omg, i love this place. that's all i can say. my boyfriend and i got the combo A and it was more than enough food for us! i don't know what people are complaining about! just be quiet and eat the flippin' food! duh!!! the little side dishes and sauces were full of flavor. i really want to come back here!!!
This a favorite between my boyfriend and myself! We've been to a few others in the Convoy area, but we always come back here for the special combo A at dinner time, and we can barely finish it! For 50 dollars between the two, you get chicken, shrimp, meat, and pork. Along, with the side dishes, rice, soup, and the Jap Chae! Yum! They also have other combos that are more money, but bigger portions for more people!Granted I don't know much of Korean BBQ, but I looove this place.
Started off okay, but left unimpressed. The host was friendly and greeted us with a smile. Great start guys. I suppose everybody orders Combo A which is basically a variety of meats... beef, chicken, pork that resembled thick cut bacon, and shrimp. After that though, we weren't spoken to again until it was time for the check.
Anyway, after ordering, they bring out 10 or 12 little plates with some completely random items. Some were identifiable, some looked like oxy pads for zits, others looked like used tampons. No explaination of what anything was. Come on guys. Ignorant white guy here. Throw me a bone.
The also bring out a plate with all the raw meats and immediately throw half of it on the grill for you. Well, I guess we're starting with beef. Thanks for the choice lady. I didn't like how the beef and chicken were touching on the plate. I guess I have no choice of done-ness on my beef now that it may be contaminated with salmonella from the chicken.
I felt rushed while eating here. After we wolfed down the beef that the lady threw on the grill for us, we figured we could finally take it slow, but as she walked by, she grabbed the tongs and threw another round on for us. So much for a relaxing dinner. Gotta make sure we eat the food off the grill before it burns...
Anyway, the food was good. Just wish I knew what half of it was and wish I had more time to eat it. I dont think I'll ever be back though. They're not the only spot in town like this. The only real saving grace of this place was the host and the beer they serve. Hite. Haven't had that stuff since I was in Pohang in 1998. Good stuff.

I don't know what's the hype. It's aight. The meat is good but seriously I need more of it. I'm not a glutinous pig of any kind but I left totally unsatisfied. While I watched over my thinly cut piece of meat on the grill I ordered more rice because I knew this sandwich meat sized portions was not going to help me out. I mean I just finished surfing for hours and I need to replenish. I don't understand the whole thing about cooking your own food but for the price I pay at this place...they better cook my food. I guess this is the mystique of the place. My friend took me to this place and between the two of us we spent 55 bucks not including tip. Go get your meat on somewhere else.

When I used to work at an optometrist's office, the hot sales rep. from Alain Mikli took us all out to get some yummy Korean BBQ at Buga. Funny name isn't it? But they serve some high quality Korean BBQ!
We ordered various cuts of beef - bulgogi, kalbi, chadolbegi, chicken, pork (sangyupsal). They give you wraps so you can wrap a fat slice of meat with dwenjang or gochujang and some rice and stuff it all in your mouth. You can also ask for rice wraps, although I'm not sure if they charge extra. They also hooked us up with small servings of cold noodles (nengmyun) for those who wanted some. They also have some pretty good shabu shabu.
I can't give you an opinion about the price because I arrived when everything was already ordered and I didn't pay.. duh :)
But what I can tell you is that Buga is one of top places to go with friends or a large group to get some good ol' Korean BBQ. Yum!

This was the first Korean restaurant I tried since moving here. First of all, it's right off the freeway and you have to cut past an exiting ramp which is kinda scary. It's a large space--we went on a Sunday night and the place was packed. Four of us shared the Combo Platter B (or whatever it's called) for "2 or 3 people." That was about $90. Bottom line: the food is good. The meat is good, they give a large amount, good variety, good flavoring. The small dishes (banchan) are tasty. The cold noodles (naeng myun) were refreshing and flavorful. BUT our server pretty much ignored us the entire night. The busboy was around more than she was--we ended up asking him for a bunch of things and he was very oblinging. I don't care how hopping the place was--the waitress is supposed to change the grill, put the meat on the grill, bring us glasses to drink our booze and ask when we want our rice or noodles. She was incompetent. So if you walk in and get a waitress named "Tina Choi," ask for a new server. Go for the food, not the service or ambience.

The meat here is really delicious! The service was very good - anything we ordered we got it within a few minutes. I was very impressed.
Wow, unexpected blast from the past! When I first moved to San Diego, I didn't know anyone here or anything about SD's different neighborhoods. I didn't even have a place to live yet, so I just grabbed a cheap, relatively centrally located motel room for the first few nights until I got my bearings. As it turns out, when I went looking for a good Korean BBQ closer to my newest apartment here than my old favorite is, I came across Buga - and it's right next door to that motel. I guess that explains why I spent the first few minutes of my lunch at Buga trying to figure out why it felt so familiar. I'm pretty sure I've been in that building before, though it was definitely not Buga at the time.
Probably because of the building's motel-restaurant past, the ambiance ends up feeling a lot like a Korean Denny's. They haven't really changed the setup, so you still have the entry vestibule, cash register next to the door, rows of naugahyde booths separated by tinted plexiglass partitions, big glass windows overlooking either the freeway onramp traffic or the parking lot - the works. While I was waiting for my order I watched a group of men who had just left the restaurant cluster around my Prius, chatting about it and making swooping motions with their hands over the rear window and tail of the car. They completely ignored the Jag parked next to me - must've been engineers.
As usual for my first trip to a Korean restaurant, I ordered the bulgogi, partly because it's a good gauge of how much effort they're willing to put into a basic dish, but also just because it's my favorite. It came to the table really quickly, but I wasn't impressed. Or maybe I should say SO I wasn't impressed. I got the feeling they had it already made, and the oily, boiled look of it and bland lack of flavor reinforced that impression. There were signs all over the restaurant proclaiming what great beef they get, field-fed from Colorado (or whatever), but you couldn't tell it by this dish. It's not that it was bad so much that it just wasn't good. I was really unimpressed.
I might come back some other time to try a different dish, but only if I happen to be in the neighborhood. The service was decent and the food's still better than some of the other, much worse Korean places I've been to in Kearny Mesa. But if I want really great Korean it looks like I'm still driving over to Shozen, in Scripps Ranch.

I had no idea what Korean BBQ was before I came here. So this review is more about the Korean BBQ experience as opposed to this particular restaurant. I have nothing to compare it with.
Korean BBQ is way more fun than Sushi, Hot Rock, "cook-in-front of you", or anything else interactive. You are served a huge plate of thinly sliced raw meat (beef, chicken, seafood, etc.) and you cook it on the grill in front of you. They give you several dipping sauces, several types of salads and pickled Asian veggies.
I don't have a family, but if I did, I think this would be a great place for eat and have fun making food on the little grill in front of you.
The meat quality was very good. We ordered about 6 plates of meat ranging from beef tongue, tripe, chicken, galbi, and bulgogi. It was somewhat clean except for a bug zapper right behind us...which was kinda creepy. We also order a side of kimchi stew with pork which was okay and the spicy squid which was awesome. Service was alittle slow due to the place being pretty busy but overall it was a good experience
I always like this place. Have been coming here and bringing friends. If you come in a group order the combo's, but always order less than you think you can finish because their portions are huge. i ordered a combo C for 5 people, but we only needed a combo B because we ordered beef tongue too. you do end up smelling like korean bbq after.

Best Korean BBQ in San Diego. If you're like me and lived in LA, you will be absolutely disgusted in the Korean, or any Asian food in general in SD.
But Buga has stepped up to the plate to deliver Korean food that is atleast on par with its LA counterparts.
Nested right off the i163 on clairemont mesa blvd. This hidden gem gives you a taste of what Korean BBQ is all about with an added punch to your wallet. My favorite has always been cha-dol-bae-gi (sliced brisket). I always order the Combo (has every type of meat, from kalbi to shrimp) and substitute atleast one item and order another plate of brisket. There is a correlation between the service you receive and how many fluent Korean speakers are in your group. The more the better. So be sure to bring that Korean friend on your trip.
Be sure to come earlier, before these guys "run out" of duk bo sam (thin rice wrap) like they do every night. There are only three places in San Diego that serve duk bo sam with korean bbq and Buga is one of them. This is not something to overlook. Buga also has one of the best salad mix (to eat bbq with) that I have had the pleasure of scarfing down, putting alot of LA spots in the dust.
Food 4/5
Best korean in SD. One of the best salad mixes.
Price 1/5
Bring that crowbar for your wallet before stepping in here. Their serving size is rather small also.
Service 2/5
You know the stereotype. Although sometimes not bad, the service is a hit and miss depending on what time of day.
Ambience 4/5
Not too crowded, very clean, nicely lit and right off the freeway incase you want to go crazy with the soju.

The meat is high quality. another good thing is... they serve Shabu Shabu. Granted it's not "authentic" Japanese, but it's still yummy... I wish they'd update the decor, but for the price and quality, it's a great stop for food.
We ordered 6 plates of meat for 6 people and walked out stuffed! The meat was great, especially the marinated steak and short ribs. (~$17-26 per plate). We found this place through yelp on a quest for all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ in San Diego, but I guess it doesn't exist? (If it does, please tell me right away!).
Overall, I would come back again to this clean and pleasant restaurant for its good service and great dishes. I'll have to try something other than BBQ next time, for sure.
Getting into the details, the quality of food was great and I liked that they were generous with their side dishes like the flat rice noodle sheets. The dressing on their salad is really tasty, and the "birthday soup" (not to be confused with birthday suit) was included and was seasoned well. To close, the dessert "drink" was cold, cinnamon-y and so refreshing! Although it wasn't super cheap, I think it wasn't bad and was really worth it. Of course, never as awesome as LA, but that's what you get for living in SD. :)
Reserving 5 stars until I can find an awesome all-you-can-eat place in SD on par with this restaurant.

YES! This is the Korean BBQ I had been waiting for. Tender high quality kalbi wrapped around the bone. I'm drooling at work just thinking about it. The marinade is close to perfect in the sense that it's not too overpowering to cover the taste of the beef and has a great balance of sweetness to it. Service is pretty nice. It's one of the more "classy" bbq joints I've been to. Even the servers are in traditional dress. Panchan wasn't bad but I was a little surprised since this place supposedly has the best pan chan in san diego but I found the dishes to be pretty average. We also ordered the spicy pork but didn't realize they would have it prepared in the kitchen. Had I known, I wouldn't have ordered it since grilling the meat yourself is half the fun. That order wasn't that great though and I was disappointed.
Overall, it was pretty good especially for San Diego. Next time, I"m going to try the black pork belly bacon stuff because the couple eating next to us ordered it and it smelled amazing. The other downside though... for being this pricey, I'd expect them to have the meat prepared over charcoal rather than a gas grill.

Okay, YUM! Part of what I love about Korean meals is the variation. There are plenty of small dishes of kimchi, bean sprouts, other veggies, etc. to accompany your entree. The Galbi and Bulgogi were great. The place is clean, except for some oil marks on the seats from the sizzling grill. The Seafood Dolsot (stone pot thing) was rather oily for my taste. The service is really friendly. Complaint: EXPENSIVE. I will be back, but I gotsta make more money first.
Oh Buga House how I love thee.
I write this review while eating leftovers from last night. Spicy stuff! What a way to wake up in the morning!
We always get the bulgogi when we come here. These are slices of yumminess -- tender, fatty, and juicy. Each bite is a squirt of happiness as the meat juices flow into your mouth.
Other reviewers have commented it's not cheap. No, it isn't but Korean restaurants should not be confused with Chinese cheap restaurants. This is a different country with different food, and you are definitely getting what you pay for. For $30 / person, you get high-grade beef and lots of lots of side dishes and a good time. Fondue or Italian would cost just as much.
P.S. Wear clothes that you don't mind to get smoke in.

Buga is one of the best (and I think one of the only) places to get dduk bo ssam (paper-thin rice noodle squares to wrap grilled meat) in San Diego. Not only are their meats fresher than any other Korean BBQ I've eaten in SD, but the service is much more customer-oriented. However, I do think that the level of service one receives here depends on the fluency of Korean that can be spoken in your group. And when it gets busy during the weekends, don't expect to be able to flag down your waitress for a good 10 mins.
I can't get enough of the grilled "cha dol bae gi" (thin unmarinated slices of beef), which is dipped in their simply delicious salt and sesame oil dip, and finally wrapped in a soft rice noodle sheet. I like the unmarinated meats more, because I think dduk bo ssam is best eaten without all of the overpowering soy sauce-garlic-and-sugar marinades. But that's not to say that Buga's kalbi isn't good...it's delicious! Every meal starts off with the wide variety of banchan, a rich beef soup, and a green leaf salad with a light vinaigrette, and every meal ends with "sikhye", a sweet Korean rice drink with pine nuts.
As with most Korean BBQ restaurants, Buga's prices are also very high. Luckily for me, my roommates always treated me to Buga. But I've seen our tabs come out to be $250-300 for 5-6 people.

As a Korean I don't understand why everyone raves about this place. To me it's not any different than Seoul BBQ in terms of quality. Sure you might get a little better banchan at Buga but is it worth the price?
If you really want good korean bbq go to korea town in LA. Or honestly make it at home. It's not that hard-email me if you want a recipe.
I keep telling people Koreans don't even eat that much bbq. It's more of a "going out" or special occasions. Eat kimchee chigae or daenjang to be more authentic.
AND PLEASE! when you eat bibimbap or dolsot bibimbap do NOT eat with your chopsticks. You might think you are looking authentic but you look a little ridiculous. use your spoon, that's why it's there....

I just love Korean restaurants. I had been here at several times at different times of the day - loving each visit.
What makes this place even more cool to me is that an ex's Korean mom loves this restaurant, how legit is that!?!
Tadow!
Minimal vegetarian options but the side orders that come with all the entrees make up for that, which there are about 10 or more small plates of small dishes. There are a couple of vegetarian dishes. All of the entrees come with a cinnamon tea drink with pine nuts - served cold, and this was very good.
Service - pretty good. Our lady did not speak very good English.
Things I ordered:
1. Nyeng myun - grey buckwheat noodles in grey seasoned broth with cucumbers, radishes, and a boiled egg. This was a bit too sweet than what I'm used to at home so I just added some chili sauce and vinegar to dampen the sweetness.
Make sure you take a shower afterwards - you will smell like bul gogi for the rest of the day!

This is one of the better korean bbqs in the area. I'd say the pricing definitely isn't cheap, but the quality is fantastic.
The kalbi is really great quality. The meats are all very fresh and the pan chans are really delicious. The mustardy radish to wrap around your meat is delicious, and the duk (rice paper) is just right.
I've also had the food there (non bbq) and the naeng myun is pretty good, the noodle soups are pretty bomb too. This is a good place to take family that is visiting. I think they also have a sushi bar out back, but I could be remembering incorrectly.
Pretty good food. The portion sizes are a little small for the price. But we really enjoyed the food. Update. We have been back many times. Really love the food.
the best korean bbq in san diego and i have been to a couple. make sure to order at least 2 meat dishes so you can do the whole grill-your-meat-at-the-table thing. otherwise if you order one they will grill it for you in the kitchen.

i lOOOVE wrapping my meat with duk bo sam rather than eating it with rice. is there any other korean bbq in san diego that has it??
MMMM delicious. This is the kinda korean bbq I'm talkin about. The food comes out super quick so don't bet on waiting too long if you're hungry. There's a lot of panchan, but nothing really stood out to me. Most of them were kinda bland. The meat howver, was off the hook. We got the one bone kalbi and it tasted absolutely scrumptious. haha. Ridiculously well marinated and tener. The spicy pork however was kinda weak. Super oily, don't cook it yourself, inconsistencies with the meat, etc. Be sure that whatever you order you cook it yourself if you dojn't want it swimming in its own juices. Overall the place has 5 star food, but 3 stars for the price. I know its supposed to be really great and have high quality meat, however you have to order to dishes of meat to bbq and its not that much food. I feel like its just not worth it. I'd rather go to Zion and marinate some meat to my taste and devour it.

In San Diego, the Korean places are disappointing compared to LA. However, so far, I found this place has the best korean BBQ in San Diego (outside native korean homes). You cook it on a grill, and the Kalbi so more delicious than the Bulgogi (but this is more popular). Korean food is ment to be eaten family style, which is why they give the mini-portions of various side dishes with each meal. If you are planning on eating your own dish, this is not a good place (because this is the place to share and have BBQ -- see review on Bonghee Seul Lung Tang). The menu has options for a complete novice- just order the set menu and share away.
Yes, it's expensive, but Korean food is always expensive because it's so labor intensive and fresh. There's Korean-american places that shortcut preparation of dishes and it shows! It tastes horrible to anyone who is familiar with korean food (no names, but there are some in SD).
Recommend using the tongs or a new set of chopsticks/forks to cook the meat and a diff set to eat for hygenine reasons.

Buga is just consistently solid Korean food. No bad dishes. Unfortunately, you pay for that, which is why I didn't go five-star. Good portion sizes, a laid-back atmosphere with zero attitude, and plenty of parking. This is the place you go to satiate a craving, not to impress a client or your in-laws.

Good KBBQ, but for the price, you can get much better in K-town in LA. Maybe I'm just bitter b/c my brother and I came for lunch on memorial day last year and apparantly, lunch prices are not applied on holidays. This is the only place I've tried KBBQ in SD so far- my bro and I got one of their more pricey plates of meat and stuffed ourselves silly. Decent panchan.
OMG. I've gone there twice for the open bbq and it is sooooooooooo good. Pretty expensive.. so go in a group.. even with the price, it's worth it. They have these combos where they just bring out a HUGE PLATE of raw meat.. different cuts and some seasoned. The plain beef they bring out that you grill yourself.. soooo good when dipped in the sesame oil/salt/pepper sauce they give you, and then wrapped in this .. rice skin that they give you. Hard to describe.. just go try it. I also love all the cold dishes they give you.
Nothing goes better with korean bbq than korean beer! HITE!

Yelp gets all the credit for me going here- wanted to take our Korean friend to Korean bbq and this came up tops (i look at number of reviews, mostly)
Now, I've eaten Korean BBQ in places like Oakland and Contra Costa in Northern California and it's always a pretty ramshacklle affair- stacks of charcol, and meat on a plate. Buga had meat on a plate- but so much of it, and different kinds, and the meat was high quality and they had tons of sides, and my wife who *hates* the "korean bbq experience" LOVED buga.
The only downside are the prices, which are about 20 per person and up from there. Def. recommend!!!

This place is really very good. In my opinion the best Korean BBQ in SD. Their Kalbi is really awesome. It may not be as good as the best places in LA, but their kalbi really is good and the little plates that come with every meal are very good. This place is a lot more expensive compared to the Tofu House or the Convoy Tofu House, which I also go to.
I used to see Buga Korean BBQ with the huge red sign "Sushi Rolls" whenever I would drive by on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. I never thought to try this place until I saw all these great Yelp reviews. After making a sharp turn into the large, uncrowded parking lot right next to Motel 6, I was there!
The prices are high, but comparable to the other Korean BBQ places in San Diego. Expect to pay $20-25/person here. The unmarinated rolls of meat are good, and so is the marinated beef (bulgogi). The variety of panchan is decent. They give you an assortment of panchan: seaweed salad, kimchi, bean sprouts, preserved radish, beef chunks, seasoned spinach, seasoned potatoes.
There is very little smoke in Buga! Our hood wasn't even turned on! My clothes didn't smell like beef when I walked out! I like the prompt, fast service at Buga. I like how they give you hot barley tea in cups when you walk in, and cold cinnamon tea when you're done.
I didn't like the quarter-cut corners of radish daicon that they provide, or the meager squares of rice-paper that come with the BBQ. The pieces are quite small compared to Korean BBQ places up north. You can hardly wrap any meat and veggies with the quarter-pieces of daicon here! So we had to keep asking for refills on the rice-paper wrappings and daicon.
Rice came with our BBQ. Also seawood soup! I was comfortably stuffed after leaving this place. It's definitely one of the better places for Korean BBQ in San Diego. It might be one of the only ones with the daicon and rice-paper wrappings too! (Don't think Korea House has these!)
All in all, if I"m craving Korean BBQ w/ the rice-paper wrappings or daicon, I"ll definitely come back here. Unfortunately, this place is not nearly as good as Shik Do Rak or Cham Sut Gol up in Garden Grove, so I have to give it only 3 stars.

My ex-girlfriend agreed to go to this restaurant for my b-day a few years ago. It was kind of pricey, but a great experience. They have grills in the middle of the table and elaborate ventilation systems above each table. They bring out meat and dipping sauces. You cook your own meat, then dip it in various sauces. I did not understand a whole lot. I did recognize the kimchi though, but other than that I was out of my element and my ex was way out of her element. I would like to go back with a Korean friend and have them explain everything. Some day.

Well, just got back from this place and I was quite impressed. I didn't think San Diego had a good Korean BBQ place until Yelp helped me find the way. :-P
It's a nice adequately sized restaurant located next to a crappy Motel 6. It really doesn't do the place justice as it should. Oh well, inside was nice. Right when you walk in there's a little room on the left for, I guess from the looks, reserved seating for 10 and a karaoke machine. I was tempted to run in, lock myself inside, and grab the mic but forced myself not to. The main seating area is divided. To the left is a sushi bar and seating mainly for sushi eaters and to the right were the tables with gas grills built in. Very kewl but I really prefer charcoal. I'm sure here in the states there's some type of law against it. The atmosphere was laid back but the music was a flashback to the 80's. The songs playing weren't being sung by the original artists. So it was even worse. Next time I'll have to bring ear plugs. Problem solved.
As for the food, it was delicious. My friend and I ordered the combo for 2 which was $49.95. There was a lot of food but I couldn't stop until it was all gone. I won't say much on the food because everyone else here already summed that up.
Price is in the $25-40 per person depending on how much and what you order. Anything extra requested is charged; and that means steamed rice too. I didn't even think of it because even the steamed rice was quite tasty.
So all in all it was a great experience to eat in a traditional Korean BBQ joint vice the Yakiniku places I'm used to from living in Japan for a few years.
Tip: The last bowl that is brought out right before the check or at same time isn't hand soap like overseas. It's actually cinnamon tea. I felt like an ignorant white boy when the waitress informed me of what I did wrong. She brought me out another bowl and it was quite good. :-D
