Bun Boy, we miss you! How weird it is to make a pitstop in Baker now, which used to be one main street of small businesses catering to roadtrippers. Now it's almost all fast food chains and looks like the food court at your local mall. Bun Boy is now a Bob's Big Boy, and not a very good one. Sigh.
Bun Boy Motel and the big thermometer are still there. -

Bun Boy's gone? I have fond memories of this restaurant. Driving through the desert on my way to Vegas and seeing nothing but desert and then comes Baker. Where to eat well Bun Boy of course.
It was a nice break from the long drive. -

It's your last chance to use the bathroom before the long stretch of endless road to Vegas. It's the blink and you've missed it town of Baker. I think 10 people live there.
If you've ever driven to there from L.A. you've probably seen the "world's largest thermometer" that is their claim to fame.
The food is average cafe fare. Nothing fancy, but it's not bad.
They also have a gift shop, so you can buy all your friends back home a miniature thermometer. -

I think I got a lemonade here or something. It was years ago, 114 degrees (ask me how I know!) and my dad and I were joining the throngs in their metal cages on the way from the desert hell of Los Angeles to the even hotter desert hell of Vegas. The lemonade was necessary. Fluid loss was at a maximum. Lemonade was good.
Oh yes, you want to know how I knew the temperature? After all, this was over a decade ago, before thermometers in cars were ubiquitous. I knew because of the huge friggin thermometer out in front! Seriously, it's the biggest thermometer in the world, and it has to be to hold the stupidly hot temperatures it reaches in the summer.
5 stars for the lemonade, 5 for the thermometer, and minus 6 stars for the stupidly hot temperatures. My higher math leaves me with 4 stars, so there you go! -

RIP Bun Boy, I think it was the chicken fried steak that finally killed you.

We did not have a good experience here. No problem-it has closed and is now a Bob's Big Boy. We have not been at this Bob's location.

Bun Boy, I can't believe you're gone! I'm only reviewing you now because I have to give you posthumous props for your fresh strawberry milkshake, which I will miss dearly on my drives to and from Vegas. It was my tradition to stop here in Baker usually after a weekend in Vegas and this shake never failed to quench my heat exhaustion, hangover, hunger, sweet tooth, daily fruit intake, etc. I was disappointed to see the imposter Bun Boy- Bob- in your place this past weekend. So I headed to the Mad Greek instead as they had a big sign advertising their fresh strawberry milkshakes. Either my tastebuds have changed, or the Greek don't know how to shake up some milk and berries like the Bun Boy did. Alas, you are no more. RIP my sweet milkshake.

We drove to Baker this past weekend from Las Vegas just for the heck of it, and to buy some California lottery tickets. We were both disappointed to see Bun Boy (which had been there since my father's days in the Army Air Corps in Victorville during WW II) gone, and replaced by yet another boring, drab, nondescript chain place (Big Boy).
