I am in love with this place!

My first experience at Burdicks was during the holiday season.  Maybe it was the snow, maybe it was the chocolate mice, maybe it was the breathtaking decor, but the entire store seemed magical.  We purchased a handful of chocolates from the retail shop.  Chocolate combinations that I never dreamed of, but were so incredibly decadent.  We had chocolates with early grey tea, cardamom, pink peppercorns, and sea salt.  We even had tiny chocolate penguins and mice.  We savored each morsel, not wanting it to end!  I must add he bag of chocolates (which given the fact that they are handcrafted, delicious, decadent and packaged so lovely!) was very reasonably priced!!!!

We then went to the restaurant/cafe side and ordered beverages.  My boyfriend ordered the richest, delicious mocha.  It was made with Burdicks chocolate, which is out of this world.  I ordered a honey-ginger-lemon concoction which I dream about to this day!  I've even tried replicating the recipe at home, to no avail.

We also tried the petite french macaroons, which are everything a macaroon should be!  I tried pistachio and lavender.  These are just as melt-in-your-mouth-delicious as the chocolates!

We have visited the Burdicks  in Cambridge, which is much closer to our home in Providence.  While I enjoy everything they have to offer, the MA store seems to lack the magic that the NH seems to have.

I dream of Burdick's, and have considered driving to the 3 hours just to get lost in the atmosphere with macaroons and hot chocolate!

I grew up on Old Walpole Road.   Our house was located in Keene at the start of Old Walpole Road. As you would expect Old Walpole Road is the road they once took to Walpole village.  Well I never knew growing up that Burdick's chocolates would fast become my favorite chocolate.  I would have been making the trip up Old Walpole Road weekly to get my fix.

I have to admit these are my favorite chocolates on the East Coast.  Read some of my previous reviews and you will know my favorite on the West Coast.

Walpole is a quaint New England town where all the buildings around the town square are painted white and quite grand.  Burdick's chocolates can be found in the town square on Main Street.

Walking into the shop you just know you are going to love it.  They allow you to taste just about everything (so it seemed).  There were sample trays everywhere you turned.  I was that "kid in a candy store".

the Healthy Bar Set is worth checking out.  Order it via mail you won't regret it.  Or if you find yourself in New England some fall day then be sure to stop in and stock up but please email me so I can put my order in as well.

My mouth is watering all over my keyboard right now!

Burdick's was one of the places I fell in love with when I first moved to Cambridge, so imagine my sheer delight when I discovered two years ago that they had a restaurant in Walpole.  Since that joyous moment, the bf and I have made the 45-minute drive from his residence Hanover several times to eat there.  It's totally worth it, even the frustration of getting lost every time we get close to the restaurant.  Seriously, we get lost every time at exactly the same place.  I don't know if we're just stupid or if the roads simply suck up there.

The restaurant, which adjoins the chocolate shop, is small and quaint.  It's the kind of cozy wooden restaurant I picture when I think of New England.  This past weekend, they had their Christmas decorations up which added even more to the charm.  It's a great place to go for all occasions: first dates, anniversaries, birthdays, or even when you've rolled out of bed at noon the day after Thanksgiving and thought you hadn't stuffed your face enough the night before (don't judge).

Foodwise, their menu items are supposed to be French-inspired.  I'm always a fan of their cheese plates, and the duck confit appetizer is solid.  The roasted chicken is great comfort food, and on chilly winter days nothing beats a bowl of their beef stew topped with a big dollop of mashed potatoes.

The last time I was here for dinner, which was over a year ago, they had an amazing dessert menu that consisted of things like white nectarines embedded in chocolate mousse.  But when we went for lunch a couple of days ago, their dessert menu consisted only of the baked goods they have in their Harvard Square chocolate shop.  I was beyond disappointed.  Hopefully it's just a lunchtime thing.  If they've done away with the special dessert menu, I WILL cry.

Footnote: The chocolate shop has many plates of samples for those who are fond of gorging on sweets, like me.  I shamelessly tried everything, then went back for more.  They put out the good stuff straight from the display cases, and the pieces are pretty big, if not whole.  I was fortunate enough to nab a chocolate mouse head.  Wish I'd had the rest of the mouse as well, but beggars can't be choosers.

The flagship shop of the L.A. Burdick Chocolate. I know it from the one in Cambridge, MA, and went to this one with my boyfriend on the way back from Montreal.

Come get the chocolate at a much better price if you visit around Valentine's or Christmas, which are the peak chocolate sales seasons - they have "imperfect" ones (still looks great) for sale!

I think it's fair to say that I am obsessed with Burdick's Chocolates.  I say this because this is what happened on Friday when I got home from work and there was a Burdick package in the carport:

Husband:  Oooh it's a Burdick box.
me:  WHAT?!  Burdick CHOCOLATE?!!!!  YES!!!  wait - maybe it's just a box...
    (stared woefully at box)
Husband:  I doubt it, no one would do that to you.
me:  YAY CHOCOLATE!  oh my god!  maybe it's crispy eggs for Easter!  maybe it's macarons!  maybe it's a box of caramels!!!!!
Husband:  Why don't you open it
(I violently tear open the box - still not even in the house yet)
me:  AAAAAA!!!!!  Crispy eggs!!!!  MOM I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!
(I start shoving dark chocolate egg in my face)
me - on phone to mother - mouth full:  ahnks or a ocholates.  ooo ah est udder e-er
mom (lying):  hi honey, why don't you call me back after you eat all the chocolate, I can't understand a word you're saying.

I've been buying these chocolates for myself and for others for years - they are absolutely heavenly.  My friends tell me stories similar to what I have decribed above when I have sent them chocolates from here.

I go to this shop whenever I am in the area - admittedly not that often, but if at all possible I will detour to be able to make it to Burdick.  The shop is small and sweet, in this super cute little town in NH.  Don't be fooled by their small town location though - they're total badasses when it comes to chocolate, and I've never found their equal.

This place is for the serious chocolate connoiseur.  Its flavours go to the unusual, definitely gourmet.  Pricey, but of the highest quality.  Worth checking out while visiting the area as the towncenter is wonderfully preserved in the old new england style.  Some of the Hollywood elite have been known to sneak in for a fix.  There is a restaurant here, too.  I've never gotten beyond my chocolate fixation to try it. LOL

Best value in high end chocolates.  I frequently order gifts from here and I always get rave reviews from the recipients.  I used to go to the cafe in Cambridge and I loved the hot chocolate and glacee they sell there.  If you're looking to impress they really do have the best chocolate assortments.  They're much more affordable than some of the other places I've gotten chocolates from maison du chocolat and cocoa bella.

A friend sent me sampler box from this place as an office warming gift just two days ago. Wow! The package was beautiful. A ribbon tied, embossed wax seal, wooden box with the most beautiful truffles inside. They even have these little chocolate mice with tails. But looks are only couverture (covering) deep. I have had other good to great truffles -- Schmidt, Rechiutti , and Fran's. But for freshness and unique flavors, Mr. Burdick's are probably the best. My local chocolatier is exceptional, but he only does eight flavors. So it is quite a treat to have an outstanding Earl Gray truffle (better than Fran's) or a Provencal-inspired one (lavender and honey - I think). The truffles were all beautiful. They are a little less sweet than standard so the flavors really come through. What lucky devil out there is going to get my L.A. Burdick delivery? Maybe me... I should not surprise me that they are so good as the people who sent these to me used to make chocolate professionally.
