this place is pretty cool.
the beer/wine/drinks menu is really extensive/impressive. i think they had every variety of samuel smiths in bottles.
the patio is great. jukebox as well.
had the vegan grilled cheese w/ avocado which was somewhat undercooked and underwhelming. pretty skimpy on the avocado.
What do I have in common with a vegan bar?
A love of alcohol, that's what. They pour a mean whiskey soda, which is just what you need when you've finished a night where nothing seems to go right.
The door guy put down his book and smiled, asking me for my ID. A good sign already. Nothing more fun than a door guy wishing he were anywhere else.
The bar itself is dark and spacious, but there was definitely a crowd even on a Monday night at 9.30 or so. Clearly, they know what they're doing. It wasn't overly hip. It wasn't overly divey. I felt no more out of place that I normally do in office attire and a hoodie. It was just that perfect blend of comfort and awesome.
For being vegan, you wouldn't know it. Friends ordered up the BBQ platter, which for all intents and purposes smelled about as awesome as BBQ can be. I saw some BBQ tofu, some baked beans, collared greens, and some bread if I'm not mistaken. Had I not been in the mood for whiskey and only whiskey, I'd have gladly snagged one of those BBQ tofu bites off the plate.
BYE AND BYE
To tell you the truth, I was less than stoked when this place moved into the neighborhood. I like my rent low, and my bars DIVEY. Even though I had been begging for years for a cool bar to crawl home from, I felt that this place was a little too sparkly with its Pearly Friday Night Crowds in their VersaceWear and its loungy, uber-hip arty atmosphere.
I was initially pissed.
But then, the douchenozzles that HAVE to go to only the newest places on the scene moved up the street to the Radio Room, this place became a rad neighborhood spot. It still has the loungy atmosphere and cool art, but I'm just seeing it through different eyes. Eyes that have beheld a little drink I like to call The North Williams. OMG, I would put up with sitting on razorblades having to listen to electro-folk-pop-hardcore-funk-fusion for 17 hours as long as I could have this small wonder by my side (or in my mouth?)
If you're picking up what I am laying down, I would get this drink immediately. Its spicy, bourbony, ginger-beer-brewed-in-small-batches-in-backwater- Georgia could inspire world peace.
Aside from this drink from the gods, the pluses are.......The bartenders are all really cool and speedy. The jukebox has Jay Reatard on it. The back porch encased in bamboo is magical. ALL of the foodstuffs are Vegan---therefore safe to eat, and most taste go-ood. Prices are reasonable. Plenty of seating. Close to home. I really couldn't ask for more. Grrreat Happy Hour deals.
Oh, except I hate the bathroom situation. minus a half star for that, but I round up.
THE most amazing meat ball sub for both vegetarian me and rare meat loving signficant other... the second time we went back we had to order one and another entree just to satisfy the craving for these amazing vegan meatballs. (which was the weeping tiger as i have seen gets rave reviews... i now see why.)
The sides of chili and brussel sprouts were both spot on; totally worth the 8 bucks, and the ginger/bourbon cocktail they have is extremely delish.
Go in for happy hour and get yourself some seriously delicious cocktails and food for reasonable prices.... and brings friends, everyone we know seems to love it.
back to my old stompin' grounds for the holidays and I wanted to check out some of the new spots. Bye and Bye caught my eye because:
1. apparently the weeping tiger sammich is deelish
2. it's a vegan bar - yup, of course only in Portland
3. it's in my old hood that has since been uber gentrified (sigh)
4. interesting happy hour concoctions abound
I tried the weeping tiger and enjoyed it immensely. i also enjoyed the drinks I got - most notably the ginormous mason jar of "Bye and Bye" that impressed my table mates. over all WHEEEEE!
The best meatball sub I have ever had - and I'm not even vegan....
The space is beautiful and comfortable, the service is friendly, the drinks are delicious and the food amazing (and cruelty free).
I love this bar.
Last night we decided to go to the Bye and Bye on the way to a New Years Eve party. We were both starving so instead to wait until employment happened before dropping 8 bucks on bar food, we allowed it to be a New Years treat.
And OH it was. We got a BBQ platter to share and it was SO good. The flavors of the black eyed peas, tofu and greens complimented each other so well. I didn't find the BBQ sauce to be spicy as other folks have posted , however, I like everything I eat to burn my mouth of so perhaps it was just untraceable to me. Well worth the 8 bucks!Just dont come in thinking it is average bar food. Its not.
The gf got the Bye and Bye drink that was mostly a mason jar of juice that didn't even effect her, and a half of a shot effects her. Perhaps that was just a fluke based on other posts.

5 stars because it is a nice, clean, pleasant, and dare I say "hip" vegan bar and that is amazing.

I freaking love this place! I was going here a bit too much in the past so had to venture out and explore other venues. Recently though I went two nights in the same week. The first night I had my staple vodka 7 and ordered their vegan grilled cheese which they are now using Daiya for. It is sooooo good. it is possible to switch the side of chips and salsa to something else (like their blackeyed peas or greens) i will totally do this next time.
the second night I had a hot toddy which was fabulous. They put spices in it so it's not your typical water, whiskey and lemon hot toddy. it fit perfectly with the weather and season. I ordered the BBQ tofu platter that evening which is easily one of my favorite dishes to get here.
The bartenders and staff are great. It's got a nice feel to it and a great outdoor space. and there is a jukebox to play all those classic songs you miss and love.
I had a great lunch here the other day. I offered to take my sister and cousin to lunch and they picked the Bye and Bye. We got there probably about an hour after they opened so there were only about 3 people at the bar. We ordered some beers and sandwiches and took a seat.
It didn't take too long for our food to come out, and what followed was an incredibly satisfying lunch experience. My sister and I decided to split the Weeping Tiger and meatball sandwiches. First, the meatball is totally awesome. As a meat eater I have to say that this was as good or better than any regular meatball sub I've had. The meatballs are served on a crusty bun with lots of sauce. It's kinda messy (when I first bit in an entire meatball fell out of the side) but worth it.
As good as the meatball was, the Weeping Tiger was definitely the highlight of the meal. You get a big piece of fried tofu in between freshly cut bread topped with avocado, tomato, lettuce and jalapenos. In addition to all of these tasty things, they smear hot sauce on the bread. Hot sauce! For some reason it has never occurred to me to put hot sauce on a sandwich, but it was damn good. We also ordered greens which were cooked perfectly, not too soggy to too chewy.
I was definitely in a vegan food coma for a bit but I'm not complaining. I can't wait to come back next time I'm in Portland!
Had four out of seven of the hot toddies they serve, and they were all 5-star quality drinks. My favorite one is the Portland Coffee, which seemed to be the strongest of all of the hot drinks. The hot food bowls here are also delicious. We ordered the "Eastern Bowl", which was supposed to be a rice and tofu bowl with peanut sauce. Despite how generic that sounds, it was really flavorful (tasted like nutritional yeast was sprinkled on it, yum). Came here on a Tuesday night, so it was chill and not crowded. The ambiance and jukebox were perfect, and it's a very spacious bar. Out group sat in the corner on the bench, so we had a lot of room. I would definitely come back here again, even tomorrow.
Grilled cheez sandwiches + Bye and Byes = me happy as a clam. It's all vegan, cute inside, and there are two bathrooms. What else can I even say?
I'll have to admit, I am still intoxicated from their signature drink, the "bye and bye," which was one of the better cocktails I've been served in a bar. It totally didn't hurt that it came in a quart wide mouth jar. Yikes!
Tonight I was inspired to finally make the pilgrimage from SE Hawthorne up to Alberta because everyone on Yelp made it totally sound worth it. Guess what!?! It totally was!!
My beau and I ended up switching what we wanted to get.. he originally wanted the Meatball Sub and I was going to get the Crying Tiger. By the time he had a few sips of coffee and at most three bites of the Crying Tiger he was having the spicy hiccups. I guess he thought the Bahn Mi was going to be as tame as the ones I make at home. So I switched sandwiches with him and finished my delicious brussels sprouts.
The Meatball Sub was totally something I could make at home, so I am not sure I'd get it again unless I was feeling lazy. But it was still good. Being a novice at eating burritos, I applied my other hand to pinch the bottom, and it wasn't that messy!
The Crying Tiger was so good! I'm going to be sure to add fresh jalapeños to my versions at home instead of the pickled ones.
Both sandwiches were totally delicious!! I'm excited to go back and try everything else! Especially the other sides.
Oh Bye and Bye, you have yet to disappoint me. I am madly in love with every part of you. I love you for your tasty drinks, I love you for your amazing food, I love you for your fantastic taste in music, I love you for your friendly bartenders, I love you for your candlelit ambiance, I love you for your awesome outdoor seating but most importantly, I love you for you and all you represent.
I love you!
So I came here whilst totally wasted, and don't remember much. The following points are what I can piece together...
-It was extremely dark. The patio was amazing, but oh so very dark.
-The meatball sub was amazing.
-It was very crowded on Friday night.
-I did not have to wait in line to get in the bathroom.
-The patio was amazing.
I will come back and get drunk on their booze, so I can do a reverse order of my state of consciousness.
So Portland boasts a long list of reasons to be jealous especially if you are vegan living on the west coast just far enough North to be in a different country and without teleportation abilities.
A vegan bar. Damn! I was so incredibly excited to check out Bye and Bye and I was not disappointed. Despite having stuffed myself full of smoked goodness from the Homegrown Smoker Cart, I treated myself to a second dinner when I spotted the BBQ bowl with Brussels sprouts (seriously...you just don't see Brussels sprouts on the menu at Canadian bars) and tofu smothered in a really delicious BBQ sauce. A friend had the grilled cheese which looked equally delectable. And vegan!
And popular! This place was pretty much packed. I found myself wondering what the percentage of vegans to non-vegans was because I think it would be really, really cool if Bye and Bye were popular with both.
I drank some beers but here's where I say 'Portland, baby, I love you but your local brews are over-hopped!' and I switched to some crazy ass delicious cocktail with beet juice. I was a happy hippie.
I'm a bit in love with various aspects of this place.
For one thing, there was a fairly long line at 6:30ish, obviously because it was happy hour. But literally 75% of the people on the line couldn't handle the short wait and dropped like flies. Hooray for impatience benefiting me!
The bartenders were surprisingly really nice. I know when I get a bit overwhelmed during rush hour where I work, I don't tend to smile much. (I was told "it's an east coast thing" by my boss. K thanks.) These guys remained calm and friendly, and I like that.
Outdoor seating with heaters rule. Even if the heaters were turning on and off and being weird. The point is, a party of four found a clean, empty table and all was well. Except we couldn't hear the jukebox that well, which brings me to...
The jukebox is filled with awesome. Fugazi, The Smiths, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbreaker...you get the point.
And now...one of the most epic moments of my life...A VEGAN MEATBALL SUB. Ever since going veg, refusing my Italian grandmother's meatballs has been ever-so-slightly killing me inside. This sub was a religious experience. After all the other crap I ate during last night's drunken adventures, I still awoke with meatballs on the brain. How was there no meat and/or cheese in that thing? HOW?! Epic.
OH, and I was going to reserve the 5th star for when I try this place again, but I totally left the two gin and tonics I ordered at the bar and walked away for 5 minutes...when I came back, they were still there, and, wait for it...NOT roofied!! Hooray!
Let's keep this simple.
I spent the better part of 2008 trying to make their Meatball Sandwich my boyfriend.
I want to steal all the artwork and take home all the bartenders.
Try the North Williams and enjoy it out back or in front with good friends.
I was pleased to be in NE and hungry since I had been waiting for an excuse to try the Bye and Bye. Now I consider sandwiches to be a worthy food group all on there own, so I was excited to try the much praised vegan options here.
It was a tough decision between the tiger club and the faux meatball sub (which I will be trying next time), but the club won out. It was not disappointing but not something I would run back for.
What did please me was the side dish. From among the many choices I elected to go with the Chili and I have to say it was the absolute best vegetarian chili I have every had. I hope they have it on the menu the next time I am around.
This place is the shit. I know there are people out there that don't understand my total crush on this place, but then again, there many that do. This place is good for groups (so long as you don't get there on a friday or saturday around 9pm), good for people watching, and great for food that's tasty and nutritious (!). Oh, and delicious drinks...yummy, tasty drinks...
There's no sign letting you know it's all vegan, but what's important is that vegans usually do know, so they can relax and order anything without having to ask the dreaded question "is this vegan?"
Eye candy is everywhere, including the cute staff (hetero males and lesbians, there's at least 2 girls now on staff!). Seating is awesome, with both patio areas nice and open. The jukebox isn't free, but it has some good stuff on it. The drink menu has signature cocktails at $7. Most are made with housemade flavored liquors and they have some local beers on tap. They have Hamm's on tap for those times when you want a beer but can't afford the $3-4 pints.
During Happy Hour entrees are $1 off, well drinks are $3 (this includes a tasty not-from-a-can Greyhound), and you can get some beers in a mason jar for $6.
I go for the BBQ Brussel Bowl most every time, whereas my other friends almost always go for the Eastern Bowl. Both are tasty goodness.
Minors are allowed before 7pm (i think that's the right time).
Meatball subs and lemon drops make me happy at a place within quick biking distance from home with a great breeze in the summertime. Yay Bye & Bye.
Only thing I'm curious about, now that you guys have the cool factor down pat and are packed to the gills most nights, are there any plans to get some cocktail waitstaff so we don't have to line up and jam ourselves in there hoping to get a drink?
The bye and bye is amazing!! Too bad I live so far away!
You can read the rest of my review later. Just GO THERE NOW!!
The concept of a vegan bar got me there fast and the deliciously seasoned tofu has me back there as often as I can. The bar has great outdoor seating and plays good music at a nice level. The food comes fast and is reasonably priced.
Highly recommended. So very highly.
I like the Bye and Bye.
I like open floor plan (though the place can fill up, even on a weeknight), I like the patio, I like the bartenders, I like the food (have someone try the meatball sub, then tell them it doesn't contain meat or cheese. They won't believe you) , and I like the beer and I like the booze (fantastic happy hour, inexpensive tallboy's and well).
What more is there to say? Oh! Expect large crowds on Fridays and Saturdays.
The bye and bye drink is served in a mason jar and is the perfect summer punch drink. The patio is super nice during the summer. Fun bar, good atmosphere. I have never tried the food but friends I have gone with have all said positive things about the food.
Don't come here on a weekend if you actually expect to order a beer and sit down. Maybe I was in a bad mood when I first arrived, as I had just popped my girlfriend's tire while trying to find a parking spot, and my hands were caked with grease. I waited approximately 15 minutes just to use the restroom to wash my hands. Then I waited another 15 minutes to order 3 beers (total? $15... 5 bucks a pint?? Seriously??). There were plenty of tables, but no chairs? I literally sat on the floor until some people left before I got a chair. By then, my $5 pint was more than half gone...
If you wanna be "in the scene" come here. If you like getting dressed all fancy and standing around like you're at your friends' basement house show, while drinking overpriced beverages, come here. If you just want to enjoy a few pints with friends, there are much better places to spend your money with. And guess what? You probably won't be sitting on the floor drinking $5 beers either.
Wow, a vegan bar. Of course, it's Portland right?
We got here around 9:30 on a Friday night starving. Unfortunately by the time we sat down it was closer to 10, which means we are limited to the late menu.
My vegan friends were skeptical about the food. Is it really vegan? The bar assured us it was.
The group ordered: Spaghetti and meatballs, Meatball Sub and a bowl of rice, black eye beans and greens. It was all great! Good flavors, the sauce was house made.
This place was pretty packed. Outdoor smoking/seating forced us to sit on the edge of other people's tables to enjoy the lovely cancer stick .Would love to come back for the regular menu!
I first visited here last November with friends who live in the neighborhood - the food was fantastic - not your typical bar food: vegan, healthy, local, delish! Excellent mixed drinks and selection of Belgian ales!
Tuesday, I returned and found that everything tastes even better than I remembered - that could be a factor of not having eaten since Eugene and sitting outdoors in the gorgeous 85 degree sunset weather.
I had the Weeping Tiger Sandwich with a side of brussels sprouts - since I can't tolerate the soy protein isolate in the vegannaise, the bartender suggested bbq sauce as an alternative - not a traditional banh mi to begin with and I love bbq sauce so - Sure! It was so delicious - I could not stop stuffing my face til I finished every crumb of that delightful sammy. They even gave me lots of extra jalapenos - which were spicy and crisp - and the combination with the sprouts, fried tofu, bbq sauce and veggies just hit the spot.
It's a nice spot - I like the feel and despite feeling like the oldest person there (aside from my two friends) - I felt right at home there and will drag all my other friends there when I return to Portland.
I sat at the bar for 15 minutes with my two friends while the two and occasionally 3 bartenders ignored us, 3 people chatting over a single glass of ice.
You acted surprised when we got up and left...you seemed astonished that we didn't tip for the single drink you managed to serve our friend that got there early by 15 minutes.
I've had good experiences here, and the food can be decent, but I can assure you that you won't have another chance to waste my time again any time soon.
Edited because the vegan/vegetarian fare can be good if their royalty deign to serve you...
I've been here a bunch of times and will keep coming back. Good selection of beers, good mixed drinks, excellent vegan food that will sate even dedicated carnivores. It's a great place to relax and unwind after work. I always get the sides plate with greens and black eyed peas, but the BBQ tofu is pretty stellar. You have to order everything at the bar but the food doesn't usually take too long.
Cons are that sometimes the bartenders can be a little weird and standoffish, I don't know if they are stuck up or just awkward. Whatever, I don't care that much but YMMV. Also if you are up on the hipster-hating anger thing then be forewarned because this place is packed to the gills.
This is quite possibly a new regular spot! My BFF J (Bloody Mary Snob) recently relocated her office to NE and this is now within walking distance! And what to you need after a brisk afternoon walk down Alberta? A snack and beverage, of course. Any time I get chat time with J is a good time, but even better when we get excited about new spots.
It was just barely warm enough to sit out on the (covered, heated) patio, and while it was packed inside (super loud), the outside seating was comfy and mellow. We each had a bloody which, I am pleased to report, came with not one but TWO pickled beans and the house-made mix was good. It was not very spicy and actually a touch on the sweet side, but we both gave it a thumbs up.
On to the 'meat' of the review... well, no. No meat. But this is one thing I actually like about the Bye and Bye. While it's vegan through and through, they don't flaunt this at all. It's not even pointed out on the menu, really and they make darn good snacks there. Cheap chips and salsa or edamame and a dollar off entrees for happy hour.
We had the BBQ/Brussels bowl and my extreme adoration for Brussels Sprouts has been renewed. I love them. B&B halves and roasts them, and combines with delicious BBQ tofu chunks on top of brown rice, sprinkled with nutritional yeast. Great, healthy meal.
Next up, because I am a sucker and will buy anything the bartender tells me to, got the special that day, Philly "Chz Steak" sandwich. The main selling point here is that when the BT told me they make their own seitan, I had to try it. This sandwich was crazy good. I'm dreaming about going back right now. The seitan itself was top-notch, well-seasoned throughout, and a great texture. Thin slices stuffed into a good baguette, topped with peppers, onions, and a cheezy sauce.
I ate half and said I was going to take the other half for lunch the next day, but really as soon as I got home, I ate it in bed and got cheezy sauce all over my bathrobe while I watched "Seinfeld". At least I am honest.
I like the option of making a meal out of sides, which you can do for $7 including black eyed peas, greens, chili, brussels, etc. The Weeping Tiger sandwich did make me weep a little, only because it was so spicy it burned my lips off. But I was adequately warned beforehand.
While personally, I can't stand a drop of SoCo, lots of the beautiful people at the Bye and Bye were drinking the signature drink featuring said devil juice, which cutely comes in a large Mason jar. I like that. Good drink menu in general, creative and fun names/combos. $1 off draughts for happy hour (which makes for a dollar Hamms), $6 Mason jars of brews (except a couple).
It reminds me of Vendetta a little bit, the general look and feel, but with a somewhat ironic Southern twist. Or should we call that a B&B SoCo Twist? Bye and Bye: I totally just coined your new drink. You're welcome. But don't let me have one.
Bartenders were awesome. Really friendly and cheerful.
The crowd got cooler and prettier as the night progressed and it was packed. I even mentioned to J, "Whoah. Everyone here is like... really cool. Glad I'm wearing my super dorky fleece, people probably think I'm being ironic". One slightly odd thing, though- there were a couple of babies there. Who is bringing babies to bars?! Ahhhh, maybe it's a SoCo Twist thing...
ILU bye and bye.
I love the cocktails. I love the lighting. I love the jukebox. I love the marinara sauce. I love the fact that there is a non-alcoholic drink called the Floorpunch.
The only downfall, which is my own fault and not the establishment's, is the possibility of non-optimal food and drink combinations that can happen. The combination of greyhounds and meatball subs? Oof
I absolutely hated this place initially. It reminded me a lot of a middle school cafeteria - you hold your beverage close to you and try to navigate the picnic tables (on the patio during the summer months) and hope you don't accidentally bump into the tables of the "cool kids." The layout is not conducive to drunken mingling (which is something I both love and excel at), but rather to further isolation of the dominant hipster population.
But clearly you wouldn't want to talk to anyone new, right?
I've since changed my mind. This is still not a bar in which to meet people, but it's a great place to go and get tanked without emptying your bank account. The drinks are excellent! I'm a big fan of the Victrola. I hate fruity drinks with a passion, but I'll make an exception for their house drink - the Bye and Bye. Large, atomic pink/red, and served up in a mason jar. There's nothing quite so satisfying as closing my mitt around a cool jar full of liquor. By the time I finish one (or two if my goal is total inebriation) I'm already a little rosy-eyed and telling my roommates how much I love them.
The food is pretty great for bar fare. I think I once tried the chili pie with some friends visiting from Seattle, but considering the state we were in.. I'm pretty sure anything would have tasted great. I highly recommend the meatball sub as well, but I wouldn't eat it around anyone you're bent on impressing. I think I managed to get 70% into my mouth (success!) and the rest on the table.
The bartenders are fairly nice folk and there are beards and plaid as far as the eye can see.
This place always has the nicest fixie's parked outside. Pretty cheap inside too.
I heart the vegan menu.
Everybody here is way cooler than thou. But that is a good thang.
When I really love something, I write it a haiku.
mason jars of love
sexy, dark, warm, and spicy
toddies on my mind
I wonder if the bartenders have caught on that I take all my dates here.
In the interest of saving space and not wasting internet-trees, here is the abridged version of my much longer review:
A mason jar of beer!!!
Seriously, what's with all the hipster-related whining going on in these reviews? Not to extoll the virtues of hipsters, but you know, hipsters and gentrification go hand in hand, particularly in a city like Portland, where the vast majority of the population is already hipper than thou... so if you're planning to frequent any bars in Alberta, just chill out, dudes.
Having said all that, while it can get rather loud on the weekends, I really enjoy the atmosphere of this bar, and the back patio is an especially nice treat (pretty well worth freezing your fanny off for). The openness of the inside (and availability of really massive tables) lends itself well to large groups, which isn't something I can say for many other bars.
I can't complain about the quality of the drinks either, they're always rather tasty, though I caution you to maybe stay away from the Bye and Bye signature cocktail, as I think it nearly put me into a tandem diabetic and alcohol induced coma (and I don't have diabetes). Also, the bartenders are generally sweethearts, which is always a fantastic plus.
I find it odd that I haven't written a review on The Bye and Bye yet considering I go here more than necessary. Being from the south, any place that serves up a drink in a mason jar wins my heart. The tasty, liquid concoctions here will leave you satisfied and eventually poorer (but not much) and drunker (probably very) than you were upon entering.
Plus, this place is vegan! Hallelujah! I can order up some BBQ tofu with all the fixins (collard greens, brown rice, etc.) and not harm any animals in the process. How's that for southern food?
Good ambience, good jukebox, good drinks, good food. No complaints.
My friend took me here on beautiful day.
So we sat outside and had some drinks.
The bar is not fancy but its comfortable enough to hang out.
People are having dogs with them and so relaxing plus peaceful.
I recently discovered that Alberta street is very nice and lot things to do.
I took my friends there and they liked it too.
One night I found they have Patio which is surrounded by bamboos and candled on the tables. Nice.
I felt that I was in another country.
Loved it.
This bar is gonna be my regular place to go after work :-)
The Bye and Bye is my kind of vegan joint...namely one that you wouldn't even notice was vegan! Their menu is interesting, relatively inexpensive, and consists of lots of dishes that an omnivore like myself would order even if meat were on the menu!
They have a decent though not spectacular selection of draught beer, but more than make up for any shortcomings in that department with a number of bottles, and a terrifically well-stocked bar with many custom cocktails. Prices are great, as $7 will get you a shot of Jameson's and a bottle of Harp's - that may now be my official drink combo of Fall 2008!
When my buddy said, "look they're serving that drink in a mason jar", I replied, "neat, but a number of breweries do that" thinking of Amnesia off the top of my head. Then he pointed out that it was basically a mason jar full of liquor! Holy Moly, they better take your keys when they serve that one!
Even though we arrived at prime-time on a Friday night, our party of 6 immediately scored a great table in the back patio. As packed as the place was, I imagine you wouldn't be so lucky if you showed up around 9:00 on a Friday!
The vegan fare definitely brings out some of the unwashed neo-hippie crowd, but I can hang...I have a beard! And the place itself doesn't seem to be targeting scruffy treehuggers, not with the kickass portrait of dearly departed daredevil motorcyclist Evel Kneval on the wall!
The Bye and Bye is a great place for groups, and being just across the street from the Alberta Street Public House it makes for a terrific 1-2 punch of great bars on lower NE Alberta.
Could there food be ANY more amazing?!?! Honestly, once it hits your lips... this sh*t tastes so good, and not just the beer.
Their "meatball" sub is so big and just hits the spot.
Their spicy tofu braised sandwiches are to die for.
I love their collared greens.
I honestly ate here about 3 times a week before moving down to San Diego
:(
Give them a shot, you definitely wont regret it.
Someone asked me the other day what the "big deal" was about the Bye and Bye. Ahem! Well, sir, I think it's pretty darn rare to find a bar that does so many things so right. Two outdoor seating areas (one shaded, one sunny), a lovely interior, delicious all-vegan menu, inventive cocktails, and a nice beer selection -- ALL IN ONE BAR. One bar! Oh -- what's that, though? You hate being able to order brussels sprouts at a bar? You don't want a giant $6 mason jar full of beer? Cucumber gin scares you? Hmm. Well then, go next door and order a grilled cheese sandwich out of a bus, or head down the street and get a $1 PBR from someone who eyes you with thinly-veiled contempt. I'll be sitting right here!
