We have not stayed here recently but several of our friends have and loved it. Prices vary with the season.
We all appreciate the quiet, clean, comfy rooms.
Nice pool and jacuzzi (not a huge pool but large enough to satisfy most swimmers)

We have been quite happy with our two stays at the BGI. (In August and in… Read more »
A friend and I were taking my daughter up to UC Santa Cruz and drop her off. We stopped in Pacific Grove for the night, picking Butterfly Grove Inn via Tripadvisor. Great choice.
The value matched the pricing.
Considering it's in the Monterey area, the price was quite reasonable. The rooms have high ceilings and lots of floor space, refer, micro, fireplace, etc.
The towels were kinda thin, but no problem getting more when needed.
The room we stayed in had a king size bed and a futon that sleeps two.
The breakfast food was large Costco-type muffins, fruit, juice and coffee.
I wished we could have stayed longer to enjoy the surrounding grounds, but we were on a lightning speed trip.
My husband and I took an impromptu trip to the Monterey area early this summer and found this wonderful Inn. Because we had no reservations to stay anywhere, I took out my handy AAA travel guide and found this place. I called several other hotels where we normally stay and the rates were outrageous! I finally called the Butterfly Grove Inn and was quoted a rate of $79 per nite. I made the reservation because I was ready to be settled somewhere for the night. I really did not expect much because of the low rate. When we drove up, I WAS BLOWN away at how nice this place was! I then thought "okay, so the outside of the place is cute. The room will be horrible." I was VERY WRONG! The room was huge, extremely clean and very cute. The furnishings were not ultra modern, but who cares! As a bonus, we were steps away from the Butterfly Sanctuary! I plan on staying here in the next month or so, so I may visit the sanctuary. Can't wait!
Great value for the location. We paid $169/night for the 4th of July weekend this year and had to stay minimum of 2 nights due to the holiday. We stayed in the rooms in the Victorian house. I think next time, we'll try units around the pool.
Regardless, for the price, can't complain. We got a very spacious and clean room with a king bed and futon, mini fridge, micro, coffee pot, large bathroom, fireplace, TV with good stations, and video machine. Important: Ours was a VHS machine, so the DVDs we packed did us no good. Not that we needed them.
The grounds are pretty. We saw a mom and baby deer trot through the parking lot several times. We enjoyed the heated pool and the hot tub (emphasis on HOT--you won't last too long).
Right on Lighthouse, the main strip for Pacific Grove's most popular restaurants, and a short walk to the stunning Ocean View beaches. We plan on going back. So much better than the place I chose last year: Lighthouse Lodge (see review).
Oh, and free continental breakfast 8:00-10:00 each morning included huge muffins, cereal, fruit, coffee, etc.
Very quiet, peaceful, clean, friendly, few blocks from the beach.
Very peaceful location right next to the Monach Grove Sanctuary. It was a nice perk to be able to walk next door and see the butterflies (Nov-March only.) It's a pretty standard motel- rooms were quite clean and the ground are very spacious. It's on a quiet street and most (if not all- not sure) of the rooms are protected from street noise.
We didn't try to get online so can't comment on that. We stayed in the family suite (basically 2 adjoining rooms, each with a bathroom.) One room was quite spacious and the other was a standard motel room. We also had a microwave and refrigerator which was quite handy.
I give it 5, not because its fancy pants 5 star, but for the price/value ratio.
We love pacific grove and we have now found our "spot".
POSITIVES
Simple but fresh breakfast,
value,
ultra clean rooms(I wish I could bring the cleaning lady home- I tipped for the first time in a long time for fab service).
Great pool- hot tub thats hot!
VHS
Next to monarch sanctuary
Across the street from a school where we picniced and played
large grassy area for kids to run around
super safe
Lovely staff
Run by owner, and you could tell.
Beautiful white lights and night.
Room 18- 2 rooms (as described by other rater). Perfect for a family without haveing to pay for 2 rooms.
Never heard anyone else although sold out(not to say they didn't hear our 3 babies).
Not so great.
I'm trying to think for everyone.......
not beach front
original decor
not utlra fancy
dvd not in every room.
We will be going back again and again to this place.
For reference, we stayed at the lighthouse in- while nice, there was mold, food was questionable, no place for kids, and lots of stairs.

Ok, so my wife and I stayed at the Butterfly Grove Inn for Memorial Day weekend May 09, and we were NOT impressed. We have visited Pacific Grove before and stayed at other hotels, so we have a good comparison. During a trip in Feb 09, we spent some time enjoying the Monarch butterflies at the wooded area next to the Butterfly Grove Inn, and so we thought staying at the actual Butterfly Inn a few months later might be worthwhile. Wrong. Here are the problems: (1) The price was only a few dollars cheaper than surrounding Hotels, and yet the breakfast was lame, with only muffins, cold cereal and juice in the lobby. (2) The heat in the room is generated by a gas fireplace (yes ONLY a gas fireplace) that made a ton of generator-type noise and made it hard to sleep. I gave it as high as two stars because the room was decent-sized and we saw a cool deer eating grass 10 meters away from our room. My wife and I recommend the Lighthouse Lodge a few blocks down the road.
