I wouldn't hurry back. The food was okay, but not great. Some was conceptually interesting (the duck confit spring rolls) but didn't deliver.
The onion soup the a few of my co-diners got looked awesome, with about a cup of cheese.
I had the turmeric snapper, served with cold noodles and lettuce for wrapping. It tasted good, but didn't wow me.
I should've stayed home and had leftovers. The price is like Bouchon's, the calibre of food is like a Jack in the Box.
This is a very sour place. Everything was dry and sour. The appetizers were dry but still edible. The real failure was the onion soup that tasted like lime juice with some onions and cheese. I had one sip and physically cringed reflexively. The Ahi tuna was supposed to be medium rare, but was dry and about a tasty as plaster. The creme brulee came straight out of the freezer. I knew this cause the creme brulee plate had frost still on it!
The decor is stellar, the ambiance is nice, but don't expect your drink to come on time (the place was filled at half capacity). I would give this place half a star for ostentatiousness and another half for good location/ambiance. Zero for food. After being slapped for a hundred bucks for the most pompous sawdust in San Francisco, I left with a real sour taste in my mouth.
i went to have dinner with my family last Friday night and was instantly greeted by the hostess upon walking in the door. I was slightly early, so I went to the bar to grab a drink and wait for the rest of my party.
I lucked out, as it was still happy hour, which runs from 4 to 7pm and has amazing appetizer selection. I could have had a great meal for cheap, but that will have to wait for another day. The bartender was sweet and very knowledgeable; she made a mean Manhattan and had a great list of cocktails to offer.
Once my family arrived we got an amazing booth by the window with a floor to ceiling view of the bay. Our server was quite attentive and recommended a delicious bottle of Rutini Malbec ( i need to find this bottle elsewhere) to go with our entrees... it was a great recommendation. We also sampled many of the cocktails from the list... we couldn't stop passing them around. Actually, come to think of it, I don't think I got mine back after the first sip.
As for the food: Ahi tempura rolls, onion soup, hamachi, pork lettuce cups, and duck rolls were only the beginning and it was a great start. The entrees were just as memorable, from the cowboy steak and whole fried fish, to the succulent duck entree; it's no wonder we didn't have anything left to take home.
Dessert can be summed up in 7 words: Banana bread pudding with macapuno (Mitchell's) ice cream. I love a place that can support local ice cream shops and makes such an amazing dessert.
Butterfly: I'll be back for round 2 very soon :0)
Takeout Window Philosophy: Take something bad that people really, really like and cram as much of it into their face as possible.
Tis the season so let's look on the bright side: You can completely rid your life of gluttonous indulgences because flashbacks of your takeout experience will trigger gag reflexes for at least a year.
*Their "shaking beef salad" freed me from cow and pig for about a month.*
*Their chicken salad sandwich cured me from mayonnaise for, well, forever.*
I dined here Saturday night 7:45pm, the place wasn't that busy, maybe half full. The food was delicious, but portion size was small, but we shared our dishes. They didn't have the claypot I came for because they ran out of chicken. I recommend the garlic noodles and the rice crackers that came with the shortrib.
The service was attentive and friendly from everyone else except our server Kate, who seemed to of disappeared after she took our order. We had to try to flag her down when we needed something, but she never looked over so the other friendly staff helped us. When she finally realized we were done, she placed dessert menus in front of us without saying a word. 15 minutes later she came by and we asked for our check and she just grabbed our dessert menus.
I wouldn't of been pleased with our dining experience there because of Kate, but the chef came out twice to ask us how our meal was, this definately made up for her. Yes, she was helping others as well, but again the place wasn't full at all so this doesn't excuse her.
-1 stars for Kate
5 stars for food and great service from the other staff
I came here for there Thanksgiving special.
It was nice that we were served each course with some time in between, and the service was pretty good. I have to say that the bar tender made me a delicious mojito!
The food was pretty good, although I'm not a fan of too much meat, and there was a lot of meat in everything. I definitely could not finish my entire meal! By the time dessert came around, I could barely eat that!
The decor is pretty nice, and the food is pretty good, but it's definitely a bit over priced.
Thankfully this place has a view and is near a tourist spot to draw in business because their food alone won't do it. We ordered: calamari appetizer, Kobe beef burger, French dip, and kid's chicken skewers. The only thing we finished was the calamari and my Stella beer that was served in a low-ball vs. a pilsner (yikes).
Note- adding soy sauce to the dishes doesn't make it Asian.
A good place to grab a drink, but I'll pass on eating here again any time soon.
I chose this as my destination to party on Halloween, because it was free before 10pm for ladies with a costume. We got there around 9:15, right after the doors opened and stood in line patiently.
Eventually it became obvious that there was some issue at the door as some of the ladies in front of us started getting pissed off and arguing with the doormen. Turns out that the guys at the door tried saying that the free before 10pm was a typo and that you could only get in if you had a ticket. Well, as you can imagine that did not go over well. Finally they called for all girls in costumes to stand in a different line and we got in free, as advertised. Duh!
The club was alright, it's smaller than I expected and I think they let in too many people because it turned into this crazy mass of people and you couldn't even move. That's just asking for fights, which I almost got in because some girl shoved me in the back, and drinks getting spilled on people. Booo!!!
Next year I think I'll skip Halloween partying or pay the ridiculous ticket price for a well organized party.
I came to Butterfly for their Halloween party also. Not only did I have to pay for admission (despite their flier saying admission was free for females in costume), but I was denied re-entry, which was curious to me because my wrist was stamped when I walked in for the first time(why stamp my wrist if reentry wasn't allowed?). Also, I saw them letting other people back in so I don't know what to say...
All I know is, I will be spending next year's halloween at another club.
I came here for Halloween night.
Disregarding an incident that transpired that night, I would have given this club 3 stars -- music was good, most people seemed like they were having a good time, waiting in line didn't take too long, etc. A decent club.
But apparently Butterfly's short, skinny blonde bartender can't keep her hands to herself. In a misunderstanding with my friend, the bartender ended up slapping my friend and pulling her hair, as well as knocking the drink into nearby dancers and my eyes. Pretty stupid snap reaction to a simple misunderstanding.
The bartender should practice some restraint after she's fired.
Beautiful ambiance and mellow feel.
Hospitable and kind staff. Made sure we were ok and taken care of. Chef, manager, host, and servers all came up to us and made small, nice conversation. Cool people.
Food was ok.
APPS: Sonoma Libery Duck Confit Spring Rolls were decent, just like your average deep fried spring rolls, nothing really special. Kalua Pig with Butter Lettuce Cups were simple but yummy.
COCKTAILS: Lycheetini was way too strong. Friend had to ask for more syrup to make it sweeter.
ENTREES: I had the Five Spice Braised Angus English Short Rib. Meat was INCREDIBLY tender but the sauce was too salty and didn't enjoy the rice cakes with them. I would have preferred steamed rice. 4 people from my party wanted the Free Range Rocky Jr. Chicken Clay Pot but they 'just ran out' when we began to order so that totally changed the mood. Supposedly, they ran out of chicken but it was only 7:00 pm on a Saturday and the restaurant wasn't EVEN close to a full house. Friends who resorted to the Loco Moco Burger thought it was dry and needed gravy, and would've preferred going to Ono's Hawaiian BBQ instead. Friends who ordered the Sesame Crusted Ahi Bros. Yellowfin Tuna thought it was alright, as well.
DESSERT: Best part! I had the Chocolate Chip & Almond Cookies which came with a creme brulee and chilled Vietnamese coffee. The coffee came with a chocolate straw, the creme brulee was delicous, and the cookies were perfect. Friend got the Banana Lumpia Rolls (aka Turon in Tagalog), they seemed a little soggy since they were covered in ice cream. Other friends got Banana Bread Pudding and they seemed to enjoy it a lot. Another friend got the Warm Chocolate Torte, pretty simple, just like any other.
Overall, good experience. Kind of disappointing that half of my party couldn't get the clay pot that they wanted. Food was decent but excellent service, for sure! MIGHT come back here, MIGHT NOT.
The best thing they offered was the free sesame edamame beans they gave us while waiting for our other friends.
At approximately 7:30 we ordered our entrees and the most appetizing entree was the chicken clay pot which they were out of. There were about 5-6 empty tables, but no chicken. It was a saturday...
HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU RUN OUT OF CHICKEN @ 7:30PM on a SATURDAY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I don't understand.
So i ordered the "loco moco style" burger. It was grilled spam, a patty, ONE onion ring, 2 eggs and a bunch of mushrooms. What is missing? GRAVY!!!!! The loco moco style burger just became a regular burger with spam and egg in it. Very disappointing.
The full bar they 'claimed' they had. Didn't have midori liquor
Tomorrow i'm going to ONO'S HAWAIIAN BARBEQUE for a REAL loco moco.
Describe the place in one word? GTFO(GET THE F OUT!)
The food was bland and unappealing. I had the duck confit which turned out to be extremely dry and close to inedible. The surf and turn and salmon entrees weren't much better, edible at least but nothing to rave about. The highlight of the evening was the oyster appetizer, something they didn't have to cook.
The service was horrible, our waitress was nowhere to be found when we needed her. It took her over 20 minutes to come take our orders after we got our drinks and almost as long for her to come get the check at the end of the meal. She was juggling two other large parties while the wait staff in the other sections of the restaurant were standing idle. Note that this was a late dinner on a Friday night, so the restaurant was not even that busy.
Sub par food, terrible service for a high price pretty much sums up the Butterfly experience. The same food can be had elsewhere for a fraction of the cost. I suggest that anyone in that area looking for a place to dine skip Butterfly and instead head across the street to Houston's for a much more enjoyable meal.
This is going to sound harsh, but its because I really enjoyed this restaurant and I think they have so much potential to be great if they fixed a few small areas.
We had their 4-course set menu. First dish: Spring rolls with salmon, strawberry and nouc mam?!? Its an odd combination but it was delicious and refreshing. Then the flavored edamame, calamari, and another fried roll. All were very very good.
I ordered the snapper for entree. It took over 45 mins after the last appetizer was served. By this time I was no longer hungry. Their appetizer portions are big! The entree came out, and it looked very good. I understand they want to be generous with their food, but no way could someone finish all this. It makes it almost less appetizing when you serve in such large portions, especially when your restaurants concept is fine dining. Then came desert, creme brulee very nicely done, not too sweet and perfect sugar crust on top.
Service is top notch. They are so attentive and willing to make your experience memorable. The waitress overheard our conversation and catered to us immediately.
The chef needs to portion and pace the guests stomachs. After sending 4 appetizers you get pretty full. Then hitting you with french onion soup, your entree, AND dessert will burst you. Also has to work on his timing. However, his flavor combinations are great. So $40 for a brunch? Its alright, better save it for dinner when you are really hungry.
Alright so this is a review of the place as a nightclub and first 1 star rating here on yelp so a business seriously needs to screw up for me to get such a low rating. Came here for their Halloween thing since friend had some friends coming. First off paid $20 for a ticket which wasn't bad for a Halloween party and girls would be free before 10 with a costume. As always the line moved slowly like any nightclub and the girls had to pay $40 each to get in. What a rip off!! Got inside with my friends and I could count exactly 2 Halloween decorations in the place. For $40 you would think they could do a better job but I guess not. Definitely not coming back to this place for any of their night time affairs and there's no in-n-outs so what's the point of the stamp??
The only downfall of this place is its misleading outside menu. It is about 3 times the size of the actual menu once you sit down to order. They need to replace it ASAP. the location is great if you are looking for a semi dressy restaurant in the Pier area. Rib appetizer was great as was the friendly service. We had an "off menu" Kobe burger which happens to be listed on the outside menu.
The restaurant itself is nicely designed and the restroom was clean and nicely decorated.
Did I eat at the same place as everyone below me?!?!?
The plus. Service was great, the free edamame was yummy and the presentation was good.
The negative. The food was horrible. I tried the salmon carpaccio, fried calamari, garlic noodles and Hoisin ribs. All simple dishes to make. But none of them had flavor! I mean I looked through the plate of garlic noodles and there was not a bit of garlic in them!
So will never recommend this place to anyone nor ever step foot in the establishment again....
Took my lovely clinic manager to toast her birthday. As i'm the luckiest boss around (the quality of her work has spoiled me for a lifetime..), transplanting her from peninsula to sf is a favorite hobby. Gives an unhurried moment to hear of her world and nosh together on beautiful food.
Butterfly did well as a setting. Sat in a cosy demi-booth which looked out on the bay: sailboats in full sway on clear day. Service prompt, and menu offered fresh idea. Execution fine, not stellar-- i had Sashimi Salad which might've been great, but dressing was too heavy to let fat of fish shine. A good idea nonetheless (an attempted re-creation at home not out of the question..) She had a chicken club sandwich, recommended for sheer volume, and report was a thumbs up.
Overall, a nice to take it sf, though with quality eateries dusting our fine city, i'm unlikely to rush back. Still, enjoyed my favorite of employees and no regrets on the visit.
Good ambiance. View of the bay is great !!! Customer Service is excellent. Weekend brunch is yummy. Eggs with Crab Cakes is suggested. I wasn't too sold on my Chicken Salad Sandwich though =(.
Great atmosphere and view of the bay. Had the vegetarian Bento box and it was yummy. Friend had the Loco Moco Burger and it was to die for. You also have to try the mushroom soup. It is made like you're having a latte, however it is a soup. YUM.
Everything about this restaurant was an "alright'' experience except for two things the staffs and the meal.
I sensed a bit of discrimination, Bias mind frame staffs. I truely believed the service I received was due to my age.
They probably assumed as young as I am I probably couldn't afford dinning there and or they most likely assumed I won't tip... lol
For my order I had string beans, tempura tofu as my entree.
Appetizers I had dry plain noodles, atleast it was coloful! And mushroom soup ummm had an odd taste. Overal Didn't quite "hit the spot' oh but! The ginger lemon drink! Was beyond delectable! I digged it yo!
Entire experience Quite halarious I must say.... lol
to the staffs ' what good would it do for you soul when you pass unpleasant judgements on to others? Are you any better than the rest? '
the first time i ate here was a few years ago for DAT, and that was delicious. this time, however, my experience was not so great. food-wise I thought my dish was pretty good - i got the wagyu burger w/spam (actually very delicious!). the spam added a nice saltiness, but the burger was WAY too big - i had to cut it up to eat it. what's the point of getting a burger if i can't stuff it all in my mouth?
my bf got the vegetarian bento box and while he is a picky vegetarian eater, even i have to admit the box was not that great, especially the garlic noodles. i think they forgot the salt...and the garlic.
overall service was spotty; at first they were really attentive and appetizers came fast (btw, the mushroom soup cappuccino is so cute! and the pear and endive salad is delish). but then we waited a looong time for our entrees, and an even longer time for them to clear our plates and offer us dessert.
i might go back...for lunch
Overall pretty good experience. Very friendly and attentive service. Excellent location and fantastic decor. Dishes were hit or miss. Hits were the oysters, eggrolls, ahi tempura rolls, and shrimp dumplings. But the Wagyu Cheeseburger is inedible and doesn't belong on the menu. Plan to go back to try other items. Recommend.
I went to Butterfly with a large group for a friend's birthday. It just so happened to fall on a Mother's Day so they had a 4-course special going on or something. I HATE seafood. I was really disappointed most of the dishes on the menu were seafoody, but hey, it's right next to the wharf so I don't blame 'em.
Each time a dish came to us I was impressed at the presentation, the fact that I had the balls to even taste the stuff, even more so the fact that I fell completely in love with seafood since that day. Okay, so maybe just that day. But really. The more outspoken ones in the group, including myself, were raving about the food. It was delicious.
Our waiter was suuuuper nice and helpful, I actually felt kind of bad because we were kind of all over the place. The chef took the time to ask us how everything was and told us a bit about the owner and the inspiration of the restaurant. Super duper plus. Will visit many more times, for sure.
This review is only for the HH.
I came to Butterfly on Friday after work with my friend. The walk to get here from the FiDi was definitely a trek, so by the time we finally got to Butterfly, there was only 30 minutes left of HH (HH ends at 7 pm on Friday, but I think it reopens later on). The cocktails were really delicious ($5, and I definitely left tipsy after only 2), as were the calamari ($5) & oyster shooters ($1), and the decor. I thought the view of the water was okay, but nothing to write home about (maybe it's better at night?).
In terms of the crowd, Butterfly is very mellow for a Friday HH spot (it's probably the location, since the HH deals ARE good), but the crowds definitely started rolling in around dinner time. Given the small amount of people there, I was a little surprised that the bartender still got my friend's and my drink mixed up. There was a mixture of some old random tourist couples, some families and only one other group of younger folk.
Despite the mellow crowd, I think that the HH at Butterfly is a great place to go with one or two other friends. Sometimes it's nice to venture a little further to the places not that many people go to ;)
I went to Butterfly for a lunch meeting because my boss loves the fries here and we had some from the takeout section once. We had been waiting to eat here again and this past week, it happened.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to get because the menu is a bit overwhelming and I didn't have time to look at it. I saw a dish on a neighboring table that looked tasty, so I ordered the same...the lemongrass and coconut curry chicken. This was delicious. The flavor was great and they served it with a sourdough roll which complimented it perfectly. The chicken was very moist too.
I was very impressed with Butterfly. I had only been here for parties before and once for takeout. Now, I'm hoping to stop by and grab lunch more often.
Can i just say this restaurant was so beautiful inside! That is what first caught my eye! You walk into these high fushion glass doors to be automatically created and seated to your reservation! First plus! As your taking your small tour through ( it isn't too big, but the art work of mirror-jeweled hanging and palm tree metals of lights hanging from the ceiling above your taken back and at amazement of the beauty. I met for a birthday lunch for myself with my boss/ friend who is so awesome to have brought me there. Our seat was in the back so it was over-looking the bay! (fyi, news said it was suppose to rain, we had the bluest skies i have ever seen frisco have and heat!) Yeah for me! So needless to say i was in heaven. Even with a party seating next to me and my colleque it was still and relaxing atmosphere since you practically were lounging on a couch with pillows while you dined. I was able to have a very pleasant chit chat while i sipped yummy iced tea and devoured my humungus chicken salad club sandwich with fries that i never thought i would finish. Needless to say i had to get a box to go, but well worth later on to finish! My boss went with a salad which seemed to vanish into her belly as well. The menu was short and simple, the decor glamourus and my meal was absolutely wonderful! Def would like to come again and try other appetizers and drinks!
Sometimes unusual circumstances lead you to a great find. From the outside this place looked modern and kinda like a club or something so we weren't so sure of the quality of their "Asian fusion" cuisine after looking through the menu posted outside, but what the heck... I needed to pee!
We were seated at a comfortable booth next to the glass windows looking over the pier. (.... hmmm.. not bad)
Then a small dish of Edamame smothered with Sesame oil and back & white sesame seeds was brought to our table. (Ohhh yum! Maybe this place is good)
Then I saw a huge, thick cut steak on a sizzling plate passing by... (Darn, that looked good!)
By the time we saw the stake, we've already ordered fire fried calamari, garlic seared clam & mussels and classic Caesar salad. I have never had fried calamari like this one before. Lightly fried and crispy, and not oily. Combination of the ponzu, thinly sliced cucumber, cilantro and the fried calamari were just perfect.
Soup of the mussels and clam dish was coconut based with hint of curry and it went perfectly with the seafood. Don't forget to soak your bread into the soup! It was very tasty dish.
Service was good too. The guy kept refilling my soda as I was very thirsty after watching a Giants' game in the hot sun. I was extra crispy just like their fire fried calamari :) After all, this place turned out to be a great place to sit down, looking over the pier, have some cocktails over yummy Asian fusion dishes.
Went here one random Fri afternoon for Happy Hour with friends.
We were looking for fresh oysters, so we ended up going to this location who had $1 OYSTER SHOTS--best thing ever. Among 3 of us, I think over time we ordered about 30. Perfect mix between the bloody mary mix, garlic, and fresh oyster in a shot glass. I asked for lemon slices to add a small squirt of lemon juice which absolutely solidified the taste.
Butterfly's drinks were also great, wonderful array of wines and beers. In addition they had some fun inventive drinks. HAppy Hours specials were definitely awesome.
We also got classic Calamari, which was good except company I was with was not a fan of the mayo, and the server/restaurant was more than fine with giving us a new batch.
Classy small intimate restaurant, and we actually sat outside on this random sliver of deck that runs along the side of the pier.
Didn't really have a full meal so I can't comment on that; however, I thoroughly enjoyed the apps (specifically the oysters), the atmosphere, and the drinks I had. Great experience.
I went here aroud lunch time to grab something quick to eat before my Alcatraz trip. I was kind of iffy about going here because it looked a bit pricey. When I got inside and looked at the menu it wasn't as bad as I thought. But, they didn't have much choices on the menu on the take out side. My friend and I ordered the clam chowder and a chocolate chip walnut cookie. The clam chowder was actually really good..it was freshly made with corn, potatos, clams, and BACON..yumO! The soup itself wasn't too thick or too thin just right! It was pretty funny as I opened my container of soup I put my spoon inside and lifted up a big A55 sourdough roll! hahaha I was like WTH?! That sourdough roll was pretty darn good with the soup. As for the cookie....it was AITE!
I think I would come back here again just for the chowder :)
Came here for Happy Hour last Friday evening.

Our group practically tried everything on this menu- nothin else to say except -- YUM!
Had a hot date. We came here. 5 stars for interior space- post and beam, exposed brick, huge windows overlooking the bay. 5 stars for impeccable service- attentive and conscientious without pretense . 1 star for food. Calamari was tough, cold, and deeeeeeep fried. Aside from that, the flavors were oddly paired- imagine the baby of vietnamese (cucumber, bean sprouts, cilantro) and trashy Italian restaurant calamari (you know- frozen, deeply breaded, deeply fried, deeply greasy). Next: salads. My green salad was fine, except for the manchego. They placed a deli slice on the bottom of the plate and built the salad over it. It fused to the plate and I had to scrape it off to get a piece. Unfortunate. Finally- dinner. Duck. The breast was delicious, perfectly cooked. The confit leg was so hard and dry that I could not eat it. yuck.
All and all, a romantic space- but the food is way off the mark. Good place for a drink, but don't waste your time and money on dinner.
Took a few Japanese clients there for dinner because it was the only restaurant on the Embarcaderro that would take last minute reservations with a convention going on in the city that week. I have to say I was really disappointed. The food was average at best, they had a few really odd combinations that were simply not well executed. Service & Ambience were both mediocre. No reason to go back when there are so many other good restaurants in the city.
MY 100TH REVIEW HAD TO GO TO ONE OF MY FAVORITEEEE RESTAURANTS!
There once was a restaurant called, "Dragonfly" in San Jose a couple of years ago, which unfortunately didn't survive. I was so bummed because I've had several special occasions there and loved most of their signature dishes. A few months later, I heard from a friend that "Butterfly" in SF had similar items and that was music to my ears. A couple of my girlfriends and I made a trip to the city to try this place out for dinner. Right when you walk in, it's wide, nice decor which made it very lively. It was nicely dim and the view outside the window was stunning. We got a table for four next to the window.
The item that I came here for was the 'hoisin glazed bbq baby back ribs'. You have to try it! Simply finger-lickin' good. The rest of the girls ordered 'wok seared shanghai garlic noodles, kalua pig with butter lettuce cups, and garlic seared clams and mussels.' Everything was delishh. Service was attentive and made sure we got what we needed. This place is great for any occasion.
The waitresses here are unattendive. Ours ran by us four times before taking our order. The place wasn't busy at all yet it took 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive.
When the food finally came I almost wasn't hungry anymore. After all it was 40 minutes after we sat down. I do not know who has that kind of time for lunch and only can imagine the time lag when this place gets busy.
The food was really very good, but not great - maybe due to the srvice.
I am an avid proponent of 'no tips' if the service doesn't warrant one and so I left none.
What I left was my CreditCard (by accident). When I called in and asked for it they claimed that they hadn't found it. Who know's, maybe it took them another 20 Minutes to find it and I should have left a number to call me back.
So if you like good food and do not care about the service this place with an ok view of the Bay is yours to check out.
HMMM where to start???
I came here for a quick yummy lunch. All I actually got out of it was a quick lunch, not really satisfying though.
The hostess asked us if we had a reservation and we were like "uuuu no" yet she still said it was no problem and gave us a booth with a fantastic view of the bay.
I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and ended up removing the chicken salad and the soggy bread under it because it was drenched in mayo and some Definitely think the bill was mostly for the ambiance and the view, not the food.
Ate here for happy hour on a Wednesday which turned out to be a really good pre-dinner experience.
Got 4 lychee martinis, 3 Pomegranite Mojitos, and ordered the Hoison BB ribs and Kalua pig dish. Everything was great and Chad the bartender was nice and made some great conversation with us during our meal.
While I didn't try the Garlic Seared Noodles whenever I come back I'll have to try this dish out.
The decor was pretty elegant as well and the bathroom was super clean.
And if you think the prices here are too high get a better job you slacker!
This is San Francisco on the Embarcadero for Christ sakes...
I have to start off by saying for as much as this restaurant charges for it's tiny portions, the service was unbelievably slow and inattentive.
I was invited last night to attend my good friends pre-wedding dinner along with seven others. They knew well in advance we had a reservation for a larger party and you would think they would have their staff be more attentive, considering we would spending a lot of money, including having to pay an 18% automatic gratuity.
My husband and I arrived first and were seated. We ended up waiting over half an hour for the rest of our party to show up. In the meantime, it took the staff 20 of those minutes to offer us something to drink. Once the rest of the party came, it took another 30 minutes to ask them what THEY wanted to drink as well as take our orders.
In my opinion, the menu didn't offer much selection and everything seemed to run pretty expensive. We were already strapped for money prior to accepting the invitation to dinner, but felt even worst when there didn't seem to be anything worth the money to order. The others didn't seem overly impressed with the selection either, for that matter.
The hubby and decided to make a meal of appetizers; we ordered one of the fried calamari to split and two orders of the shanghai garlic noodles as our courses. Our first appetizer took over half an hour to arrive and our appetizer courses took another. I will say that although most of the food would be below average in flavor and size, the calamari was very good and the garlic noodles were a decent portion and had plenty of nicely grilled veggies and slices of roasted garlic in them.
Aside from our appetizers and the atmosphere, the service for the price you were paying was HIGHLY lacking and the 18% gratuity was more than what I would have paid for the kind of treatment the bride to be and the rest of us were getting.
Let me elaborate..They made no special attempt to see that our friend was having a good time right before her wedding, which you would think they would if they wanted us to recommend this place to others. I mean at least offer the bride a complimentary drink, dessert or appetizer for being so inattentive. Mind you it was not even crowded at that time and we waited an hour an half total for food and drinks, with only half an hour to enjoy them before having to leave.
I very rarely give two stars but I felt that waiting over an hour for someone to take our order and half another to get our drinks would justify this. The two stars I am giving is strictly for the location and our appetizers. I will also mention that it took them another half an hour to get our bill as my husband and I had to leave early because we had a long drive back to Vallejo and it was already 10pm. Our reservation was for 7:30 and most of that time was just spent on waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence. On another not so positive note, I noticed that the hostess wished everyone else a good night as they were leaving, however, didn't say a word to us.
Overall, I don't recommend coming here if you're starving, broke or just a tourist who has no idea that the city has plenty of other good dining districts. But if you just want to try some decent appetizers, I would tell you to use their "take our" window to avoid the long wait and having to pay a tip. Otherwise, if you truly want some really good fancy Asian fusion, I would recommend trying "The House" in the north beach district. The service there is average but the food will not disappoint and their dessert is just as creative and unique!
Butterfly never disappoints, and Sat. night was no exception. Sharon and Dana, Lesa and Matt, and Paul and I went for dinner, and the evening could not have been more fun or pleasant. First, we were seated at the best table in the house: the banquette for six in the corner overlooking a floor-to-ceiling magnificent view of the water.
Our waiter set the tone for the evening. He was well versed in the various dishes, knowledgeable about the wines, and convivial (and cute) to boot. He paced the courses perfectly, and the order in which they came out of the kitchen was inspired. Between our waiter and the bus staff, the service was seamlessly impeccable. We never had to wait for anything, yet at the same time, we never felt rushed.
And now for the food. Ah, the food. Except for one misstep (the duck rolls), everything was delicious, beautifully presented, and perfect for sharing. The pork served in lettuce cups, smoky and tangy cowboy steak, whole fish, spicy noodles, calamari, fig / blue cheese appetizer, and salmon rolls were a few of the highlights. We ordered tons of food and ate it all. Desserts were yummy, as were the wines (Walter Hensel chardonnay and Turley Old Vine zin).
As we completed our long and leisurely meal, the music became louder and louder until Butterfly the bar / restaurant metamorphosed into Butterfly the lounge-y club scene. We polished off the evening with a few dances, an appropriate end to a very fun evening.
Highly mediocre. Seems like it is trying to be a high-end asian fusion restaurant. Several hot and cold appetizers with about 6-7 main course choices.
The service was good and the decor was ok. None of the dishes were especially memorable, though I admit there was nothing wrong with any of them either.
I had the hangar steak and it was tasty and properly cooked, however, not interesting or worth coming back for.
Either way, a forgettable culinary experience.
