Review Highlights
Wife: loved her sourdough burger, and was thrilled by the fried mushrooms. I don't get it, either.
Baby: mixed review; liked dipping items into the ketchup but didn't eat the basket or burger. Sampled some french fries and avocado, but no true winners.
Me: over done burger (medium means soft exterior, warm middle!), and blah everything else. No true complaints, just not all that inspired.
Maybe I'll visit Burger Mediocrity some other time?
This review is *ONLY* for the fried zucchini!
Living in So Cal for a year and a half I discovered fried zucchini. Scrumptious strips on zucchini fried in a batter that was oh so yummy. I could get my fix many places and since it has been awhile I found myself craving it again so I turned to Yelp and did a search.
Burger Madness popped up and seeing that it was right next to Costco I was sold since I had to go there anyway. I wasn't hungry enough to get a burger - or honestly even the zucchini but I was right there so I had to try it!
It was basically alright. The batter was a good flavor but seemed to fall off more easily than the batter I am used to and apparently prefer.
The staff was working was very friendly and I was told they make their own Jack Daniels sauce where you can actually taste the Jack. Nice.
Next time I go I will try a burger and probably even get the zucchini again, even though I prefer it a bit crunchier.
I don't hang out in SoDo regularly, but maybe I should because this place is fantastic. Easily one of the better burger joints in the greater Seattle area, any passerby should not be deceived by the somewhat dull strip mall appearance on the outside.
The variety of burgers are very creative, original and downright tasty. I had the Uncle Bob (a ridiculous burger served with chili, cheese, a fork and plenty of napkins). It was worth every antacid I had to take to finish the thing. Heaven. The fries, although not homemade, are enormously large portioned. You can easily feed two or three people with one side.
Next time, I'm trying the milkshake. But I have to remember to wear my iron stomach and steel jaws to finish the meals here.
Tried Burger Madness due to great reviews here. Very disappointed. At First I thought i accidently wondered into a Jamba Juice because the place was painted up in smoothie pastels. But who cares about that, what I care about is quality and price. Lets go to price first: total meal was $12.80. I chose the Combo #1 (Burger, Fries, Shake). pretty pricey for a burger combo...but whatever, it'd be worth it if it was as good as my fellow Yelpers claim. It wasn't. Shake was soupy & watery, burger (So Cal burger) was okay, nothing special, fries were crinkle cut store bought.
I left the Madness thinking I was $12.80 poorer. Not, "wow what a great burger".
Stopped by with a coworker for lunch and we were really impressed! It looks unassuming in its location behind Costco on 4th Ave, but it's worth checking out. The variety of burgers they offer are what you'd find on a Red Robin's menu, so not really comparable to Lunchbox Laboratory. I got the Fun-Guy burger (swiss and mushrooms - get it??) and it was cooked perfectly and so flavorful! Price was decent although I didn't get the fries and shake combo.
We can't wait to bring more coworkers to try the other burgers. It's nice to have this non-fast food addition in the area!
Nearly as good as Red Mill Burger and definitely better (and cheaper) than Lunchbox Laboratory.
Burger Madness is located in back of Costco in that newish micro-mini strip mall. From the exterior, it appears to be a sports bar with beer neon signs in the window. And yes indeed, there are four different beers on tap here.
Inside are two community tables and a snack bar along the window. The only other customers beside me were a Sound Transit cop and a King County Sheriff's Dept deputy.
A huge menu hangs above the order counter. Probably ten different burgers. Several fish options, including clams. Three different salads. And a kid's menu (so no, this is not a sports bar).
A very friendly and smiling boy took my order for a So-Cal burger and chocolate shake. The hamburger was good with avocado, tomato, crispy bacon and a light yellow-tinted dressing. If the sandwich had not had so much salt, it would have been very good. But still, it was not nearly as salty as one of those creatures that Lunchbox Lab churns out. I'm just teasing LL now!
My chocolate shake was super thick, eliciting a brain freeze in only a matter of moments. The shake had a nice marbled appearance and tasted pretty good, but did have a bit of artificial flavor and slick texture.
One curiosity: they had a Rock Star cooler on the counter. On top of the cooler were four empty Jack Daniels bottles. I wonder why, they don't server liquor here. I can't believe I used to drink that J.D. rotgut back in the last century.
Speaking of Rock Star energy drinks, I just found out today that right-wing-nut talk show host Michael Savage was one of the founders of Rock Star. Knowing that, I will never drink the stuff. The Brits have it right when they announced this week that Savage is persona non grata in England.
This place = damn good.
I've visited the location and had nothing but great servie and good food to boot. Went there with a large group of people for a 10-Stacker challenge (see the pic) were one of my friends was the first to complete the 2.5lb pile of beef and cheese in under 30 mintues. The prize? T-shirt, pic on the wall, $20 gift certificate, and plenty of time on the porcelain toilet later on. No... not because the burger wasn't delicious, just that having too much burger can be bad for your bowels.
On another note: yes - the fries aren't particularily fantastic. I like me some seasoned, fresh cut fries that don't taste like they fell out of a bag.
"The Madness" as I've dubbed this place..Oooohh Yeahh! Once you eat one of their juicy, dripping, messy, pieces of heaven you will be back..I'm a regular now..I'd say best burger I've had in Seattle...
reserving 5 stars only because its a burger joint and the wait can be long for lunch and they need better ventilation...a litle smokey like if you've ever tried to BBQ in a garage on a rainy day...you will smell like a burger for the rest of the day if you eat in...but clean and friendly service.
A 4 from me means: I think it's good and would come back without anyone twisting my arm.
I didn't actually go into this place; my sister bought it and brought it back home to eat, so I can't say much about the place, but I do have some things to say about the burgers.
I ordered the all american burger (with avocados). It was nicely cooked with a smokey charcoal flavor to it (which I love). No complaints about the burger. The fries, however, I have some beef with (no pun intended). The regular fries were crinkle cut and tasted like those frozen fries that I got back when I was in grade school. The dipping sauce (a combo of thousand island and ranch) was good though...it covered up some of the frozen-fries-taste.
Other family members got shakes. They were made with real ice cream, were very rich, and VERY GOOD.
I always meet a friend here for lunch when I'm in the area. The burgers are awesome! I get a different burger each time I go. I have no favorite burger yet because they all have been good so far. Try the "Jack Daniels". Damn, it tastes like you're taking a shot of J.D. with every bite. The "So Cal" is great too. They're all great. The thing to keep in mind is their advertised burger weight is after cooking. If it's 1/3 of a pound you're going to get 1/3 of a pound.
We recently had a Subaru meet at Burger Madness and it was a hit. It was such a hit we plan to do a regular meet here. I heard from several people say it was the best burger they've had. During this visit I'm proud to say my buddy Jake was the first one ever to finish their 10 stack challenge.
Not only are the burgers good my wife and dad got the clams and chips. The clams were big, no dinky minced clams here.
I don't know what all the bad reviews are about. People who give a bad review of the burgers at Burger Madness must have lived on Micky D burgers their whole life and don't know what a good burger is if it hit them in the face. If the place was bad I wouldn't keep going here. The other good thing is they have beer on tap, good burgers and cold beer FTW. Trust me, if a crowd full of Subie owners were happy with the burgers then that says it all. For all you people that go out to eat in your business suits, eat over your plate. I was lucky enough to be wearing jeans that last time I ate here.
Disclaimer - I know one of the guys who opened both of the Burger Madness places, he used to run the Deli next door and told me long before I stopped eating red meat that he was going to open this place. I promised him that I would try it when they opened and review it.
So, today I ate a burger. A promise is a promise.
I will start with the things I didn't love:
1) the fries
Hmm. Okay, I suppose that is it. Pre-fab frozen fries lacking the amazing seasonings that Jae would thrown on the fries he made at the deli.
As for the burger, I went with the All American with cheese. You know, I've been to Red Mill and though the burger was tasty, I was still never inspired to review it....
The patty was a smidge dry, but I kind of prefer it that way - I like my burger to stay in one piece and hate wiping juice from my hands, especially considering I ate this bad boy at my desk. Other than that - TAAAASTY. I don't know what kind of seasonings they throw in their beef, but goodness it was flavorful. Good beef too. Fresh.
Toppings are also FRESH. The fried zucchini? YES PLEASE, I don't typically like zucchini but I tossed that down my gullet with no hesitation or anything to dip it in.
Word is that they are working on getting a liquor license to help increase the business in the evening. When that happens, I will promptly march back to try the fish and chips. No question.
Only thing that saved your ass and got you two stars was that awfully tasty hit-the-spot draught that you have on tap.
But, for a place called burger madness...that really shouldn't be your saving grace. I could cook a better burger than that, and I suck.
I give it 4 stars because I'd say it's better than average.
Food: Tried the Madness burger, pretty good. Cheese was melted, sauce was satisfying and the meat is definitely a quality cut (not the best ever, but good). The french fries aren't really anything to brag about, could use some improvement. French fry sauce is good, and not easily found in Seattle. They also offer a good selection of beers.
Service: The greeter was nice. Waited patiently while I reviewed the menu. Although the burger did take a while to get to me, and it was pretty quiet as I came at 1:30. I guess if they're really making from scratch that explains some, but they could stand to have a little faster turnaround time.
Environment: Very good. Clean, comfortable, fun. No complaints here.
Overall: A better than average place with good pricing. It's not gourmet, and a little under Red Mill, but the line isn't as bad and they take PLASTIC. Would be a great stop before a Mariner or Seahawk game.
The good news is that you won't get E Coli from the burger patties at Burger Madness, the bad news is that those patties won't have any flavor or juiciness that are prerequisites for a great burger. This place is close to work for me and I like the idea of it, but poor execution makes it a major disappointment. I have officially given up on them and will spend my hard earned dollars else where. Service can be frustratingly slow.
Located a few hundred feet North of Costco on 4th (in SODO), this burger shop caught my eye on my way to do some mass-shopping at the Cost. My wife and I walked the two minutes to it afterwards, and we were not disappointed.
Really clean, pleasantly peppered beef, wavy fries that were not oversalted nor mushy with oil, and a nice, contemporary decor. I had the Bleu Burger, with Blue Cheese smothering sauteed onions and mushrooms on a burger topped with bacon and surrounded by a sourdough bun. Really, really tasty! And grilled, on a real grill, right in the back. No hot plate or heat lamp here! My wife had the cowboy burger, which I did not sample, but she enjoyed.
The staff is friendly, and the menu is extensive, although the location is a little out of the way for me. Still, with ample parking at the lot in front and located on a relatively main road, I think I'll be stopping here the next time I crave a great burger in a hurry.
Poor Seattle. You think this is a 5-star burger? I'm not even comparing this to a gourmet burger, but a very similar company called Five Guys Burgers in the mid-Atlantic area. Those are 5-star burgers. Fresh and juicy. Made-to-order. Beautiful, gourmet toppings (as many as you please for no extra cost). And the most delicious ground beef in a sub-$10 patty you've ever had. Plus the fries...my god...the fries. Hand cut in the restaurant and deep fried in peanut oil. Nothing like 'em. All of that for less than you pay at Burger Madness.
Ok, enough nostalgia. You're probably wondering what it is about Burger Madness that warrants a slim 2 stars. Well, I ordered the So-Cal Burger. The description claims melted cheese. My cheese was not melted. In fact, the entire sandwich seemed like it was slapped together on a pre-cooked, lukewarm piece of meat (i.e., grill/meat/cheese never partied together). The meat was just ok. It was over-cooked, under-seasoned, and not nearly as flavorful as I expected from the reviews. Want a great burger in Seattle in this price range? Head over to Red Mill. Want the best burger in this price range? Fly to the mid-Atlantic and go to Five Guys.
Burger Madness will do just fine in it's next-to-Costco location, just set your expectations appropriately.
Walking in I could tell people were kind of ticked off. It was around 12:30, so it was busy but not packed & there were many people sitting, sans burgers, waiting...
I ordered the "fire alarm" (jalapenos, jalapeno jack cheese & spicy sauce). No fries or sides, tho the list was tempting. I knew I couldn't eat anything more than the burger itself.
1st warning was when they called #41 and I was #51. This could be a long wait...and it was...nearly 10 minutes.
During my wait a woman quietly called for #51, but not to deliver the burger. To let me know that they were out of "spicy sauce" & I just said that was fine, make it without.
So the burger was over-done in my opinion. They do say they will make it "medium" unless otherwise specified. It seemed a bit more charred than medium. And there was definitely no "fire alarm" flavor. There were 2 small slices of jalapeno, which I could barely find on the burger, much less taste. Also as another reviewer had noted, the cheese wasn't even melted (and I'm not even convinced it was jalapeno jack as advertised - tasted like a plain monterey jack to me). It had obviously just been put on after the burger came off the grill, along with the lettuce, tomato, onion & pickles.
The burger was fine, certainly better than McDonalds or Burger King - but I had higher expectations. If I go back, I might just try a shake or smoothie next time & skip the burger. I don't eat burgers much, so I want them to be REALLY good when I do.
To those who think these burgers are one of the best burgers they have tasted - I recommend you try Zak's or Red Mill...those are the real thing!
Was OK, not the best. Have been there 3 times now, the variety of burgers is impressive. But with each visit, I am slightly disappointed, there seems to be a lack of seasoning or something lacking in the burgers. The fries are average, the onion rings seem to have a beer batter coating, which were too greasy. Banana shake was too sweet. Not sure if there will be a 4th visit - will visit Zak's instead.
Quite honestly, the best burger I've had in Seattle. They use Angus Beef not just a ground beef patty and the taste is just great.
I got the classic without cheese, and it was amazing. It was well done and I didn't think it was going to be moist at all, but it was amazing! Great burger and low prices compared to the burger, I enjoyed it greatly.
I had a craving for a burger today for lunch. Unfortunately, I stopped at Burger Madness. I decided to go with a classic, the 1/3 lb "All American" burger. What better to judge how good a burger is? Not good. I knew I was in for some trouble when I noticed the "chef" pressing down on the patty with a weight. Why, why, why would someone press all of the juice out a burger patty? What I ended up getting was a charred (burnt really) burger that had no juice whatsoever and worse yet, no TASTE! The iceberg lettuce had more flavor than the beef. Honest, I would have been better to go up the street to McDonald's than eat that hockey puck of a patty.
Fries were OK, especially with the "mystery sauce" and they give you a large portion but that $7.50 I paid for the combo was completely wasted because of the burger. Oh, and who puts the pickle, lettuce and tomato on the bottom bun then the patty on top of that? WTF!
I was told this was the best burger ever, but was not that impressed. I had the bacon cheese burger with all the trimmings, but still it was an ok burger, I'm not rushing back to go get another one. I should have considered my source in regards to Burger Madness having the best burgers ever. The combo meal is around $10 for a burger, fries and a soda, I could have saved $5 by going to McDonalds, at least they are over a billion sold!
That was a big juicy burger....
After driving by on the way to Costco, I stopped in to see what they were all about. Looked like the usual burger menu with house twists to the ingredients. I had the signature madness! burger and doubled it up. Boy was I in for surprise...that was one massive burger dripping with oil and cheesy goodness. The Madness burger is a angus beef patty with a cheese center with onion, lettuce and tomatoes on top. The double gave me two 1/3 lb patties. I took it to go and before I could sit down to eat it, the grease and cheese has oozed out of the box and almost soaked the bag. The service was friendly and they cook to order so it took a few minutes. There were two things that kept me from giving them 5 stars like everyone else: first, this burger cost me $7.50 after tax and second, since I had time to watch them cook the burger, since they have an open kitchen, the cook put on raw burgers on the grill and then when plating the cooked one, touched the patty with the same gloves. Otherwise, the burger was good quality and the quantity was above average like the price. I may go back to see if they can do better. Oh and right now, the grand opening special is you get a free smoothie with a purchase of a combo.
I love this place, they have really creative burgers and they always taste great. The toppings are always super fresh and the onions are amazing. I like that you can order online as well. One thing I will say though is don't order the garlic fries. I love garlic but the fries were just ridiculously overpowering and had way too much garlic. My favorite would probably be the Madness burger, who doesn't love a burger stuffed with gooey cheese and onions?
I'm loving this place and have been back a dozen times since finding it. The other reviews make it pretty clear this isn't the place if you want a rare burger, but if you like them well done, it is as good as it gets in Seattle. This town sucks for burgers, but Burger Madness is good and cheap.
a couple of weekends ago a group of us AE86ers decided to have a little meet and eat. somebody suggested this place but nobody else had ever heard of it before. man, were we in for a nice little treat! i love finding new awesome burger joints. it was a saturday afternoon and there was a steady stream of customers here. i guess they have accomadated other car meets before even tho this place is mad tiny! the guy there said that if we wanna meet there again in the future, just give him a heads up and he'd set tables and such outside for us too. that's hella cool of him. on to the food: burgers were season perfectly - no bland, tasteless patties here! i guess they actually marinate their patties? that's what it said on their menu. anyways, i had the bacon sourdough but my pal had the *gulp* double calorie buster. he's an iraq war vet that actually just got back into town a month before so he's certainly been craving some good ol' U S and A hamburgers. damn his metabolism! i just gained 3lbs just typing this review up. this place delivered on the burgers but the fries were only ok. i had an order of shrooms too and those were tasty but next time i'm gonna try the rings. all of us can't wait to come back again.
The BEST burger joint in town. I love the fact that they hand make their patties with 100% angus beef, and it is flavorful. Most burger joints these days cook pre-made patties, and you can tell by their perfect shape and no flavor, which they try to mask with sauce. This place is different, patties are as if you made them at home, and they do not skimp either as they are 1/3 lb burgers, and they load up on fries too. I always walk away satisfied and full. Try their fish and chips as their breading is very good.
