This is my current favorite resale/consignment shop on Haight.

They always have a great selection, and their prices are reasonable. We took our teenage niece here a few weeks ago and she found all kinds of good deals. I found a great black leather jacket that was only $32.50 - I had to get it for her.

There are other resale stores on Haight, but this one seems to have the best selection and the nicest staff.

Parking is on the street & not always the easiest to find, so be patient,

Buffalo exchange never seems to go out of style (well depends on your style, of course)

They use to have a lot of "shoe head" type of stuff here and I can really say I've gotten some "steals" here back in the day when I was in high school. They still have some good contemporary stuff and somewhat designer items too. I would probably go over to crossroads more for designer brand items. But all in all, they have good selection, a lot of nice plaid and flannel items, raw denim jeans and those sort of things.

I think they carry a lot of good stuff and as long as your clothes are close to really good condition and it looks like something good, they'd probably buy it off you too.

I love this buffalo exchange. I used to go to the one on Valencia all the time and always found something to purchase. The one on haight however is far bigger and has an equal selection for both men and women. Also, this store has more variety of fashion than the other.

Highly recommend for fashionistas + perfect place to trade/sell old unwanted clothes; but i'm not gonna lie theyre verrryy picky with what they want to take from you clothes wise!! :(

Not only was this the worst Buffalo Exchange I've ever visited, but I think it might have also been the worst resale shop on Haight.  It's not that the prices were bad; the selection was just really, really bad.  Everything seemed outdated and/or defective.  The Buffalo Exchange in Austin KILLS this one.  Save some time and walk across the street to Goodwill, where less rummaged-over goods means better finds for you.

This is my first time going to Buffalo Exchange, so naturally I was the first person to enter the store after it opened. There's a mix of contemporary items with hippie/vintage, but they favor vintage clothing more than anything. Prices are somewhat higher compared to Crossroads. You really have to dig in order to find something special. My best find of the day was a green army jacket with plaid lining and leather lining at the zippers for $19!

I never really knew about the whole world of Crossroads, Buffalo Exchange and Wasteland until recently when I decided to clean out my closet after 4 long years. Yes my styles are out of date, my clothes are scrunched up and I had no idea what I was going to do with them short of donating to Good Will. The bf suggested that I try out these cool buy back places so I decided to check my luck at this Buffalo Exchange.

The staff was EXTREMELY friendly and they had a numbering system for selling your clothes back. They go through your clothes and I feel like they have more respect than Crossroads. They're more open to buying more of your items, despite trends, and they're reasonable in the prices they give you. I ended up getting a whooping $40 for some used stuff that will never see the light of day again and I'm happy it got a second chance for someone else to snag it up for cheap.

This is a place not to be missed for all of you closet cleaners. And even some of you consignment shop hunters, a pair of miu miu's (old) for only $80! You can't beat that!

I've been to several Buffalo Exchanges between Seattle and San Diego. This is one of the best ones I've been into. There are other used clothing stores within walking distance. Good part of town to do a shopping spree. This is the Haight, right?

PARKING: Street parking. This is in the core retail section on the Haight. Be persistent in finding a spot. There are other stores within walking distance that will make this used clothing shopping spree.

SELECTION/CONSISTENCY: Naturally, the selection is dependent on what they are able to buy from people off the street. For the most part, they are consistently solid in being able to product a fine selection of old school clothing.

PRICING: Vintage store prices, don't expect to buy items at thrift store prices. As far as the chain outlets, these guys are competitive in their pricing.

    SERVICE: The service is friendly.

    Really more of a 3.5

This is a going to be a review from my perspective as a seller. I've sold here many times so I'm pretty experienced with the routine. First of all, check your dignity and ego at the door and grab a number to save your spot in line. They're here to make a profit. Don't take it personally if the buyer doesn't take as many of your things as you expected. Just because you think your fashion style is the shit, that doesn't mean that they're necessarily looking to buy what you've got. Face it. If your swag really were so amazing, why the hell are you trying to get rid of it? Don't bring things in that you wouldn't want to wear yourself and expect them to buy it.

Let's be real. If you're bringing your stuff in here, it's probably stuff you're not going to miss much anyways. So come here with the right attitude and you'll be happy. In my case, I was purging my closet of nice clothes that simply don't fit me anymore. I lost a lot of weight this year so I've had lots of nice clothes that I like but can't wear anymore because of fit and they were taking up valuable space in my closet.

From my past experience of selling, I've noticed that they tend to buy by season and for styles that cater to their clientele in the area. So if you come here, bring clothes that you would see folks in the Haight wearing. Think along the lines of hippie, hipster, slightly alternative, and kind of kitsch, such as crazy costume pieces. For example, I bought in a pair of Tripp boots here that the seller went crazy for. They were boots with a 4 inch heel, a massive platform, and crazy spikes and pyramids all over the shoe.

By contrast, Crossroads which is a few doors down, seems to buy more by trend and what's in style. For example, I had a pair of Diesel pants that got rejected here but Crossroads bought them. So just because your stuff is designer or high end, that doesn't mean that they will buy it here just for the label. I've read in a few reviews of people complaining that they don't buy high street clothes from retailers like H&M and Forever 21. This is simply not true in my experience. A lot of the clothes they bought from me were actually from H&M and Forever 21. They were clothes that were clean, showed little signs of wear, and were on trend.

For the most part, the buyers I've interacted with here have always been cordial. I've only interacted with 1 somewhat rude buyer and that was a long time ago. Everyone else has been reasonably friendly. Even with my extremely outdated pieces, I've never felt judged. If they don't want something, they always fold it up neatly and set it aside for you to put away. Most recently, I worked with Kathlena. She's the store manager and she was really sweet. For the boots that I was selling, which were on trend and new, she explained that they were very nice but they were overstocked on boots at the moment.

I also appreciate the fact that they tell you how much they're going to sell your stuff for as they buy them. At Crossroads, the whole transaction is done in silence. You get 35% cash and 50% trade.

So to reiterate, here's a handy checklist for prospective sellers:

-Grab a number right when you come in to secure your spot.

-Come here with a positive attitude and don't act like a diva if the seller isn't buying as much of your stuff as you thought they would. Having a shitty attitude is just going to annoy the buyer.

-I suggest bringing your stuff here in a rolling suitcase or a duffel bag. I've seen so many people bring their stuff here in trash bags. If you treat your stuff like it's trash, how do you expect the seller to view your stuff?!

-Bring in clothes that are clean and not extremely worn. Nothing with stains, holes, weird smells, broken zippers, missing buttons, or just looks generally disgusting.

-Keep your expectations low for price. If you're starved for cash, this is not your place. If you're just looking to make some extra money and clean out your closet, you've got the right attitude.

-If your stuff doesn't sell here, take what you have left down to Crossroads which is a few shops down.

-Donate the stuff you have left that you don't want to Goodwill, which is 1 block away.

The workers there are so friendly and helpful! I was looking for some rings and usually when I look at the jewerly pieces, some workers would rush me but I honestly did not feel rushed there!

One of the workers recently moved from LA so I wanted to get his opinion on living in San Fran since I was checking out the colleges there. He was so enduring and kind!

There are so many clothes and jewelry in the store, it's mind blowing.

I am a buyer not a seller here.  I really enjoy checking everything out - especially shopping for my husband.  Sometimes you can find awesome things.  Parking here wasn't too hard but it was Wednesday at like 2pm.  There are lots of cool little shops in the area to have fun in.  I had a good experience with the staff - they were friendly and helped my find a restroom for my two year old.  Thanks guys!  We will be back when we are in the neighborhood!

I love this place! I wander in her about every 3 to 6 month and I always find something nice that I didn't think I could find at this kind of store. Today after selling some things I traded for 3 new dress tops and a pair of shades. The staff is always uber nice and I will continue to pop in when I can :)

The selection of threads this place has is good.  I've seen my favorite brands, but I doubt that selling your clothes here would be even worth the gas it takes to drive there.

The service is polite and the store is clean.  I will def come back regularly for cheap finds, but I will stick to selling my clothes on ebay.

Went in there todayfor the first time to sell some of my used clothing.  Immediately i was greeted with a friendly employee. Eventhough i went there to sell my clothes, they treated me as a respected customer. Three employess helped me in the process and almost every single one of them greeted me with a big smile! I wasn't expecting top dollar for my clothes. I understand that they had to make some money too. The store has a wonderful selection for both men and women. They didn't take alot of what i had to offer but i was happy for what i had gotten. I liked how the cashier thanked me for selling my clothes as i was receiveing the cash. That was a wonderful customer service!!! I would most likely come back here again to sell my used clothes. Again, to the employees who have helped me: thank you for your hospitality. You guys deserve an A+++

Buffalo Exchange was my second hit list to sell the rest of my stuff that Wasteland didn't take. I had a pair of Limited Edition Vans that retailed for over $100. I wore them like 5 times and they only gave me 35% of $25! that hurt. They took a few shirts I had also. Came out with $22 in my pocket.

Great place when you find something for cheap. Lame place when you find something expensive. And lamer place when you don't find anything.

Lots of great vintage clothing and bags. I was lucky to find a jacket ($15) that I thought was a reasonable price. Too bad you cant haggle this thrift shop.

Customer service was bland. Only at the check out I was asked if everything was okay.

I was pleased with today's find, thank you buffalo.

Sorry Buffalo Exchange. I sort of have high expectations for my thrift stores. I'm used to cheap clothing (less than $20/item) and great selections. To have regular ol' dresses for up to $30 and shirts for $20 is simply way too expensive for me. I would definitely understand if varieties included top notch, designer brands or truly unique vintage finds. However, I saw skirts from Forever 21 for $11 (which is what I'd expect to pay for a new skirt there anyways).

The selection is decent, but amongst that giant store with racks and racks of clothing, I could not find a single thing I would consider buying and I could not find a single thing even worth it to try on.

It could just be that I wasn't in the mood to thrift at that moment, but when I compare to other thrift stores, this one doesn't quite meet my expectations!

This place a total joke. Save your time and donate your clothing for a tax write off. They're going to scam you, then turn around and sell it for 5 times what they bought it for. The guy before me had a genuine Prada hand bag for sale. They told him they would sell it for $45 (yeah right) and therefore could only give him $15 for it. Anyone smell a rip off? They won't buy anything unless it's "vintage" or only been out for a few months. Save yourself the long wait at the buy-back counter and support something more worthy than a glorified Goodwill

Awesome stuff as well as Staff i general :)

It's the kind of trendy thrift you'd expect to go for awesome deals and service. I've bought clothes here as well as trade some of my awesome clothes and got back 300 dollars for the clothes and shoes I don't used at all on one selling :D They bought my entire duffel of clothes which is sweeet :D

I like the bowties and jackets here as it's more of a hunt to look for great stuff at their store. One time I bought a pair of black Ray-bans, the Wayfarer kinds, for 20 bucks and that was really decent, considering they were the real deal when I had them checked :)

The clothes are really good quality for really great prices :) They buy your clothes too, of course they'll choose the awesome, trendy and well-taken-care-of ones :)

    Overall, Definite Recommend :)

The most amazing thing happened the first time I ever came to this store.

My friend and I were strolling down Haight Street when we decided to visit this store because it was one of her places to go shopping. I had never gone shopping for secondhand clothes, so my only intent was to help her pick out clothing items that she would want to try on.

As I began to browse the jeans section of the store, it happened; I spotted a pair of Lucky Brand jeans. Not just any pair of Lucky Brand jeans though; they were Sweet Dreams (style of denim, no longer available), and they were short inseam (which are a hard find) for only $25, when my loyal-to-brand heart knew that at regular retail price, they could easily be anywhere between $98-$128. I had to have my friend inspect the jeans herself because it was just to good to be true. And it was :)

I also always wanted to own a knee-length black denim stretch skirt. I found an American Apparel knee-length black denim stretch skirt. I wanted a green and blue plaid button up sleeve shirt, I found that in the store as well. Similar to the saying from Field of Dreams "if you build it, they will come", all I have to do is want it, and I will find it in this store.

But why only the 4 stars? Every time I come here, I get really bad attitude from the employees here.

It's the typical "you're not our target customer" vibe. At this point though, I don't care because I find such great bargains here. It's almost worth it to me to go in here and shop knowing that you are taking away all the good buys away from the people they would rather sell it too (the "Hipsters" as some may put it).

It's like a goodwill with clothes you would actually want to wear. I like the selection at the Haight St. store. I found a lot of great things; even something I would wear a lot for only $8.

Pleasantly surprised by this store. I visited one once in the Sunset and hadn't returned to any Buffalo Exchange because I was a bit off put by their attitude.

Always a hit or miss at this location when it comes to buying and selling. Unless you're psychic, you'll never know what the selection will look like, or what buyer will be working the day you come in but since I've never had a terrible experience here, I think it's worth the risk.

Their merchandise is geared mostly to the hippie & grunge folk of the Haight/Ashbury community so all your monogram designer duds are not welcome here; though I'm assuming if you're coming here to sell, you don't own ed hardy or juicy couture jumpsuits to begin with. This locations does go for contemporary designers, urban outfitters-type and some no name brands that fit the hipster aesthetic. Rarely will they accept the typical forever21 or h&m, unless its "trendy" and in season.

They can be picky when it comes to buying, but every time I look through the racks I think to myself, "who the eff would buy that?" Sorry, but it makes no sense to me why most clothes on the racks (which look like '90s wear) are more "desirable" than my clothes from 2009/10 in which case whoever was working the buyer desk had no idea what he/she was thinking. Despite that, I do like the way they handle donations and I never feel super ripped off. They tell you up front how much your item is worth, unlike Crossroads where everything is sold in silence. Which brings me to my next point: the staff, who are very friendly and do not judge you for once owning old navy corduroys and windbreakers. It can definitely be uncomfortable, though, when a buyer in training is being told that your pieces are "undesirable" and "would never sell" in store - kind of awkward explaining the rules of buying in front of sellers/customers but albeit, great experiences at Buffalo and I always come back.

I brought 2 pairs of brand new Rock 'N Republic jeans to Crossroads and they made me an offer.  Then I took them to Buffalo and Buffalo offered more. Yay!   Buffalo FTW.

Buffalo offers significantly more if you choose a credit for the store instead of cash, but it's a place that requires lots of patience to flip through their racks--it's less organized than crossroads--but when you find hidden treasures, it's worth the time.

This is one of the coolest/ best variety consignment stores I've ever been to. My favorite part about any vintage/consignment/exchange shopping in S.F. is how all the neighborhoods are virtually on top of each-other and everything in the city overlaps. That my friends is the recipe for EXCELLENT consignment shopping. The Buffalo off Haight has everything! Little old, little new, vintage, trendy, urban, classic, they really have everything. You just have to train yourself to find the great steals and deals!

How have I not heard of this place before??  I needed some pants and stopped into a few spots in the upper Haight. Hundreds of dollars per pair at some places. Then I stopped here.

Normally, my sizes are all out - 32 waist, L tees, blah blah... I found a killer blazer for $20, two pants for $15/ea... and the deals go on and on.

Check it out - they have tons of stuff! Definitely a place I'll go often.

The store was disappointing. Some of the tops had stains but were still over ten dollars. The lady said that they were that cheap because they were "as is". It's already used, AND stained, it shouldn't even be on the racks!! A lot of the clothing was really worn even if it was designer. Maybe its hit or miss, id stop by again if I were in the area just to see if there was anything better.

I was five years old, standing in the back of an anxious line waiting for the go ahead from our kindergarten teacher, so we could head to lunch.

All of a sudden, my kindergarden teacher had a "brilliant" idea.

She said that if were to organize ourselves by foot size correctly, we'd get cookies the next day.

Confused, but excited about sugar, we haphazardly figured that all the boys would be in the front, and all of the girls in the back.

After organizing ourselves, we looked at her for approval.

She smiled and brought out a ruler.

"Well why don't we measure each foot to make sure?"

Hungry for lunch, we fumbled with the ruler with our tiny fingers. We measured a couple of feet and repositioned a couple of gangly boy kids in the front.

All of a sudden the girl in front of me, scrunched up her face, dropped to the ground and measured my left foot.  She gasped.

"woah - they're like double mine!"

Everyone turned and the guy from the front, all proud of his big feet, ran over to me and measured my left foot.

    His face paled.

"um -yours are definitely the biggest - I guess you're at the front of the line."

My face turned a bright red, and I took my place at the front of the line.

I could hear whispers behind me " Woah...Big Foot Jessica!!!"

    I sighed heavily.

    Great

As if all those redhead nicknames which parents like to throw around weren't bad enough - now I was Big Foot Jessica.

My feet only grew from there.

As did my trouble with finding shoes that fit well and looked good. I mean Aldo shoes doesn't even carry shoes past a size 10!

So...it was a pleasant surprise when Buffalo Exchange pulled through this weekend. I found two pairs of girly wedges in my size.

Now I'm pretty squeamish about second hand shoes. I don't like thinking about the feet that squeezed into them before me, but sometimes I can rationalize a new-ish pair of heels and summer sandals

But larger sized shoes aside, the rest of Buffalo Exchanges stuff is usually over-priced and often raggedy looking. You have to do some real digging, and usually when you do find something slightly cool, it ends up almost costing the same as a new item of clothing. And so I rarely stop in and prefer Crossroads instead.

So,while Buffalo exchange isn't the best place for clothes in terms of selection and prices ,  they do redeem themselves by carrying a decent selection of  big sized footware and they have a no bag-check policy. You can just waltz in with bags and not worry about waiting in line to check and uncheck them

(oh and just for the record, and for my own self esteem my feet aren't thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat big - 91/2 - 10, I just have long toes, as my mom likes to say....)

Way back when I lived in Russian Hill, I wanted to get rid of some of my fine duds so thought about selling them at Buffalo Exchange. I went in to that location (now closed and moved to Valencia), and their staff was cool and helpful about what they could and could not take (heartbreaking to find out no one wanted one of old corduroy blazers!). You can get cash or credit back, and you get more "dollars" for credit, so I opted for that option.

That was in 2004. Just yesterday, I found that credit and went into their  Haight location. As with any used clothing store, you have to be patient to find something that's all about your style, and even then sometimes the gods of vintage are against you. But yesterday, for me at least, I found just what I was looking for: one Onitsuka Tiger hoodie and one Nice Collective sweatshirt, total about $45, leaving me with $20 in store credit!

The guy at the counter was really cool, think his name was Levi, and even though my credit in theory expired after one year, he checked with his boss and they let it slide. Nice and human customer service, go figure.

So after this circle of clothing life and death and rebirth, the moral for you, dear yelper, is that the Buffalo Exchange is pretty darn special. Now, what do I need with that extra twenty dollars...

Wasteland let me down for costumes... so to Buffalo I went.

I was shocked they had so many costumes, especially new, or once worn.

I ended up getting a cute little number for about 24 bucks when new it probably would have been about 70.

I may really hate their Berkeley store, but I'm pretty happy with this one.

To the idiots giving low ratings because they wouldn't buy your crappy clothes:

This is not the Goodwill store. They will only buy clothes that they think people will actually wear. When you're trying to get rid of clothes, you need to make TWO piles. Pile 1 is stuff that is no longer your style but is still good condition, cute clothes. Helps if you have good name brand clothing that is in season. Pile 2 is weird crap you and no one else would wear. Pile 2 goes to Goodwill, Pile 1 goes to Buffalo.

Don't bring in clothes that are all crappy, when you KNOW they're crappy, and get all pissed when they don't buy your crappy crap.

That being said, this is where I do my main shop. I especially come here for jeans, t-shirts, skirts and jackets. Low prices, and I almost never leave empty-handed. Service here is also friendly and helpful!

The only thing I wish they would do differently is the sizing of their jeans. I can get 10 pairs of jeans that are allegedly the same "size", but some are baggy, some are so small I can't get it up past my knees, maybe 1 or 2 will actually be the advertised size. What's size 4 in one brand is not size 4 in another. They should get out a tape measure and figure out the waists on these, and do the sizes that way. It would certainly save me a lot of time!

    Just alright.
    Yeah... Just alright.

This store is a mess but I have managed to find a nice pair of Diesels and a couple cool sweaters. It just feels like you have to sift through a lot of crap to find something amazing. I brought sexy back for less than $30 here! Try doing that at Neiman's... nawww ain't happenin!

What can I say about Buffalo Exchange? I
1.) Only go here if you are looking for last month's stock at Forever 21.  Seriously, thats pretty much all you will find in terms of women's clothes.  Oh, they're also the same price as Forever 21 but with pit-stains included in the price.
2.) Like smelly shoes from PayLess with holes in the bottom?  Only 25 bucks (no joke).
3.) If I wanted a 20 dollar necklace, I'd get a better one at Urban.  Dipshits.

I also can't stand the people who work here.  They're "indier than thou" but make minimum wage.  Probably the rudest employees on Haight, and they kinda smell funny.  The sperm depository of a manager makes me want to vomit as well.  If you insist on shopping on Haight (which is a bad idea in itself), at least go to Wasteland, their clothes are better.  More pricey, but worth it.

This store is run by smug hipsters. For kicks we went up there to sell some old swag, they made us wait for at least an hour because they're so busy running back to the mirror to be sure their hair is perfectly messed up and their little white belts are perfectly askew. Then they look through your clothes with the sort of disdain best served by nuns.
    Skip it.

Everybody told me that Buffalo Exchange gives you more for your clothes than crossroads.  They took some of my best jeans and quoted them at $10-$14.  -_- Since I took cash, that's only 35%.

After buffalo, I went and stopped by at crossroads down the block.  They took whatever Buffalo didn't want and gave me $20 each.  Next time I'll know where to go first.  I sold much less item at Crossroads and got double the amount there.  I feel like such an idiot.  BLAH!

I love hanging out at Haight and I especially love that there is Buffalo Exchange here. My sister gave me a whole bunch of clothes that she no longer likes so I had a bag full of unwanted clothes. After eating at Little Vietnam Cafe my friend and I went here to sell it.

I knew they weren't going to buy everything nor even half of what I had but its worth the try, plus its fun!  After rummaging through my bag the girl (who was so sweet and who has the cutest smile) only bought 1 thing. Its funny because I knew that was the only thing they would like and I wondered why my sister even bought it- it was a weird looking dress lol Well the girl asked the girl next to her if its a "yes?" and she said "yes.." and said "16" .. so in my head. YES! I get $16!! WHoo HOo!! Uhh.. Duh, Selle.. They will sell it for $16 and you will get $8.

Oh well.. I guess that can go towards my gas money for driving to Haight to sell that weird looking dress.

Note: Do not forget to sign in when you are trying to sell your clothes!! You will want to hit yourself on the head if you don't and instead of being called next you will be the last!!
