I'm starting to become a big fan of the Buff. Why spend boatloads of money at the mall when you can drop $30 and walk out with a pile of clothing? If you're one of those people that gets ooky about shopping second hand - this place will not float your boat. But if you're willing to spend some time behind the racks you will not be disappointed.

I usually stock up on tshirts, tops, and the occasional funky dress here, and regularly obsess over the fancy label stuff in the locked counter (although I always pass those up.)

Note: Check out the jewelry counter for extra marked-down goodness. And if you're into selling,  just ask the staff ahead of time and see what kinds of things they're looking for or you could end up disappointed.

Buffalo Exchange - not just good for Halloween costumes anymore.

I have to side with oh-so-many reviews and agree that some of the staff are "cooler than thou" hipsters and can be snobby. I'm not saying they all are. But I've definitely met some nasty girls in that store...

They sell cute clothes, but I have to admit: they seemingly used to sell much cooler. I like looking for clothes that are kind of outrageous and unique, and I'm disappointed that they never seem to have much of that anymore (i guess it's not in style anymore? idk).

Despite those two things, I still pop in from time to time in hopes to finding a true gem. The prices are cheaper than department stores and the store itself is nice. The dressing rooms are like different colored space-pods, and little things like that brighten my day. Ha

Needed: something classy to wear to meet the governor.

Budget: $25

Found: a black silk Banana Republic sheath, $25 bucks.

And (budget-be-damned!) found a $35 pair of BCBG gold stilleto sandals with rhinestone studding. Um, yes, thank you.

Great concept--annoying hipsters.....
I like some of the finds in here, but bringing in stuff to "EXCHANGE" borders on ridonkulous.....

I totally understand that this place has an image/style to uphold, however, if I have new shoes, that have been unworn and ARE completely in style (fyi, peep-toe, patent leather flats) there is no reason why, you as a business should not take my shoes and resell them for way more than they are worth.

Oh wait, they aren't a gently-used, pair of lime green-pumas from 1983 that the girl working behind the counter with her retro new-wave hair-do, reproduced Ramones t-shirt from Urban Outfitters and I-am-way-cooler than you attitude would ACTUALLY wear HERSELF.
Silly me.....
Therefore, they don't get taken. This is what annoys me...
I mean come on, surely SOMEONE could wear those flats with their  rolled up skinny jeans, studded leather belt and rockabilly button-down shirt???

UGH! so over it....and that means you, too-cool-for-school sales persons at Buffalo Exchange-get over yourselves.....You really aren't that cool.

So, GOODWILL, I give you my unworn, highly  fashionable cast-offs for free WITH PLEASURE!! xoxox

here's the deal, sour pusses!  ask what they are currently buying before bringing in your lame threads!

the one in seattle used to post on a dry erase board what they'd consider buying & what they would not...nice touch.

BE is a clothing pawn shop, minus the loans.

try tolerating people who think their taste is correct all day long - you'll get an attitude too.  they see what sells, resulting in their opinions on what to buy...just defer to them, they're in the trenches.

if your pride is too fragile, stick to buying only.

buff exchange is a cool option.  i've picked up clean brand name stuff for 1/6 of retail price.  what's not to like?

How does a used shirt at Buffalo Exchange cost more than the same shirt new at Sheplers?  And not by a few cents either. Try 40% more for the used red shirt.

If the sales people have more attitude does that make the clothes more expensive?  I took my daughter there to sell some of her clothes, twice we did this. WTF? You sell clothes, used clothes at that.  She is a kid, come on, be decent.  Tell me, please, what have you ever done in life to think that you are that cool.  Want to compare notes?  No, no you don't.

Sometimes this place has cool clothes but usually I never buy anything here. The times that I do find something the prices are near prices for items that were new. Like I said sometimes they got cool stuff but usually....eh. I also went here to see if they wanted any of my grandmothers clothing (we were getting rid of it since she passed away) The items that I felt sure they would want they by passed. Needless to say after they went through everything they found very little they wanted to buy from us and the rest of the clothes got 'donated' ( or they are going to sell them later) Not my first choice really for a thrift store. The best one I knew was the Five and Dime also on 13th. They also had a larger Five and Dime store in Ft. Collins and you could get really cool retro furniture and clothes for decent prices. The Fort Collins store had 60's style sunglasses that Kurt Cobain often wore. Too bad though the Five and Dime is defunct 100% now. In a nut shell I think the staff tries to make Buffalo Exchange cooler than it really is I.E. They try too hard. Try on Broadway, you will probably find better thrift stores.

I'm going to throw my two cents into the "ambivalent" pile.

On the one hand, I've found some great deals at BE. Cute stuff, generally well priced and I can feel good about myself for being a green consumer. It takes a while to browse and sift through all of the crap, but when you find that piece that is fun and cheap and different, yay. Worth the effort.

However, every time I go into the store, I leave feeling all kinds of annoyed. Maybe it's the staff. There's the whole cooler-than-thou vibe that makes me want to shake them in their skinny jeans. And as others have mentioned, it completely translates into their buying process. I wonder if they have secret training rituals in the art of arbitrary selection and making people feel like styleless insects. I am always amazed at the selection of plain t-shirts from Old Navy on the racks when they've just rejected 90% of my perfectly reasonable submissions. What's the deal? Very frustrating indeed.

I'm so glad others feel about this store the way I feel about it: overrated (though not on the Yelp site ;)...).

I have attempted twice to sell clothes here, and both times had maybe three shirts or one pair of vinyl pants among THE CHOSEN ONES and I get $4.35 in cash or $7.60 in store credit.  Which means I can get half a shirt from Buffalo Exchange or a coffee and a donut some other place.  Sigh.

Also, the whole hipster thing--get over yourselves.  I gave up the life of trying to be too cool for school... oh yeah, back in high school.  I haven't been here in a while because every time I have gone in, I am made to feel like I don't "belong" (kind of like high school), plus why spend $15 on t-shirt when I can go find something similar for about $3 at Goodwill?

The irony is that they're a chain. Sure, each store may have their own stock of merchandise, but the mythical-unicorn-process-of-actually-getting-your- clothes-bought-from-you and the snot-nosed-scene-kid-attitude are probably present at every location.

Where'd it all go so very wrong for Buffalo Exchange?

BE totally used to be my go-to place for clothes.  When I had a few extra bucks to spend, I would head over there and stock up on some cool stuff for reasonable prices.  I liked its old location over on 15th better, but I still continued to go after they moved to 13th.

In years past, I've gotten some of the cutest skirts and shirts I own at BE.  A couple of times I even stopped in a few hours before going on a date or out on the town and could find something.

Those days are long gone.  The last few times I've been in, I found maybe one thing worth buying after sifting through racks and racks of crap.

Yes, the buyers seem to make completely random and non-sensical choices.  I have taken things in that were super cool and unusual and have been turned away.  The last time I tried to sell anything there was when I had a pair of really different high heeled black boots that I only wore once(killed my feet and were too tall for someone who's already 5'10"), and was told that they were too worn out.  Zuh?  I have also brought utter crap in and had it snapped up.  Who knows what the hell is going on anymore over there.

I had a conversation about BE with a few friends recently, and they've all had similar expereriences.

I still go over there every once in a while in the hopes of finding cool shit, but those trips have become few and far between since I realized I can find basically the same stuff at Target or Old Navy.

I've been to many Buffalo Exchange's around the county and still LOVE this location.

I mostly sell clothes here but I love the staff (who I admit can be a little "too cool for school") but does recognize regular customers. I love the mixture of various clothing options, decent jeans for men and the support of local designers.

I'm on the fence about Buff Ex.
Sometimes I find really great stuff that is priced correctly, other times I find expensive sequined suits that would be cool if you were a member of Van Halen in the 80s.
Another thing I can't stand: the staff can be super snooty when you take in clothes.  I took in designer jeans and tops, and a few pieces of "why did I buy this?" from forever 21...guess what they took??  I made money, so I can't really complain.  But, come on...no one is that hip.  Well, maybe David Lee Roth.

Found a pair of true religions for 20 and a pair of mavis for 18.  Both are way cute, though I washed them before wearing (always a good idea!)
However, they will never buy any of my shit!
And I have brought in some way cool things!
Way cooler than the rib length I love colfax shirt that has been hanging there since 1985.
But yeah, the deals are too awesome for me to hate on anything too much.
And I love the way everyone dresses that works there.  I wish I could pull things off like they do!

I first found out about this place through a friend and headed up to check it out.

The Good: Well so far I've managed to find some good items that I really liked and for cheap, so I can't complain.  I still have to go back for a pair of black cowboy boots though. Sectioned off well so I can skim through the small medium and large.  I never used the dressing room so I can't complain about that area.  I've met friendly staffers and there used to be this one adorable red head with short hair there but anyways all is well.

The Okay: The clothes selection isn't that bad and I've managed to score some good stuff.

The WTF?: Okay so this is a second hand store right?  Because when I first went through the rack, I spotted a sweet looking shirt with bird silhouettes going across it.  Well when I peeped at the price I had a WTF moment.  $30??????

Overall:  It gets four out of five because it's better than where I used to shop at (Plato's Closet)  and I've never had to deal with the staff when it comes to taking clothes in to sell.

Sometimes I do feel like it's a literal Buffalo Exchange. Since most everything of decent wear is for overweight heffers.

Would be nice if they had a better selection/collection for the petites that didn't make me look like some hooker on Colfax. I've found better deals at Target.

I give Buffalo Exchange 4 stars for the simple fact that every time I have really needed them to help me buy the perfect gift or add an accessory to create the perfect outfit they have been there for me.

I have bought countless shirts (for both boys and girls), sunglasses, skirts, even a kickball dress from this "thrift" store. I give it quotations because I think in a true thrift store you can find an awesome item for under $5. That is most definitely not the case here. Still, you often get what you pay for, blah, blah, blah.

Plus, the people that work here are usually friendly and they f&$*ing kill it on the iPod with their tunes.

Wow. It seems like we have some insecure Yelpers around here. Buffalo Exchange is probably like every other store in that it buys as much as it can sell: meaning that even if you have the cutest little black dress on Earth to sell them, and they have a full rack of little black dresses in the store already, they can't buy yours.
And sure, the pricing is much higher than a thrift store- I go there precisely because I don't have time to pick through mountains of used clothing to find something wearable. I expect to pay more, but my time is worth it.
And the staff there has always been very helpful to me. I can imagine they could look imposing to some people because of their style but they're actually very nice, especially this blond girl with a nose ring and the cutest hair ever. She helped me find a long sleeved shirt for my boyfriend and it looks awesome on him.
Just open your mind next time you go in, you may have a better experience.

From my poor college days of frequenting thrift shops, I thought those days are over after I found a job.  Nope, still poor.

I really like their selection of hip clothes, although their price tags are on the high end for used stuff.  I bought a Banana Republic shirt for $15 and an Express dress for $15; both of which can be bought for similar prices off a (brand new) sale rack.  Those items looked new, so I'm just going to convince myself that they are.  Hopefully, I won't contract some weird skin disease for being in denial.  For clothes that are trendy but are not name brands, they are also in the $10-$15 range; I would just go to Aeropostale or Forever 21 then.

I recently cleaned out my closet and went there to sell some stuff.  They did not reimburse me as much as I would have liked ($2.50 for most items), but I guess that's how their business works.  I no longer wanted the stuff anyway, so it was better than getting nothing for it.

I must comment on their dressing room capsules; they are super-duber-uber cool.  I have problems with dressing rooms with small doors in the event that some creepy tall dude walks by and sees everything.  These dressing room capsules are very tall, so even if I contract leprosy, I can still have privacy.

1 star off: pricey for used stuff

I am so happy to be moving back to a place where they have a Buffalo!  The staff is a bit too hipster for my taste but I love this store nonetheless.  I mean, when shopping for clothing, customer service isn't my first priority.  Prices really can vary from great and super cheap to "are you f-ing kidding me?" but you can always find a good deal here if you are willing to look.  If you have the time, come here and you can find a great unique outfit for half of what you would pay in a department store.  Happy Hunting!

I am addicted to this place. I got:

-A Cadillac shirt for $6
-A shirt with a picture of a guy about to fight a bear with a hatchet
-Organic cotton jeans for $115 off the tag price ($50, on consignment)
-Used Nike shoes with orange swooshes
-A shirt that says 'boys don't cry'
-A plaid Levi's 'action shirt' (the plaid your dad wore, not the kind they sell at A&F, or A&E, or A&D) that's so thin you can see through it and I think has been re-stitched. AKA, my favorite shirt.
-Some jeans that make me look like I have a coke habit

Yes, yes, the Buffalo Exchange is amazing. Plus, the last time I went there, they were playing the Ill Communication CD, some J5, and RJD2 before he thought he had grown a third hand. What are you RJD2, some sort of terminator?

I don't understand why I have come here so many times. Seems like I always leave frustrated. I think it is cluttered! I always see the same tops and jeans... which i call crap.... I mean seriously if its not selling move it or sell it for a dollar...
I found a funny weezer shirt I loved but it was 30 bucks!! T SHIRT ha ha ha I doubt this shirt new was 30 bucks... I have found cute jeans and a killer pair of heels but not really anything else.
The things I brought in were also rejected... but whatever... you don't need my nice jeans anyway... ill give em to my sister
I found an awesome shirt there once(it was not 30 bucks either!!)... and when I got it home to wear out... it had a hole in the armpit!! I think its funny they wont take some thing I have brought in with tags on them but they sold me a holey shirt!!
I dunno... I would rather go to arc if I was going to have to sift through things that I would never put out on a hanger.

I want to like Buffalo Exchange. I really do. In theory, the place is everything I'd want in a thrift store. In reality, it just doesn't live up to its potential.

I just went there again yesterday and was very close to buying a cute little shirt for $8 when I did a double take in the mirror. Was that a stain on the side? Yes, yes it was. And it was definitely noticeable.

Had this been the only time I'd seen a stain here, I wouldn't think much of it, but it seems this has become the norm for my visits. I find something I like and right before I'm about to take it off and bring it up to the counter - I realize a stain. Or a tear/hole.

Aside from this, I really haven't been all that impressed with the selection any time I've visited. Even though I get disappointed each time I visit, I keep going back hoping the next time will be better. I guess that's my mistake.

I'm sure I'll stop by again here and there and hopefully those next visits will allow me to edit my rating, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Everytime I clean out my closet, I head over to Buffalo Exchange to see how much I can cash in.  It's usually around $50, not bad for stuff that's just taking up space.  However, the buyers  are entirely too hip for there own good.  Calm down already! What are the qualifications for being a "Buffalo Exchange buyer"?  Oh, wait... there aren't any.  I have never bought a single item from there.  I would much rather go to Forever 21 or Target and get a dope tee minus the B.O. and pit stains.  GROSSS!!!

In the past, thrift stores have been where I find costumes for themed parties.  You know, bright pink spandex for the 80s party and beyond.  So when my friends dragged me I thought I was going to hate it.

I didn't hate it.  I found a pair of capris for work, and I found a cute tee-shirt that still had the original store tag on it - BE sold it for $9 and the original price was $25.  I was surprised by the selection of cute purses as well.

The only thing you MUST have when going here is patience.  Don't come in a rush, you'll just get frustrated and probably leave empty handed. I'll be back, soon to sell them some of my clothes... we'll see how that goes.

P.S. drive past BE on 13th and turn an immediate left into the alley.  There's a parking lot out back which is purposely decorated with pretty graffiti.

It is hard to call this a thrift store anymore, since the prices and garbs aren't that thrifty.  The shop is usually crowded and you can guarantee yourself that the good finds were swapped up right away by the employees themselves when someone traded it in.

To me, the best part of thrift store shopping is finding that incredible item smashed in between those two horrible items.  Nobody else is in the store and you have nobody to show but the lady behind the register.  Those are the best thrift store.

BE is a good place to try to make some quick cash with your old clothes, but they also slightly make you feel like you should instead keep it... Like maybe they know something that you don't... Regardless, this place is a saint when the months get closer to the holidays or my hair appointments.

My boyfriend got a cool pair of shoes here about a year ago and I still dig them, so if he can shop in there, by golly, so can you!

* Star one is for taking something old and making it new again
** Local star two is for being located in a nice urban and easy to find location
***Give me all your money star three is for buying your old or unwanted clothing (Makes me feel like a dealer)
**** Smashing darling star four is for making a chain out of a thrift store, now that's pretty talented

While it's not the cheapest thrift store around, the selection is expansive and impressive - Project E, Lux, Free People, Weston Wear, Ella Moss, and Cynthia Rowley - those are the ones I liked!  The clothes are well-organized - by item and size, and the place doesn't smell terribly "thrifty".

The dressing "capsules" are fun and make you feel like you're stepping in a giant barrel.  It's the little things that make me smile.

There's also a huge selection of buttons/pins, lots of shoes, and accessories.  As well as more costume-y clothing.

I enjoyed my shopping trip whilst in Denver and will hopefully be back sooner than later!

I remember coming here in high school and thinking I had stumbled across the most amazing store in the entire world.

Thankfully people get older and their taste in fashion matures (hopefully). Sometimes you can find true gems, but this is one of those hit-or-miss situations that typically ends up being a "miss".

Also, in recent years I've found that the employees have become more and more rude. My last experience in the store was so terrible I made it a point not to set foot in there for several months. Some gentleman at the counter was downright rude from the time I asked him to get me a fitting room (in the middle of the afternoon, they were nowhere near closing time) until after I had purchased my items & left. I think the final straw was his behavior when it came to items I was trying to sell them.

I remember being told "you get what you pay for", but that is definitely not the case where customer service is concerned at this location.

Many moons ago I went to the Buffalo Exchange and traded in my biker jacket for some shiny new raver pants. They were bright, bright, bright orange and flared out below the knee like freakin' parachutes. And yes, they rode lower than Bush's approval ratings.

Pretty picture? At the time the pants were smashing. Now, I'd like my biker jacket back! Here's the good news: I can always meet my changing fashion needs at the Buffalo Exchange, whatever trend I'm currently chasing. Biker jackets? You bet. Ironic hipster T-shirts? Oh yes. Skinny pants? Puh-leez.

And in 10 years, when those bright orange raver pants come back in style, I'll know just where to find them.

Damn you Buffalo Exchange! I shake my fist at your ability to keep giving me nothing but $12 shitty dollars in trade for every nine bags of clothes I bring in!

But I keep coming back. Shame on me. The trade is often very skewed and weird - either they dont take anything or they take some things and give you back more of the same because they are "full in that area." Word to the wise - dont let them take your stuff to donate it if they dont sell it because you know they put it up for sale right after you walk out the door.

I will say this: You can get really cool sunglasses for eight bucks, the staff is pretty nice, and my friend Erin found a pin once that was a 3D old lady head, bonnet and all.

Both the men's and women's sides have great finds. A lot of their merchandise is overpriced for what you're getting, but you can find a good deal on some designer items.

The staff is happy to help. I also love the way that the staff dresses. They embody the whole vintage feel.  They might seem a bit judgmental, but I doubt they care if you're not wearing vintage.

However, as for consiging, I do not believe that they offer good deals. Additionally, they do not take as much clothing as they should, and some items in the store should not be in there.  Way too many items from Gap and Old Navy and Forever 21 (just to name a few).  If you're gonna resale cheap items like this, then mark the prices down.

Nevertheless, whimsical choice of shoes, shirts, sweaters, coats, belt buckles, etc. A Must-see!

The most expensive "thrift store" in America.  Now while I have been able to come out with some pretty damn slick t-shirts and sweaters I feel that at least 95% of the clothes in Buff Exchange makes folks come off like  pretentious scenesters that are naive with desires to be "in."  But if that is what your aim is...by all means, bring a fat wallet and stock up here.

I still have to say I really love the long sleeve Blondie t-shirt I got in the San Francisco Buffalo Exchange and would be sad to part ways with it...even if it is a bit too long.

Beware--hipsters rule here. When I entered the store, I thought I was going to have a good experience. The girl who greeted me was very pleasant, and there seemed to be racks of endless men's clothes. The experience should go well from here, right? Wrong. In retrospect, here are my complaints:

1) Mostly overpriced for the types of labels they are offering. $55 for jeans? Give me a break. Not to mention the fact that several items had blemishes. I've found better clothes in better condition for cheaper at Goodwill.
2) Also, way too snobby in selecting which of my trade-in items to accept, considering what they had on the racks. They apparently care whether that pair of pants has cool retro stripes, notwithstanding the frayed cuffs and belt loops. I had four *pristine* high-quality, modern pants turned down. I probably would have gone somewhere else if it weren't for the fact that no other store in Denver, except Snob Shop (super high-end consignment) and Dress for Less Clothiers (50-something golfer Sunday wear), does men's consignment.
3) Several items were mis-sized (trust me, I tried on a bunch). Ladies clothes were also mixed in with men's.
4) Checkout process was sloooow. They were too busy having a conversation about whether the last trade-in was worth keeping (you can do that afterward). I thought the woman behind was going to have a cow, she was waiting so long.
5) I kid you not, there were boogers on some clothes on the rack. Nasty. I wonder if they wash or even Febreeze those bitches.

If it weren't for that first girl I met (bless you, you red-headed goddess), I'm not sure I'd go back. I did end up finding one shirt I liked there, so I guess that's the other silver lining.

Great store for costumes and cool accessories. If you are looking for something very unique for a specific outfit (ie a cape, or goggles, vinyl platform boots or a specific t-shirt) this is a great place to find that item.

As far as the thrift store concept - I have little luck with this place.

Thumbs up on the costumes - thumbs down for "good" thrift.

I can see from some of these other reviews that the employees at the Buffalo Exchange have also rubbed some customers the wrong way.  I will give them credit where credit is due- they usually play great music in this store.  It's the only place in Denver where I've heard Beirut.  But I still have a kind of love-hate relationship with this place.  I don't get offended when they don't buy my clothes.  Most of the articles are indeed ugly and/or weird, which I why I'm getting rid of them in the first place.  However, I had a major issue with this place one time, and this has kind of scarred me in my relations with this store.  The buyer didn't select any of the clothes so I took them to Goodwill because I refuse to "donate" clothes to a clothing exchange.  I went back to Buffalo Exchange a week or so later and found one of the sweaters that I had donated to Goodwill hanging on a sale rack with a $30 price tag.  I was pretty certain it was my old sweater because there can't be too many people getting rid of hot pink crocheted DKNY sweaters all in the same two-week period.  That made me really angry.  I didn't care so much they wouldn't give me the money for the sweater, but it really pissed me off that their employees shop through cheaper thrift stores where people donate their items for free to find stuff to sell at an inflated price.  That kind of activity makes it seem like they are extorting the non-profit organizations like Salvation Army and Goodwill for their own profit.  I assume they make quite a bit of money offering people about 1/10 of what their designer clothes are worth, and I think it's unnecessary to rip off other stores (and the people who donate to them) by buying things for $2 and selling them for $30.

Sorry BE, but I have to tell people how our relationship went sour. Two  years ago you were everything to me, sunglasses, shoes, shirts, skirts, jeans, and my one stop shop down the street where, when my closet pissed me off, I would run into your arms and I would find the perfect shirt for happy hour.
I don't know when you went to the other side, but you're not the same. When I moved back downtown four months ago, I was so excited that we were getting back together. But to be honest, you went from my little indie clothing dive and morphed into this local fashion snob. Seriously, the point of the Buffalo Exchange is to be a more selective version of the Goodwill. You're not out there to represent every over priced local designer in the Denver metro area or to make us look like Brittney Spears. I used to be able to visit you and pick up an entire outfit for less than $20. Now I'm lucky if I can get a tee shirt for under $14.50.
It's like you used to be this great little escape for those of us who would prefer not to shop at Target when that was all our meager salaries allowed, and now you found a new, cooler, group of friends who you go do drugs with and you've left us in the dust.
I can't completely quit you, dearest BE, but I'm not coming around as much because a) I can't afford you, and b) we've grown apart when it comes to fashion sense. I don't want to walk around town in a blingy, low cut "Gold Digger" t-shirt. If that's what you want, then I'm not your girl and we should just accept that you've changed. The Buffalo Exchange needs to go to rehab.

on occasion, you can find a TRUE bargain here.

pros:  the selection of pins/badges in the bowl by the counter, the fact that they carry/support local designers, and the used shoe section usually has a few amazing finds.

cons: it smells like feet in there, over-priced t-shirts in sizes too small or too large for the average person, and the flyers don't get sorted out often enough so there are flyers for events that have long since passed.
