Bunmeido Honey Castella Cake---my death row dessert.
Long live Akira. -

huzzah, hoorah or hooray! However you want to say it we were there last week and decided to drive by just to see for ourselves if indeed the doors had been shuttered, so to speak and lo and behold to our amazement, Akira was not only there but he was open, kind of.
While he hadn't made any mikasayama that day, he did however have castella cake. We of course didn't even mind that we had to wait while he cut the cake from a huge just finished sheet, talk about fresh!
So the good news is if everything goes as planned, he should be up and running again and fully opened in another month. Thank God we'll be able to stop by every trip out to Honolulu to refill our pantry and satisfy our castella craving.Listed in: No Reservations (Mini Tour)

My family has been eating the castella cakes for years now. Every time we have a special visitor, or if we go to see my great aunts or relatives, we make a stop and pick up some cakes. Most of the older folks adore them, and I'm not a big fan of sweets, but I'll scarf down a piece or five.
Akira-san was SUPER friendly and helpful the last time I went there to pick up some treats for my mom. I want to hug him! -

6/24/08: Grabbed a few boxes of the honey cake ("Castella Cake" Japanese sponge cake) before heading into the office (looks like a great omiyage gift for future mainland or outer island trips). Jeez, talk about another local treasure. One man operation, don't miss this place - while there's not much to see, take your kids here to show them someone with dedication and who loves their place in the world (I hope he likes his job). I bet he closes early once the day's batch of baked goods are gone for the day.
more to come after i try the cake tomorrow... -

I brought Bunmeido up in a conversation today and now my friends think I've fallen for Akirasan. His cakes are SO good!!! What else could I have said? I guess they weren't used to hearing delicate flavor or pleasant aftertaste about cakes.
I'm not fond of cake.
I will not eat them with a mouse.
I will not eat them in a house.
I will not eat them here or there.
I will not eat them anywhere.
Alas, the other Yelper's review convinced me to try it.
Mikasayama, perfectly sweetened azuki beans sandwiched between two light mini pancakes, is the McGriddle equivalent in gastronomic delights.
You do not like them.
So you say.
Try them! Try them!
And you may.
Try them and you may, I say. (: -

Bunmeido is now open under the name Buntendo! I was horrified to see his store was closed late last year but saw his new sign up and stopped by. Akira said he had to close temporarily due to name infringement or something, I have a hard time understanding him, Im just glad he's up and running again! I love his Mikasayama! Please stop by and support him! not many establishments like his are around these days.

What an AWESOME cake! they do sell it at shirokiya but it is cheaper to buy it from the maker. I bought a small castilla cake for $4.42. Delish!

CLOSED! They changed the name to Bumtendo but when we went by it is now closed. So Sad! A sign in the front window says "Closed. Go to Japan."

Our friends had the great idea to give out Castilla cakes as wedding favors. For weeks, now months after I've been thinking bout these subtly sweet, wonderfully moist honey flavored cakes. Make sure to call ahead and order some, truly one of the island's unique delicacies. :)

this cake place is the best. the man who runs it is the closest human thing to a hobbit i have ever seen! he's adorable, runs the place himself, gets up at the b*tt-crack of dawn to make his own cakes and mochi (it's a single man operation) and greets you with the cutest "ohioooooo" when you walk in. he even wraps his cakes and mochi himself...
anyhow, if you want to get one of his cakes, GO EARLY! he only makes 40 cakes a day and by 1 pm it seems like he's usually sold out. he told us that some of his clients from asia actually go and stock up or put in extra orders, in which case even more of his cakes sell out. i think that says something if japanese ppl are going to hawaii to buy cakes to go back to japan... (we found it confusing too).
anyhow, i did find his cakes a little sweeter than the kind you get in taiwan and japan, but whatever. was just happy to be able to find someone who could make it with that kind of pound-cakey texture! -

I was excited to try this place but when I got there I found out that they're CLOSED! More like "out of business" closed. :(

Decided to check this place out after reading an article on it in the Hawaiian Airlines magazine. The owner wakes up daily @ 4am to make the delicious Japanese pastries from scratch - using old traditional techniques.
I bought the honey castilla and red bean pancake sandwiches. All I have to say is that we were in heaven with each bite.
I'm going back tomorrow to get some for family/friends to try!
