I grew up in Santa Maria so I have wine in my blood. But Byron Winery just blows them all away. The wines are all that of reserve quality. You can't go wrong with any of them.

They are particularly generous and sweet. I actually dreamed of getting a job there someday, but silly me had to move to LA. My dream isn't dead and neither is my love for their wines. I pick some up or send mom (who still lives there) to get some. I used to pick them up on my big bike rides. Now I use the mommy delivery service; either way as long as I have at least a bottle on hand.

There are great wineries all around. But make your last stop Byron. They are above and beyond. Maybe it's the hilly place the are nestled into growing primo grapes. I'm thinking it's the master vintner who has a great taste and knowledge of how to blend perfect wines.

Just go and expect to get twice as many bottles as you'd thought. It's just too good to pass up.

Jonathan Nagy, the winemaker for Byron (http://www.byronwines....), is one of my best friends in the world.  I used to give him rides home from basketball practice and help him out in Calculus class.   Little did I know that he'd become a wine rock star at such a young age.

He pours his heart and soul into making wine for Byron.   He met his wife at the winery, and got married on the grounds.   It's a special place for him and he loves to share his wine with others.

Just don't mention the movie "Sideways" please.  Yes, it was filmed in this area, and yes Byron makes a great Pinot Noir, but enough already.
