I had a dream that Butter came to Sacramento.  I have sweet sweet dreams of the night that I ordered jello shots from the trailer door with a side of tots. I dreamed of the time that 'Predator' was playing on one of the walls while I was dancing to the beats of the DJ and enjoying my 40 of high life they served me in a paper bag. I have fond memories of meeting a bunch of uptight high roller British dudes here one night and watching them unwind. I also remember dancing with an Easter Bunny on one occasion. Ah! Butter....

Saturday night. Went to a semi-Bible-thumper show at Slim's, and needed more booze to cleanse me of my sins. Butter was perfect!

Walked in (no cover-yay for boobies!), met the girls, bought a giant beer in its classy paper bag and was ready to groove! The music was awesome, the crowd around us was good (tad ghetto when I stopped to look around, but was distracted by the guy on crutches anyway) and just had an all-around good vibe.

I would have loved to stay longer but the crepes were calling our name. For now, Butter... I love thee.

TATER TOTS AND JELLO SHOTS!

White trash at its finest! It's impossible not to have fun at this place! With an extensive menu of our favorite drunk snacks including mac n cheese, chicken nuggets, and spaghetti-os as well as jello shots and 40s in brown bags- what's not to love? Butter attracts all walks of life so it makes for a diverse crowd just looking to have some fun and dance the night away! I went there for a birthday celebration recently and the whole staff including the bartenders were super fun and friendly!

Of course there are a few drawbacks that tend to come with visiting any dive bar....

1.) Try your darnedest not use the toilets if at all possible. They're not the cleanest and some stalls even lack doors.

2.) It's very, VERY loud. This is not the place to try and have any sort of meaningful conversation.

3.) The large crowds and small venue can definitely cramp your style on the dance floor.

But overall... Awesome vibe, great DJ, and cheap thrills!

Personally, I like to stay away from dive bars.  No, no, no . . .  before you judge me, I'm not one of those Marina type people who think they are too cool for school.  I just like a classy type environment where I don't have to worry about stepping in a puddle of vomit.  BUT, I have to admit that Butter has been the best dive bar I've been to.  The easiest way of reviewing Butter is by creating a list of Pros and Cons.

Pros:
1.  The bartenders are nice and they are very fast.
2.  The drinks are "heavy."  I hate weak drinks.
3.  They play a variety of music rather than sticking to one genre.
4.  The environment is somewhat of a hipster crowd.

Cons:
1.  The crowd isn't very good looking . . . yes, that includes me.
2.  It's nearly impossible to move around since it gets so packed.
3.  The venue is very small and there is no room at all!
4.  It's very dark inside.  This can be a huge issue as if beer goggles wasn't enough!
5.  The music is on so loud that you cannot hear the other person talk.  I hope you have your lip reading skills ready!

BUTTER me UP.

I've been here several times during my drunken stupors of SOMA bar hopping and yes, this is the spot for casual fun and lots of good WT eats.

You can't go wrong.

Except if you have too much to drink and you are dancing on top of the bar  . . which they don't mind as long as you ask nicely and tell them you are liable for your own injuries and stupidity.

It is WT to the max and I immensely enjoy the vibe here. People are laid back, cool, and fun.

I can hang with that crowd . . . but only once in awhile. ;)

Good place to chill with tater tots and some mini corn dogs. Bartenders are super chill with no attitude. Awesome.

Recommend.

This was my first visit to a white trash theme bar and I loved it. There's nothing more satisfying that drinking your 40 ounce in a brown bag while girls in 70s reflective hotpants dance on the bar. The beers were cheap. The cocktails were strong (urrrgh - the morning after was a mess). Excellent efficient responsive bar staff. What more could you want? How about some white trash food from their built in trailer? Oh yes.  Bring on the arterie clogging mini-corn dogs, mac and cheese & cheezy tator tots. Yum yum yum.

Walked into this bar on a whim a couple of weeks ago... turns out I'd been there before.  People were walking around with 40's!  haha  That was really funny.  Mighta been because I was already faded though.  Ordered a drink, it was strong and reasonable priced.  Music was decent from what I remember.  That's pretty much all I have to say about this place though... didn't stay long on either visit.   It's just like another yelper said... a white-trash theme bar.

Might see ya there.

Went for a coworkers party and had a good time....

I love a good bartender and the one with the long hair made a special drink a banana split I think...pretty awesome. All of their drinks were pretty great though and the jello shots are worth it....

The random snacks and goodies are cool too. I had some tater tots and a mini corn dogs....deep fried to perfection.

The DJ was cool and kept the dance floor moving as far as I can recall...

This is a chill place to just get drinks and deep-fried deliciousness with friends....

OMG, finally came here, and I was in white trash heaven. 5 dollar cover a  little steep for 10pm (and a bit ironic... didn't think cover charge and white trash belonged in the same sentence).

Miller High Life 32s, crappy late 90s/early 2000 dance music, jello shots, and a deep fried twinkie for my friend's birthday. Awesome.

Neighborhood is seedy. The bar filled with drunk puking Asians 2 buildings down is a mess. Vomit full of rice and fish flooded the street like the Mekong. I'm sure someone's rice rocket got thrown up on that night. Haha.

There's a line in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (my favorite movie) where Butch comments to Sundance about coming upon their old stomping grounds: "Boy, you know every time I see Hole-in-the-Wall again, it's like seeing it fresh for the first time." That's kind of how I think about Butter -- it's not everything to everyone -- but when I stop in, it is to me.

You could say I grew up on Butter, heck I was there for opening night way back when. I've closed the bar down, opened the bar up, guest-bartended, thrown all kinds of parties and events there, and almost had a drink named after me. Almost.

The guys that run the place, well they're just stand-up folks. It's a motley crew who ends up there these days, but when I stop in, order up a Miller High Life tallboy (they bring it out in a paper bag but always remember I like it served with 2 wine glasses!), well I just know that I've found my hole-in-the-wall.

Plus, how can you turn down frito pie?? If you want fresh mint and coriander in your cocktails, go somewhere else. If you want a sprinkle of Tang around the rim of your martini glass, well then, I'll see you at the bar.

mmmmmm Butter.....I never thought places like this exsisted...until now.

I went for my friends birthday a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. I parked down the street and finally stumbled across what looked like a hole-in-the-wall bar. I didn't know what to expect.

I walked in with assistance from the doorman (very nice), and was amazed at what I had found. 80's women's wrestling videos were streaming on the walls, girls with jello shots for sale were walking around, people were drinking 40's wrapped in paper bags, and there were numerous specialty cocktails up on the wall to dip my feet into. I'm a vodka soda kinda girl, but when you walk into Butter...you just wanna try in all!

It's a circle bar so it has fairly easy access at all times with 2 bathroom stalls in the back. In the corner I noticed, yet didn't partake in, a 'trailer' where you could order grub from the window! I soooooo wanted the fried mac and cheese or at least to try the deep fried Twinkies...but I didn't :(.

It's a mix of a biker bar, meets marina, meets 1989 meets white trash and I loved every minute of it!

I will definitely have to go back with friends and try their specialty shots! uh oh ;)

This place is weird.
It looks and serves just like a Mission dive bar with a name straight out of the Castro yet is around the bends of SOMA yet has like a bro and broho clientel (think Marina lite) and serves 40s in a paper bag yet charges for cover yet still packed to the brim yet I wasnt THAT annoyed at it cause I dont know why.

If they dont have cover, I'd go.

Cover charge. I suppose for the DJ.

Chill place. Is the trailer trash vibe they're going for just a gimmick? I dunno, but I love how this place runs. Our bartender was awesome: attentive and quick. Cheesy tots and spaghettios never tasted any better.

Came here over the wknd with a small group of friends to finally check out this naughty-by-reputation bar.

What a place...!!  So trashy...so simple...so tattooed...wish we came with a bunch of people ready to party.  I love the "don't fuck with me" ambiance of Butter and the classic food and drink menu.  The cherry bomb drink my bf got was really yummy .. my prom night something seemed innocent with the fizz/soda pop flavor but it def had an alcohol after taste.

I came.. I saw.. I conquered those o-so-fuck-me-up-tasty jello shots.  Mine was orange flavored and had a bite but apparently the green/blue ones were tastier.  They sure give u alot, too :)  Didn't try any of the microwaved food but will def be back .. with my party face and beer goggles on.

Great bar.

Coming with friends from out of town, Butter just seems like one of those crazy early 90s white trash themed bars.

What excites me is that there is no fear of going hungry with the drunken munchies - Butter has you taken care of. Watch some twisted wrestling matches, grab a Jello shot (they were sold out that night, though *tear*) and order some Spaghetti-O's or White Castle Burgers. AN excuse to eat like crap when drunk? I'll take it

Note that drinks with a three cute girls ordering Vodka Redbulls goes as ordered:
First Round: $26
Second Round (apology for no Jello shots) $24
Third Round $16 (Jessica was the damn lucky bitch to pay for this round)

One downfall - the bathroom. It's pretty gross and the broken toilet on the end of the girl's is often used by boys in need.

Oh man... Where do I even begin?

Friday Night. Buddy's Birthday. Party Bus. Second Stop: Butter.

We had already done some damage at Buckshot, but the party really got wings when we arrived at Butter.

A far cry from the urban symmetry of SOMA, this dive bar acts as the true mecca of White Trash.

How many places in SF can you order up a 32oz Miller in a paper bag with a side of Tater tots!?

With a full blown menu made of only the supreme goodies from a gas station, we were celebrating in high style. The bartenders are fantastic, outgoing and the vibe was on a constant rise as top 40 hits were bouncing off the walls.

It's not a huge space, but the crowd is great, prices are decent and the whole gig is pretty damn fun.

Ya'll need to check this out!

While trying to hail a cab after a bachelorette party at DNA Lounge, the gals and I found the Butter bouncer hailing us over from across the street (funny sight).  Bone-weary from a long evening and lots of drinks, we were ready for the night to end but one of the gals insisted that we MUST check out Butter--it's a "white trash" bar.  Haha.  In hindsight, I now understand what she meant.

Music - absolutely loved it.  I don't think I've ever been to a bar that played "Take On Me"
Service - soooooooo FRIENDLY! and they even refill your water for you w/o you having to ask.
Food - perfect place to munch after clubbing/drinking.  OMG, the selection of food is definitely a selling point.
Bar - plenty of seats
People - very friendly, good mix, unpretentious.
Ambience - low-key w/cool stuff playing on the walls.

This may very well be my new favorite bar.  Next time, I'll have to go at a reasonable hour when I'm more alert and have the tummy space to try more snacks and drinks.  Maybe I'll muster up the courage to check out the restroom that everyone's been mentioning--eww!  For now, I LOVE the concept of this place!

Nothing about this place is trashy or white-trashy.

Everything about this place is ironic.  Irony taken to the extreme.  Let's name all the drinks after what we perceive to be white trash items; let's deep-fry everything because that's what all rednecks eat; let's project clips from the SPIKE channel, like daredevil videos and skiers falling down mountains because that's what white trash watch.

Let's be ironic, yay!

That's pretty much this bar in a nutshell.

But I still like it because, aite here we goes:

+ The drinks are good, albeit a bit pricey (~$7+). I tried my friend's Junkyard Dog (delish!) and got a Whitetrash Driver myself.  Pretty good stuff, at not-so-white-trash prices.
+ I actually like the SPIKE channel (yes, for purely ironic reasons), so I immensely enjoyed the random clips of stupid people projected on the wall.
+ Deep-frying foods is always the right decision.  I tried the mini corn dogs, and they were FANTAB.  Prices are like $3-$5, so it's not too bad. On my way out, I saw that they had Frito Pie and got really excited, so I made a mental note to come back here and try that.
+ Also tried some jello shots, which was entertaining and am glad they had this here because I haven't had jello shots since I was in college.

Also, a couple notes: You would think there'd be an infestation of hipsters standing around being ironic, but the crowd is pretty mixed, which is good.  The music is also waaaaaay too loud, but they play some good stuff.

Overall, I enjoyed this place, even though at times I did feel like it was pretty offensive and typical of San Francisco liberals to be ironic and make fun of actual people's lives.  In that sense, it's really not funny at all.

But anyway, if you go, I hope the irony's not lost on you because that's pretty much the whole point of this place.

Oh, and the deep-fried stuff, of course.

Came here for a friends bday and LOVED IT! There is no dress code, drinks are cheap and the staff is super friendly!

There is plenty of parking all around the sidestreets and there are parking lots that charge 10 bucks..which is not that bad! The atomosphere is a tpyical bar but they have a huge projection that shows a movie while you drink. Over at the food area is where they have a trailer sized kictchen which is cute. They offere tots, deep fried twinkies, cheese sticks, MAC n CHEESE!

Drinks are decent sized and avg. What I like is that they serve a 40 in a brown paper bag. They also have 2 dollar jello shots that are pretty stong! You'll have to spend a min of 10 bucks to use your debit card.

Overall I like this place, music is good, there is tons of seatings, friendly atmosphere, and GOOD BAR FOOD

3.5 stars if I could!!  This place was not at all what I expected when I first walked in - - which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

It's a lot smaller than I thought and let's just say the seating and decor (projector screen showing old school WWF wrestling) is pretty minimal.  I dug the metal trailer for the food counter though.

That atmosphere is super laid back and the bartenders are chill.  I didn't try any of the food here (tator tots anyone??) but the drinks are relatively inexpensive and they have mugs of pretzels at the bar (YES!).  I tried the tangtini (Absolut Mandrin, triple sec, orange juice with a tart crunchy Tang rimmed glass) - very yummy and light!  I tried Kat C.'s Prom Night Punch and it tasted like yummy cherry soda!  I also tried a friend's Latchkey Tea and it was strong as hell - getting your $7.50 worth with that one!  How could I not mention the done properly waxed Dixie papercup Jello shots for $2!!!!  I'd personally recommend the lime ones =P.

I'll probably be back to pre-party.  Mighty is right around the corner =D.

I've lived in San Francisco for a year and a half now, and this continues to be my favorite watering hole in the entire city.  Yes, it's dirty, yes, the clientele is trashy, and yes, the theme is cheesy as hell.  But if Butter is all of those things, then I'm the dirtiest, trashiest 'ho there ever was, and I'm damn proud to be in such good company.

This is a great bar!!

We went on a Saturday night when there was a $5 cover but it was cool because it was for a fundraiser.  $2 Jello shots, $3 PBR, and $5 cranberry vodkas.  The owner bought us a round since it was our friend's birthday.  All of the drinks we had that night were pretty cheap.  Some guy was going around handing out free jello shots which was pretty cool.  There were a good amount of guys around but lots and lots of groups of women were shuffling in and out so the ratio always seemed to be pretty good.  The bouncer was really cool too.  When we were outside getting some air, he was rapping and singing to the songs with me.  I didn't have any of the food from the trailer but it was nice to have the option.

I have to give a special shout out to the DJ: Kevin Mr. Kind.  He's one of my favorite DJs out of all the ones I've come across in SF.  I'll only make the trip back here if he's the DJ.  He played Hip Hop, high energy, hits all the way back from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, as well as all your current top 40.

Cheap drinks.  Great DJ.  Cool bouncer and owner.  A great place to have a great night!

Free entry, tater tots, and an old soda vending machine that produces 32 oz beers all neatly wrapped in a brown paper bag. Hella!

What a trashy little joint! I love it though. Nothing like taking a piss while having a drunk chick sitting down in the bathroom, crying on the phone about how she is ugly, and the whole time I am releasing my trashy 32 of Miller beer that I just downed from the nice vending machine.

There is nothing like the random microwave food when you are half ass drunk! Yes, tater tots, easy mac, and a whole list of other cheap and microwavable goodies. Oh and to boot, remember the chick who was crying in the bathroom while I took a nice long leak?  She needed an extra dolla to get herself some tots......I hooked her up... she needed something happy because running mascara looks trashy and she obviously was having a shitty night..

So in the end.. Yup Butta Me Up!

This place was pretty sweet. Went to a friends bday party there. They had a table set aside for us right in front.

The drinks were strong and didn't taste like = 1 star
The owner/bartenders are really nice and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. = 2 stars
The music was great and kept me dancing = 3 stars
The deep fried yummy-ness of fried peanut butter and jelly! = 4 stars

The reason why they don't get 5 stars? Well I don't frequent straight bars much, but in all seriousness the overall smell of the bar was a little worse than the bathroom at the Badlands in Castro. Once the crowd filled in the smell was gone.

I recommend:
1) White Trash Driver
2) Prom Night Punch (that shizz was delicious, can't remember much after the 5-6th I had)
3) Deep fried twinkies

I guess it wasn't crowded because I went relatively early. 7PM early. Contrary to what I expected, the drinks were kinda expensive. $9 for a shot of Jack and a PBR, if I remember correctly. Still, Butter is so much fun. Everyone gets in the white trash spirit. I have never been one to enjoy reality TV shows that showcase one crotch-grabbing cross-eyed fool after another, but man, I was really into it that night! The entire bar was watching and yelling, "OH!!!! Ow!!! OOOF!!!"

The bartender was HILARIOUS. I ordered nachos and he came out of the kitchen saying, "Man, I put this canned cheese in the microwave for three minutes and it's still cold!" That made me want to hug him.

I'm pretty sure that I looked pretty unclassy when I licked the Tang powder rim off the side of my Tangtini...

...I'm pretty sure that Butter is trashy enough not to judge.

This was the first stop on our pub crawl- I must say I was disappointed that they were out of Jell-O shots. What- how could this be?!? But the drinks on their board were pretty tasty-  Junkyard dog and Latchkey Tea ($7 for a mixed drink). A big plus for the complimentary shots we kept getting from the bartender. We were here earlier in the night so it wasn't very crazy- also a plus.

A few people from our group got a ride back to the Mission on a firetruck- a definite plus for available transportation.

This Recessionista is obsessed!

Who doesn't love a place where three of the many things on the menu are a jello shots, a deep fried twinkie and a 32 oz bottle of MGD - SERVED IN A BROWN PAPER BAG?!   It's freaking fantastic.  They just need to pull more people during happy hour...  it's pretty dead until later in the night.  But when it gets going, there's no better place to be.

The girl I stood next to at the bar put it perfectly "You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the girl"!!

I love how trashy this place is!!!!!!!

Grape soda in their drinks, deep fried foods served in the trailer, and me all drunk.  Good times!

Total awesomeness. OK, so I had a bit of a buzz when we arrived here during my bachelorette night out, but not too much of a buzz to recall how cool this place was. Most. Awesome. Bartenders. Ever.!

My girls and I waltzed in wearing our dresses and me with my flashing tiara and hot pink boa and the bartender warned us ... "You know this is a white trash bar, right?" Heh. Yes, we did. (They must not get a ton of bachelorette parties in this hizzouse but seriously they should.) They brought on the Jell-O shots (not that great, but who the heck cares) and took our orders at the bar. Of course I had to get the "Shotgun Wedding" even if it was a shot of Jack Daniels and a tall can of Budweiser. It was badical.

Some dude comes up and is talking to me forEVer and eventually (being a bit intoxicated) I probably started making goofy faces about him toward my friends and the bartenders. Seriously, the guy seemed harmless but would not. shut. up. And so cool -- the bartender gets the guy's attention, motions him to the side of the bar and I didn't see him again the whole night! Dude, the bartenders were looking out for us!

We grabbed the big booth, ordered some nacho-cheese-covered tater tots (good, but surprisingly not as amazing as I'd expected, considering I love tater tots and nacho cheese on their own) and boogied for quite some time. What good fun! Want to go back!

I went to Butter last night for their latest (and greatest) creation, karoke on Sunday night.  This might have been the most talented group of singers, they knew all the words, they truly performed the songs!  Do not miss Singing Sundays!  Great energy, fun people, excellent night.

The drinks were strong and the prices were pretty inexpensive.  Very attentive bartenders.  It is nice to find a laid back bar that isn't worried about being the coolest, sexiest or trendiest; instead they provide a quality bar with chill people.

If you haven't been in a while, check out Butter.  I found myself saying "Why don't I come here more often" as I was walking out the door.

the only other time i had been in here was a long time ago when a friend insisted that we continue to get trashed by getting jello shots at butter.  this time i was sober and able to better assess the place. and wow this really is a white trash bar. i think this must be the ghettoest bar i have ever been

the trailer in the back sells microwaved and deep fried delicacies like jalopeno poppers, tater tots, mini corn dogs, white castle, etc.  their drinks include mixing alcohol with sunny d, welchs, hawaiian punch.  they also have this thing where they put a pickled egg in a shot and you eat the egg then take the shot.  the eggs have been pickling for weeks.  they are chalky. the egg is free.  enough said.
