This store is great for true vintage pieces. We're talking straight up 30's style here. Tuxedos, flapper type dresses, as well as other items from other eras.
In the front is a considerable hat collection that features fedoras and newsboy caps. There's also a rack of sunglasses, not all of which are too novelty-like so that they couldn't be worn nowadays.
The staff is quite helpful if you need assistance but what truly shines about this place, are its unique vintage finds. There are tons of vintage lighters, bifocals (ya know, for when you go to the opera, and all), pocket watches, shoes, and gloves, and tons of unique vintage jewelry and charms in the storefront's glass cases. Most of these pieces are authentic and that's what makes them so interesting.
Also, note that there's a small bridal section in the back that features real vintage wedding dresses and tuxedos.
Also helpful is the labeling method they use, which is that all clothing pieces have tags that say what decade style this is from and what type of clothing piece it is. Bygones is great for those that love to dress up for novelty or for real.
Awesome store. Enough said.
By far the coolest store in Carytown. We were drawn in by the amazing window display (see photo), but ended up looking through every section. A lady with extremely good taste selects the clothing brought in by appointment (I heard her on the phone, and she was a little brusque with someone looking to sell). I loved the silk 50's dresses, and SG was gaga over the reproduction flapper dresses. Luckily she already has a sexy pumpkin costume, or she'd be plunking down her rent money for one. The shop is set up with great attention to detail - particularly the millinery and glove section. Another unusual item was a reproduction Rudy Vallee-esque faux raccoon coat for only $95. DC found a fabulous 20's style cloche hat, but was not insisting upon it since we'd already spent so much outfitting her for the scary East Coast winter. Softy Dad bought it for her anyway - the easier to fit his cash into the art nouveau money clip we found there!
I found a great pair of $8 sunglasses here and almost indulged in a pair of elbow length gloves for not much more.
There is quite a selection at CHEAP prices.
Looking for a cape from the early part of the 20th century? Check out Bygones. There are more selections for women than for men, but all items seem to be clean and well taken care of while in the store's hands. Clothing, jewelry, shoes, accessories, even a couple of bathing suits are available from the turn of the 20th century through the hideous 80s.
The staff here is super friendly and helpful. You are welcome to spend as long as you'd like, trying on clothes or just browsing. I love that everything is labeled by decade. The cases are full of unique jewelry you just won't find anywhere else, unless you are lucky enough to have a crazy old auntie that lived as a Hollywood starlet long ago. Great place to find dresses, hats, glasses and tights. They also have a wonderful Tux selection. You can tell everything here is handpicked with love.
Bygones is a great place to get Tuxedo pants and shirts for all you kids working in fine dining. Usually when you see "Vintage" it means ridiculously pricey thrift store clothes. Not true at Bygones. Depending on how you are shaped you can find really great stuff at reasonable prices. I really appreciate the fact that they know exactly where there clothes are coming from.
Bygones has served me well over the years; they not only feature vintage clothing, but new funky accessories as well--think stockings, hats, postcards, sunglasses, and vintage-themed scents. Like any vintage store, the stock is constantly changing--so sometimes you'll find something amazing from the '40s, or other times it's all kinda meh (my last visit wasn't as inspiring in the old-clothes department). It's nicely set up, with cute displays and period-appropriate music--and the clerks are extremely pleasant.
