PROS: so much to do in this park! mini golf, ride a train, jogging, hiking, paddle boat, camping, fishing!
CONS: you do have to pay.. but often times.. they dont really check/care. I'm not a fairfax resident.. and I've never had to pay. you have to pay for mini golf, camping, train ride, boat rental. Oh and it's a bit crowded during the nicer days. It closes at sunset.. so expect a lot of traffic exiting the park then.. i was stuck in traffic for 30 min trying to get out of the park when it was closing. not fun.

This park is awesome. There is soooo much to do here that you could be occupied for ages.
Only thing is its not free if you dont live in the county. They did the worst job of checking for that though so you probably wont have to pay.
There is volleyball, frisbee golf, some golf, fishing, an ice cream parlor and more. It also has some fantastic trails that go around the lake. I used to run here when I was in high school and one of our big cross country meets used to be here. The trails are great for running, biking or just walking. They also have benches in spots here and there around the lake in case you just want to take in the view. I came here once and rented a row boat and had a blast. The boat rentals were very cheap and allowed me to have the boat for hours for one flat fee. Only problem is the day was windy and I nearly couldnt row my boat back hahah. The park ranger had to tow some boats back in that day actually hahah.
If you havent been here come and see! Its a wonderful place to go, whether you are young or old.

oops... i had sex in your lake. oops... it says no swimming. oops... i don't pay attention to rules/laws so good. oops... you couldn't catch us 'cause we had sex behind the boat when no one was looking.
okay, so this park is a-otay. i didn't like the fact that they didn't have canoes and only row boats. also, shut up you little shits. there's people trying to have sex in peace out here.
would come out here again for a bbq, though. it's a chill spot. plus, i peeped a new spot to have sex in that's even more discreet.

4.5 Stars...
I've been hoarding places to review, waiting until I found the one to be my very special 200th. I was thinking along the lines of Farrah Olivia again (before they closed - though they retracted this within 24 hours of announcing their closing), but was won over by a recent visit to Burke Lake Park.
Just 20-25 minutes from the city, it's really a local metro secret for kids of all ages. Don't let the ironic resemblance of the 70 yo+ ticket collector (who rocks blue pin stripe overalls w/ a matching hat) to Mr. Conductor from Thomas the Tank Engine fool you into thinking this is a little kid ride. Well, it is a little kid ride - but when we went, we had the pleasure of passing a crop of bikini clad sunbathing 20 somethings - like pumpkins, only human...and almost naked. Besides, who doesn't love a train ride?
If Choo-chooing along with a pack of 5 year olds isn't your thing...there's plenty more to get yourself into. Boat rentals (both motor and row) are available for all day flat rate rentals, and Frisbee/Mini golf courses are scattered through the park. So, pack a picnic to enjoy on the water or grass and don't forget to reward yourself with something sweet from the ice cream parlor before you leave.

I've been training for a marathon and I needed a place for my long runs. I'm glad I decided to pick Burke Lake, this is by far one of my favorite places to run. Part of trail is paved but most of it isn't so it's great for long distance training. There are some short hills so again this is great for training. The restroom facilities are pretty decent, nothing fancy just basic (No Spice Simmering Potpourri). I've been training in the winter and I've seen lots of people running, biking, and walking, I'm not sure if it gets crowded in the summer.
My office had a team building event twice in the last two years and we enjoyed the lake, the volleyball courts, the convenient grills, and the playground. There are also benches around the lake so you may sit and watch the ducks, the lake, and people. In the summer, there is a train for children and an ice parlour.
Don't take your road bike here as most of the trail isn't paved so I would reconmend taking your hybrid or mountain bike. Also don't go "Lance Armstrong" here since there are lots of runners and walkers and they might not know you are behind them. Also watch out for the lovers (the ones holding hands, kissing, and sometimes standing in the middle of the trail just staring at each other). Please !

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to laze around Burke Lake. I love camping there! It's so close by and "easy level" camping for a non-camper like myself. If you need anything you can hop in your car and drive off or walk to the nearby camp site lodge and pick up something at their store. Definitely fun for groups and very affordable.
Another fun thing to do is grab a few friends to take a boat or two onto the lake and just layout or fish. I love that the park is so close by and wish more of my friends would embrace and use it. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful, questionable with the too-cool highschool girls working in the ice cream shop, but I would probably be flustered too if I scooped ice cream all day to screaming kids and their parents surrounded by such a great park you couldn't just frolic in all day.
Can't wait til it gets a bit cooler so I can go camping again!

Great place for group bbq parties with outdoor grills and even
beach volleyball. There are seperate picnic tables scattered all
around the park, some even with a tent on top. Conveniently close
by with no fee (not including mini-golf or renting out a boat).
During the summer, you can find people relaxing on the grass getting a
tan and reading book; nice and private since it's a large space.

Fairfax County has some nice parks but this is my favorite. Not only is there a lake, camping, walk/running trails, a fitness course and space for bbqing and partying, there is a full and intense mini-golf course here and miniature train near the carousel! Fantastic! I've seen the sign saying that out of county residents have to pay for parking but i've never actually seen anyone at the little parking hut asking for IDs.
the mini-golf here is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and kids. it really is a good course and the train ride is something everyone needs to experience. a few times in my case because i didn't remember going on it as a kid. and the walking trail is really long and wide enough for you to pass or be passed by bikes, runners, or the occasional deer.

Sometime this spring we'll break 75 degrees and actually get to enjoy the outdoors and parks. When that happens, Burke Lake is a good bet ... it's got a little bit of everything for everyone.
First off, if you're not a Fairfax County resident - gasp! - you're gonna have to pay to get into the park on weekends. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... the MAN is always keeping us down, I know. There are worse injustices in the world, and just remember your $$$ are helping keep that port-o-potty you'll be using after your picnic nice and, uh, pristine.
As for what to do, this park actually has a little bit of everything. A nice little loop around the lake for you hikers, runners and bikers. Mind you, it's pretty flat and isn't all that interesting, but it'll do. You can also do the frisbee golf thing, fish, rent a boat, kayak, play volleyball in the sand pits ... and there are plenty of open areas and grills to stake your picnic claim and get your BBQ on. Hell they even have a 18 hole par 3 course for you weekend hackers, and putt putt for the golf challenged. The course is a par 3, so keep expectations in check, and your blood pressure.
So when it warms up, step away from the nice warm glow of your LCD monitor or the soft caress of your XBOX controller eh? Get out and live a little.

So, I've been to this park about a million times during my undergrad days and never really thought it was that great. I mean, it's nice break from all the suburbia that surrounds it- but there was nothing really special about it.
In fact, I used to think the best thing about this park was the disc golf course.. or more specifically the people playing Frisbee golf as most of them appear to be in an, um, "altered" state of mind and are very friendly.
However, I've had re-evaluate this park however since my last two visits included letting my puppy (illegally) off leash to run and slide down hills on the empty golf course during the last big snow and also a semi-private lake side picnic during which a goose stole a receipt out of my purse. So both entertaining and enjoyable visits. I wouldn't say this park is GREAT in and of itself, but you can make the experience quite enjoyable.
As previously mentioned: there is a campground, the Frisbee course, a golf course, a trail around the lake, a dock, a kiddie train, a mini golf course, a carousel, picnic tables and barbecue shelters/grills.
I'd say if you're looking for a place to hang out and enjoy the great outdoors or looking for an inexpensive family outing, this is probably a great location. If you're looking for an area to enjoy more physically challenging pursuits- mountain biking, hiking, etc.- then you're better off somewhere else.

Very pretty park with a well-maintained trail circling the lake -- around 4 miles or 1.5 hrs. There are play and party areas for kids and a seasonal carousel and small-guage RR. You can picnic, barbecue, fish from a dock, or hike.
