Its good food, but nearly $17 for a burger and a beer? Yikes.

Things Near Church and Market that Cost Less than a Burger and Beer at Burgermeister:

A dozen oysters at Woodhouse
Four slices of pizza from Cybelle's
Two burritos from Casa Mexicana
An all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet for TWO people at Cathay's
Just about any menu item at Home, Chow, or Chilango

Hey guys, that burger was good.  And now I am full and warm and I have a pleasant taste in my mouth.

What do you guys want to do now, oh wait, Burgermeister took all my money and now I am poor and have 20 dollars worth of Burgermeister in my stomach.

Damn.  Should have grabbed a burrito next door.

I thinked I hyped myself up a little too much for Burgermeister.

So, for about a month (or maybe even longer), my roommate and I have been passing by Burgermeister either during our commutes or after leaving Safeway. From afar it looked like something I NEEDED to try. As a result, the thought of the yet-to-be-consumed Burgermeister burger was constantly on my mind.

Finally, I ate there. My thoughts? Meh. I went on a weekday, so I was able to partake of their special, which was $9.50 for a burger (I ordered mine with cheddar), fries and a fountain drink. Not bad, but still kind of pricey if you ask me. The burger was satisfactory. I'm a pretty big burger person, and this tasted like something I could make at home. Maybe next time I'll try something a little different. Garlic fries perhaps? Bleu Cheese on my burger? Maybe mixing things up will enhance my Burgermeister experience.

After a friend glowingly recommended Burgermeister, I decided to give it a try. I was underwhelmed.

Pros:
Good selection of garnishes with the burger.
Variety of burger choices from red meat to vegan.
Tangy slaw.
The burger mostly tasted pretty decent -- turkey burger--it's Thanksgiving, you know -- but see the cons.

Cons:
If the San Francisco health surcharge was on the price list, I somehow overlooked it. (I don't object to the surcharge itself, only to non-disclosure, which leads to "was I cheated" moments.
The cashier playing  with her hair was kinda gross.

and the biggest con:
there were occasional burnt marks among the grill marks. I am *not* a fan of burnt food. So I'd be enjoying my bites and occasionally hit a yuck, burnt, spot

I probably will not be returning. Life is too short to be eating $9 burgers (including slaw and garnishes) that are just okay, sorry

but it was okay enough that I'm not going to disown my friend

From the day this place opened (2004 or '05?) until the day I moved away 1.5 years ago, I ate here approximately twice/week.  I lived right around the corner on Duboce.
The best burgers I've ever had.  I've brought many friends.  They say the same thing.

Each week I got a Bacon Cheesburger with Swiss, medium rare one day and the Chicken Cheese Steak another day.  I tried other things too, but these were my staples.  They use Niman Ranch beef, which is wonderful to begin with.  They cook it exactly as you order it, and I mean exactly.

Their fries, ahhh, their fries...  Their regular fries are really good.  Their curly fries are better.  Their garlic fries?  Legions of vampires have been vanquished by a single order of their garlic fries.  They saute copious amounts of freshly chopped garlic in a little bit of oil, then pour the whole mix over your freshly deep-fried potatoes.

The cheese steaks are not like what you'll find on the east coast, so don't expect that, but they still very very good.

They always hire friendly, helpful and very capable people.  Obviously, they all got to know me very well, and knew what I was going to order before I walked through the door.  When I get back to SF, I'm going to eat nothing but sushi and these burgers.

- When are you going to open one up here in Hawaii???  Come on, you know you want to.

My wife is always bugging me for a Burgermeister burger. She digs the veggie options they offer while I'm never upset about having to eat here. I mean, they do have some killer burgers.
I'm not sure what I can add that hasn't already been said about these hamburgers.
They are consistent and the staff has always been friendly with us. I know they have a beer special too but I can't recall the times or the deal...think it is $1 off drafts.
One thing I always forget and I wish they advertised them a little more....are the buffalo wings. Burgermeister actually has some great wings. Classic NY style. I will have to remember this the next time I'm bitching about SF not having any good wings.

This one's going to be quick:

Dear Burgermeister-
A veggie burger should *not* cost the exact same amount as a Niman Ranch beef burger.  $9 for a Boca patty on a bun?

Thanks but no thanks,

I have such will power.

As I parked across the street at my local safeway to do some super healthy shopping, I caught a whiff of something special.

No, not the "10 day old homeless guy stale fart" smell.  The kind of smell that would force you to punch 12 old ladies just to get to.

It was a splendid combination of bacon, beef and frying oil.

I quickly did the right thing.

I aborted all healthy options and walked across the street.

After making it home with my recently purchased burger in hand, I got caught talking to my neighbor for about 10 minutes.

Did it ruin the burger?

Oh hell no.  It created a super greasy (in a good way) amorphous blob of heavenly goodness.

Yeah, it was damned delicious.

My only two beefs (ha, get it?) with this place are

1) no credit cards (I think I am slowly losing this battle)
2) pretty damned expensive (and this is coming from the guy who bought 10 cases of Aspray just to send out as joke gifts)

Next time I go to Safeway, I am bringing nose plugs.

Will.

Burgermeister is as good as they say. But it is also pricey and the burger size itself was a little unmanageable for me. But nevertheless, it is a tasty burger and they live up to the hype. I just wish my money went a little further there (wtf, cash only??)

All I know from the judgement of my friends that we all came to the conclusion that we hated Sparky's diner, never eat there!
We came to Burgermeister for dinner and guess what? We went from feeling like depressed hungry people into feeling like champions!
At least we weren't able to finish our meals because they were huge, and that's a good thing!
Please don't support Burma burgers at places like Sparkys but enjoy real American glory at Burgermeister! ^_^

A $9 burger that made my stomach wrench and evacuated the 1/2 of what I ate upon stepping foot into the john.  A cleaning solvent on the grill is the only logical solution (pun intended). I lost my apetite not even eating 1/2 of the burger. Fries and 2 buck wine, began to taste leaden in my mouth.   A 100 rating on cleaniliness maybe admirable, but where cleaning solvents land and accumulate is no better than seeing critters up the wall.
YUCK

The inside of this place is clean and they have adequate seating.
I have ordered two things, chili cheese fries and a Chicago style dog.
They were both delicious yet a little pricey.
It is strange that they put mango in their chilli cheese fries.

This place gets 5 stars because they do burgers the way they should be.  I love to grill but this place is as good as grilled burgers get.  I love just walking by the place to enjoy the great aroma of burgers on the grill.

So how do you achieve the perfect burger.  1) The meat - it great quality, perfectly seasoned and then seared on their smoking hot grill.  They also do a great job cooking to the correct temperature - I'm a loyal medium-rare burger fan and hate when its overcooked.  2) The bun - It has to be a soft bun as to not squish everything out, yet a slight toast to it.  3) The toppings - I'm a blue cheese and bacon burger fanatic and the quality of both here is excellent. 4) The fries - Can't forget the fries!!  They are the thinner version and cooked to a perfect crunchy perfection.

It's also a cute atmosphere and a very casual and cozy place to drop in for a quick meal.  If you love burgers done well, you'll love this place.

* Decent turkey burger
* Free parking at the Safeway across the street
* Crispy fries
* Rich and creamy chocolate milkshake

Note to people at Burgermeister: If the turkey burger automatically comes on a whole wheat bun, it should say so on the menu. Most would think the default bun would be the sesame seed bun, which my boyfriend got on his burger without specifying. That's what I expected, too, but it wasn't what I got. Just sayin is all.

I admit this is a long over due review but, I gotta a catch up here.
You see for some reason a relationship only works for me if there is food and that being said I had to have a hamburger and my boy toy took me to ess eff and I knew where I wanted to be Burgermeister.

If solely because of the chedder and fries and the scents of meat being grilled to a perfect hue of pink and grey and the buns toasted and the atmosphere of homelessness just outside but then all you see is your burger being made with pickles and mustard and cheese and more cheese and hot fries and a cool drink ...

The only thing stopping me from proposing marriage to the cook is that my boy toy was buying otherwise that cook and me would be invested in making something else besides burgers....oh yeah...

I've gone here three or four times and my burger was dry every time.  I can think of a dozen other places I'd rather eat within the same food group.... yes I said 'food group.'

It's really not a good option.  I'd rather grab a burger at In 'n Out down the Warf or at Bar Johnny's on Polk or opt for the Indian place at Kennedy's down the street.

I suppose if I was standing outside the place and had to eat a burger within 5 minutes without the cash or capacity to drive somewhere I'd give it another shot.

In a city of foodies you really can't excuse a flagship product this mediocre.

If you love garlic, get garlic fries here.  If you get a to go order people can smell the garlic from your box more that four feet from you.  Not just a slight scent, either.  If you walk four feet behind someone with an order of Burgermeister garlic fries it smells like you have a clove of fresh cut garlic up to your nose. Mmmm.  I love garlic.

The burgers are awesome.  Good thickness, have that flame broiled taste, and comes with all the fixin's on the side so if you are super picky there is no worry about the wrong things going on it.

They have fantastic people who work there and it always smells like enticing burgers when you walk by.

It's pretty expensive for a burger and fries, and they only take cash, but it's worth the flavor.

If a burger place can be judged by the number of napkins I needed to get me through my meal, then this place gets 6 stars (napkins?).  Whoa, juicy, goodness.

This place gets 4 stars because they are a "standard" burger joint that serves Nieman Ranch meat (read:  hormone-free, happy cows.  We like happy cows. Happy cows make happy people).  Their turkey burgers were not proclaimed happy, so I did not eat one.

The place was clean, the service was quick, parking was easy, they serve beer, our waitress told me & my boyfriend that we're charming, and all that put together equals:  BurgerMeister, we're charmed, and will be back.

Burgermeister just didn't do it for me. I wanted to like them for a pretty decent meal deal in which you get a burger, fries and a soda for $7 but it was underwhelming.

It wasn't bad by any means but I could have got a better burger at In-n-out for $4 or for $10 an amazing burger at a couple of places near my house (Street, Bar Johnny etc.

I would say it's average. Location is convenient off a MUNI exit.

Decent place to soak up all the alcohol in your system after happy hour at Orbit Room or Pisco Lounge. The basic 1/2 pound beef burger ($9) comes with a choice of salad or regular fries. Your costs will start to increase significantly with all the upgrades and add-ons (cheese, bacon, curly fries, etc.).  You can get out of here for ten bucks if you order just a plain burger and have water with your sandwich.

Last night's burger was not one of the better ones I've had here. The bun was soggy before the burger made it over to me. They should have grilled the bun to handle all the juices.

Love the philly chicken and cheese, western burger, california burger, etc., always with curly fries.  Very solid menu.

Always characters at this location, and my meal usually includes some form of entertainment.

On food alone...I'd give this place 4 stars.  However the fact that for 2 people, a philly chicken sandwich, drink, and curly fries nearly costs $40, minus a star.  This place has earned the nickname "really expensive burger place".  But every now and then I'm willing to shell it out.

It's a decent place to eat in or do take out. Is functional, service is good and the food is OK. Cleanliness, ambience and location... eh.

1. The menu is the same as the BM in Cole Valley... so are the prices. :)

2. If I'm in the hood and am in the mood to eat burger meat, and don't feel like waiting for the the N Judah a.k.a. the Never-Never Coming Judah, then I hit this place up.

3. The food here just seems a bit... limp? Have comes across fries that have been kind of soggy, the burger bun just seems to fall apart leaving me wondering if the lower part of my face is paralyzed and do I have drool pouring out the corner of my lips.. ish sthat sho? Milks shakes are decent. Food has been hit or miss for me.

4. Don't get me wrong, its a good place to eat. But if you've been a frequent eater at the BM in Cole Valley, you'll find it difficult to adjust to this one in terms of taste and location.

5. Watch out walking out that you don't trip over some of the sidewalk squatters  lest you want burger over your chest and milk shake on your face.

6. They don't take cash (like all other BMs), so bring cash with you or be willing to withdraw at the ATM inside but it charges you $2 for the withdrawal.

7. The fact that its lower than street level can make the air a bit oppressive inside... sort of like when you were in the Transfer... air gets heavier the further back you go in.

All in all, I'm still a fan of the BM in Cole Valley but don't mind stopping by here if I am in the vicinity and the gods of hunger are stampeding in my stomach.

A guy walks in to Burgermeister.  Her orders the Western with onion rings.  The register monkey says "That'll be $17.50."  Exsqueeze me?  "Uhhh... I don't have $17.50."  "We have an ATM."  "Uhh... I'm not about to pay $17.50 for a burger and onion rings."

So first the Banana burger disappeared from the menu.  And now, I don't even see the specialty burgers on the menu.  Price is through the F'n roof, the kick @$$ burgers are... what... hidden?  I don't know.

I hope whatever virus this place got has not infected the other Burgermesiters... it would make baby jesus weep.  :(

Bar planning meeting at the 500 Club, followed by a brief bender at Bender's preceding an Eagles of Death Metal concert only to continue my bender at Bender's then party with Beauty Bar hipsters I meet outside of Bender's till the wee hours of the morning,  wake up before noon get busy, get to my scheduled Speakeasy Brewery tour all on an empty stomach.  Hamburger, no Cheeseburger, no, no, Bacon Cheeseburger - my mind was consumed, it was all I could think about all I wanted. Just the mere thought of pure crispy baconny, beefy, cheesy goodness hitting my lips was giving me little mouth orgasms.

Where oh where do we go?  "Burgermiester" my friends say.  "Oh, OK, are they good?" I say. "Yes, the best".  Wah, wah, waah.  What a let down. First of all $14 for a bacon cheeseburger and fries?  Really, OK then, it better be the best damn bacon cheeseburger I've ever eaten.  But no, no, no, no, no, no ,no, it was barely mediocre. I felt robbed, in so many ways.  It was dry, bland, and it only came with two pathetic pieces of wimpy limpy bacon in a X formation.  The fries were dry too, how do you mess up fries?  The only good thing I have to say about this place is that there's a huge tub of free flowing mayo, but that's not gonna get me back here.  So now I'm out $14 and still craving a good burger, guess I'll have to wait for Tuesdays at Rosamunde for a good burger, they might not have bacon but I think I can I mange without it.

I'm not even going to lie: I go here often. It's basically my go-to burger joint.  I think that is both because I don't know any better and because I like the hood it's in.

What's so good?
Their burgers are cooked just how you like them and there is a vast array of toppings/sauces- that is all

BAD:
-French fries are comparable to burger king's.  This is fine if you cost as much as BK.
-Speaking of cost, it's friggin expensive
-My friend recently ate a grilled chicken sandwich and vomited shortly after (no he wasn't intoxicated) and still has a tummy ache.  YES it was from you MEISTER.

They do some damn fine work with burgers here. Damn fine. The burgers here are massive and they've got some great speciality items. They actually have an amazing take on Carl Jr's western burger. I went in there hungry one night and ended up entering a food coma after ordering a double burger, buffalo wings, chili fries and a milk shake. I think I'm still digesting that meal. I may have been near death but it was worth it, no doubt.

My only reason for not hitting these guys with a fifth star are the prices. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for but, be ready to spend some cash to get a burger, fries and a drink here. You'll be stuffed but it'll cost you. I will admit, if you're jonesing for a real good cheeseburger, it'll be worth it, for sure.

I'm a burger snob, and by calling themselves 'BurgerMeister' they are basically proclaiming to the world that they are masters of the hamburger. This is clever, because you can't get sued for false advertising when its just your name.

I have tried three burgers and every time I wonder what the fuss is about. The place smells great from outside, and the food looks good, but in the end you just paid out the arse for a mediocre to good burger. Nothing masterly about it. I tried the cheesesteak once too. That didn't work out so hot. This was additionally frustrating to me since Metro Caffe is two blocks away and has a pretty legit philly.

To be honest I wouldn't go back on my own, but if a friend really just had to have BurgerMeister because they are "ZOMG super rofl awesome", I would try to convince them otherwise and then grudgingly join them while trying to convince them to buy my meal.

We walked into the taqueria next door and walked right back out. After a day of being frequented by Pride Celebration merrymakers, the 4.5 Yelp stars meant nothing. The spot smelled liked:

a) a dirty swimming pool locker room gone sour,
b) sweaty, unshaven armpits,
c) Cholula [http://www.cholula.com/] - according to our companion from Albuquerque.

We walked into Burgermeister. We tilted our heads back, and we sniffed. Beef. Beef. Beef. Thank goodness!

The bacon dog half consumed earlier at the Pride Celebration was still sitting in my stomach, so I only ordered curly fries [Nice kick to them. Ask for Ranch!] and a shake [strawberry]. Portions are generous, even on those items. I tried many times to pawn off the curly fries to my friends who were already struggling with their orders. The $5+ shake was delicious, and it was really the size of 2.25 shakes. No complaints! The burgers my friends had ordered [1 each] were size-of-your-face-HUGE.

Don't get thrown off by the prices. You're getting fresh ingredients, happy Niman Ranch cows, and enough food to feed a Lego village. They don't have Garden or turkey burgers, but for the veggie types who can stand the smell of beef [or at least prefer it over the other smells mentioned], they do have portabello and boca burgers.

Cash only! And how convenient, there is an ATM sitting right inside!

I'd had a craving for a burger for the past few days.  Situations including friend visits, a lost wallet, and sheer unbridled laziness all prevented me from reaching my goal of putting a burger in my stomach.  Well that changed today, on attempt #2 to reach Burgermeister.  Why did I choose this place?  I wanted to go for something new, and this place conveniently fit that criteria.

So i got there, ordered me a cheeseburger, curly seasoned fries, and a beer, paid a million dollars for the food, then waited to take that first "mission accomplished" bite.  Well then I did, and the burger was....(this is oh-so climatic).....the burger was eh.   Yeah, kinda disappointing . It wasn't bad, it just wasn't...well, four star worthy.  In other news, the fries were a tasty bunch, and the Hefeweizen beer, well that didn't let me down.

This Burgermeister was a fairly clean establishment, decent interior, and a few tables.  And now for two complaints: this place doesn't take cash (seriously restaurants, get with it, deal with the fees) and their bathroom requires a key.  Just minor annoyances.  But this is Yelp, and by golly, I sure am gonna bitch about em.

The food wasn't bad...it really was "a okay", but kinda expensive for such an impression, and while I may return, I'd head to Burger Joint, among others, first.

Quality beef burgers and alternatives. They also started offering breakfast foods which I haven't tried yet. I do have to say that their chili burger with the chili on the side with curly fries is to die for. A bit pricey and they only take cash, but actually worth it. They are quickly made and extremely tasty! I personally like this place better than The Counter in Palo Alto.

They also have VERY tasty milkshakes. Nothing too creative, only the normal flavors (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla). It's thick creamy.... with the consistency of slightly melted ice cream.

Please note: I will be coming back again and the fourth star is for the service.

I think I was in an off-mood when I went last night. I hadn't eaten since noon and it was around 9pm, having just finished my work load at Starbuck's for the night in the Safeway lot and hungry Choco-ken waiting at home for me to feed and liberate his bladder.

The cashier, an awesome geek who kept me entertained and made sure I had everything perfectly as I wanted. He even figured out that my name spells "atila" backwards, in less than a minute. The second fastest person to figure that out, after my guy's mom! :) Ah smart people and History Channel buffs - they always bring a smile to my face.

My burger was super rare, as I wanted, but I think the grilled onions ruined it for me. The combination just didn't work, so next time, no grilled onions for me! Plus I haven't been able to eat as much lately, so it's probably all mental. I'm coming back just for the awesome cashier alone!

I have long been awaiting to have happy hour at this Burgermeister.  Like everyone says, it is Expensive!  But during happy hour which is Monday through Friday 4-7 you can get any of their beers on tap for $2.75 that includes, Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, Prohibition, Sierra Nevada and a few more.  But that's a pretty good deal plus they have a happy hour menu, which includes on Monday's $6 for the appetizer platter but this ends at 6 pm.  So I got no food and ate off my friends amazing curly chili cheese fries and big avocado and onion ring burger or that's what it looked like.  So I was fine!

Like said, there is an ATM, but when I checked my bill today, I got charged $2 by the machine and then again another $2 by Bank of America and normally I find them to be a great bank but that pissed me off.

But I will be back to  Burgermeister in the near future for more happy hour fun.  And I also discovered my love for Cholula and ketchup which was worth the trip itself!

So I get stabby when I am hungry, so my friends fearing for their lives dragged me in for a snack before dinner.  The snacks were chili cheese fries, garlic fries and onions rings.  The garlic fries were tasty and so were the onion rings.  The chili cheese fries made me not want to head to dinner but to order another round for me.
