Review from Ron B.
Westminster, CO
There is only one minor downside to the Westminster Butterfly Pavilion, it could be three times larger and still be too small.
This has to be one of THE most wondrous treasures of Colorado, our nation and certainly ranks up there with many of the world's true treasures.
Its a special place to visit any time of the year but when the mid-Winter doldrums set in there is nothing quite like spending a Winter's day in a tropical environment surrounded by butterflies.
Frankly I'm puzzled by post that find there to be an absence of butterflies mid-Winter I live about five miles from the Butterfly Pavilion and have never seen less than a hundred or more in addition to the huge insect/spider collection and so much more.
For those seeking 'quiet serene time' to spend with the butterflies (absence of kids) you can (at additional cost) gain special access during special hours set aside for photographers. -

The Butterfly Pavillion is one of those places that the entire family can enjoy. Insects, spiders, and other creepy, crawly critters dominate one room, sea creatures can be observed and touched in another area of the building, and butterflies flit and flutter around in a climate controlled room that feels like the tropics each day of the year. The gift shop is filled with all kinds of neat things, and is a great place to pick up a birthday or other gift, regardless of whether you pay the admission to see the sights.
On a recent weekend visit, the place was busy, busy and I truly enjoyed hearing the kids share their discoveries with each other. "That's an Araneae!" "Cool, look at this starfish that's so huge!"
Once inside the butterfly pavilion (a nice respite on a cold winter day), I was truly amazed by the butterflies. The color and activity was amazing. -

Terrible. Admittedly, it's January, so there may be some seasonality (I hope for their sake) but since it's all indoors and temp controlled, we figured there would be more to see. We saw about five live butterflies. Exhibits were very amateurish and boring for kids. Overpriced, was $17 for 2 adults and a 1 year old (under 2 was free). That's about $3.50 per fly sighting...
Wait until Spring, or better yet, just skip it. -

The Butterfly Pavilion is a cool place. There are some great insects here and the Butterfly area is amazing. Recently I've been trying to introduce my little one to the place but so far she's not having it. Anything flying around here scares her. Just keep this is mind is you have a little one that frightened by flying things. We are taking it slow and one of these times she'll be able to stay in with the Butterflies.
The place is small, but never seems overly crowded. The butterfly area has some decent lighting for a few quick photos. Getting a photo of someone with a butterfly or two in the shot is not hard. -

Expect kids and no quiet reflection time.
Went around 2pm - no school groups but a ton of kids
Restrooms - two sets:one (at least 4 stalls)in the front of building, one in the play area located near the maze.
The first room contains about 20 "aquariums" housing an array of insects but mainly spiders. Nothing fancy.
Rosie is awesome! My favorite quote from the front desk when I asked her how many Rosies they have, "When Rosie raises her rearend we know she is tired." There are four Rosies.
Petting area: a soft starfish and a rough one, horseshoe crabs
Starfish - when they "mate" their tank is really foggy. They had to clean the tank that day.
Butterfly area - purposely humid. Crammed full of plants. Hanging bananas to attract butterflies and moths.
I expected to see a few butterflies - there were a ton. Some sort of moth the size of a dinner plate.
Children - screaming and running everywhere. Apparently toddlers love to run in circles.
The maze - easy to cheat because they can run under the partitions. Guess it helps to prevent a melt down. -

I decided earlier this year that iwanted to take pictures of giant Americana things. So picture number one was of the giant praying mantis outside the Butterfly Pavillion.
The insect room was cool, lots of live exhibits to go with the pinned down displays. Don't worry, the only walk through exhibit is the butterflies, but could you imagine a walk through with insects and spiders? Would YOU go?
Rosie the Tarantula was out. I was the first to let her sit on my hand for a spell. Very interesting, you can feel each individual leg a lot more than I imagined. Rosie's wrangler held onto my hand while I held Rosie, I'm sure to prevent any surprise movements that would fling her across the room.
Another interactive exhibit had horseshoe crabs and.....um...forgot.
The butterfly atrium is small, but you'd never know it. The well-laid path winds around, and there are so many lively butterflies, it doesn't feel small. I was fascinated! Everyone seemed fascinated and entranced!, Except my peculiar step-daughter who didn't let her 2 y/o son watch the baby butterfly release. What's up with that? (I keep my mouth zipped!)
This is a great place for everyone! -

If creepy crawlies are your thing, then this is the place to be! I mainly come here for the spiders, snakes, and butterflies. They've managed to jam a lot of critters into a small space. The butterfly room is takes up the most space and is the major attraction for me. I especially love when they start doing the releases and watching the butterflies frolic amongst the tropical and carnivorous plants. You can also watch butterflies hatch from their cocoons in this room.
The only things that creep me out here are the cockroaches and beetles. Blech!Listed in: Emilee Out & About

My daughter came to visit me a few weeks ago and she loves insects, fishes, bugs and well...She's like her dad, a real knowledgeable nerd. (Thank God) because I'm a disguised RPG dork.
She loved this place and yes the highlight was holding the turantula, she seemd also fascinated with the roaches (creepy) for the price this place was GREAT!.. lol we also bought some chocolate covered bugs and cheddar worms, to give to my hubby..lol it was hilarious. The butterfly room was beautiful and there was a live turtle. This place is great especially to broaden ones intellectual level with all the information provided. Not to mention I live like 5 minutes from there. -

What a great place to take your kids or grandkids!
A haven from the cold weather in the winter.
Pet a tarantula! Let a Madagascar cockroach crawl on your hand!
If you are patient a butterfly will land on you.
Very educational and fun. -

Don't get me wrong, it's kind of a neat place. Lot's of beautiful butterflies and lush plants. It's tropical and warm (it was a brisk, windy day outside). I think it would be fun just to go and read a book. But after 20 minutes, you'll probably be over it. It's something worth seeing once, but it won't knock your socks off. Do yourself a favor and bring a 3 year old. Watching them is better than anything you'll see alone.

There are only fond memories of this place in my head. My dad looked it up and planned for us (family of 4 adults) to visit while we were on vacation. While it is great for kids, its also great for the 'kid in you.'
We all had a fantastic time...3 of us were taking pictures and it felt like we didn't have enough time to take it all in.
I am jealous for those who can visit here frequently, especially in the winter.
PS - as mentioned, it does get hot!! Even for those of us who are 'always' cold. :) -

Staff were able to answer all of my butterfly questions.
Also, I found it EXTREMELY HILARIOUS that the third item on their posted list of rules was, "NO NUDITY ALLOWED IN BUTTERFLY AREA." Seriously, this was listed before things like "No food or drink." I expressed my disappointed to the staff at not being able to experience butterflies in the nude. -

I love the Butterfly Pavillion. There are a lot of things to do, see, and learn. My son enjoyed touching the hissing cockroach. Now he's old enough to hold Rosie if he wants to. The area with the butterflies is nice and well done. There are tons of plants and things to attract the butterflies. If you wear bright colored clothing, there is a greater chance they will land on you. There is also a turtle in the little pond. Picture opportunities are abundant, too.

Really a fun place. Just a neat little place in the middle of the city. Kinda expensive but worth the price. If you time it right, you can be in there when they release some of the butterflies!

This place was AWESOME!! I took my two little nieces with me and they had a blast!! Great environment for kids under 5. I hate bugs and spiders, however I had the courage to have Rosie the tarantula crawl on the palm of my hand!!
