While on the quest for a sports bar to eat chicken wings (see other reviews), and to watch the Rose Bowl on January 2nd, the boy and I decided to come here. We arrived only about 15 minutes before the start of the game, and even though it was busy, we were lucky enough to find our own booth, in a cozy little section of the restaurant.
The place was warm and inviting with a lot of nooks and crannies, and meandering rooms. Decorated with farm-style touches. The menu was extensive with traditional bar like options. We decided on the chicken wings of course. We were lucky it was 30-cent wing day too (Which is every Monday night apparently), and got them the "Gap-Daddy" way. There were plenty of sauce options, but seeing as I prefer my wings spicy, this was a good way to go. It had a good flavor of Tabasco in the sauce. The wings were kind of small (but I am not complaining as they were only 30-cents a piece!) and crunchy. You can choose between the traditional wings, or drumsticks with this option. Definitely not enough celery on the side however!
We stayed there for a few hours of course (GO Ducks!), and got a couple of pitchers of beer, and some waffle fries too. Our waitress was attentive, despite the busy night. We left with a relatively cheap bill, and happy tummies...and the Ducks got a Rose Bowl title win to boot! I'll be back for more sporting events for sure! -

I don't know why I've put off my review... maybe because I frequent this establishment far too often to admit!!
The drinks are always flowing and the food is always frying- it's a great place for some casual fun. I wish they had a few more beers on tap, and that they didn't always feature a seasonal from Bridgeport... but I'm amenable.
HIGHLIGHT = the Naan Pizza... it is delicious and totally guilt-free :) -

The Gap and I go way back to 2003. Every "Friday" night a bunch of my Christie School (holla!) colleagues and I would venture here to share, no wait, commiserate over pints about our work weeks and the kiddos we dealt with .
Fast forward to 2007 and my new job at LC brings us here occasionally for happy hour and appreciation nights from the dean. The food is ok, not anything special, but good enough to bring us back from time to time.
Fast forward to this last weekend. Seahawks have an early game and we need breakfast with a t.v. so the man can watch, and subsequently complain how he hates football and the Seahawks. (Fast forward 2 hours and he loves them and they win, weird). Anyhow... i digress. The Gap serves BREAKFAST! Who knew? Not this elite.
The portions are large but nothing fancy. You get what you'd expect from the Gap. Heaping portions with a little more grease than your stomach wants. We also had the Bloodys and they had too much W sauce for both of us. In fact, that's almost all we could taste. If you're gonna drop moolah for a something you might as well go wait in line like the rest of Portland. In the meantime, I'll be introducing DVR to the man. -

I've never had even a bit of food here--we go to see friends play music in the attic upstairs. But I can say that the drinks are fine, the menu is HUGE, and last night I was really jealous of the people at the next table, who were eating a gigantic plate of nachos. They looked delicious. And someone nearby was eating something that smelled like beef stew, and that smelled delicious, too.

Have not been here in YEARS! Why? Not really sure, but glad we went the other day! Great big menu with really good food and service! Fun mix of people and very reasonable on pricing too....

Surprisingly douchey. I'd guess this is a hot spot for the upwardly mobile Lake O denizen not quite brave enough to go downtown.
Also surprisingly family-y. There were like six brats in the area we were in.
Service was good. I arrived late to meet former coworkers and was approached by a waitress right away. I decided on food quickly and had a beer and a solid reuben in like 10 minutes from sitting down. And no problem splitting checks. Boo yah.
I got the sense they were slightly understaffed. There were a few times I wanted to order but couldn't find our waitress. It seemed more like a systems failure than a service one.
The cinnamon roll is amazing. Get it. Even if you'll hurt afterward, it's worth it. -

Came here for another hangover remedy after another long night of drinking. Belly a rumbin' an tumblin'... must get food in me quickly before something goes terribly wrong! We found ourselves at Buffalo Gap Saloon and Eatery. T'was a sunday mornin, week 2 of NFL on, large televisions in their room, speakers blaring through the entire restaurant. Good times.
I ordered the Corned Beef Hash - Hashbrowns, onions, bell peppers, topped with deli style corned beef. Served with 2 eggs any way and a side of fresh fruit. Very large servings. Corned beef was okay, nothing special, hashbrowns weren't crispy enough for me, a lil too soggy for my palate. The good thing was when I left...no heartburn! Surprising.
What else others ordered: one ordered the Bob's Red Mill Hot Oats - apparently these are famous, they won some sort of prize in a contest, hmm, who wudda' known? They look appealing to me, my friend liked em...Hey Mikey! He likes it, he really likes it!
Had a vegetarian at the table, she ordered the vegetarian hash, looked decent, didn't try it, but she ate almost 2/3's of the plate, pretty good for a girl.
Buffalo Gap was an a-okay brunch place, only thing keeping it at 3 stars was the football. Service good, food good, not the freshest I have eaten, chairs very rustic and on the uncomfortable side. -

Stopped here yesterday for a quick bite. I didn't really care for "Please seat yourself sign". It wouldn't help if the place was busy. As we walked in there was no one around until we walked through the bar.
The bathrooms were a hit and miss. The men & women's signs were camouflaged which I didn't care for either. The service and food was good. -

What a fun happy hour! Night out with the co-worker gals and had a chance to sit out on their patio. I enjoy that this place is not overly crowded during the week like some other places closer to downtown. I've been here on a Friday/Saturday and yes, if there's music or sports you want to probably arrive early to grab a seat.
The outdoor patio is small but a nice change of pace from the funky inside saloon. The happy hour prices are great! $3.95 for some awesome BBQ pulled pork tacos (2) and some chips/salsa. YUM! For $2.95 the Hummus platter was generous. My co-workers also tried the pizza and salad which looked great as well. The only thing that saddened me a bit was it appeared that there was no discount on drinks. They make up for it with the food prices but it looked like wine may have been the only discount? Correct me if I'm wrong.
PROS: Great atmosphere, great happy hour prices, good food! Aside from HH, try the Ruben or a burger. SOOOOO GOOOD!
CONS: No HH drink specials? Service was OK, but a tad slow if you ask me. It could have been because we were seated on the patio however. -

It's a rare occasion that I am tasked with ordering lunch for my team at work. And let me tell you that the Buffalo Gap has borrowed the Staples Easy Button. Their website has the to-go menu with enough of a selection to please every appetite. You know how usually someone is not happy on the restaurant choice? I did not have one complainer in the group! In fact, they loved every bite.
I couldn't have been happier too that the manager made my job easier by providing a scanned receipt (for that damned expense report!) and delivering the food on time! I got nothing but easy in placing an order for 19 people and I cannot thank them enough. -

Stopped here with my sister for lunch right after arriving in Portland... we were HUNGRY!
For the appetizer we ordered Buffalo wings with the hot buffalo sauce. They were good... but I wished the sauce was hotter.
For the main meal, we ordered two burgers and shared:
Buffalo Burger - I didn't like it much and felt it wasn't flavorful and too dry.
Jack's BBQ Chix Burger - It was really good. Completely opposite from the buffalo burger. Very flavorful and the avocado made it great.
We also ordered a large side of tater tots with seasoning. The side was HUGE, and they were the best tater tots I have had. Their portions are very generous, and we were satisfied with the overall meal. -

Growing up in Portland, the BGap has a special place in my heart (hence the 5th star). It's a great place for friends, sports, drinks, food, live music, trivia, and service.
Food: Not your typical bar food...The Rueben is In my top three all time; they have three selections of fries (including sweet potatoe); great chicken fried steak, big omelets, killer French dip.
Drinks: Great Bloody Marry (8.0...and they have a supersize option), decent tap selection, strong drinks.
Games: Big buck hunter; 2 pool tables; Lotto; the classic sit down 2 player Ms. Pac-man -

Sunday afternoon rolls around and I'm sitting in a puddle of sweat. I decided to meet a friend at Buffalo Gap and try their happy hour menu which starts at 1 pm and goes till midnight. I had 2 cocktails (not well), a caesar salad which actually had large shavings of parmesan cheese and very yummy, also had the nachos which was disappointing because there was so sour cream. No sour cream!
My bill came to $15! No type-o here, $15! This place has ample seating, a/c, and separate areas that could be a little more romantic as well. -
Review from Joshua M.
The couple times I've been in here it's been pretty dead. First time around I had a buffalo burger, it seemed appropriate. It was pretty good, not out of this world but it hit the spot. Second time around the enormity of their menu was overwhelming, and I defaulted to chicken strips and homemade chips and wasn't thrilled with them. The homemade chips were pretty decent, but the chicken strips (which I realize isn't exactly an a-list item anyway) were overcooked. Second time around the AC was also on overdrive, and I felt the need to get out fast before hypothermia set in. My advice to the Gap is to minimize that menu some. Ditch the mediocre performers and make my ordering situation easier. Otherwise is seems like a pretty decent hole in the wall type of joint.

Funky and dark, there were some interesting special events upcoming acording to the posters on the wall. Food prices at happy hour were decent, but beer prices weren't any cheaper. The back room with the pool table and the televisions would be nice for a small party.
Cheaper beer or a better tap list would have gotten another star, both would make this a 5 star place.
Incidentally, not really vegan friendly, unless you like the usual hummus for those of you following along that are in that category. -

Everyone makes mistakes. In my opinion the most important part of making a mistake is making it right. Buffalo Gap stepped up and comped (rightfully so) after we found a paper label in our nachos.
I was with a small group at this lively bar a couple of weeks ago. The service was good, the food selection offered options for everyone, the noise was a little high but all in all what I expected at a bar. -

Great food, good atmosphere, great prices and great service. From burgers to fish and chips to your typical appetizers the Buffalo Gap delivers every time.
We have driven out of our way many times just to dine here. Never been disappointed with any aspect of our dining experience and will return again and again. -

My continuing quest to Yelp as many business lunches in PDX continues....
Hit up the Buffalo Gap on the recommendation of a colleague today. It's close to the office, so getting there was a snap. Parking was a breeze, and we were seated immediately.
The atmosphere here is mostly in the "Roadhouse" aesthetic, without the peanut shells and such. The menu is gigantic, and has more options than it probably needs (does all that pasta really fit with the program?)
The service was quick, friendly, and not at all overbearing. I got the Reuben, and my colleague had the meatloaf sandwich. We're pretty health-conscious guys...
The food was great, and the atmosphere was pretty neutral, which means the Buffalo Gap stays on my "will return" list!Listed in: BizFood: PDX

I've never been too particularly impressed with this place. Their food was "meh" service was okay. This is the sort of place my grandpa really likes.
I've been here for a few hosted events, and it was a pretty good deal, but not the most amazing ambiance. -

Sunday happy hour from 1PM to midnight... yes! The happy hour food was decent, I got a rather large side ceasar salad and two chicken tacos with chips and salsa for only $6. The drinks were reasonably priced and reasonably potent. The service was good, not to pushy, and they showed up in time to refill my drink and not leave me waiting long.
All in all, I think this is a great place for happy hour. -

I have always enjoyed this place for drinking and listening to music, but I was pretty disappointed with my eating experience. The food itself was pretty good, but they gave me something extra on my plate that i didn't order...ants.
The waitress treated me like an inconvenience when I told her, so that kind of bummed me out too.
Good place to go after work and have a beer, but I will not eat there again! -

So, I just saw Yelps E-mail about Mac & Cheese. What is the true definition of great Mac & Cheese? Being a childless man, I can only imagine that truly spectacular Mac & Cheese means it's so good that a runny nosed crying machine would turn their nose away from it. Kids don't like good food. So, if they won't eat it, it's got to be good.
The Buffalo Gap has that great gooey baked M&C that I wish I had known about when I was in college. And the only thing that makes it better is that they will also serve you up a dish of Chili Mac. Yes, Chili Mac. It is of my opinion that the BG has the best beanless chili in town. Mix that up with a bowl of artery clogging pasta and melted cheese and you have been given a bowl of love.Listed in: Top Restaurants, The Places I Go Out

This place kinda has something for everyone. I've been here so many times, and never had a bad experience. And I've never even been upstairs for the tunes. They have a cozy and large varied space downstairs with pool, digi jukebox, low ceiling dark woods cabin-y tables near the bar, booths near the sporty big screens and a patio for the smokers.. Also those scary little alcoves of Lottery games. For the squares there is a more formal restaurant area near the front door.
Generous burgers (buffalo too) with all the fixins, sweet potato fries (!), crab cakes, salads. The menu is hugehuge.. almost too much to choose from. The staff is usually busy, and sometimes forgetful, but they get 'er done. A decent selection of microbrews, not extensive, full bar. Depending onthe night you can snag a great table near the big screen for the game or near the pool tables/deer hunter video game.Listed in: Got Beer? (list in progress)

I wish this bar was closer to me so I could walk home drunk.
From the outside it looks like your sterotypical sports bar with a trendy name... but, once you step inside you notice seperate areas to sit in along with 3 pool tables and video poker.
*they stop serving full menu at midnight and then start serving microwaved pizza by the slice-stay away from the pizza after midnight it doesn't taste so good. -

Trivia Night? Yes please. Extensive menu? Oh hell yes. Ample seating? Sign me up.
I wish this bar wasn't BFE and next to absolutely nothing; if it wasn't, I'd go to it far more often. They have a great selection of beer and seriously probably any kind of bar food you could have a hankering for; the menu is absolutely enormous. Also, Big Buck Hunter AND pool tables? Rock and roll. If only they had darts, it would be the perfect combo platter of bar games.
The waitresses and bartenders are friendly, and both food and drinks arrive in prompt manners. If you find yourself randomly kicking it on Macadam for some reason, hit this bar up. You won't be disappointed. -

A friend had a gift certificate to this place so we ventured out on a Monday night to get some eats.
Monday night is 30cent wing night but the funny thing is the server didn't mention that. What she did mention was that the wings were much smaller than the regular order wings and that they only come in the spicy sauce... well no problem for us. 30 wings for 9 bucks is a pretty good bargain in my book.
We also tried the fish and chips (fish ok, chips ok, didn't even touch the slaw it looked so nasty), reubin (not bad), cheese burger (decent burger but expensive), tacos (nothing really mexican about the taco - tastes like american made taco mix from the store). Beer wasn't all that cold.
Probably would go back on a Monday night for the 30cent wings but that's about it. Outside seating is pretty limited. -

What a miserable place. We went on Mother's Day, because a friend of my MIL was in the band playing upstairs. When we arrived, the bar was packed, but we were going to eat anyway, so we went downstairs. First of all, the "Please seat yourself" policy does not work if it is busy. Our server was overwhelmed in the dining area while the server in the pool room had plenty of time to goof off while she flirted with the boys and occasionally brought them a drink. Our server was well intentioned and tried to be nice, but was undertrained. While we were waiting to order (20+ minutes, mostly with no drinks), two surrounding tables had problems: wrong charges, wrong food. Our food? WORST. PIZZA. EVER. Seriously, I'd rather have a three for a dolla' frozen pizza from Food 4 Less. Thin, flavorless crust...heavy on the flour. A little uninspired sauce, crummy cheese. Gross. The wife thought the Mac and Cheese was "OK" and MIL liked her steak. The Nacho appetizer wasn't bad.
After dinner, we went to the bar. It was still busy, but a couple was just leaving and we were able to grab a table at the back, even though it had not been bussed. The server came by 4 times, 3 times to bus the table, once to deliver drinks to an adjacent table. Not once did she ask if we wanted something to drink. (we did.) Finally, I got a drink from the bar. The bar: Really, Buffalo Gap? Really? You appear to be an upscale hangout sports bar but no local craft beer? Oh, they had Mirror Pond next to Bud, Coors, Pabst and other dreck, but not even a Ninkasi? I'm sure HUB could get a keg to you. Seriously. Grab a clue. Bars in Portland need at least a small selection of local craft brew.
In summary: Lousy service, horrible beer, did I say WORST. PIZZA. EVER? This place is a hole. -

I have only been here once before and it was probably 5-6 years ago. The place hasn't change much since then. I think the only one I noticed was the large plasma on the wall. Otherwise, same old, same old.
That being said, I was jonesing for a good burger as I've been off red meat for a few months. I ordered the Bacon and Blue burger with sweet potato fries. OMG! I was in heaven. The burger was juicy without being greasy, the bacon was the perfect crispiness and the blue cheese sauce was tangy but not too sour. I would have preferred the fries to be a little less shoestringish, but they were still mighty fine. And the portions!? Get outta here! Out of control big. I could only eat about 1/4 of the fries.
I was in the attic for the music so got a good eyeful of all kinds of yummy food. Everything looked and smelled wonderful and again, the portions seemed quite large.
I thought the service was pretty good considering there was only one waitress for the entire area.
The only drawback is the parking. I was lucky enough to find street parking about a block away, but I got there about 2 hours before the music started. I can't imagine how far away some of the others had to park.
I'm going to put it on my list of places to check out again - for breakfast. They have a sizeable breakfast menu and most importantly, they serve a 21 oz. bloody mary!Listed in: The Places I Go Out

I was there to attend my first Karaoke event with http://Meetinportland.org. I quickly looked at the menu and thought "HUMMUS!" I was also seeing "QUESADILLA", so had to order both as they were very cheap after 10 p.m.
First, the Hummus plate....it was a lot more than I expected (quantity-wise) and though it didn't have a big pop of flavor, the bread and veggies made it really good. I was able to share this dish with others and still have more than enough for myself.
The Quesadilla was also a good sized meal, especially with the Hummus. It was accompanied by sour cream and, I think, salsa. This is what happens when you type up a review over 2 weeks after the meal.
Just as a sidenote: Karaoke is held upstairs here and gotta say it's not a bad gig at all. I mean....you can't count on the singers to be good, but the set-up is pretty decent and the song selection is pretty sweet. When one member started to sing Howard Jones' "Things Can Only Get Better", that was ALMOST enough to get me hooked. The 9 p.m. to Midnight time-slot for Karaoke here is the thing that prevents me from making it a regular thing. -

Recently stopped in for an OMRRA meeting. The service was definitely friendly. The food was tasty. I had the Dakota burger or basically a burger with blue cheese and hot sauce. Tasted great. Most everyone else's food looked good too.
My only complaint is this is a bad place to try and have a meeting since there is generally music going on and the acoustics are bad.
Parking can be kind of tough as I don't think the lot is as big as the place is and the street parking can be limited by the neighbors. -

Classic saloon offers laid back vibe
You can go to a pub, bar, club or in this case, a saloon and there's a big difference. Leave your pretentious high heels at the door here and bring your boots instead to kick up some good old fun. You get the feeling that there's fun around every corner here when you walk inside and are surrounded by wooden walls and games abound. Although this definitely has a lounge around feel, there's plenty to keep you busy with pool tables and live music upstairs. Although I didn't eat, there were dozens of food items on the menu, which offered a great variety for a pub. What I liked about this place most, though, was its vibe. Very friendly wait staff and live entertainment. This is the place to go with friends when you don't feel like dressing up or putting up with any bull. You can kick back and have a good time and enjoy some great microbrews on tap.
Tip: Head upstairs for live music every Tuesday through Saturday. -

I have been here three times, once for breakfast , once for burgers and another time for drinks (maybe we ate, I don't remember). I really like the laid back atmosphere, the servers have been friendly, the food is good and the menu has a lot to choose from.
Breakfast was great. We both chose a different omelette and both were delish! There is just something about going out to breakfast and enjoying a bloody mary or a mimosa with your meal. Ok or maybe I just like drinks with my meal ;-)
The burgers are good, too. I have yet to find my favorite burger in town. For me, so far this place is in first. I do enjoy a McMen's burger but I think I like these more.
This is the place I think of when in the area and I just want a laid back place to go for a bite and a drink. They have a decent wine list for a bar, too, which surprised me.
One of these days I am going to head upstairs for some music. -

Portland, OR
It's definitely a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of a place; it's a sports bar, lots of TVs around, wooden tables a dark paneling, etc. They have chosen a Western-themed decors, which is fine. It's a good place for watching, yes, sports, though we watched the vice presidential debates here as well and had a great time.
The thing that moves this restaurant into 4-star territory is that the food is surprisingly better than expected. A sports-bar like this has every right to serve mediocre food, giant burgers etc. But they have a great selection of sandwiches and salads that are really good. I got soup here one day, fully expecting it to taste like it came straight from a Campbell's can, but it was clearly homemade and delicious. I love their veggie sandwich, which comes on toasted rye bread.
A solid John's Landing establishment. -

Portland, OR
Decent food, a few good beers on tap, and the prices are alright.
It wouldn't be the first place I'd think of when asked for a good sports bar in Portland, but it's good for what it is.
They serve typical pub food at pretty typical pub food prices and the menu spans several pages. The food's good not great, but the portions are insane so $9 for a plate of nachos that will easily fill two people ends up being pretty reasonable (but seriously makers of nachos out there: jalapenos or bust, okay?).
If you're a cinnamon roll fan, definitely try theirs. Especially if you consider the melty butter, sugary goodness that collects at the bottom of the plate a bonus (which you definitely should).
There's live music in the attic a few times a week and judging by the fact we couldn't get a seat upstairs last time we were there, it's probably pretty decent.
If I'm down for a few drinks but I'm not looking to make the haul anywhere out of walking distance, I am more than okay with doing some damage here. -

Great food. Cool atmosphere. Service could use a little work. Out waitress wasn't very attentive. We were there in a lunch break and didn't get our food until about 20 minutes before we had to leave.
When we got the food, it wa fantastic. The buffalo burger is awesome. I would highly recommend it. Tots were great too!
We waited almost 10 minutes after our meal to get the check. So overall it was only ok for me. But the food will bring me back. Also they have cribbage. So that helps. Lol -

This is the only place I have ever reviewed for a third time. I make this third attempt due to frustration.
On my last visit I ordered nachos, the chili that was put on them was just ground beef and grease. It was so greasy the chips has became soggy when they arrived at my table.
Yet Again, the service was horribly time consuming. The food came promptly but getting menus and cashing out should never take so long.
Waiting is not a big deal for me, I will wait 20 minutes in line at Pine State, 40 minutes for a table at Screen Door or Pizza Schools.... But that waiting here is unjustified.
I live right by this place and I wish to never return.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Not only do they have the best bloody mary in town, but they have a killer Nacho. I also really enjoy having breakfast during football season upstairs. The service is good and fast, and the patio is a nice place to have dinner or breakfast.
Try the Nachos and the Breakfast burrito.
Play a round of Miss Mac Man while you drink one of the many beers they have on tap.

Went for the trivia, will return for the cinnamon rolls. I knew it was going to be good, and I was not disappointed. Everyone was so jealous when the steaming bun with melted butter came out, and it was so delicious that I was barely willing to share it with my husband. Others in my group had to have one too!
A couple downsides to this place, slow not very friendly service, and crappy music. We easily found seating for our group of rowdy folks (where half the group is late so we keep having to reorder), and I appreciated that we had our own tab at the bar and didn't have to figure out the check at the end. It would be nice if there was more information on the beers on tap, I just had to guess and pick one because I didn't have much help, but I got lucky and liked it enough to reorder. -

Really Good Food and Atmosphere. Nice place Nice people. The litmus test for a bartender isn't how well he/she can make the best sugary-soroity-girl-f*ck-me-drinks, or if they can make an above average martini. No, bush league at best. A Bloody Mary, from scratch, that's the test, and they come in flying high and proud. A pitcher of beer, a round of Bloody Mary's, and good friends, a perfect summer evening or winter lunch.
Great old "70's barn wood" interior. (is that even a genre anymore?) Lots of spaces for you to be loud or quiet in. Has a great neighborhood feel with lots of regulars.
I'm grabbing a few clients and heading over there for dinner tonight. Oh, and as you might well guess, the Buffalo Burgers are A+ -

Went here for a work-related dinner.
Service was very good. Their special, at $9.95, was actually a better meal I've had at other places for twice the price. The special consisted of a coulotte steak, mashed potatoes, peppers and onions, and choice of soup or salad (I went with the soup). Steak was cooked perfectly to my liking; mashed potatoes were tasty; and peppers and onions were fresh. Soup was a little thin but flavorful.
Atmosphere is casual and staff was friendly and attentive. Definitely a place I'll go back to for lunch or dinner again.
