3 reviews for Bukom Cafe
Ive been checking out Bukom Cafe for many many years....rated 5 Stars because it represents everything one is looking for in an African/Carib/international scene that there is to offer in the DC metro area. Lets start with the scene, quaint lighting with music featuring live bands most nights, get you in the mood for chillin and relaxing, when the tempo of the rhythm increases the floor (8X5) gets packed with bodies moving to the great beats of the motherland, music played is usually reggae, perfect for those who dream of sandy days. Next there is the food, you will not be disappointed, Ive probably had everything on the menu, and YES its all good with out exception.
There are many seats in the back (including) a loft area when the crowd gets festive. There is a drink that is my all time favorite, The Bukom Bomb, try it once and you will be hooked- promise me. Also be sure to check the African beer, stroooonnnngggggg, have two and let me know how you feel:). The clientele features all kinds of folks with the same idea in mind, good music, good food, good drink, and a damn good time. For you sports hounds, there are televisions that feature current sporting events, so while getting your social groove on, you don't miss the latest action. Lastly, I have been to Bukom Cafe many many times, and each and every time has been memorable with a new story to tell from each visit. Enjoy
TQ
I will repeat generally the same review I gave for Ghana Cafe, the food just doesn't stand up to authenticity! I don't know if they try and Americanize it for general consumptions, but it does a disservice to West African food! And first of all they have no Omo Tuo (rice balls and ground nut soup)... major sin #1, #2 nothing is spicy enough, #3 their ground nut soup is not good. The location is great and the atmosphere is fun, but for me when I want a West African meal, I want it PROPER and this doesn't cut it. I repeat my plea that if you want GOOD Ghanaian food go to Akosombo or even Rainbow in Gaithersburg... hmm I should review that one too!
I've been to Bukom three times, and each time the food has been delicious! The service is good, and the portions are a nice size. It's in a good location too - there are lots of other places around if you want to bar hop, or just walk around. If you want to sit down and eat, I suggest that you get there before 10, because it gets crowded. If you go, make sure you try the cassava leaves.
