so it is worth it.  Personally, I think Murphy's on Belmont has better quality food but their prices are outrageous.  Byron's also have Green River which I know is a treat!

If you love cheese fries, watch out.  I have been there on 3 different occasions where their cheese machine is either gone (not sure how that happened) or broken.  And they have also forgotten to put ordered and paid for items in the bag so try to check your order b4 you leave!

Overall, great greasy food at great prices.

Your classic Chicago hot dog joint. If I was scouting for a movie location for a place that screams Chicago hot dog , it's here. I used to live here while my wife was in here final months of pregnancy. I got many a call from home to pick up some dogs for her .I've stopped here for at least a hundred dogs , each one the perfect Chicago dog. Fries are pretty good ,I tried the burger , good enough but I go here for the dogs.
...Warning , I order my dogs with ketchup on them , among other toppings. Maybe my mom didn't hug me enough as a child , maybe I was dropped . I like them that way , deal with it! ...

Had a polish and a double cheeseburger with fries from Byron's.

Service was OK, but it was only two people working the Sunday night i was here. The employees don't seem to be in sync with each other though - after the first employee asked me what I wanted on my polish and went to the back, the second employee asked what I wanted and proceeded to dress another's customer's order with my things until somebody pointed out the mistake to her. Other than that, I have no complaints about the service.

Polish was OK, and the cheeseburger was OK, not excellent. The fries were not to my liking at all.
