I couldn't live out in the country, even the suburbs. The idea of driving miles to a bakery or specialty shop ... and I mean a standalone bakery (not in a grocery store) ... just isn't appealing at all. Many northern neighborhoods of Chicago have a bakery or two, and Bunz happens to be Edgewater's. It's located a few steps, literally, west of Thorndale station. Strategic, I must say.
Yup, Bunz have that "neighborhood" friendliness. Buying only one turnover? Your presence is still valued. I really like that. A LOT. Their pastries are cheap and hefty in portions. All of this creates a positive experience.
My visit to Bunz was almost random (was on the way to Loving Hut). Nevertheless, I'll remember this bakery with their scrumptious delectables and courteous Asian gentleman behind the counter. If I lived in Edgewater, I would certainly come here regularly.
(No, seriously. I would. I'm a sucker for cheap, good food served by super nice people.) -

I was lucky enough to try a cake from here at a recent event and this was just delicious!! The cake was chocolate with banana filling so you can picture a banana split but in a cake - this is what you got.
I was also told that they have chinese pork buns and other delicious Asian pastries so I will have to make a stop and check it out. I also heard that they'll be featured on 190 North, as well! -

Cute, bright, CLEAN little bakery on Thorndale. I only popped in here for a large coffee - which was utterly delicious. The friendly woman behind the counter waived the $5 minimum debit card rule since I had no cash. Way to do business!
The interior is eclectic and vaguely Asian - it's actually decorated fairly sparsely, but cute. Love the wall colors, it seems happy in here.
And when I say this place is clean, it is SPOTLESS. I happened to notice the condition of the refrigerator when I retrieved the cream pitcher for my coffee (yes, I notice stuff like this). Couldn't have been fresher and cleaner - VERY impressed with that.
It's just a bit out of my way to come here often, but I'll definitely be back, as my dog groomer (BarkBark! 5 stars!) is right around the corner. Really nice place - it put a smile on my face to walk in and be treated so well for a simple transaction.
And the NAME puts a sly grin on my face as well. Love it! -

If my friend hadn't suggested we try this place, I might never have gone. I pass it every day, but never gave it a second thought.
Bunz's dough is amazing. I had a hot dog bun, and it was the perfect mix of chewy and crusty...nice and warm too. For dessert, a cream cheese turnover, aka sugary heaven. It was FULL of cream cheese and coated with a crispy sugar topping.
Oh, and they make their own pizza puffs! Unfortunately, they hadn't made them yet when we were there but I cannot WAIT to try them. The dough was the best I've had in the city, so the pizza puff has gotta be incredible.
Prices - excellent. Customer service - excellent. And they were playing Sublime's 40 Oz. to Freedom album when we were there, so I got to wax a little nostalgic.
Yay, Bunz! -

Today I broke the law. Bunz Bakery was complicit.
Metropolis coffee and a delicious red bean twist bao for breakfast, all for under $3. It was moist and sweet with just the right number of sesame seeds. I couldn't help but snarf it down on the El. I was very careful not to leave trash, and there weren't any crumbs - I ate them all!Listed in: Livin' on the Edge(water)

Sooo fantastic to see a new and wonderful small business open here!
So I stumbled in, literally after testing the bottomless mimosa deal at Broadway cellars- and yup- they never stopped us (I think we stopped at 14)! Bunz is cute as can be. A small, tiny space that is clean, bright and friendly.
I knew I needed food, food for the day and food for the office the next day. The owner was working- and incredible!
She introduced me to the the ham and cheese sandwiches, ham and egg, turkey and cheese sandwiches. These awesome things are all enclosed in these tasty and handy Bunz- and for 1.59 each- quite a steal. Better yet- I got them for 1$ EACH! WOW! I loaded up on 3!
I also grabbed a piece of carrot cake because my sweet tooth was in high gear after the champagne.
The CAKE- IMPRESSIVE as ALL HELL! CREAMY- RICH, SPICY, with the right type and consistency of frosting.
The sandwiches? I have been dying to go back and pick up more. They are a commuters dream. And at that price, I think I could live on them.
What a WELCOME addition to the hood!Listed in: Sugar- Ohhhh Honey, honey!…

Great prices and friendly service make you smile right away. Great tasting asian and american pastries and treats. We had a couple of the ham and cheese buns which the proprietor warmed up for us. A good, quick, tasty, no frills sandwich/pastry option and priced right. A neighborhood gem steps from the Thorndale L stop. I wish Bunz the best and will be back.

Bunz is fantastic. Talk about friendly! The owner is one of the sweetest people I know. She's very cheery and super friendly.
Her food is delightful. She explained to me that compared to the shops on Argyle she serves traditional buns with a Western twist along with the staples. When I lived off the Thorndale stop, I got a Turkey and Swiss cheese bun almost every week. I tried the pizza bun not too long ago and was not at all disappointed.
For the price, Bunz offers amazing treats. -

I think I saw this place on 190 North, but correct me if im wrong. I live right by Argyle and I go there to get my Bao fixing for the week. So when I saw Bunz, I didn't think much of it until I noticed this place had a ton of people inside.
I got their BBQ Pork Bao, and their Ham and Cheese Bunz. This place is on par with most of the bakeries on Argyle. The Bao was good, but it's nothing compared to what Argyle has to offer. It's closer to me so I go here for a quick Bun fixin'.
I was kind of bummed when they turned their focus on selling pizza. It's a good idea - especially in this economy - but the quality of their bunz and bao did not go down.
They seem to have a general selection of pizza (Hawaiian, BBQ Chicken, Pesto, etc). But I can't wait to go back to try the Thai Curry Chicken Pizza with red curry coconut sauce, onions, mozzarella, mushrooms and basil.
Go here for their Ham and Cheese or Egg and Cheese Bunz. -

Reasons this place rules:
Convenient location!
Everything is super cheap!
The cream cheese turnovers are perfect!
The coffee is Metropolis, which is amazing!
The pizza is so good and a whole pie is a great deal!
They have...wi-fi? I mean, who doesn't have the internet at their house anymore, but hey, if you need a hot spot, boom! -

I finally checked this place out. First, it is no longer called Bunz. It's called kCafe, i think. But they assured me they were the same owners...very friendly and personable.
Looks like they're possibly doing fewer buns and more pizza and south asian hot dishes (pho, spring rolls)? Not sure though, it could have been the timing.
I just ordered a bbq pork bun, hot, to go. Big mistake. They took it out of the case and into the back and microwaved it. The problem is, when i finally looked into my sack i found the bun...still in it's plastic wrap all hot and melty! The plastic wrap had practically melted onto the bun. Even if they heat it for a shorter time...I still don't want ANY plastic touching my food in a microwave. EVER. Big, big, big problem. So i wouldn't/coudn't eat any of the outside of the bun. But i did try the filling which was pretty flavorful. Not your tomato-saucy or even chinese-y bba, but rather a slow-cooked pork with lots of vietnamese flavorings.
I love a family-run joint, so i'll go back for some entrees. And i have to admit, the pizza looked pretty darn good. But i won't let them micro my buns anymore! -

The owner rocks. I have been meaning to write a review for a while now and have brought take out menus back for my building to discover. I don't have much of a sweet tooth (it all looks tasty though) but they have a creative and good pizza menu and smoothies are pretty good too on a summer day.
Redline commuters should make it a routine to stop in for some great coffee and a friendly face to start your day! -

Very friendly Asian bakery in Edgewater. I stopped in hoping to just get change for the parking meter and ended up grabbing some delicious muffins. The lady behind the counter was very kind and pointed out the Asian pastries and explained what they here, since she could tell I had no experience with them. I'll definitely head back. Good spot.

Best chocolate and banana filling cake ever (that's not too sweet - just the way I like it) with a perfect chocolate ganache layer on top. I had a sample of it at a birthday party and had to know where this cake was from. I ordered one not too long ago and it was amazing. Reading the other reviews, I'm very excited to go back and try some more of the other items.

The owner couldn't be friendlier or more accommodating, and the prices are very good.
Excellent red bean and lotus twists, and other good Asian pastries too. They also sell more ordinary fare like filled croissants and muffins. The chocolate ganache cake I tried was very good. This place could make me fat, but I'm glad it's here! -

Small Asian-style bakery. Much like La Patisserie P, they offer a selection of both Western and Asian desserts and baked goods, with a wide variety of filled buns and turnovers. I sampled the Chinese bbq pork bun (baked, not steamed), the red bean paste twist, and a curry beef turnover. All were delicious, generous of filling, and HUGE. I made the mistake of eating the pork bun and the red bean paste bun in one sitting. It was too much. But tasty. There are also more traditional pastries, including a lovely-looking mini apple pie, and pretty decorated cakes by the slice.
As the previous reviewer noted, the service (I think the owner works the counter) is very friendly, especially compared with the, let's say, efficient attitude you often encounter on Argyle. I hope the place thrives, because it's exactly the sort of thing this somewhat seedy area needs. -

I must start with a disclaimer. I live right down the street from here, so I am a little biased. This business opened on June 26, and they are off to a pretty good start. They have great fruit smoothies and desserts. I have only been once so far, since they are new. I got a blackberry smoothie and a small flan. Both were excellent, the best part is the service. These people are SUPER nice! I hope they continue to do well. My only reason for not giving them a 5 is because the place isn't looking so great aesthetically. Its because they are new and haven't finished painting and stuff...hopefully when this is done I can give them a 5!

This is a relatively new place. It's the best breakfast bunz you can get in Chicago. They have many varieties. I would eat here every morning but usually get them every Saturday. Great place, Great people.
