Awesome wines, great staff, gorgeous tasting room...even their tasting glasses are high-end. Join their wine club!

A decent tasting room. No appointments necessary (as is the case across the board in Los Olivos). The customer service was attentive and amiable if not incredibly knowledgeable.
They poured their Pinots from admittedly day old bottles, but the wines were showing pretty darn well. showing just how much structure they had. The room's atmosphere is a little clinical but a decent tasting nonetheless. Tasting fee isn't comp'd as I recollect.
This is your average Los Olivos tasting room and really they are all about the same. But If you want to have a great wine experience, you need to get out of Los Olivos and into the vineyards or to the Lompoc Wine Ghetto, where the people who are really passionate might pour you a glass or two. These are the people that will care about their wine and make sure it shows it's best (not day old bottles). -

This was the last stop of our biking wine tour, and when we stepped through the doors at ~4:30, it seemed like every other group had decided to end their wine tour here. The setup is a little shop, with a counter staffed by 2 lovely girls. On the other side, a hoard of about 40 people. We felt like we were back in LA fighting for some elbow room at the counter to get the bartender's attention at some Hollywood club. But after about 10 minutes of being behind a few taller couples, one of the pourers magically appeared, 2 glasses in hand, and a big smile on her face. How she was not stressed out about how many people were in this tiny shop we'll never know. People here are just happy, I suppose.
The wines were fantastic. The tasting included 3 chardonnays and 3 merlots, all with different notes depending on how they were made. What a great way to tease out different notes of wines! We grabbed a bottle of chardonnay and left happy.
The best part? as doorstop, they used a case of wine. But not any wine, their most expensive merlot! At $40/bottle, it was a pretty expensive doorstop. -

Granted, this was the third winery in about an hour, so I was pretty tipsy by the time I tasted the wines. Having said that, I was still blown away! I really enjoyed all the wines. I bought a bottle of the stainless steel Chardonnay. Im not really a chard fan, but this one was super tasty and refreshing due to them storing in it steel instead of oak. I can't remember the girl pouring, but she was super fun and helpful. We had a great time here. The only downside is they don't comp the $10 tasting fee if you buy a bottle, only if you are a member. Boo.

I grew up in Santa Maria so I have wine in my blood. But Byron Winery just blows them all away. The wines are all that of reserve quality. You can't go wrong with any of them.
They are particularly generous and sweet. I actually dreamed of getting a job there someday, but silly me had to move to LA. My dream isn't dead and neither is my love for their wines. I pick some up or send mom (who still lives there) to get some. I used to pick them up on my big bike rides. Now I use the mommy delivery service; either way as long as I have at least a bottle on hand.
There are great wineries all around. But make your last stop Byron. They are above and beyond. Maybe it's the hilly place the are nestled into growing primo grapes. I'm thinking it's the master vintner who has a great taste and knowledge of how to blend perfect wines.
Just go and expect to get twice as many bottles as you'd thought. It's just too good to pass up. -

Previously, you had to make a special appointment to get a tasting of the wine made by Byron and, if your request was granted, the tasting would take place at the winery. Those days are now over because they recently opened a fairly large (and long) and charming tasting room in the heart of Los Olivos.
Byron makes some excellent wines, and a ton of different wines, too. The folks behind the counter were friendly and I would gladly return. No complaints whatsoever based on our visit. -

Jonathan Nagy, the winemaker for Byron (http://www.byronwines....), is one of my best friends in the world. I used to give him rides home from basketball practice and help him out in Calculus class. Little did I know that he'd become a wine rock star at such a young age.
He pours his heart and soul into making wine for Byron. He met his wife at the winery, and got married on the grounds. It's a special place for him and he loves to share his wine with others.
Just don't mention the movie "Sideways" please. Yes, it was filmed in this area, and yes Byron makes a great Pinot Noir, but enough already. -

A couple years ago I took the back roads out of Santa Maria and stumbled upon the Byron vineyard on Tepusquet Road, the first vineyard planted in the area in 1964. That's a great way to enter the Santa Ynez Valley- try it sometime! Tried the wine first time today- disappointed but did not know why until someone later told me the label has been sold to Kendall Jackson. They pour four whites and three reds for $10, finishing with the 2007 Byron Monument Pinot Noir which we were told scored a 94, but for who-knows-why. They have a classy marketable name, gorgeous logo, lovely tasting room but the wine did not hold up in comparison to the wines tasted at Los Olivos Wine Tasting Room, Tre Anelli, and Andrew Murray.

Probably our favorite of the five tasting rooms we visited on Saturday. The chardonnays were quite tasty, and we walked out with two bottles (they waive the tasting fee with a two-bottle purchase, which I appreciate). The reds weren't quite as good for our taste, but still nothing to sneeze at. The room itself was warm and lovely, and the girls doing the pouring were by far the friendliest of the day. I would visit again, and possibly even join the wine club.

Stopped in here not knowing what t expect. Heard about this labels Pinots, I think you can get there bottom line Santa Maria Valley Pinot in some retail establishments. I thought the Chards were nice, but boy was I pleasantly surprised by the Monument and Julia's Vineyard Pinots. The tasting room is fairly large (long) and warmly decorated. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. My friend left as a wine club member and I left with all 3 bottles of Pinot that I tasted to try again later with food and without a bunch of other wine on my palate. The one caveat is that their premium Pinot Noirs are a little pricey for everyday drinking wine. I recommend stopping in to see what the folks at Byron are doing in the wine community.

last weekend we stopped in the tasting room and had a great time. the wines were really good, i liked the stainless steel. i really enjoyed the wine descriptions- "like a cool, summer night driving with the top down" lol
the service was great! girls that were working [on oct 11] we super friendly and nice. i love tasting rooms where you dont feel like " oh hey, im just going stand here and drink you wine" but you feel like you are stopping to have a drink with a friend.
we left with couple bottles and will def remember the visit when we drink it. -

Attractive wine tasting room, very good service, and wonderful wines. Right next to Patrick's Side Street Cafe, downtown Los Olivos, which is worth a visit to as well. Many award winning wines. You can't go wrong here; worth a visit for sure.
