Review from Danny W.
Ok after this past Halloween I've come to the conclusion that BBreath is definitely one of the best places in town to get a costume. The staff is really helpful, and even with a complete zoo of people inside they were able to get me in and out with great customer service.
It doesn't really come cheap, but you'll certainly increase your Halloween experience by utilizing this shop.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Very UNSATISFIED customer!
1 Star for very bad customer service.
It was made clear that you cannot return a costume after you buy it. That's a no brainer - of course you don't want costumes being returned after they have been worn on Halloween, BUT any good business should know that satisfying your customers (especially those who have spent ALOT of money at your store for many years) is extremely important!
I spent $199 dollars on what I thought was an awesome costume. Yes, I tried it on before I bought it, but when I got home and tried it on again I realized I had bought a size too big - it didn't look as good as a $199 costume should look.
All I asked was to exchange it for THE SAME COSTUME - very distinct from RETURNING a costume. Buffalo Breath would not have lost out on this transaction!! It was 2 weeks before Halloween - They would have a costume to sell to someone else, as well as a very satisfied, happy (and spooky) customer. Win/Win.
I agree that businesses need their employees and customers to follow certain rules in order to be successful, but when rules are enforced merely for the sake of being enforced, is when you lose my business. -

heck ya! ok, not 4 stars for the rentals since most only seemed ok.
the customer service was awesome! i decided to re-run a "costume" from one of yelp's parties - prohibition style, i was able to pick up some costume enhancers to make my look even cooler.
already had:
1. 3 piece pinstriped suit
2. fedora
3. watch chain
bought here:
- matching blond (real human hair) yeah, sounds gross but it looked better than the fake hair
- fake blood
- fake human skin to create bullet holes
- spirit gum remover so i won't have to scrape all the crap off me
- machine gun that takes 4 aa batteries.
service was patient and quite helpful. i tried on about 8 different moustaches.
got a ticket to a fun party downtown and can't wait to whooop it up!
it's the first time i won't have to go as an angel (my usual fall back costume)
pics to come! -

Love it! They have anything and everything, just couldn't give them five stars because some of there prices are just way to much.
I love that you can also rent costumes from them and they are open year round as well.
If you don't want to order your costume defiantly check out Buffalo Breaths, the staff is really friendly too. -

Usually we check out the costumes once a year..
I love the large selection of costumes they have..
I found a costume I really loved but it was a little pricey 59.99..So we
decided to go to Spirit Halloween and found the costume for 39.99 huge savings!! -

Simply the best place in town to rally up a great looking costume.
They rent them out for at a fair enough price, considering the completeness of the costume you can pick up. Their rental outfits were clean and maintained in good enough condition that we felt good about having them on.
I've also been in at off times of year not only for Halloween. We've picked up pirate get ups here and also been in to find circus outfits for my daughter & her Daddy (for a Daughter & Daddy party), not to mention Hannah Montana, Princesses...I could go on and on. You get the gist.
Is Buffalo Breath perfection in the land of costume stores? No. I lived in L.A. for years. L.A. (as we all know) is movie-ville. But San Diego is not Los Angeles. For San Diego, Buffalo Breath offers the most comprehensive assortment of costumes (in great condition, for all occasions and in all sizes) that you will find.
I've never had trouble finding help in this store. That's more than I can say for the other costume shops we've hit in San Diego over the years. Plus, they aren't one of those fly by night "Halloween Stores" that pop up for a couple of months ever autumn and then disappear. Buffalo Breath offers slightly better prices than those stores, better selection, better service, better parking and better staff.
As for their free party. That's not a small thing in the area of town it's in. -

What a great place! We were greeted and helped every step of the way. We opted to rent for a party and not only do they help you try everything on and add accessories to your heart's content, but when you are done it is bagged and will be ready for pickup when needed. If you opt to buy, you can get lost looking through the racks of costumes, from scifi to gladiators and anything and everything in between and every accessory possible!

Wow! So many crazy costumes and so little time....
We went here today to get the spousal unit a flashy, tacky or loud (or all of the above) ensemble for a NYE gig. He wanted to stand out and look performance worthy.
There are wigs as far as the eye can see, crazy costumes for every season and even faux facial hair are all available at this large warehouse full of stuff. It was nice that they had the costumes by category and a lovely variety of vampire teeth if that is your thing.
In the end he found an iridescent silver and black shirt that is so loud that I am sure the neighbors will complain unless we close the closet door.
Mission accomplished. -

1 star off for not enough robot costumes or paraphernalia.
All the extra stars are for:
1. Staff to help you in each section, ie rentals, makeup, check out etc.
2. Lots of parking!
3. Hundreds of rental costumes!
4. Late extended hours this week until 9pm!
5. This is probably the best store here for Halloween, if there is one better I need to know about it so please send info!
6. I got individual attention when I bought my liquid latex on how to use it, what to do, what not to do, and it was very inexpensive, with the spirit gum and all the other stuff I got, made out for about $50, with tights, feet, hands, green face paint etc.
7. Yes they do take credit we are talking about professionals here! -

This place is cool, but very expensive. I've been a couple of times and bought a couple of things, but I could never afford the super-cool costumes. Maybe a buisness or super-rich person could handle it, but not me...
Anywho, they have cool wigs and good make-up selections. go when you have a lot of time so you can check out all the junk. -

My wife and I went in for a fourth of July costume for her. Staff was very friendly and helpful and hooked her up with a Betsy Ross outfit that is a rental. Will definitely go back for any costume needs. Thanks again Buffalo Breath for the personalized service and friendly atmosphere of your store.
Will definitely go back. -

If you're looking for any kind of costume, chances are, Buffalo Breath has your back. Spongebob Squarepants? Check. Clifford the Big Red Dog? Yup. Assorted Star Wars AND Star Trek characters? You betcha!
I rolled through Comic Con dressed as the lovable wookie, Chewbacca, on Saturday. I was sporting an "I heart Yelp" tank top over the top of the costume. Lemme tell you, that was the HOTTEST 4 hours of my life! I sweat all the way through the costume AND the tank top. It was a little embarrassing, actually.
That costume wasn't cheap to rent, however...and it looked like the wookie fur attached to the legs was applied by a 4 year-old with some Elmers paste. A lot of the fur fell right off within 5 minutes of walking around it in. The head was spot on, but the rest of the outfit was a little janky, truthfully. Oh well, it did the trick.Listed in: Thank you, Buffalo Exchange

The Elite Uno de May Mustachio Bashio was quickly coming upon us. I had just flown in from a long weekend in Colorado (and boy were my arms tired) and knew that I had to go to get my stache and wig to finish off my Beastie Boys SABOTAGE costume idea.
Previously, I had worked down the street from here and often passed by it. The building looked huge and I presumed that they did fairly well, cause they have been there for a while. Walking in, I realized why they have stuck around. The staff was very helpful, she pointed us in the right direction, helped us with mustache selection and adhesive choices. I never realized the intricacy involved in putting on a fake 'stache. Our sales girl was not trying to do what most places do (especially around Halloween) and rake you over the coals on prices. One lovely fu manchu mustache $9.
Since I was born with a blond hair and virtually no means to grow a proper mustache, I was resigned to purchasing a nice mustache for the evening as well as a 70's style black wig. Originally I thought I would need a "jew fro" as it was so delicately put by Seth Rogen in Knocked Up. However, our very helpful sales girl pointed out the "Elvis" wig, which was just perfect. I didn't need to do much to it, it was the perfect fit!
Needless to say, I was now fully prepared and ready to adorn my Nathan Wind as Cochese outfit for the mustache bash thanks to Buffalo Breath Costumes!
They do have a pretty good sized selection of professional costumes that you can rent out. I will definitely be getting a big brown squirrel costume from here for the next Furries party I attend! -

I ventured to Buffalo Breath in the early stages of creating a stache for the most recent Elite event @ La Puerta. After hearing such great things of this place, I figured I could simply buy one that was already badass.
The selection of staches was actually quite small, and I was extremely disappointed. I ended up just buying a small jar of Spirit Gum instead, and was left to fend for myself, and the party only two days away.
After completely the prize winning stache, I ended up not even using the face glue because I didn't think it would hold.
The one thing they do have though, is an amazing selection of masquerade masks toward the front. If I ever need one, I will know where to turn. -

Came here on recommendation of a friend in order to build a costume. Bought a long (human hair!) mustache and beard kit.
Large selection, especially for wigs and makeup. very friendly and helpful staff. They also rent quite a few costumes (like other reviewers, I'm not sure I'm into the concept though, and it's expensive-- much cheaper to buy something at a thrift store).
Cons:
- Kinda pricey
- Kinda out of the wayListed in: Halloween is Right around the…

I came here to get a very last minute costume and the staff was so nice and helpful! I came here with 30 minutes to find a costume & the staff ended up pulling costumes for me while I tried them on. They helped me pick out the perfect costume along with the accessories. The price was pretty decent so I will definitely come back here if I am in dire need of a costume!

There's not a lot of decent costume shops in San Diego that just "HAVE IT ALL". I mean there are plenty of 5 and Dime stores that you can get some kitchy clothes at. But what if you want to dress up as Santa? Or Chewbacca? Or a Roman Gladiator? And what about that Cowardly Lion costume you need for that lame ass Wizard of Oz party you have to go to? Yeah where are you going to find that stuff?
So back in December the Yelper himself Ruggy dials me up and says, hey man I need someone to dress up as Santa for a Yelp Elite party and I know that you have done it before. I was hesitant because I have put even more weight on lately and feeling like shit about myself and did not want to be seen NOT fitting into a Santa costume. Can you imagine the embarrassment? No worries says Rug. I will take care of it. He calls ahead to BB Costumes and sure enough when we arrived, they had a costume that would have fit had I tacked on 30 more pounds! It was awesome. They really took care of me and made me feel comfortable in that costume. I went on to the Yelp Elite San Diego Christmas Party and rocked it for all my new http://Yelp.com friends and even regained a lot of my self esteem to start losing some weight again. Thanks Yelp, Ruggy and the nice folks at Buffalo's Breath! -

I'm a pretty creative Gal and able to whip up a costume myself with little $. But when my friend was having a 40th Birthday Party for her husband and the theme was Casino Night, I just didn't have the time nor energy to come up with something fabulous.
Buffalo Breath was close to my office and I found some okay reviews on Yelp and I was desperate.
I walked in and asked the front desk person for help...she just kind of had this blank look on her face and just kind of grunted something to me. She was completely useless and rude. I asked another woman, her name is Melina and she totally gave me the run down of the place.
They have a rental section where you can rent some very elaborate costumes. They have binders full of their collections. But the prices seemed very steep plus not included in the price were the cleaning fees. Yikes
BB also had another section with all new merchandise that can be purchased...once again I thought the prices were very high but you get to keep the costume.
The totally cool Melina that helped me out with the layout of the place chose costumes for me and talked me out of the rental costumes. She made great suggestions for both me and my friends. My friend found a killer Elvis costume for $20 bucks on the Sale rack!
I walked out of the there $125 lighter...oh well I can wear it for Halloween this year. -

This place is great year round!
I think Buffalo Breath is often forgotten outside of the month of October, but when I need some costume accessories for an 80's themed party, this was the best place to go. Large selection of wigs, hats, and accessories, to compliment and complete my costume. Pricing was fair and customer service was excellent.
+ 100's of unique costumes
+ Rent or Purchase depending on your budget.
+ Largest Feather Boa collection I've ever seen!
- Often too many costumes to really pick 1 -

All I have to say is that this place is awesome. There are costumes and accessories everywhere. I have yet to try the rent/buy option they offer but hear from friends that they have great service.
I am a big fan of shopping in the clearance section. It is not available year round because of space limitations, but boy are the deals amazing.
I purchased a long blonde wig of good quality for $5. !!!!
If you need some random things to dress up to a themed party but are on a very tight budget, then this is the place for you. -

Needed an emergency costume for a last minute party tonite. This place is huge - Rentals, lots of used costumes, lots of accessories and lots of great friendly service. Got me an afro and some 70s digs. Better than party city or Spirit. Check em out!

I was told to come to this place by my dad to pick out my outfit for his theme wedding. I must say the place is HUGE and has a massive selection of costumes for one to pick out. The service could have been a little better and more polite but I'll give them a break, for some reason in Sept. they were pretty dang busy. I tried on my costume and all the accessories with it and when you are done doing that they make you drop everything into a bag and that's what you get. If you miss an item it's because you forgot to toss it in the bag! I can not however comment on the price because my dad paid for it, but maybe for Halloween I'll check the place out!

If you go here I will never speak to you again. I am afraid your lack of taste, intellect, and overall style will infect me and bring me down to your level. Its quite simple folks, they offer average costumes at a way-the-hell-above-average price. I saw an Abraham Lincoln costume for like $90. I know this because I was in the market for an Abraham Lincoln costume-maybe ill upload a pict at a later date. Their Abe costume consisted of a top hat, a crappy beard, and some little rag of a jacket. Im giving them the extra star because they do have alot of costumes and they are located approx 3 blocks from my house. I guess I am just upset because a costume warehouse has the potential to be a wonderland, where you can be whatever and whoever you want. This place just preys on my willy wonka-esque dream and charges me $200 to live it...

Their costumes are sooo over priced that they must be price gouging. I bought a Holloween costume from them and spend $100 on it. I found the same EXACT costume at another shop for $50. Buyer beware!

Overpriced and bad customer service. They tell you they have something over the phone and then when you get there they don't have it. Waste of time! Plus the people they hire to work there don't seem to know anything about the merchandise they sell. There will literally be like 10 ppl standing around you but only one can help you because the others know nothing.
