Review from Mindy L.
I love Burdick's. It might be because I love chocolate. And pastries. And cheese. And more chocolate.
A family friend has been recommending that we try Burdick's forever. We finally made our way out there during a weekend visit. We got to the restaurant on Sunday just before their brunch was scheduled to end. They were so kind, however, and said that we could order soups, salads and appetizers from the menu. My sister and I couldn't say no the pate platter. My mother ordered the cheese plate and my Dad ordered a chocolate pastry and the mushroom soup (weird combo, but if you know him, it makes sense). The pate was incredible...the cheese (what I would eat of it anyway) was delicious. We were able to enjoy one of the funniest moments I've ever seen when my Dad attempted to eat one particularly smelly cheese and before it even made it past his lips he squealed, "It smells like nasty gym socks" and tossed it back on the table. He then proceeded to drain his mug of tea and demand that someone give him gum to get the "stench out of his nose." :-) Not all cheese is for everyone!
I will definitely come back again and hope to host some sort of brunch or tea party here in the near future. What a great little New England spot. -

La Burdick has always been one of my favorites. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in New Hampshire. If it weren't for La Burdick, New Hampshire would be a complete culinary wasteland. In other words, most restaurants SUCK in New Hampshire. La Burdick sure doesn't. The location of the restaurant and chocolate shop is a bit out of the way as it is in the middle of nowhere but it is worth the trek. The restaurant is very visually appealing on the inside and outside and is located in Walpole, which is a classic charming New England town. More importantly, the food is great. I have been for brunch, lunch, and dinner.
The lunch and dinner were great. However, the dinner is a bit pricey. None of the meals are cheap, but the brunch or lunch is a better deal and just as fun and delicious. My personal favorites are the steak frites and the beef stew at lunch and dinner. The brunch is also delicious. I like either the steak and eggs, some of the best I've had, the country breakfast that comes with these amazing homemade maple breakfast sausages, and the eggs benedict. At each meal, you get a bread basket with this delicious homemade baguette and sour dough bread. Even better, it is no problem to ask for more bread throughout the meal if you would like. All of the food is delicious, but the bloody problem I discovered when I had brunch with my family there yesterday was lots of the food was not hot enough. My mom ordered a soup which was delicious and sent it back two times because it was not hot enough, and both of those times it still was not hot! Same for the coffee, which was a shame because it was amazing coffee. Also, this is common for restaurants these days with bernaise or hollendaise sauce, the holendaise sauce on my eggs benedicts I ordered yesterday was not hot at all, it was in fact becoming kind of cold throughout the meal. What a shame as well because it would have been an amazing eggs benedict if only it were hotter!!! Then of course the desserts and chocolates are incredible. Yesterday when I was there, it seemed as if the restaurant had fear or problem with using heat. Not just the food was not hot enough, but the temperature of the restaurant felt rather cool and drafty. My sister was freezing as she wore her down jacket for the whole meal.
The dessert menu is actually quite overwhelming for me as someone who loves sweets as there are so many delicious fine cakes and pastries to choose from, that is what makes the restaurant unique is their variety of desserts. Also, each person who is part of your party gets a free chocolate with the bill. You must try a cup of the dark hot chocolate with your dessert, it is by far the best hot chocolate! Then, on a hot summer day try the iced-chocolate, it is amazing as well!
The chocolate shop is great. It is bigger than the one I go to in Cambridge, Mass as I am down in Boston more often from where I live in NH. Unlike the one in Cambridge, there are usually lots of bowls filled with free samples of chocolate which is great for exploring new flavors and types of chocolates.
Overall, whoever came up with La Burdick had a brilliant idea! Try it, it is worth it. I would have given this place a 5 star rating if only some of the food was a bit hotter and the heat was turned up a little bit, especially on a freezing cold winter day. You will want to come back again and wish you had something this good and pleasant where you live. -

I'm not Gordon Ramsay, but the chef could use some intervention in my opinion. Fresh local farm ingredients were masked by overly seasoned sauces. Dishes were very "heavy handed" in general. Great service, but the meal did not live up to my expectation unfortunately.

Ok, so in the times I've been back, it's been a bit lack luster.
The cheese platter is always amazing, as are the breads, chocolates and desserts, but my friend and I have a fondness for the steak frites dish. We now have a joke based on our wait for the steaks, even.
Originally, it was served with a lovely side of wilted spinach, some kind of sauce, and thin, crunchy steak frites.
Now, the last few times in '09 when I got it, it was progressively worse... either it was cold by the time it came out, served without spinach (replaced by a large pile of meh-tasting fries). Maybe it was becuase it was towards the end of the night, maybe because we're young and can't tip over the top, but we weren't cheap customers.
I expected a bit better.
Still, I'd always have their other dishes anytime.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This review is on the chocolate shop only, not the restaurant next door.
Very good and unique chocolate confections. A little on the pricey side but on par with most "chocolatier" shops.
Try the hot chocolate! It's made with their melted chocolate and is great on a cold day.
There is a nice restaurant next door that is attached to the chocolate shop. -

You can't get much better for a rural NH fine dining-ish type restaurant than Burdicks. Linen table cloths, nice beer selection, delicious cocktails and delicious food at reasonable prices. I know some people consider $17-25 for an entree excessive, but after growing up on Cape Cod, living in Boston and now living in NH, the prices are right in line with most nice restaurants.
You'll also see the spectrum of people there. Older couples in sweatshirts, 30 somethings in their Saturday best out celebrating their anniversary and families out to dinner with teenage children.
An assortment of imported and local cheeses, farm fresh salads, absolutely delicious beef stew, we were not disappointed. Not only is the food excellent, but the service is as well. The host was accommodating for a walk in and quickly helped us feel comfortable at the bar. Can't wait to make this a monthly tradition. -

The first real review of the cafe!
Yes, I drove 2.5 hrs to go to this cafe. I've been wanting to try it out for 4 years, and now I got the chance! I wanted it to be 5 stars. I really did. But I just cant do it...
I went here for their Oktoberfest celebration. The cafe is a dimly lit, cozy, wood lined gem in the little town of Walpole, NH. We started the night off with some Oktoberfest by the fire outside. Chatted with the locals and had a nice time. Got called into our reservation at 7:30.
We were met with a decent, but rushed server and good bread and pretzels (the pseudo German kind). We ordered potato pancakes with sourcream and ham, and with applesauce. Wurst with another pretzel. And as mains, sauerbraaten, pork sirloin wrapped in hay, and kaese spaetzle. Part of the problem is that I just had a fantastic time in Munchen, and this didn't par up. The other is that the food just didn't have that "damn!" to it. It was good, but not "damn, that was worth the drive." The best part might have been the torte and Black Forest cake.
I expected more from the service. I expected really nice, towney folk, but the experience was more akin to the Harvard location. Nice enough, but not really warm feeling. It was also crowded and rushed like the Harvard location.
We also bought somewhere near $100 worth of chocolates, including Obama chocolates! But I was sad to hear that they didn't have any exclusive chocolates to the Walpole location. I think this would have made me return.
In summary, we had a great time, but the food just didn't meet expectations. This shouldn't stop you from traveling out there and having a wonderful time as well. As a caveat, I consider myself a pretty harsh critic, so your food experience may be spectacular. -

Where am I, Berkeley or Vermont? Almost... but, you get the vibe and the idea. Excellent coffee (latte, espresso, etc. etc.), good food and big city prices. So yuppified is the brunch here... then you can go buy your John Deere tractor... My quiche was excellent and made with flaky puff pastry. Wooo.

This is my favorite restaurant in the world. They've hit the balance point between refinement and ease. The food is utterly splendid. Desserts, as you'd expect, are astounding. Great wines by the glass. I just utterly love this place.

I love this place because you can get excellent food here, which is carefully made, and not extremely expensive. I've been here 5-10 times and never left disappointed. The Amazing: oven roasted duck, sea scallops, steak frites, sole muenier, warm goat cheese and arugula salad, and the nice, light, cheap pinot noir glass-pour. Oh, also the extra-small hot chocolate in the least-sweat version. It's like drinking an incredible 74% cocoa chocolate bar.
I was going to list the things that were only 'good' next, but I can't think of any. I cannot complain about anything at this place except that the crowd is usually about 65 avg age. : ) -

There is very much I could say about Burdick's in Walpole, but mostly I'll shut up, because the stuff behind the counter speaks volumes for itself, Suffice to say, this is the best hot chocolate served anywhere at any time in any place. Visited here with some friends during an early summer afternoon, had a scone and then...the piece de resistance...the hot chocolate! I've never had a better one and that's a fact.
Usually when a place is built up so much it never seems to meet expectations. That is not the case with Burdick's, which is as good as advertised. Their other baked goods (Black Forest cake, most notably) were very tasty and would rank at least three stars on their own but the real selling point here is the chocolate. Service was relatively fast, despite the fact that the dining room was packed and there was a line at the counter...and I went in what was supposed to be their slow season. In all, treats for three came to a bit over $21, which, despite the price, was reasonable, given the quality of what we consumed.
When I go to NH I typically travel up the eastern roads but whenever I'm in the western part of the state I make it a point to stop at Burdick's. It's chocolate heaven and always worth the trip. Pretty amazing, I'd say. -

We had a great lunch at Burdick's today. They were celebrating Bastille Day and had a special french menu, complete with a fantastic selection of wines from France.
I had the Salad Nicoise and the tuna was cooked perfectly to order. The summer salad went perfectly with my champagne and was light and fresh.
My bf had the duck with cherry sauce and potatoes and loved his meal as well.
We finished our scrumptious lunch with a dessert of macarons. We tried four kinds - espresso, chocolate, raspberry and lavender. The lavender flavored macaron was exquisite- delicately scented and sweet, but not overpowering.
I would highly recommend Burdick's to anyone in the NH/VT area. Such a surprise in this quaint, beautiful town. Come visit and check it out soon! -

Our visit started with a lesson for me on how to pronounce "Walpole" correctly by my two Vermonter companions.
I opted for steak frites...not very imaginative on my part, but I did like the fries here better than Tip Top's. I had a mixed organic green salad, which was a little too heavy on the dressing for my taste-I usually ask for dressing on the side, which I should have done here. One of my dining companions had warm goat cheese salad, which entails a lot of watercress to eat. We discovered that getting through so much watercress is a challenge.
I also had rote grutze tea/lemonade, which was very pretty, but too sweet to have ordered with a meal.
The food was very good, but the service not so much. I was never given a steak knife for my steak, which really needed one. One of my dining companions ordered something that was described as a big ravioli with veal in it, but instead she was brought veal scallopini. After several tries to correct the mistake, she gave up and ate what she had.
We had two desserts: Hazelnut-Orange Cake, which was great, and Chocolate Mousse Cake, which was heavenly!
Any visit here requires a stop in the chocolate shop for some treats for the trip home. -

Update - had a great meal here tonight. Coming for dinner, rather than lunch ... the prices didn't feel so disproportionate. (And since I didn't pay, they really weren't any issue!).
My entree was very well executed - the seared sea scallops with some reduction (balsamic?) was nice, but the accompanying greens topped with a parsnip puree took the dish to another level. I also had a real nice butternut squash soup to start.
The wine selections by the glass were not extensive, but adequate. I think there were half dozen solid options for red by the glass.
By the way, some of the breads here are from Orchard Hill Breadworks, which is a bonus.
I'd still feel underwhelmed at lunch (they could solve this real easy with a modified lunch menu), but for dinner - no issue, nicely done, 5 stars.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cavendish, VT
We had dinner here last night with friends; our first return trip in over a year. The focus is locally produced foods, it all is interesting yet very good. The food is fresh and flavorful. Proportions are realistic - not a plate piled with food but more than just a few pretty bites. Around the table we had curried goat (delicious), perfectly seared scallops and roasted duck breast with fiddleheads. The wine list is very reasonably priced and covers a great range of terroir but is not particularly unusual. All the choices are good wines that you've likely heard of already.
The atmosphere is cozy and casually elegant without feeling stuffy. Staff is professional yet friendly and helpful. There are a few comfortable bar stools and a lovely bar but it's right in the middle of the dining room.
My only critique is that the desserts run heavily to cakes and cake-type options with little for a last sweet bite without being filling. Though, at the end of the meal, a Burdick chocolate for each person is served with the check. Yum.. Cost: $110 for 2, including wine.
In all, a lovely spot for dinner practically in the middle of nowhere but well worth a drive. -

Creative cuisine but we were there during the Oktoberfest so the harvest menu wasn't as diverse as I'd like. What it lacked was well made up in desert options and chocolate mice to go! Anyone who has ordered from Burdick knows what the mice are, this is the home of the mice and they're well placed in this quaint New England environment.

From the bread at the beginning of the meal to the hot chocolate at the end, the meals here are excellent. I'm not crazy about the wine list, or that every time vie been there, there's only been one vegetarian option (which is an admittedly tasty omelette) at most--I went there for for new year's eve and i had to order off the menu.
My strongest recommendation is that you order the cheese plate. They do an amazing job of curating it and pairing the cheeses with a seasonal fruit. -

Super rich, buttery French cuisine. They try to use local ingredients as much as possible too.
Good for the area, but probably slightly overpriced for what you get because there is not much else around. -

What is a California guy doing in Walpole, New Hampshire? The story is too long and a better question is, what is a restaurant this good doing in Walpole, NH? Tucked into a valley on the edge of the Vermont border, Walpole is a great little greek revival town with a colonial flavor. Small town, slow pace, beautiful area. Imagine my surprise when some friends took me to an amazing restaurant there. The story goes that a successful documentary film maker who's name escapes me for the moment, lives in Walpole and wanted a good restaurant there. He met a fantastic chocolatier and financed Burdick's. The chocolate is top notch, but it doesn't stop there. The ambience, service, and food were also great. I started with a blue cheese salad with walnuts and bacon, then had seared scallops with lentils and broccoli rabe. Finished it off with a fresh fruit tartlette and some chocolate to take home. Amazing place that is up to big city standards and keeps the small town feel. If you're ever within 100 miles, go to Burdick.

So worth the drive. Actually, the drive was part of the pleasure. I was in nearby Putney VT/ Landmark College when a professor recommended I come here to destress. Yummy pastries, VERY rich hot chocolate (so yummy, but my tummy couldn't handle it), wonderful ambiance. I really miss driving on those back country roads.

Encinitas, CA
Beautifully initimate fine dining restaurant with a hint of country style. Also includes a full service cafe connected to a sinfully delicious chocolate shop. My sister took me here for drinks and appetizers. Decent wine list, great bottle (beer) selection, but only standard beers on tap. The service was attentive and patient with any questions (not to mention attractive). The menu consists of artistic higher end selections. I very much wanted to try a little bit of everything (it all sounded delicious), but was there for a quick nibble. We decided to share the cheese plate. It came with five chunks of cheese, a very small portion of fruit, and a dollup of marmelade. The plate is large enough to share with no more than four people. The cheese ranged from a mild camambert to a stinky blue. I loved how a couple of the cheeses are locally made. None disappointed. I do wish the platter came with more fruit. The place is a bit on the pricier side, but a great experience. The meal also ends with their complimentary signature mouse truffles. So cute! The chocolate store was a treat in itself. Little tasters of a bit of everything are displayed. Downside...most expensive chocolate store I've been in this country. The chocolate is great, but my god $8 for an ounce of chocolate almonds? I do want to end this on a happy note cuz this place is somewhere I'd visit again. My dad's frugality would say otherwise, but the quality is worth the price.
