Hated the smoke... I'm from California.
Loved the unpretentious atmosphere.
Loved the mix of patrons.
Both young and old, with varying levels of prettiness.
Loved watching the drunk fools.
Loved the wood paneling setting.
Loved the drag queens.
Liked the drinks. Not strong enough.
Had a GREAT time.
Well, who doesn't playing cards with a frumpy drag queen black jack dealer along drinking cheap gin and tonic all night? Mixed crowd at times. Mostly Gay.
Wish it was a smoke free environment.
I went to the Mary Edith Pitts show this past Saturday night and it was absolutely fabulous! The show was funny and empowering, and the DJ played great dancing music afterwards.
Being a straight female, sometimes the crowds in gay bars will make you feel uncomfortable (what is "she" doing here?)... but I loved it here because it was very laid-back. Everyone was friendly and the bartenders made great drinks (and strong!). There is no cover and parking is free :D
*If you plan to see the show, my advice is to get there early so you can get a good spot to view.
They used to let me in without an ID when I was 20 yrs old. The karaoke night is pretty fun, but nothing else is that great about this place. If you're averagely good-looking, then you'll get lots of attention from the old men who like to perch themselves on the railing upstairs. Enjoy!
I enjoy Burkhart's on occasion but find the clientele interesting. The parking lot is always full of cars with fun counties like Newton, Harralson, etc. listed on them which is pretty indicative of most of the clientele's origins as well. I'm sure some locals go there but maybe they just haven't registered their cars in metro Atlanta yet. Bartenders are excellent. Shows are excellent. Patio is wonderful in the summertime.
Burkhart's is definitely the best bar to go to. The crowd at Burkhart's is very friendly and aren't pretentious and snobbish like most of the guys are at Blakes. The bartender's are the BEST and make the best drinks. I am there basically every Saturday night having a blast. The Armorettes are awesome. I love me some Mary Edith Pitts. The money they raise benefits local HIV and AIDS organizations. This is definitely my bar of choice.
Burkhart's is a winner if you go here for Happy Hour! The staff are always nice, the foods are reasonable, and the drinks are always stiff. The gay dudes here were always friendly. My usual were the 9 oz steak with fries and gravy for $6 bucks! My fav Happy Hour spot in Hot-lanta.
Go see the Armorettes here. They are the funniest camp drag act I have ever seen.
Burkharts is a great place to go have a drink with friends. The space is actually really large including the patio area. The crowd is always pretty diverse but usually more mature (and I really don't mean old when I say that). They apparently serve food, but I've never tried it.
It's just a good space to hang out.
Jesus wept, honey...have some communal popcorn!
Burkharts is just a damn good time I don't care who you are...I've never had a bad experience here. The bartenders are always super attentive and sweet; I always get a smile with my drink and I love watching the drag shows! I'd rather go here for a night out than anywhere else in Atlanta because I feel welcome and safe - I don't have to worry about being outnumbered by assholes and skanks. Everyone gets along with each other and it's just a really warm environment. You just want to hug everyone! And it's one of the few spots left where you can smoke inside, enjoy cheap drinks, and get a handful of popcorn to nomnomnom!
My other half and I wanted to learn how to play craps, so we decided to have dinner at Burkhart's before our gambling lesson. I had seen other people eat here before, but I hadn't tried the food. I was pleasantly surprised. I had steak and my other half had the fried shrimp. They were both really good and cheap. We both ate for under $20. We probably won't make it a regular dining spot, but if you want a quick bite before the Armorettes, it's definitely a viable alternative.

Regardless of where we start the evening, we almost always end up at Burkhart's. The drinks are… Read more »
Burks is another fine example of just how dreadful the nightlife is in Atlanta for gay folks these days, and how the old reliables have lost their identity. Mind you, for almost 13 years it's been my favorite bar, but the recent changes to the place leave me cold. I'm sure the draconian city of Atlanta and it's asinine nightlife policies have contributed, too.
Gone are the days when there was just music and drinking and cruising. Now there is a nightly non stop assault of vulgar (and not funny) drag queens or ear shattering karaoke. If you really need a neighborhood bar I would recommend Amsterdam. Burks has long past it's prime.
Look ya'll - it is what it is. This is one of Atlanta's oldest gay bars and even though it's not my favorite, I usually enjoy myself when I'm there.
I like that they have a varied schedule of nightly activities including karaoke, trivia, and drag shows (Atlanta wouldn't be Atlanta without it's vast array of female impersonators... one of the reasons why I love living here). There is a laid back attitude among the patrons and the crowd is a blend of all ages, all races, and all backgrounds.
Drinks are good (and pretty cheap), the staff is friendly, the shows are entertaining, parking is ample, and they have a full kitchen available all day. My advice is to anticipate having a good time, but don't expect much more. Now that I just come to have fun it doesn't bother me anymore that the bathrooms need to be updated, the air is extra smoky, and all of the fixtures and furniture are dingy.
I find that we usually end up here when we just want to hang out and play pool, or just chill. The bar has a definitely more mature crowd, which is nice, because it attracts all types. Karaoke with Kitty Le Claw can be lots of fun, and the drag there is always hilarious. The music is good, the step up is pretty neat (it almost looks like an old western saloon), and there is a back patio for those that like to be outdoors. It can get a bit smoky, but nothing a southerner shouldn't already be used to.
Just do me one favor, please don't eat the popcorn! Yuck!
Burkhart's is more of an older crowd, but I definitely recommend checking out Sunday night's Armorettes show. it's full of "camp" drag which, althoughproblematic at times b/c it plays on Black and white trash stereotypes, is still pretty hilarious. it starts at 9 PM but if you want to get a good view, i suggest getting there by 8:30 b/c it's a very small space where the performing goes on. the rest of the space is pretty big including an outdoors patio where a psychic lady hangs out. there's Karaoke some nights too but that you can find anywhere. Armorettes is unique to Atlanta, and all the money the Armorettes raise from tips goes directly to AIDS service providers. they've raised like over 1.2 million dollars since opening up the show about 10 years ago.
I ended up at Burkharts with a group of friends after my birthday one year. From what I remember it was a pretty decent place and all the people were really cool. There was a drag show that night that was pretty kickass and the drinks are pretty cheap. Yay Burkharts!
Another one to file under Generic Gay Bar. Only unlike Blake's this one usually has generic average joes. Oh, and I made the mistake of eating the popcorn. I'm going to throw up now...
